Volvo Trucks is one of the pioneers in the electric truck segment and has recently unveiled plans to introduce a high-range FH Electric truck. This latest model is to be rolled out in the second half of 2025, and it will have a range of up to 600 km (373 miles) – serving the needs of users with longer commutes.

The new FH Electric truck shall have enough battery capacity to be fit for long hauls and improvements made on the software which runs the entire vehicle. Volvo Trucks will incorporate a new and unique kind of electronic axle technology which combines the motor, gearbox to the axle hence improving the battery efficiency and performance.

In the past year, Jan Hjelmgren, Volvo Trucks’ head of product management and quality, reiterated the company’s focus on green technology. “We are ramping up the spending on green technologies but policymakers have a very significant part to play in helping the shift toward zero-emissions vehicles,” Hjelmgren said to Reuters.

The long range FH Electric is now ready to conquer the market while in the EU, demand for heavy trucks has started to wane after three consecutive years of growth. Delivery was at its best in the past one year as opposed to the previous 15 years because of the unlocking of supply chain constrains. However, the market has taken a downturn, worsened by unpredictable green policies and the lack of political incentives that have not allowed battery-electric vehicles to prosper.

Even today, electric trucks remain expensive as compared to diesel trucks though the costs have come down gradually. Currently, electric trucks ranged from 250,000 euros to 400,000 euros, which illustrates that it is still costly to make zero-emission mobility affordable.

On this note, Volvo Trucks has recently chosen Monterrey in Mexico as its new USD 700 million North American truck plant with production to start in 2026. This action underlines Volvo’s on-going strategy to pursue growth in new markets and to diversify its environmentally-friendly technology programmes.
