Pakistan’s capital, Islamabad, is under strict security lockdown as Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif met Chinese Premier Li Qiang on Monday. Pakistan's Prime Minister's Office said Li’s visit is the first by a Chinese premier to visit the country in 11 years. PM Shehbaz Sharif received Li at the airport. The government announced a three-day public holiday in Islamabad, with businesses and schools shut and a large contingent of paramilitary and police forces deployed.

Chinese PremierLI will attend the 23rd Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO), meeting of the Council of the Heads of Government (CHG) scheduled on October 15 and 16, 2024.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Chinese Premier Li Qiang jointly inaugurated Gwadar International Airport. While addressing a ceremony of the airport’s virtual inauguration with the Chinese Premier, PM Shehbaz said the landmark achievement was about the time-tested friendship between the two nations. The two leaders unveiled the plaque of Gwadar International Airport. The inaugural ceremony was attended by the members of both delegations, military leadership, ministers, and senior officials.

Pakistan's PM expressed hope that the completion of the airport will transform Gwadar's economy. He said the completion highlights the commitment and support of Chinese leadership to Pakistan's economic agenda and help develop backward areas. He also said that both sides have signed several memorandums of understanding (MOUs) in the fields of commerce, agriculture, and industry.

He told the Chinese premier, “No doubt these MoUs will shape into agreements very soon through joint efforts of both countries. Once again, I thank you for your visit to Pakistan out of your busy schedule which is a reflection of your commitment to promoting friendship between the two countries.”

He also mentioned comprehensive discussions that were held between both sides and thanked President Xi Jinping, the Chinese premier and the Chinese citizens for their gift resembling Gwadar International Airport.

The Chinese premier congratulated Pakistanis upon the virtual inauguration of the airport, saying it was a manifestation of the commitment of Pakistani and Chinese engineers and workers. He said it was an important step for realising the vision of regional connectivity.

He further mentioned that as a symbol of cooperation, “CPEC played a positive role in Pakistan’s economic and social development and regional integration.” Chinese premier LI termed Pak-China ties a “special relationship and friendship” and said the all-weather strategic partnership was further deepening. He added, “The unique and unbreakable time-tested ironclad friendship stood the global changing landscape.” Pakistan’s PM expressed his deepest gratitude to China for its support and dedication to help support the country to grow.
