Audi launches third-generation Q5 with advanced software and driver assistance upgrades

Audi has introduced the third-generation Q5, a pivotal update to its globally top-selling model, as part of an aggressive product rollout initiative. Designed on the Premium Platform Combustion (PPC) architecture, also used in the recently debuted A5 sedan and wagon, the new Q5 represents a significant leap forward in Audi’s lineup.

"This launch marks a crucial step in revitalising our portfolio," stated Audi CEO Gernot Doellner, underlining the strategic importance of the Q5 in Audi’s rejuvenation strategy.

Scheduled for release alongside 19 other new models by 2025, including the A6 large electric sedan, the Q5 aims to build on its predecessor’s success. In 2023, the Q5 accounted for over 331,928 units globally, out of Audi’s total sales of 1.90 million vehicles.

Manufactured at Audi’s facility in San Jose Chiapa, Mexico, the Q5 is strategically positioned for its largest market, the United States, where nearly half of its sales originate. Additionally, a long-wheelbase version is produced in Changchun, China, catering to regional preferences.

In Europe, the Q5 has consistently ranked among the top premium midsize SUVs, despite a 26% decline in sales in the first seven months of this year, trailing Audi’s electric Q4 SUV.

The European launch of the Q5 will feature three combustion engine options, all equipped with 48-volt mild-hybrid technology. The base model, powered by a 201-hp 2.0-liter turbocharged gasoline engine, starts at €52,300 in Germany. The lineup includes a diesel variant at €57,100 and the high-performance SQ5, boasting a 371-hp 3.0-liter V-6 turbocharged gasoline engine, starting at €82,900.

Orders for the Q5 open in September for delivery in the first quarter of 2025. The vehicle’s mild-hybrid system, utilising a belt-starter generator and a 1.7 kWh lithium iron phosphate battery, adds 24 hp to the engine’s output.

Audi’s design philosophy for the new Q5 emphasises a bold front end with a wider ‘single frame’ grille and distinctive lighting elements. The interior is crafted to evoke a welcoming ambience, featuring advanced OLED technology in a panoramic display configuration.

Enhanced by Volkswagen Group’s E-cubed electrical architecture, the Q5 integrates Software 1.2 from Cariad and operates on Android Automotive OS, promising an enriched digital experience. The cockpit includes an 11.9-inch driver-facing digital display and a central 14.5-inch touchscreen, with an optional 10.9-inch display for the front passenger.

Driver assistance technologies such as rear parking sensors and lane departure warning come standard, with options for adaptive cruise control and a customisable head-up display.

Audi has yet to confirm if the coupe-styled Sportback model will be part of the third-generation Q5 lineup, focusing initially on the standard model's release.

The Q5’s launch underscores Audi’s commitment to technological innovation and competitive product offerings, aiming to redefine consumer expectations in the premium midsize SUV segment.
