Scientists have found a unique way to tell the wolves who's the boss. The US Department of Agriculture is using a recording from the popular film Marriage Story to scare away the predators attacking livestock on the farmlands across the West Coast. An audio clip of Scarlett Johansson and Adam Driver fighting with each other in the 2019 movie is being broadcast on the loudspeaker to shoo away the wolves, the Wall Street Journal reported. That's an interesting approach by officials who think the loud noises of the two quarrelling are enough to instil fear in these animals. Paul Wolf, a USDA district supervisor in Oregon, told the WSJ, "I need the wolves to respond and know that, hey, humans are bad", and the shouting and fighting scenes between Johansson and Driver are doing just that.
The Buga Sphere, an unidentified flying object (UFO) seen over Buga, Colombia, in March before being captured from the ground, is reportedly responding to Sanskrit mantras. This viral claim is based on a video on social media showing scientists hovering around the sphere and playing different frequencies, capturing its response. They reportedly witnessed electromagnetic surges and vibrational responses in the UFO when Sanskrit mantras were played. This has intrigued experts studying the strange metallic orb, which some believe has come from outer space, and possibly sent by an advanced alien civilisation. The mysterious object is reacting intelligently to Sanskrit mantras, experts studying the Buga Sphere believe. However, not everyone is convinced and is terming it fake. People are calling the clip “silly science", with one user writing, “Buga...
Nobel Prize winners are people who have excelled in their respective fields. You would think that they are extremely smart people, but some of them have reported to have been afflicted by what is called the "Nobel disease" or "Nobelitis". There is a long list of Nobel Prize winners who are said to have suffered from it. Before you think it's a real physical disease, let us tell you that it is something very different and one that has no real explanation. Boosted by their win, it seems their brains start doing their own thing, leading them to come up with weird and unscientific views on different things. According to IFLScience, the win does something to these people who start putting forward pseudoscientific beliefs that have no link to their field of study. According to a chapter in Critical Thinking in Psychology, the list of such Nobel Prize winners is quite long. It mentions strange cases, one of them being of a scientist who claimed that a glowing green raccoon on a motorcycle paid him a visit. However, most of them strangely got interested in psychic research and the paranormal world. Sounds weird for a scientist.
The interstellar object, or the alien ship, travelling towards the inner solar system, will reach Earth and put its plan into action between November 21 and December 5, 2025. This is what Harvard scientists Avi Loeb, famous for his theories on extra-terrestrial life, has claimed in his latest revelation about the mysterious visitor. This is based on his calculations taking into consideration the speed with which the object is travelling, its current position and the point in space it would be in October. The interstellar visitor 3I/ATLAS has intrigued scientists across the world. While almost everyone else thinks it is a comet, Loeb says it is almost impossible that it is a natural object. He strongly believes that it has been made by an advanced alien civilisation and is a threat to our planet, as it could be carrying either a probe or a weapon. Loeb has figured out the time period it can intercept Earth by looking at where the object would be later this year. According to him, 3I/ATLAS will move behind the Sun in October from Earth's perspective. Since we won't be able to see it at this time, he thinks this is when the alien ship will prepare to attack us. The alien ship travelling towards Earth can attack us between November and December, Avi Loeb claims. He also thinks it is planting probes on other planets and will use its time behind the sun to prepare an attack on us because it will be invisible.

It has been travelling for billions of years, and Loeb says, a natural object that huge could not have taken this trip. In fact, he thinks that the odds of 3I/ATLAS being completely natural are just 0.2 per cent.

The alien ship travelling towards Earth can attack us between November and December, Avi Loeb claims. He also thinks it is planting probes on other planets and will use its time behind the sun to prepare an attack on us because it will be invisible.

A facility that once produced parts for US nuclear weapons was found to be housing a radioactive wasp nest with extremely high radiation levels. The revelation was made in the US Department of Energy report released last week. The site near Aiken in South Carolina was harbouring a wasp nest with radioactive levels ten times what is permitted. The report stated that there were no wasps in the nest, although it was sprayed to kill any. The nest was then "bagged as radiological waste." The shocking discovery raised fears that the site could have had a nuclear leak. However, the investigators did not find any signs of a leak, BBC reported. They also inspected the nearby area and noted that there was neither any environmental damage nor impact on the public. The Savannah River Site (SRS) is routinely inspected for nuclear radiation. The nest was discovered by workers on 3 July on a post near the tanks that store millions of gallons of liquid nuclear waste. According to investigators, it had occurred due to "onsite legacy radioactive contamination". The plant was once actively producing parts for nuclear bombs during the Cold War. In the 1950s, plutonium was produced here to build the core of nuclear bombs. Residual radioactivity remains at the site from that time, which was carried to the nest. Environmental activists have slammed the government after the discovery of the wasp nest. The insects could have carried radioactive material with them. However, the energy department wrote in its report that the wasps that lived in the nest would have significantly lower radiation levels than the nest. It also doesn't think that the wasps who built the nest would have gone too far. The report mentioned that wasps travel only a few hundred feet from their nest. Since the nest was found in the middle of the Savannah River Site, it is highly unlikely that the wasps went out of the facility. "No contamination was found in the area," the report notes. "There were no impacts to workers, the environment or the public," the report stated. The discovery of a highly radioactive wasp nest at the Savannah River Site in South Carolina has raised fears of a nuclear leak. Experts think that the contaminated wasps could also have carried the radiation with them. A probe tried to soothe concerns, but a lot of people are pretty angry.

In Mexico, the Jalisco Nueva Generación cartel is believed to have killed thousands of people. However, the police have hardly ever found their remains. Now, in an innovative method, dead pigs are being used to unearth decomposed bodies. Since 2006, over one hundred thousand people have mysteriously vanished, and all of them have reportedly died at the hands of this cartel. This year in March, about 15,500 were reported missing. The members of the Guerreros Buscadores collective have been working for years to find these people. They have come across charred remains and pieces of clothing on a few occasions, but identifying them has remained an impossible task. The federal research institute CentroGeo regularly employs the latest technology, such as scanners and drones, to find the graves of those killed by the cartel. But now the Jalisco Search Commission is putting on human clothes on dead pigs and burying them to search for the hidden bodies. As strange as it might sound, there is a scientific explanation for this method.
Scientists have figured out how potatoes were born. Turns out, one of its parents is the tomato. Eight to nine million years ago, tomatoes and a species that looked like a potato existed. The humble vegetable's lineage is quite confusing. It belongs to a line of species called Petota, which is believed to have been born when the ancestors of the tomato mated with Etuberosum, a species of wild potato. The latter is found in central Chile. This interbreeding is what caused today's potatoes, or tubers, to be born. When wild tomatoes, which grew in the Andes, got together with the wild potato species, a new combination of genes was born in the Petota lineage. This triggered the birth of the potato we eat today. Tubers have not been found in the ancestors of modern tomato and Etuberosum plants. They have never been observed in either lineage since they interbred to produce a hybrid. Researchers who conducted the study said it is amazing how something totally new could be created when two separate species mate with each other. The findings were published Thursday (July 31) in the journal Cell. The journey of a potato started nine million years ago. Its roots can be traced back to a shocking ancestor. It is hard to imagine that something that is so different from the potato could have played a role in the creation of the vegetable.

A British man who had travelled to Turkey for a hair transplant fell sick after the procedure and died. Turkish news outlet OdaTV reported that the 38-year-old went to a private clinic in Istanbul. After the five-hour transplant surgery, he started feeling sick. He was rushed to the hospital but was declared dead, The Mirror reported. An investigation has been opened into the matter. The staff at the clinic are being questioned, and the police are reportedly considering a possible "reckless homicide" charge against them and the surgeon who performed the procedure. The rest of the staff under the scanner include the anaesthesiologist and the nurses. His body was taken to the Forensic Medicine Institute for an autopsy to investigate the cause of his death. Reports suggest that it was sent back to Britain later. The publication quoted the Foreign Office as saying that it is "supporting the family of a British man who died in Turkey and is in contact with the local authorities."
The Cold War period saw the West and the Soviet Union trying to go against each other in almost everything. The two sides are said to have come up with secret programs and missions to gain control over the other. The CIA, the United States' intelligence agency, also has some of them under its belt, according to declassified documents released over the years. One of them was Operation Midnight Climax, which aimed to see how sex and drugs could get a target to reveal sensitive and secret information. Reports suggest that the operation ran from 1954 to 1963 and was a part of MKUltra, the agency's mind-control research program that was flagged as highly controversial. As the description suggests, its aim was to take control of the mind of a foreign adversary so that he would spill secrets of the enemy country. Popular Mechanics, reporting on the program, wrote that under Operation Midnight Climax, an apartment was turned into a brothel where men were lured, drugged with LSD, and their reactions to interrogating questions were filmed. Stephen Kinzer, author of Poisoner in Chief: Sidney Gottlieb and the CIA Search for Mind Control, says the reason the CIA started this was because the Soviet was believed to be making advances in psychological torture and brainwashing. They were convinced that their "minds had been seized". So MKUltra was launched in 1953 with a similar aim. Nearly 100 projects fell under its umbrella, with most of them centred around drugs and other mind-altering chemicals. A chemist named Sidney Gottlieb helped the CIA gain access to LSD. Operation Midnight Climax, the most notorious of all of them, continues to shock the world even 62 years after it ended. Here's what went down in the brothel. Prostitutes were hired and given $100 for each man they lured into the brothel. They were given cocktails laced with LSD. CIA started Operation Midnight Climax in 1954, having prostitutes lure men into a makeshift brothel and drugging them with LSD. They then talked them into revealing their secrets. It was part of an elaborate mind-control operation started to defeat the Soviet Union.

Also Read: US sanctions 6 Indian companies over oil trade with Iran The US suspected minds of American soldiers were seized by the Soviet Union Kinzer says the CIA was shocked to see American soldiers returning from the Korean War confessing to war crimes and even talking about communist propaganda in a positive light. Then the women threw around different types of questions at different intervals to learn at what stage the men were most likely to be at a point where their minds could be controlled. The experiment revealed that the man talked and revealed the most secrets when they were asked to stay longer, even after the sexual part of the transaction had ended.
A Chinese wellness practitioner with no license to practice medicine is injecting bleach into people's tumours. He claims 20 success stories for his treatment that costs $20,000. According to Wired, Chinese "inventor" Xuewu Liu prepares a mix featuring chlorine dioxide, a highly toxic bleach compound, and injects it directly into tumours, claiming it shrinks them. The treatment, which is only available at clinics in China and Germany, is touted by Liu as successful, but a woman has told the publication that it made her illness worse. The woman, who is originally from China but lives in the United Kingdom, reached out to Liu through WhatsApp and got the bleach mix. She administered the supposed treatment herself and says it led to immediate side effects. "It was fine after the injection, but I was woken up by severe pain [like] I had never experienced in my life," the woman said, adding that the pain lasted for three to four days. She stopped it but resumed injecting the tumour a few months later. She then went to China to have Liu do it, despite him not having any medical license. He claimed that he has used the bleach mix on himself over 50 times and never suffered any problems. Liu says personal tests led him to administer the mix on others.
Florida has been taken over by dangerous sticky pink blobs, which officials say can prove lethal to humans. They are urging people not to touch them with their bare hands, and instead to destroy them with protective shoes. Touching these pink clusters can cause infections, and residents should be especially careful not to touch them, as this can trigger problems when they touch their face. The warning was issued by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC). Authorities said that these vivid pink clusters are eggs laid by apple snails from South America that have spread across Florida. It is an invasive species that is posing problems for the ecological system of the state, and if their eggs are allowed to hatch, they can then damage crops and aquatic systems. The boy, Govinda, was playing outside his home when the cobra approached him and recoiled around his hand. The child, thinking it was a toy, bit it. Reports suggest the cobra died on the spot, while the boy fell unconscious. He was rushed to the village clinic, from where he was taken to a government hospital. Villagers believe the child got agitated to see something strange so near him and so bit it. Others think that the child was merely confused about it and, thinking it to be a toy, sank his teeth into it. Meanwhile, people are shocked by the news of an infant's bite killing a cobra snake. The boy's mother was working nearby when the incident happened. Bettiah village: Cobra snake dies from child's bite After the snake recoiled itself onto the boy's hand, the child bit it. It died immediately. Govinda was also affected by it and fell unconscious. After his condition deteriorated, his parents took him to the Primary Health Centre (PHC). The physician there referred him to the Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) in Bettiah. The child received treatment and is now out of danger. Dr Divakant Mishra of GMCH said that there were no signs of poisoning in the boy. Mateshwari Devi, the child's grandmother, said that his mother was collecting wood when the two-feet-long snake appeared. The boy apparently first hit it, and then bit it.

A restaurant in Wisconsin fed hundreds of people food laced with tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the primary ingredient in cannabis. This includes eight children who were sent to the hospital along with several others. The revelation was made in a report by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) on Thursday. The incident happened in October 2024 when several people who had dined at a restaurant visited the hospital with some complaints. Upon investigation, the culprit was found to be the cooking oil. Apparently, the chefs mistook a THC-infused cooking oil for the ordinary canola oil. The pot-luck (or unluck) started on October 22 when people started getting intoxicated after eating at the restaurant. Over three days, at least 85 people between the ages of 1 and 91 visited hospitals with similar complaints. They all had symptoms like dizziness, sleepiness, and anxiety. He informed the officials the same day that there was a cooperative (shared) kitchen in the same building, which was used by another business that produced THC edibles derived from hemp. They were also told that on the same day, October 22, they had run out of oil and so used the oil from the shared kitchen. They took what they thought was canola oil and prepared doughs for pizzas and sandwiches with it. However, it turned out to be a bad idea as what they had used was THC oil. Officials tested a large oil container in the same area, and it came out positive for THC.
There is outrage in China after news spread that a pet clinic had run over a dog because it could not save it. The border collie named Lucky was sent by its owner to the You Bai clinic for sterilisation on July 10. She is accusing the clinic of killing her beloved three-year-old pet dog, who helped her through depression. Lucky was operated upon, after which the clinic took it out on the street and had a car drive over it, SCMP reported. The clinic then called the woman and told her an elaborate story about her dog's death. This made her suspicious about them, and she checked the CCTV footage. It revealed the horrible thing the clinic had done.
Avi Loeb, an Israeli-American theoretical physicist known for talking about aliens, now thinks that the interstellar comet spotted in the solar system is an artificial object sent by an advanced alien civilisation. The Harvard professor points out the cosmic object's trajectory, size and behaviour to suggest that it doesn't appear to be a natural space rock, and is likely a spacecraft. 3I/ATLAS is only the third known interstellar object ever recorded in our solar system. It was detected on July 1 by NASA's ATLAS telescope in Chile and has been classified as a comet. Loeb told Newsweek, "The retrograde orbital plane of 3I/ATLAS around the Sun lies within 5 degrees of that of Earth... The likelihood of that coincidence out of all random orientations is 0.2 per cent." However, other experts have quashed his claims, saying there is nothing that points to it being an alien probe. The comet has travelled from another star system. Scientists have said that it is probably even older than our solar system. It could have taken it billions of years to get here. But Loeb thinks that 3I/ATLAS is so large that it is extremely unlikely it could have naturally taken this journey to reach us. Also Read: Interstellar visitor spotted is only the third: One of the other two appeared to be an 'alien vessel'

Also Read: Voyager spacecraft crossed 'wall of fire' to reach interstellar space. He told MailOnline, "An alternative is that the object targets the inner solar system by some technological design." After the object was spotted for the first time, scientists noted its extremely elliptical orbit and high speed, and both of them pointed to its origins lying outside the solar system. 3I/ATLAS has come from the constellation Sagittarius and is heading towards the inner solar system. Its closest approach to the Sun is expected on October 30, when it will be 210 million km from our star, that is somewhere around the orbit of Mars. It is not expected to reach Earth.

How did such a mammoth object travel all this way to the solar system?

The sheer size of the interstellar visitor also hints that it is not a natural object, Loeb says. Right now, it is 490 million km from Earth. Its size has been measured based on the amount of light it reflects. This calculation states that it is around 20-24km in diameter. It is 200 times larger than 'Oumuamua, the thin and 100-metre-long interstellar visitor that took a trip to the solar system in 2017. Loeb doesn't think an object of this size can travel all the way here without dying out. He told MailOnline that there are about a million objects on the scale of 'Oumuamua for each object that is 24 kilometres in size. "But we haven't seen a million 'Oumuamua-sized interstellar objects before seeing this one; it's very strange," he pointed out. He used previous data to calculate how many objects of this size could exist in the Milky Way. He multiplied this number by the mass of 3I/ATLAS, and the results made "zero sense". He says there is not enough mass to make ample rocks of this size. This means that 3I/ATLAS is a lot rarer than its appearance in our Solar System suggests. Since there aren't a lot of similar objects floating around, it seems strange that one that does is aiming for our inner solar system, Loeb said. The Harvard physicist also dismissed the comet theory, saying there is no direct evidence of dust or gas being released by the object. The 'reddening' caused by dust is how it was concluded to be a comet. Loeb says this could be simply because the object is red.

Avi Loeb, known for his theories on aliens, thinks that the interstellar object in our solar system is a spacecraft sent by aliens. He points to its trajectory, size and speed to state that it is almost impossible that such a natural cosmic object could have travelled so far.

Loeb has even written a paper that will be published by the Research Notes of the AAS, detailing the scenarios that can facilitate such a mammoth object to reach our solar system.

The pilot of a Delta flight going at 96 km/hr had to push the brakes suddenly when, in a bizarre twist, an AeroMéxico plane flew over the first plane and landed right in front of it. The shocking incident at Benito Juarez International Airport is now under investigation. The two airlines have issued statements, saying passenger safety is their top priority. Delta Air Lines Boeing 737 jet was set to take off for Atlanta when it stopped on the runway after an AeroMéxico Embraer 190 regional jet landed right in front of it on the same runway. According to FlightRadar24, the two aircraft stood only about 200 feet apart from each other. CNN reported that the Delta plane with 144 passengers and six crew members on board left for Atlanta after three hours.
A lemon tree thief is the talk of the town in Brisbane. Someone stopped by a woman's front yard at around 4 in the morning, and uprooted an entire tree and drove off with it. The woman who lost the tree is now searching for the culprit, the woman who carried out the strange heist. The CCTV camera installed outside her house captured the entire incident. She posted several videos of the robbery on Instagram detailing what went down outside her house when it was still dark. Ineke McMahon, executive recruiter and career strategist, did not notice the tree was missing in the morning. She was leaving to drop her kid off at school on Friday morning and missed it at the time. After returning from school, Ineke was shocked to see that her lemon tree was missing. She then noticed a trail of dirt leading up the street. The rest was revealed by the CCTV footage. The footage shows a white sedan driving past her home at 4:10 am. The car then turns around and stops near the door of one of Ineke's neighbours. A woman gets down from the vehicle (not visible on the camera), and enters the frame. She pulls on the lemon tree hard, removing it entirely from the ground and dashes away with it in the car. Ineke is heartbroken to have lost the lemon tree. She told Nine News that she had planted it around five months ago. The tree had started to bear fruit. Ineke added she wanted everyone in the neighbourhood to enjoy the fruits of the tree, especially to prepare gin and tonic. However, that dream has now been thwarted by the lemon tree thief.

Lemon tree for gin and tonic

Ineke is trying to hunt down the thief and has posted footage of the incident on social media. The videos don't show the face of the culprit clearly. However, she thinks it is no one from around the neighbourhood and is likely a random person scouting for things to steal. When asked if she plans to replant the lemon tree, Ineke said she doesn't think she would.

Brisbane lemon tree theft has become a viral topic on the internet. The woman had planted it so that everyone in the neighbourhood could enjoy gin and tonic with the lemons. She shared CCTV footage on Instagram with some great music, making it hilarious.

Also Read: Irish scandal: Teen love culminates in old age wedding. Lemon tree caught on camera The videos solved the mystery of what had happened to the lemon tree. Lemon tree for gin and tonic Ineke is trying to hunt down the thief and has posted footage of the incident on social media. The videos don't show the face of the culprit clearly. However, she thinks it is no one from around the neighbourhood and is likely a random person scouting for things to steal. When asked if she plans to replant the lemon tree, Ineke said she doesn't think she would.

A porn actor who killed a couple, decapitated them and packed their body parts in suitcases before dumping them at a popular site in London has been caught on camera dancing naked after committing the crime. Yostin Andres Mosquera, a Colombian national, was convicted on Tuesday of murdering Paul Longworth and his partner, Albert Alfonso, in their apartment last year. The murders became national headlines. Mosquera was involved in a sexual relationship with one of the men. The video shows Mosquera covered in blood, dancing naked and accessing the bank details on their computer. It also clearly shows him battering Longworth with a hammer and taunting Alfonso while repeatedly stabbing him. “Do you like it?” Mosquera says to Alfonso, after killing Longworth with a hammer and hiding his body under bed covers. He dismembered the two men, put their body parts in two suitcases and their heads in a freezer.
Ashley Madison, the global dating platform infamous for getting married people hooked on extramarital affairs, has released the list of top 20 Indian districts with the most number of illicit relationships. The top slot has been claimed by a rather unconventional small town in southern India, leaving behind major metropolitan cities. Kanchipuram, a town in Tamil Nadu, has been crowned the extramarital affair capital of India, according to the June 2025 data. The small town made a big leap last year, jumping from 17th spot to bag the first position. Ashley Madison did not reveal the reason for this massive jump, although the app's reach in tier-2 and tier-3 cities seems to have bolstered their access to extramarital affairs. However, the biggest impression was left by the Delhi-NCR region, which claimed nine spots in the list. Surprisingly, another major metro city doesn't even feature in the top 20.
A woman is inviting hate in Ireland for marrying a man one day before he died of cancer. People are accusing her of being a gold digger, saying she had her eyes on the wealthy landowner's money and property. Now her friends have jumped to her defence, stating that the couple was in love and had known each other since they were teens. Lisa Flaherty, the widow of Joseph Grogan, could inherit a 220-acre farm valued at £4.7 million ($6.3 million or Rs 54 crore). However, at an inquest held last week, it was revealed that nobody from the 75-year-old man's family attended the wedding because they had no idea that the two were in a relationship. Besides, Grogan's death only a day after the wedding has left several questions unanswered, the Grogan family's lawyer said. Following the inquest at Offaly Coroner's Court in Tullamore, he said, that personnel used to investigating "suspicious deaths" should be brought in to understand the circumstances of Mr Grogan's death. The coroner has already rejected calls to refer the death for a detailed forensic investigation. Notably, Grogan was embalmed within hours of his passing. This has made it impossible to determine a definite cause of death. He stepped inside the river to show how strong the current is, which was hampering search efforts for the girl. When he was waist-deep inside the water, he reacted to something in the water. His feet had touched something, and he wasn't sure what it was. Frazao got scared and came out of the river. He wasn't sure what it was, but he knew that something was not right.
Policymakers in New York have proposed contraception to reduce the population of rats and other rodents in the city.

The city government proposed the idea of distributing rat contraceptives after an escaped zoo owl, known as Flaco, died due to rat poison. On Thursday, City Council Member Shaun Abreu, who is the chair of the Committee on Sanitation and Solid Waste Management, presented a city ordinance to launch a pilot programme for handling millions of rats lurking in subway stations and empty lots by using birth control instead of lethal chemicals used in glue traps and rat poison that lead to a slow, brutal death. He said contraceptives are more ethical and humane than other methods.

They plan to use ContraPest, which targets ovarian function in female rats and disrupts sperm cell production in males, The New York Times reported.

The current methods to kill rats include snap and glue traps, rat poisons, and carbon monoxide. While rat poisons make them bleed internally, carbon monoxide suffocates them in their burrows. Some non-professionals have even trained their dogs to hunt rats.

Some lawmakers in Albany have proposed a statewide ban on snap and glue traps. Rashad Edwards, a film and television actor who runs a pest management company in New York City with his wife, opposes the idea of glue traps and says that carbon monoxide is the most efficient way to deal with rats and rodents. While carbon monoxide kills the rats slowly, putting them to sleep and killing them, Edwards avoids rat poison as it is dangerous and torturous to rodents.

"This is not a problem we can kill our way out of," said Jakob Shaw of the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals. "It's time to embrace these more common sense and humane methods."

"It's time to embrace these more common sense and humane methods." In recent years, two California cities have passed bans on glue traps. "It ends an inhumane practice of managing rat populations. There are more effective and humane ways to deal with rats," said Jabari Brisport, the New York state senator."
Astronauts say that they have smelled unusual scents in space. However, that's not surprising due to the difference between the chemistry of Earth and space.

Technically, one cannot smell anything in space as it is an airless vacuum. However, it's not entirely a vacuum, as it has all sorts of molecules, some of which have strong odours, according to Space.com.

Gunpowder, Ozone, Burnt Steak

Some of the most prominent odours that astronauts have reported smelling in space are gunpowder, ozone and burnt steak. According to scientists, there can be two reasons behind it. First, while an astronaut is on a spacewalk, single oxygen atoms can cling to their spacesuit and enter the airlock. It repressurises molecular oxygen, which floods into the airlock and reacts with the single atoms of oxygen to form ozone, explaining the sour, metallic smell.

Secondly, most interstellar carbon has PAHs (Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons) found in charred food like burned toast or barbecued meat. Astronauts could've picked these easily, as there are plenty in the solar system, and brought them inside the space station or the capsule.

Rotten eggs and urine

However, these are not the only strange odours reported in space. Europen Space Agency's Rosetta crossed comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko in 2014, detecting many different molecules in the comet's gaseous halo surrounding its nucleus. These molecules include hydrogen sulphide, which gives rotten eggs their unpleasant stink, and ammonia, whose smell reminds one of urine.

Hydrogen cyanide, an almond-like smelling toxic molecule, sweet-smelling carbon disulphide and pickled aroma of formaldehyde were also present in the halo. Although one would shut their nostrils at this combination of smells, the odour of this comet was weak, as most of the comet's coma was water vapour and carbon dioxide.

Gasoline and booze

An astronaut can't smell Saturn's moon Titan, as it has no oxygen and a minus 176.6 degrees Celsius temperature. However, scientists have found that Titan reeks of gasoline.

NASA discovered that Titan's hazy atmosphere contains a chemical, identified by Cassini spacecraft, consisting of nitrogen, methane and benzene, hailing from a family of molecules called polycyclic aromatic nitrogen heterocycles (PANHs). Thus, the presence of benzene gives Titan its petroleum stench.

Furthermore, Sagittarius B2, a massive interstellar molecular cloud of star-forming gas and dust, located less than 400 light-years from the centre of the Milky Way, contains large amounts of alcohol, including vinyl alcohol, methanol, and ethanol, which is used to make beer.

Astronomers also discovered ethyl formate, a sweet-smelling chemical found in raspberries, in Sagittarius B2 in 2009.

The hair samples of three US presidents, including John F Kennedy, will go into deep space by the end of 2023.

According to the Houston Chronicle, hair samples from presidents John F Kennedy, Dwight D Eisenhower and George Washington will head into deep space in a Vulcan rocket of the United Launch Alliance before the month ends. Celestis, a company specialising in sending cremated remains and DNA samples to outer space, will organise the mission.

Colby Youngblood, the president of Celestis, told the Chronicle, "It is absolutely feasible, from a scientific point, that future researchers can find this flight capsule and study what's in it."

In a statement released in 2023, Celestis said that sending DNA samples of late presidents to space could help people learn more about US history in the future. "Off-world DNA storage allows the human genome to be preserved for thousands of years in space without degradation," the company stated. "This means it is possible it could be discovered later, like a cosmic time capsule. It could allow future generations to learn more about the US forefathers millennia into the future," the statement read further.

Charles M Chafer, the co-founder and CEO of Celestis, said in a statement in 2022, "We're very pleased to be fulfilling, with this mission, a promise I made to Majel Barrett Roddenberry in 1997 that one day we would fly her and husband Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry together on a deep space memorial spaceflight."

The official website of Celestis said the mission will "launch over 150 flight capsules containing cremated remains (ashes), DNA samples, and messages of greetings from clients worldwide on an endless journey in interplanetary space."

The flight, earlier scheduled to leave on the morning of December 24, might get delayed, according to the post on X by the CEO of United Launch Alliance.
