Stellantis announces global production plans for next-gen Jeep Compass

Stellantis

Automotive manufacturer Stellantis announced Monday its plans to commence production of the next-generation Jeep Compass at its Melfi facility in southern Italy by 2025. This strategic decision comes as part of the company's broader initiative to address declining output in its Italian operations while advancing its multi-powertrain vehicle strategy.

The new iteration of the popular midsize SUV will be constructed on Stellantis' innovative Medium platform, engineered to accommodate various propulsion systems. This versatile approach will enable the company to offer the vehicle in multiple configurations, including fully electric, hybrid, and traditional internal combustion engine versions. The flexibility in powertrain options is part of Stellantis' strategy to ensure the vehicle remains accessible to a broad spectrum of consumers while aligning with evolving market demands and environmental regulations.

The timing of this announcement is particularly significant given the recent challenges faced by Stellantis in its Italian operations. According to data from the FIM-CISL union, the company has experienced a substantial decline in production volume, with output at Italian plants falling by more than 30% in the first three quarters of the year. The Melfi facility, in particular, has been severely impacted, recording a staggering 62% reduction in production during the same period. Industry analysts project that Stellantis' full-year production in Italy for 2024 will likely fall below 500,000 vehicles, a significant decrease from the 751,000 units produced in the previous year.

To further bolster its production plans at the Melfi plant, Stellantis has also revealed its intention to introduce a new model under its premium DS brand at the beginning of 2025. This announcement is part of a broader strategy that includes the scheduled production of additional mid-sized vehicles at the facility in subsequent years, demonstrating the company's commitment to diversifying its product lineup and maximising plant utilisation.

In a move that underscores the global significance of the new Jeep Compass, Stellantis has outlined plans to expand production beyond Italy. Starting in 2026, manufacturing of the vehicle will extend to North America and other key markets, reflecting the company's ambition to strengthen its global presence and meet diverse regional demands.

The decision to revamp the Jeep Compass, one of Stellantis' best-selling models, represents a crucial step in the company's efforts to navigate the challenging automotive landscape. By offering multiple powertrain options and expanding production across different regions, Stellantis aims to maintain the model's competitiveness while addressing varying consumer preferences and regulatory requirements in different markets.

Industry experts view this announcement as a strategic move by Stellantis to balance its production capabilities, address market challenges, and position itself for future growth in the evolving automotive sector. The company's investment in the Melfi plant and its commitment to diverse powertrain technologies demonstrate its dedication to maintaining a strong manufacturing presence in Italy while adapting to changing market dynamics and consumer expectations.
