Kamala Harris tells podcast Trump no protector of women; mum on assault claim against husband 

Kamala Harris said on a podcast Call Her Daddyon Sunday (Oct 6) that Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump can't be a protector of women, but right-wing commentators slammed the episode for being silent on abuse claims against her husband even as the Democratic vice president defended women's rights.

Speaking about strategies to curtail sexual abuse and domestic abuse, she said she began her public prosecutor career inspired to take action against abusers.

"Tell someone that you trust. Don’t quietly suffer," she said while stressing that women should speak up against abuse.

Sharing with host Alex Cooper a story about how the abuse of her high school friend by her stepfather motivated her legal career, she said,“We have to talk about it. Child sexual assault is something that far more people than the public discourse about it acknowledges.”

Harris stressed that financial independence is important for women, as victims often do not leave their abusers due to economic dependence on them. “When a woman, and in particular if she has children, if she is economically reliant on her abuser, she’s less likely to leave. Most women will endure whatever personal, physical pain they must in order to make sure their kids have a roof over their head or food.”

She argued that for women to be protected, it is important that they are empowered when it comes to finance.“Often, the abuser will tell her that if she tells then something worse will happen, and that is usually wrong. And know that there are people that want you to be safe.”

Harris slammed Trump for his claims about protecting women, saying,“So, this is the same guy...that said women should be punished for having abortions. This is the same guy who uses the same kind of language he does to describe women? So yeah, there you go.”

But the Democratic vice president was slammed by right-wing media as she was silent on claims that her husband Doug Emhoff physically assaulted a former girlfriend.

The drunken assault allegedly took place in 2012.Emhoff's team has rejected the claims as false.

In August, Emhoff admitted to having cheated on his first wife, with media reports alleging that he got a nanny pregnant.
