Washington DC, United States

United States former president and Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump was slammed by netizens after he proposed a bizarre solution to the crime which appeared to have been lifted straight from the horror film The Purge.

While addressing a rally in Erie, Pennsylvania, on Sunday (Sep 29), the US Republican presidential candidate said that criminals "have to be taught" a lesson.

For this, Trump suggested, "If you had one really violent day. One rough hour — and I mean real rough — the word would get out and it would end immediately."

The former president said that the crime rate has been high in the United States because of police not being "allowed to do their job" because Democrat presidential nominee Kamala Harris and "the liberal left won’t let them."

Reacting to Trump’s proposal, several netizens said that the idea had some serious resemblance with The Purge, which is a dystopian horror film franchise.

The first Purge film was released in 2013. In the movie, a 12-hour period was declared every year in the US during which all kinds of crime were declared legal.

Reacting to it on X, journalist Brian Krassenstein said, "Did Trump just f***ing suggest The Purge?"

Meanwhile, another X user Mark Rothchild said, "The Purge. He’s endorsing The Purge."

"Trump is literally proposing The Purge lmao," said Armand Domalewski.

Meanwhile, Ahmed Baba wrote on X, "So to be clear, Trump is calling for a one-way Purge-style day where police are allowed to unleash brutality on civilians. His campaign will try and spin this but that’s exactly what it sounds like."

X user Noah Berlatsky said, "He’s not proposing the purge. He’s proposing Kristallnacht. This is one of those cases where I’m afraid that the fictional fascism has overwritten the actual fascism in unhelpful ways."

"In The Purge, the police won’t respond to calls for help. Trump is proposing a state programme in which police are empowered to murder marginalised people," he added.

Taking to X, technologist Jim Stewartson called it as "one of the most dangerous speeches of the 21st Century".

"Anyone who thinks Trump doesn't dream about ruling over a violent fascist regime is kidding themselves," commented another user.

"How could somebody listen to this and be OK with? How can you trust this guy with nuclear codes again?" an X user said.

"Trump really has lost his marbles," another user wrote.
