India's rainfall plunges to 24-year low, drought fears return, kharif crops in danger

India is facing its weakest monsoon start in nearly a quarter of a century, threatening crops, farmers, food production and bringing about fears of drought. India experienced a rainfall deficit of around 23 per cent between June 1 and July 16, compared to the usual. At the same time, rainfall for the week of July 9 to 15 alone was 51 percent below normal.
