But somewhere in a data centre in a remote part of the world, all our requests are being processed. The answers presented on our screens, to be hurriedly consumed, do not appear out of thin air. They are processed using massive computing power, often on what are called ‘supercomputers.’

These supercomputers are run on real-life resources like water, fossil fuels, and even nuclear energy.&nbsp;

Sasha Luccioni, the climate lead for the AI company Hugging Face, and her team conducted research&nbsp;and found&nbsp;that 500 metric tonnes of carbon dioxide&nbsp;was&nbsp;produced just in the training of ChatGPT’s GPT3 model—the equivalent of over a million miles driven by average gasoline-powered cars.

So why are we not focusing on artificial intelligence’s not-so-hidden cost to the environment? How does this fare in the era of the climate crisis?&nbsp;

<h2>The Data Centre: A massive fuel-eating system&nbsp;</h2>

Contrary to popular belief, each colourful WhatsApp sticker that we ask Meta AI to generate is processed at a physical data centre.

A data centre is a large group of linked computers used for remote storage and processing.&nbsp;

In a nutshell, it processes our requests and gives us the final products.

But these centres consume massive amounts of energy and use natural resources.

They run on fossil fuels, which stress an already overused planet.&nbsp;

<h2>The Cost of Cooling</h2>

All machines, including massive groups of computers, produce a lot of heat while working.

Just like an air conditioner cools the room while producing heat, a processor or a computer also produces heat while computing.

This heat needs to be cooled down.

To do this, water, often fresh water, is used by companies. Traditional air conditioning systems, which use less water but more electricity, are also used to reduce the temperature.&nbsp;

This creates further pressure on the environment where the data centres are located, causing local communities to face acute water shortages.&nbsp;

After a lengthy legal battle, it was revealed that Google’s data centres in the city of Dalles, Oregon, used a quarter of the town’s water supply.

The environmental costs of AI are high, but can humanity function without this advanced technology?&nbsp;

<h2>Necessary Evil?&nbsp;</h2>

Artificial intelligence has done wonders in battling the climate emergency, to an extent. Using AI models, scientists can now create detailed maps of flood-affected areas, identify at-risk communities, and help authorities take action.

Meteorological departments across the globe depend on advanced AI to predict the weather, making such technology crucial for the world's food system.

“AI useful to aid in the prediction of which areas are identifiable as most vulnerable to heat waves and flash floods, but is not likely to support any meaningful mitigation measures” says Maulik, a climate activist.

Artificial intelligence is now essential to human well-being, but the conscious and sustainable use of AI is the need of the hour if we are to continue reaping its benefits.

<h2>Sustainable AI&nbsp;</h2>

Considering the amount of resources that AI uses (some call it ‘planet-guzzling tech'), it is high time that we stop using it to finish our book reports, create goofy pictures of fictional characters, and entertain us when we are bored.

Responsible use of technology will free up the space for data centres to work on things that benefit humankind while also reducing their carbon footprints.&nbsp;

The world has seen the environmental cost of technology many times before. From the invention of the steam engine to commercial aviation, it is now common knowledge that any advancement increases environmental distress.

This was also on display during the era of cryptocurrency. Crypto-mining also consumes massive amounts of energy, often sourced from resources like coal.&nbsp;

But “it would be fanciful to suggest that companies invested in developing artificial intelligence with the overarching goal of maximising profit by trying to cut down on payroll are at all motivated by the climate emergency” says Maulik.

This creates further pressure on the environment where the data centres are located, causing local communities to face acute water shortages. After a lengthy legal battle, it was revealed that Google’s data centres in the city of Dalles, Oregon, used a quarter of the town’s water supply. The environmental costs of AI are high, but can humanity function without this advanced technology? Necessary Evil? Artificial intelligence has done wonders in battling the climate emergency, to an extent. Using AI models, scientists can now create detailed maps of flood-affected areas, identify at-risk communities, and help authorities take action. Meteorological departments across the globe depend on advanced AI to predict the weather, making such technology crucial for the world's food system. “AI useful to aid in the prediction of which areas are identifiable as most vulnerable to heat waves and flash floods, but is not likely to support any meaningful mitigation measures” says Maulik, a climate activist. Artificial intelligence is now essential to human well-being, but the conscious and sustainable use of AI is the need of the hour if we are to continue reaping its benefits. Although iOS currently offers a sizable library of nearly 3,800 standard emoji to choose from, the new Genmoji capability will provide greater flexibility to users by tailoring them in line with the user’s taste and choice of expression in conversations.&nbsp;

Mt Everest is visited by thousands of climbers every year. Last year, a total of 6,600 climbers made it to the top and each of them left an estimated 8kg of waste (average) on their way up and down. According to DJI, this has turned Everest into the “world’s highest garbage dump”.

The company added that an estimated 140 tonnes of waste have accumulated on the mountain over the past seven decades. This waste includes empty oxygen bottles, abandoned tents and food packaging.

The reason why drones are required in cleanliness operations is that local guides must cross the Khumbu Icefall, an unstable river of ice that is one of the most difficult sections of the mountain, to carry waste from Camp 1 to the base camp.

However, according to OpenAI,&nbsp;the outage has officially lasted just over two hours now.&nbsp;

Several users on X complained about the outage. "Chat GPT is down, I'm not doing any actual thinking, I refuse. I'll just sit here until it becomes available again," X user Bitcoin Lebowski said.

"ChatGPT is down. What if it never comes back and we have to use our own brains to write stuff again?," another user by the name of Tokyo Todd wrote on the microblogging site.

"How am I supposed to get any work done with ChatGPT being down?," a user Dorian Develops said in a post.&nbsp;

Tuesday's outage came days after the privacy watchdog of the European Union (EU) said that OpenAI's&nbsp;efforts to produce less factually false output from its&nbsp;ChatGPT&nbsp;chatbot were not enough to ensure full compliance with EU data rules.

"Although the measures taken in order to comply with the transparency principle are beneficial to avoid misinterpretation of the output of&nbsp;ChatGPT, they are not sufficient to comply with the data accuracy principle," the taskforce said in a report released on May 25.&nbsp;

"In addition, the outputs provided by&nbsp;ChatGPT&nbsp;are likely to be taken as factually accurate by end users, including information relating to individuals, regardless of their actual accuracy," the taskforce added.&nbsp;

Open AI, the creators of ChatGPT and Meta, which is the parent company of Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp has said that they have acted on content which is being used to influence Indian elections and further Khalistani propaganda.

OpenAI highlighted in their report "AI and Covert Influence Operations: Latest Trends" that they disrupted activities of an Israeli commercial company, STOIC which was involved in generating content related to the Gaza conflict and Indian elections.&nbsp;

Initially targeting audiences in Canada, the US, and Israel with content in English and Hebrew, STOIC shifted its focus to India in early May, generating English-language web articles and social media comments critical of the ruling BJP party and supportive of the opposition Congress party.&nbsp;

OpenAI stated, "in May, we disrupted some activity focused on the Indian elections less than 24 hours after it began."

The report added, "the network began generating comments that focused on India, criticized the ruling BJP party and praised the opposition Congress party."

Simultaneously, Meta's "Adversarial Threat Report" revealed the removal of multiple accounts linked to a network originating in China supporting Khalistani propaganda. Meta's report said it removed "37 Facebook accounts, 13 Pages, five Groups, and nine accounts on Instagram for violating our policy against coordinated inauthentic behavior."&nbsp;

The network targeted the global Sikh community across various countries, including Australia, Canada, India, New Zealand, Pakistan, the UK, and Nigeria.

Humanity is in a race against time to harness the colossal emerging power of artificial intelligence for the good of all, while averting dire risks, a top UN official said Thursday.

"We've let the genie out of the bottle," said Doreen Bogdan-Martin, head of the United Nations' International Telecommunications Union (ITU).

"We are in a race against time," she told the opening of a two-day AI for Good Global Summit in Geneva.&nbsp;

"Recent developments in AI have been nothing short of extraordinary."&nbsp;

The thousands gathered at the conference heard how advances in generative AI are already speeding up efforts to solve some of the world's most pressing problems, such as climate change, hunger and social care.&nbsp;

"I believe we have a once-in-a-generation opportunity to guide AI to benefit all the world's people," Bogdan-Martin told AFP ahead of the summit.&nbsp;

But she lamented Thursday that one-third of humanity still remains completely offline, and is "excluded from the AI revolution without a voice".&nbsp;

"This digital and technological divide is no longer acceptable."&nbsp;

Bogdan-Martin highlighted that AI holds "immense potential for both good and bad", stressing that it was vital to "make AI systems safe".

- Concentrated power - 
She said that was especially important given that "2024 is the biggest election year in history", with votes in dozens of countries, including in the United States.

She flagged the "rise of sophisticated deep fakes disinformation campaigns" and warned that the "misuse of AI threaten democracy (and) also endangers young people's mental health and compromises cyber-security."&nbsp;

Other experts at Thursday's conference agreed.&nbsp;

"We have to understand what we're steering towards," said Tristan Harris, a technology ethicist who co-founded the Center for Humane Technology.&nbsp;

He pointed to lessons from social media -- initially touted as a way to connect people and give everyone a voice, but which also brought addiction, viral misinformation, online harassment and ballooning mental health issues.&nbsp;

Harris warned the incentive driving the companies rolling out the technology risked dramatically swelling such negative impacts.&nbsp;

"The number one thing that is driving Open AI or Google behaviour is the race to actually achieve market dominance," he said. &nbsp;

In such a world, he said, "governance that moves at the speed of technology" is vital.&nbsp;

- Changing the social contract - 
OpenAI chief Sam Altman, who rose to global prominence after OpenAI released ChatGPT in 2022, acknowledged the dangers.

Speaking via video-link, he told the gathering that "cyber-security" was currently the biggest concern when it came to negative impacts of the technology.

Further down the road, he said there would likely "be some change required to the social contract, given how powerful we expect this technology to be".

"I'm not a believer that there won't be any jobs... but I do think the whole structure of society itself will be (open to) some degree of debate and reconfiguration."

Overall though, he insisted that from the perspective of how new technologies evolve historically, the AI systems were "generally considered safe and robust".

While welcoming discussions around regulations to stem short-term negative impacts of AI, he warned that it was "difficult" to suggest regulations aimed at reining in future impacts.

"We don't know how society and this technology are going to co-evolve," he said.

Bogdan-Martin meanwhile hailed that governments and others had recently "raced to establish protections" and regulation around the use of AI.

On Wednesday the European Union announced the creation of an AI Office to regulate artificial intelligence under a sweeping new law.

"It's our responsibility to write the next chapter in the great story of humanity, and technology, and to make it safe, to make it inclusive and to make it sustainable," Bogdan-Martin said.
