Melania Trump's parents were granted US citizenship Thursday.

Viktor and Amalija Knavs, they're originally Slovenian, obtained their citizenship through sponsorship of their adult daughter.

Melania of course is the First Lady of the US.

While her husband, US President Donald Trump, has always taken a very hard line on immigration, including criticising theso-called "chain" migration which allows naturalised US citizens to sponsor close relatives for permanent residency.

Trump has argued that the system takes away jobs from Americans and threatens national security.

He also called for a merit-based system that prefers more educated, English-speaking professionals.

Viktor and Amalija, who are 73 and 71 respectively, had been living in the US on green cards.

They've visited Washington frequently since Trump took office.
