India gymnast Dipa Karmakar has retired from the sport at the age of 31. She announced the decision on Monday (Oct 7) in a heartfelt letter shared on social media.

Karmakar has been an iconic figure in gymnastic in India, as she became the first gymnast to represent India in Olympics since 1964 by qualifying for 2016 Rio games. She is also the first Indian female to represent India in gymnastic in Olympics. She performed brilliantly in Rio games and missed the bronze medal by a whisker.

The athlete hit a setback in October 2021 when she was banned for 21 months for doping. She made a return in Asian Championships earlier this year and won a gold medal as well. Karmakar, however, revealed that she could not push her body anymore.

“My last victory at the Asian Championships was a turning point,” said Karmakar. “Because until then I felt I could push my body, but there are times when the body tells you it is time to rest."

Manon, a local disapproving of the idea, labelled it as a bad decision, said, “It’s a historic monument, why defile it with rings? It was good for the Olympics but now it’s over, we can move on. Maybe we should remove them and return the Eiffel Tower to how it was before,” he told France Bleu.

One of the social media users on the X platform said that&nbsp;Hidalgo should have discussed this properly before giving the statement.

Hidalgo, who has been a candidate since 2014, is known for her boldness. Being part of the controversy is not a new thing for her.

Former Olympic gold medallist Tom Daley said Monday it was the "right time" to retire as Britain's most successful diver walked away from the sport following the Paris Games.

Daley, who won five Olympic medals during his decorated career, revealed the decision to call time on the sport during an interview with British Vogue.

The 30-year-old&nbsp;bowed out after winning silver in the Olympic men's synchronised 10m platform in France, having clinched the gold medal in the same event at the Tokyo Games three years ago.

"I have to make the decision at some point, and it feels like the right time. It's the right time to call it a day," Daley said.

Daley's gold in Tokyo came alongside Matty Lee and he was back to defend his title in Paris after being convinced by his six-year-old son Robbie to return to the sport.

Daley and partner Noah Williams claimed silver in the competition, finishing behind China a fortnight ago.

Looking forward to spending more time with his family away from the Olympic spotlight, Daley has no fears he will regret retiring.

Of those, 4,360 were denied access to the Games, with people close to Darmanin telling AFP on Sunday that 880 were barred over suspicions of foreign interference.

Its diminished appeal was clear at the time of bidding for the 2024 and 2028 Summer Olympics when there were only two candidates, Paris and Los Angeles, who divided the honours between themselves.

Since then, the 2032 Games have been awarded to Brisbane, Australia, and Bach told AFP in an interview at IOC headquarters on Friday that there were "double-digit" numbers of countries in the running for 2036.

"We have never been in such a favourable position. We have never seen such a high interest in hosting the Olympic Games," he said on Friday from his offices that overlook Lake Geneva.&nbsp;

After a string of Games in Western democracies, 2036 could be an opportunity for Saudi Arabia, sole candidate for the 2032 FIFA World Cup; Qatar, a losing candidate for 2032; Indonesia, or India.

"We are now 12 years away from these Games, so it is way too early to comment on any of these interests," Bach replied when asked about Saudi Arabia and Qatar, whose human rights records would make them contested destinations.

<h2>- New model Olympics -</h2>

Bach attributes the revival of interest in hosting the Olympics to reforms undertaken on his watch, which have sought to put an end to the wasteful spending that has near-bankrupted several host cities in the past.

Instead of oversized and gleaming new stadiums and facilities that often fall empty afterwards, the IOC now encourages the use of existing or temporary infrastructure.

An estimated 96 percent of the sport during Paris 2024, which begins on July 26, will take place in existing or temporary locations, while LA 2028 might reach 100 percent.

"Paris is the first Olympic Games which is absolutely in line with our Olympic agenda reforms from start to finish," Bach added.

As a result, French organisers claim that their event will be responsible for around half the carbon emissions of previous editions in London 2012 and Rio in 2016.

Critics, such as environmental research group Carbon Market Watch, commend the efforts to improve, but remain sceptical that the Games can ever be sustainable.&nbsp;

"The most significant factor affecting the games' environmental footprint is its enormity," a report from the group stated in mid-April.

Bach acknowledges that global heating is an increasing challenge, above all for the snow-dependent Winter Games but also the much larger Summer version.&nbsp;

He confirmed that in the future, the Summer Olympics might have to move from their traditional slot in July and August to the cooler autumn months -- as the 2022 football World Cup did in Qatar.

"The international sports calendar may look very different from the one we are used to now," he said.

He also stressed the importance of the ongoing revolution in artificial intelligence, which led the IOC to unveil a strategy last week to harness the computer technology to help athletes.

But he warned too of the potential downside -- of AI-powered medical advances enabling even more sophisticated cheating.

"I'm not a prophet, but when you look at the combination of AI and biochemistry, you can arrive at a rather dystopian conclusion of what this could mean... to improve the performance of an individual," he said.

The development of e-sports is also creating a growing challenge for eyeballs, particularly among young people.

"I don't think that you will see e-sports events at the Olympic Games, but you may see very soon its own Olympic e-sports Games," he said.
