Paris mayor wants the Olympic ring to be part of the Eiffel Tower permanently

Paris mayor Anne Hidalgo has sparked a heated argument by saying she would like to leave the Olympic rings on the Eiffel Tower even after the summer games are over.

She told Quest French paper over the weekend: “The decision is up to me, and I have the agreement of the IOC [International Olympic Committee].”

“So yes, they [the rings] will stay on the Eiffel Tower,” she said.

This statement led to the formation of two contrasting opinions. Some Parisians backed the decision, while others were concerned that it would degrade the French capital’s iconic monument.

The five rings, which are the symbol of the Olympics, were installed on the Eiffel Tower on July 26 and were expected to be taken down at the Paralympics’ closing ceremony on September 8.

Hidalgo said they wanted to keep the symbol even after the games, as it symbolises the five continents.

She further added that each ring measures 9 metre in diameter and is too heavy, which would be replaced by a lighter version in the future.

The Socialist mayor also claimed that “the French have fallen in love with Paris again” during the Games, and she wanted “this festive spirit to remain.”

Those in favour said, “The Eiffel Tower is very beautiful, the rings add colour. It’s very nice to see it like this,” a young woman, who is known as Solène, told the France Bleu website.

Manon, a local disapproving of the idea, labelled it as a bad decision, said, “It’s a historic monument, why defile it with rings? It was good for the Olympics but now it’s over, we can move on. Maybe we should remove them and return the Eiffel Tower to how it was before,” he told France Bleu.

One of the social media users on the X platform said thatHidalgo should have discussed this properly before giving the statement.

Hidalgo, who has been a candidate since 2014, is known for her boldness. Being part of the controversy is not a new thing for her.
