Ford's iconic Capri reimagined: From Crossover to Coupe in virtual redesign

In an era where traditional passenger cars are rapidly disappearing from American roads, Ford's decision to revive the beloved Capri nameplate as a crossover SUV has stirred mixed emotions among automotive enthusiasts. The original Capri, a fastback coupe that captured hearts in Europe much like the Mustang did in America, has undergone a dramatic transformation for its 2025 reincarnation. However, not everyone is thrilled with this new direction.

The automotive landscape in the United States has shifted dramatically in recent years. Even the iconic Mazda MX-5 Miata has seen a significant drop in sales, with numbers plummeting by over 27% in the first half of the year. Luxury brands like Audi have taken note of this trend, quietly removing all coupe and convertible models, including the high-performance RS 5, from their U.S. lineup for the upcoming 2025 model year.

This shift away from traditional passenger cars is evident across America's "Big Three" automakers. General Motors will soon have only the C8 Chevrolet Corvette in production as a dedicated car model, with the Malibu sedan set to be discontinued. Ford's car offerings have dwindled to just the Mustang range, which now includes the Mustang Mach-E crossover. Stellantis brands are following suit, with Chrysler focusing on the Pacifica minivan and Dodge preparing to launch its eighth-generation Charger in both two-door and four-door configurations.

Given this context, Ford's decision to bring back the Capri as a coupe-SUV crossover rather than a traditional coupe was perhaps inevitable. The new Capri shares its underpinnings with the all-new Explorer Electric, both utilising Volkswagen AG's MEB architecture – a platform also found in various models from Volkswagen, Audi, Skoda, and Cupra.

While many fans were disappointed by the Capri's crossover redesign, the digital realm has offered a glimpse of what could have been. Renowned digital artist Theottle took on the challenge of virtually transforming the 2025 Ford Capri EV back into a two-door coupe. Using the premium Audi A5 Coupe as a reference for size and proportions, Theottle meticulously reskinned the new Capri design onto an S5 coupe body.

The process, though condensed into a four-minute video, was undoubtedly time-consuming and complex. Despite the effort, even Theottle admitted that the final result still appeared "bland and bulky," much like the crossover version. This sentiment highlights the challenges designers face in modernising classic nameplates while maintaining their essence.

Nevertheless, the virtual redesign has ignited discussions among car enthusiasts. For many, seeing the Capri return to its coupe roots, even if only in digital form, is a welcome sight. It serves as a reminder of the model's heritage and the emotional connection many still have with traditional sports coupes.
