Thewoman who was discovered bound to a tree in Maharashtra's Sindhudurg district remains unable to provide statement to authorities as she is severely malnourished after being deprived of food for several days, the police informed on Monday (July 29).

The woman has been identified as Lalita Kayi Kumar, and was found chained in Sonurli village, around 450 kilometres from the state capital Mumbai on Saturday (July 27), after a shepherd heard her cries and alerted the police.

A photocopy of her US passport was recovered from the woman, along with additional documents, including an Aadhaar card indicating a Tamil Nadu address.

"The woman is too weak to give a statement due to severe malnutrition and exposure to heavy rains," an official said.

Kumar was first taken to a hospital in Sawantwadi in the Konkan region and then to Oros in Sindhudurg.

"Taking into consideration her mental and health condition, she was moved to Goa Medical College for advanced treatment. Her condition has improved, and she is no longer in critical condition. Medical professionals have determined she suffers from psychiatric problems. We also discovered medical prescriptions among her belongings." the official said.

Police suspect husband's involvement

A case of attempted murder against the former husband of the American woman has been registered.

Acting on a note written by the woman while hospitalised, police have filed attempted murder charges against her former husband.

The woman claimed in the note that her former husband, a resident of Tamil Nadu, had tied her with an iron chain in the forest and left the place.

Police had previously stated that her visa had expired and they were in the process of verifying her identity through her documents.

According to the preliminary information obtained by police, the woman has been in India for the past 10 years.

Police have dispatched teams to Tamil Nadu, Goa, and other locations to trace the woman's relatives as part of their investigation.
