DePape "will now face justice for the violence that he wrought as a result of overheated dangerous and divisive partisan rhetoric spewed online and in person," said San Francisco district attorney Brooke Jenkins in the statement.

"While some politicians made light of this incident and joked about it to score political points, this was a horrific attack on one of our leaders, a family, and our democracy. We must all do our part to stand for justice and the rule of law," added Jenkins, in an apparent reference to Donald Trump.

Trump, the Republican presidential nominee, has been known to make light of the horrible attack on Pelosi.

In September 2023, speaking at the California Republican Party Fall Convention, Trump said he would "stand up to crazy Nancy Pelosi" if reelected president. He then asked his supporters, "How's her husband doing by the way?" and joked a "wall around her house" didn't do a "good job" of protecting her 82-year-old husband from an intruder.

The 2022 assault

On October 28, 2022, David DePape broke into Pelosi's house and bludgeoned Paul. The horrifying attack was captured on the police bodycam.

At the time, Nancy Pelosi, a Democrat, was second in line to the US Presidency and was regularly the target of often outlandish far-right conspiracy theories, one of which was behind DePape's attack.

DePape, as per reports, entered the couple's house with the intent to harm Nancy Pelosi. However, Nancy was not home, and he instead encountered her elderly, 82-year-old husbandand engaged in what DePape later characterised as a "pretty amicable" conversation before Paul Pelosi was able to call for help.

When the police got there, DePape hit the octogenarian with a hammer, causing a skull fracture and knocking him out. Pelosi stayed in the hospital for a week and had to undergo surgery for his injury.

As per the San Francisco Chronicle, moments before his sentencing, the attacker made a rambling, tearful statement about conspiracy theories, including the 9/11 attacks and "evil magic murder rituals."However, he did not apologise to the Pelosi family.
