Can-Am revives its legacy with Pulse and Origin

Can-Am Pulse

Can-Am, a name once synonymous with motorcycle racing success, has officially entered the electric motorcycle arena with the introduction of its first two models: the Can-Am Pulse and the Can-Am Origin. This launch is not just about new products; it represents a return to the brand's roots, as well as a bold step into the future of electric mobility. With this move, Can-Am seeks to re-establish itself as a formidable player in the global motorcycle industry, blending its rich history with modern innovation.

A Journey from Legacy to Innovation

Can-Am's re-entry into the two-wheel market has been a highly anticipated event. The brand, known for its dominance on the race tracks decades ago, had been relatively quiet in recent years. However, the company made its intentions clear in early 2022, hinting at a future that would embrace electric mobility. Fast forward two years, and the promises made are now a reality with the launch of the Pulse and Origin models.

The Can-Am Pulse is designed for urban riders, offering a "playful and well-balanced" experience tailored for city commuting. On the other hand, the Can-Am Origin is a dual-sport model that caters to riders who seek both on-road convenience and off-road adventure. Despite their differences, both models share the same Rotax E-Power drivetrain, highlighting Can-Am's commitment to providing a versatile and powerful electric riding experience.

Key Specifications and Features

Both the Pulse and Origin are equipped with 8.9 kWh battery packs, placing them in the mid-range category in terms of battery capacity. The Pulse offers an estimated city range of 100 miles (160 km), while the Origin provides a slightly lower range of 90 miles (145 km). These figures, while modest compared to some competitors, are sufficient for most urban and short-distance riders. Additionally, the smaller battery size allows for quicker charging times, with Can-Am claiming a 20-80% charge in just 50 minutes using a Level 2 charger.

Powering the Pulse and Origin is a 47 hp (35 kW) electric motor, which places these models in line with entry-level offerings from brands like Zero Motorcycles. While they may not match the sheer power of industry leaders like LiveWire or Energica, both Can-Am models are capable of impressive acceleration. The Pulse can go from 0 to 60 mph (0-96 km/h) in just 3.8 seconds, while the Origin achieves the same in 4.3 seconds. This performance ensures that riders will not feel left behind, whether navigating city streets or tackling rugged trails.

Distinctive Design and Technology

The Can-Am Pulse stands out as a naked bike, compact and agile, making it an ideal choice for urban commuters. It features four riding modes, a 1.7-litre glove box with a built-in USB charging port, and 17-inch Dunlop tyres. A highlight of the Pulse is its 10.25-inch touchscreen display with Apple CarPlay integration, allowing riders to stay connected and navigate with ease.

In contrast, the Can-Am Origin is built for versatility, with higher ground clearance, longer travel suspension, and six riding modes. Although it sacrifices some storage space compared to the Pulse, the Origin compensates with dual-sport tyres and enhanced off-road capabilities, making it a perfect companion for weekend trail rides and weekday commutes.

Pricing and Availability

The Can-Am Pulse is priced at $13,999, with a special Pulse ’73 edition available for $15,999. The Origin starts slightly higher at $14,499, with the Origin ’73 edition priced at $16,499. These prices position Can-Am competitively in the electric motorcycle market, offering a blend of affordability and advanced features.

Pre-orders for both models are now open at select BRP dealerships across multiple countries, including France, Germany, Spain, the UK, and the United States. Production is set to begin in the fourth quarter of 2024, with deliveries expected to start in early 2025.

A New Chapter for Can-Am

With the launch of the Pulse and Origin, Can-Am is not only returning to its two-wheel heritage but also charting a new course in the electric motorcycle industry. By combining its legacy with cutting-edge technology, Can-Am aims to attract a new generation of riders while staying true to its roots. As the electric motorcycle market continues to grow, Can-Am’s latest offerings are well-positioned to make a significant impact.
