Speaking at the inauguration, Rohit said, "What is going to happen today, I have never dreamed of. As a kid growing up, I wanted to play for Mumbai, for India. No one thinks of this... For me to have my name amongst the greats of the game... I cannot express it in words... This is also special as I am still playing. I have retired from two formats, but I am still playing one format."

World Cup 2023: 'Couldn’t get your breath...', Joe Root says England players struggled with Mumbai poor air

After making water free at all World Cup stadiums, spectators will be served free popcorn and cold drinks at the Wankhede Stadium. The&nbsp;Mumbai Cricket Association took the decision after the&nbsp;South Africa vs Bangladesh match on Tuesday (Oct 24).

MCA President Amol Kale said he proposed&nbsp;the idea which was accepted and that the association will bear all the costs associated with the exercise. The decision could potentially help draw massive crowds at the stadium, especially during the neutral matches.&nbsp;

“I had proposed to provide free one-time popcorn and cold drinks to all fans who turn up to watch World Cup games. It will be for non-hospitality areas. Once their tickets are stamped, free popcorn and coke will be given to each fan," Kale was quoted as saying by The Indian Express.&nbsp;

"The MCA will bear the cost of it. We will be starting this from India vs Sri Lanka game and it will be done till the semis. The MCA Apex members have agreed to the proposal,” he added.

The Wankhede Stadium has three matches left in its kitty for the World Cup. India take on Sri Lanka on November 2 before Afghanistan square up against Australia on November 7. The Maharashtra government on Wednesday approved full-vaccinated spectators at 25 per cent of stadium capacity for the upcoming Indian Premier League matches, which are set to be held in Mumbai and Pune from March 26.

In an official statement issued in the evening here, the state government said considering that the COVID-19 cases have been on the decline, the crowd limit has been capped at 25 per cent and only fully vaccinated spectators will be permitted to enter the stadiums.

This was after the Maharashtra government on Wednesday conducted a meeting with BCCI and Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) for smooth conduct of the IPL, which is now a 10-team affair.

Ministers of the state government -- Aaditya Thackeray and Eknath Shinde -- along with MCA chief Vijay Patil and apex council members Ajinkya Naik and Abhay Hadap, treasurer Jagdish Achrekar, were present at the meeting.

Post the meeting, in a series of tweets, Aaditya Thackeray said, "To ensure the smooth flow of the @IPL, Minister @mieknathshinde Ji and I conducted a joint meeting of IPL, @BCCI with officers of Police and Municipal Corporations of Mumbai, Thane, Navi Mumbai."

He also said that the state's deputy Chief Minister would soon conduct a similar meeting for Pune, the other venue for IPL.

"For Pune, the meeting will be held soon, proposed to be chaired by DCM sir to ensure that the tournament is successfully carried out in all our city venues," said Aaditya, who is the son of Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray.

Earlier, it was learnt that IPL teams will start training in the city from March 14 or 15 onwards and five practice venues have been identified for them.

It is understood that the MCA ground in suburban Bandra Kurla Complex, MCA ground in Thane, the Dr DY Patil University ground and a football pitch along with the CCI (Cricket Club of India) and the Reliance Corporate Park ground in Ghansoli have been identified by the authorities as practice venues for the cash-rich tournament.

Players are likely to start coming into the city from March 8.

It is also understood that all the participants will have to undergo RT-PCR tests 48 hours prior to their arrival in Mumbai.

In case of a three-day quarantine, the participants will get tested every day and if all the three results are negative, they will be permitted to exit quarantine and commence team activities.

It is also understood that all the participants/personnel associated with the conduct of IPL (bubble/non bubble) will undergo RT PCR testing every three to five days during the entire length of the tournament.

While 10 plush hotels have been identified in Mumbai, two hotels have been zeroed in for Pune.

It is also learnt that the teams would be reaching the venues for practice or the match venues through a special "green corridor" and will be allowed to use the Eastern Freeway to go to Navi Mumbai or Thane from south Mumbai.

The civic authorities have also been asked to "beautify" the cities where the games are happening.

The Wankhede Stadium is set to host 10 matches in the cash-rich T20 league from April 10 to 25.

Chennai Super Kings and Delhi Capitals will play the first match at Wankhede on April 10.&nbsp;

Several groundsmen have to travel daily (mostly via trains) to come to the ground. However, the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) is now planning to house the staff at the ground itself till the matches are over.

According to Sportstar, all the 19 ground staff members at the Wankhede Stadium underwent routine RT-PCR tests over the last week. Three had tested positive during tests conducted on March 26. The remaining five more reports from the tests conducted on April 1 returned positive a day later, taking the overall tally to eight.

The cities of Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Chennai, Delhi, Mumbai and Kolkata are set to host IPL 2021 matches with Chennai hosting the season opener between defending champions Mumbai Indians and Royal Challengers Bangalore on April 9. The playoffs and final of IPL 2021 will be played at the world's largest cricket stadium – Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad with the summit clash scheduled on May 30. &nbsp;

Each franchise will play at four venues during the league stage. Out of the 56 league matches, Chennai, Mumbai, Kolkata &amp; Bengaluru will host 10 matches each while Ahmedabad and Delhi will host 8 matches each. All matches will be played at neutral venues and no team will play at their home venue. All teams will play at 4 out of 6 venues during the league stage.

This year's IPL season was put on hold due to the coronavirus pandemic and the BCCI was planning to host the league during the September-October window, however, ICC is yet to announce T20 World Cup's future.&nbsp;

“It’s at a very preliminary stage but if IPL happens in India and by October, the situation is under control in Mumbai, there are four top-class floodlit grounds available in Mumbai. The logistics for BCCI, broadcasters, maintaining a bio-bubble, everything could be managed smoothly,” another BCCI official told PTI.

Mumbai currently is the worst-hit city in India in terms of coronavirus pandemic with over 31,000 cases. “Everything depends on Covid-19 situation in Mumbai. But if there are no spectators allowed and a bio-bubble is created, then Mumbai won’t be a bad option,” the official said.

India defeated West Indies by 67 runs in the third T20I at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai to win the series 2-1. India posted a mammoth score of 240 runs for the loss of three wickets. KL Rahul, Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli all registered half-centuries.

Both teams will next lock horns with each other in the three-match ODI series. The first ODI will be played in Chennai on Sunday, December 15.
