"So far there are no reports of injuries or major damage, but teams are gathering information," Chilean President Gabriel Boric wrote on X.

Chile is located along the Pacific "Ring of Fire," an arc of intense seismic activity that extends from Japan through Southeast Asia and across the Pacific basin.

Notably, in 2010, an 8.8-magnitude earthquake triggered a tsunami that devastated entire villages in southern and central Chile, resulting in the deaths of approximately 520 people.

Bordered by the Pacific Ocean to the west and the Andes mountain range to the east, Chile is also one of the most seismically active countries in the world.

The epicenter of Thursday's earthquake was located about 50 miles from Chile's border with Argentina.
