Mutilated bodies found at dumpsite in Kenya's Nairobi, probe launched

Several mutilated bodieswere found discarded in plastic sacks at arubbish dump in a slum of Nairobi in Kenya. A report by a news agency on Saturday (July 13) said that the bodies were discovered on Friday in Mukuru, south of Nairobi. On Saturday,Kenyan police were searching through the dump watched by angry crowds.
The country's police watchdog has said it is investigating whether there is any police involvement in the gruesome discovery. An investigation was launched into the incident.

AFP reported that theIndependent Police Oversight Authority (IPOA) is also looking into claims of abductions of demonstrators who went missing after widespread anti-government protests.
Local media reported thatmore bags containing human remains had been recovered by police from rubbish-strewn waters at a garbage site in an abandoned quarry.A day earlier,police said the severely mutilated bodies of six women tied up in plastic bags were found in the dumpsite, causing shock and anger among locals.

The IPOA pointed out thatbodies, wrapped in bags and secured by nylon ropes, had visible marks of torture and mutilation.
The Kenyan policeare already under sharp scrutiny after dozens of people were killed during the demonstrations in June. Thepolice are feared and face frequent allegations of extrajudicial killings but are seldom convicted.
Was there involvement of police?
IPOA said on Saturday as the police investigations unfolded into the discovery of bodies in Nairobi, it was "keenly independently undertaking preliminary inquiries to establish whether there was any police involvement in the deaths, or failure to act to prevent them."
The agency also called for public help in its investigations into reports of abductions, unlawful arrests and disappearances during the anti-government protests.
