In an ordinary field in North Essex, England, a metal detectorist has made an exciting historical discovery dating back to the Middle Ages.

The detectorist found a gold medieval ring engraved with a beautiful declaration of love and a silver hooked tag. The finds, as per BBC, are subject to a coroner's inquest at Chelmsford.

Engraved love

The gold medieval ring with a love declaration in French was found near Frinton. On another occasion, the same detectorist landed upon a silver hooked tag in the field.

"Je desir vous Ceruir," reads the ring. This French term is a declaration of love and translates to "I desire to serve you". The language is a type of French used in England during the Middle Ages.

They also believe it belonged to someone with an elite status, and a connection to the French.

'I desire to serve you'

The ring, though pretty small, belonged to a man, speculates Lori Rogerson, the Essex County Finds Liaison Officer for the Colchester and Ipswich Museum Service.

'I desire to serve you': Extraordinary declaration of love recovered from an ordinary field in England

Pat Cummins-led Australia got off the mark in the ODI World Cup 2023 edition on Monday (Oct 16) with a thumping five-wicket win over Sri Lanka in match 14, in Lucknow. Asked to bowl first, Australia rode on Adam Zampa's four-fer and two wickets apiece from captain Cummins and Mitchell Starc to dismiss the Lankans for a paltry 209 in 43.3 overs before chasing the total in 35.3 overs courtesy of fifties from Mitchell Marsh and Josh Inglis.

During Australia's run-chase, they were in trouble with a poor start. From 24 for no loss, they were soon reduced to 24 for 2 in four overs, with Dilshan Madushanka striking twice in a double-wicket maiden over. However, Warner's dismissal made heads turn.

It was a back-of-a-length delivery that angled in towards leg and hit Warner on the knee roll as he tried to flick it on the onside. Initially, it seemed as if the ball was going down the leg which prompted the veteran to challenge umpire Joel Wilson's decision. Nonetheless, replays showed that the ball was just hitting the leg stump and, thus, Warner had to make the long walk back to the pavilion due to the umpire's call. This wasn't well received by Warner and he hit his pads and was seen swearing at the umpire while going back.

After losing the toss, Rohit Sharma-led India have been asked to bowl first by Afghanistan in match 9 of CWC 2023 edition on Wednesday (Oct 11). Afghanistan were off to a decent start before they were soon reduced to 63 for 3. Talking about the Afghan openers, Ibrahim Zadran departed for 22 whereas Rahmanullah Gurbaz (21) was looking good before Shardul Thakur held on to a stunning catch to send him packing.

Talking about Gurbaz's dismissal, it was a well-executed short-pitched delivery from birthday boy Hardik Pandya. The batter went for the shot and seemed to have timed it well. Shardul, stationed at deep fine leg, caught the ball, was about to touch the boundary rope and, hence, threw the ball in the air, regained balance and completed the catch without breaking a sweat.

Ind vs Afg, CWC '23: Shardul Thakur takes a STUNNER to send Rahmanullah Gurbaz packing - Watch

How will the world end? A flood that drowns everyone? A fiery meteor that herds us to the same end that met the mighty dinosaurs? Or an air-born virus that destroys us from the inside?

Turns out, our end may lie in a solar storm. Scientists have found proof of a gargantuan storm that struck our Earth some 14,300 years ago, and which they say if happens today "could be catastrophic for society."

Largest-ever solar storm

Remains of a tree along the Drouzet River in the French Alps revealed fascinating evidence.

Annual growth rings of the stump of the Scots pine tree revealed radiocarbons, an isotope released by the sun during solar storms.

In fact, as per estimates, this solar storm from more than 14,000 years ago was probably 10 times the late 1800s storm that caused telegraph systems to go haywire.

As per scientists, if such a solar storm struck Earth today, the effects would be "catastrophic."

One thing you should know about such storms is that they tend to knock out electronics, and as per Edouard Bard, a professor of climate and ocean evolution at the Collège de France and the research centre CEREGE, "if similar solar storms happened today, they could be catastrophic for society, as we are so reliant upon technology."

Humanity's next big 'catastrophe' could lie in the Sun, predict scientists

America's Emergency Alert System test has been a topic of conversation for weeks now. Leading up to the test run, the US government prepped the public to not be shocked when the test goes off at 2:20 pm on October 4. Yet, it did manage to surprise people since it went off at 2:18 pm, two minutes before schedule.

Intern to blame?

It isn't known whether the early blaring of the FEMA Emergency Alert System was an accident or if it was sounded two minutes early on purpose.

People have been quick to report the goof-up on social media, with many chalking it up to a mistake by some poor intern. This has triggered a cascade of some pretty hilarious memes.

Trump to visit New York for trial, says will fight 'corrupt and racist Attorney General Letitia James'

Picture this: it's New Year's Eve, a night of celebration, and fireworks. You're waiting for your boyfriend, and you receive a message saying he's been kidnapped. What would you do? Call the police, of course.

However, in the end this turned out to be a ploy by the Aussie Romeo to spend time with his mistress, and now the Casanova has to pay for sending police on a wild goose chase.

Big plans

On New Year's Eve 2022, Paul Iera had big plans for the night, and they didn't involve watching fireworks with his partner.

Instead, this Aussie Casanova had a date with his mistress, and he was willing to go to great lengths to make it happen. To escape spending time with his girlfriend, Iera came up with an ingenious plan of faking his own kidnapping.

A plausible excuse, right? But even the best-laid plans can go awry, especially when your partner starts asking questions. In a desperate bid to buy time, Paul and his mistress concocted a text message that would set off a chain of events that would rival any Hollywood thriller.

Will being in a relationship turn me into Tom Cruise?

Well, no. Being in a relationship will not turn you into Tom Cruise (or the hottest man you can think of), but it is an undeniable fact that women do tend to "help" or push their partners into dressing better.

As per LADbible, many TikTokers have expressed concern that the trend is potentially depersonalising men's wardrobe. What it means is that caught up in a relationship, men may be potentially losing what makes them... them.

One user @velveteenrabbit, in a now viral video, explained that women unintentionally risked "overhauling their boyfriends and completely redesigning them".

From sloppy to stylish: TikTok's 'girlfriend effect' show women really make men look hotter

A now-viral video has exposed a startling incident from Houston, Texas, where a drive-thru employee fired at a customer for complaining about missing curly fries.

The incident happened way back in March 2021, at a Jack-in-the-box outlet. However, it has made the headlines now as the customers file a lawsuit against the fast-food chain after their attorney obtained the video through a discovery request. The lawsuit, as per ABC7 Chicago, seeks damages of at least $250,000.

Scary combo: Fries and gunshots

As per the lawsuit, Anthony Ramos, a Florida resident, was working in Houston when he went on an outing with his pregnant wife and their 6-year-old daughter.

The family went to the Jack-in-the-Box near Houston's Bush Intercontinental Airport, where they ordered a combo meal.

However, what should have been a routine fast-food run took a dramatic turn when, after a 15-minute wait, the Ramos family found themselves speeding away from the drive-thru under gunfire.

The lawsuit states they paid $12.99 for a combo meal but did not receive the curly fries they had ordered, sparking a heated argument.

The Ramos family initiated the lawsuit in 2022. Initially, Ford was charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. She ultimately pleaded guilty to a lesser charge of deadly conduct and received a sentence of one year deferred adjudication, which she successfully completed in June, according to court records.

Florida is notorious for the weirdest news stories, particularly those involving animals. In the latest one, a woman from the US state "borrowed" an alligator from her previous work place. She was apparently planning on having a photoshoot with the reptile.

How does someone 'borrow' an alligator?

The woman, who has been identified as Madison Stephan, actually abducted the alligator from Croc Encounters, a reptile park and alligator farm, based in Tampa, Florida.

Using a key she still had in her possession, the woman sneaked into the park before the hours and "borrowed" the alligator without permission.

Stephan then kept the juvenile alligator in a bath tub at the Grove Resort and Water Park in Winter Garden, the venue of her birthday celebrations.

As per The Palm Beach Post, the events have been confirmed by the Florida woman's friend, who told authorities that they both drove to Croc Encounters together where Stephan "had a surprise for her."

Leaving her friend in the car, Stephan walked inside the facility and returned with the alligator. Following this, the two women drove to the hotel for a five-day holiday.

Vacations can be exciting and stressful at the same time. The experience of having some time off from work, to just relax and enjoy yourself is made stressful by the arrangements — the stay, the food and what you'll wear in particular.

Anywhere you're travelling to hotels, bed and breakfasts, motels take care of the first two things, but the third thing for many of us remains a bother. To make it easier and also help the planet, Japan Airlines has introduced a year-long pilot of a service that provides its passengers the ease of booking a selection of clothes. Here's how it works.

No stress to shop or pack

For passengers travelling by Japan's flagship carrier, their vacations can now include the option to rent a selection of clothes. As per a BBC report, they can choose various options, including clothing type, season, style, and pickup and return dates.

Also read | Talk about keen ear! Dogs can listen to hooman chatter even when snoozing, finds study

Users will receive their selected clothes at their hotel upon arrival. This service will only cost them about $34 to $48 for the rental period.

The service, called 'Any Wear, Anywhere,' started in July of this year and will run till August 2024.

Miho Moriya, who works for Sumitomo, the Japanese company handling reservations, deliveries, and laundering, came up with the idea. She says that what inspired her to come with this was her own dread about luggage.

"I love travelling and I've been to many foreign countries, but I've always dreaded dragging around luggage or doing laundry abroad," she said.

Moriya says it took "many tries" to find an airline that would support her idea, and once it got approved, the implementation was pushed back due to the pandemic. Over time, she hopes to expand this service to other airlines within the OneWorld Alliance and eventually worldwide, contributing to sustainable travel practices.

How would it help the planet?

To begin with, it should help cut down on holiday shopping. Many people tend to shop, especially for their vacations. These clothes often end up sitting in their wardrobes once the holiday is over.

Clothes under the Any wear, Anywhere service are either pre-owned or sourced from company overstock. Furthermore, they will be cleaned and reused, which helps make the service sustainable.

Additionally, with travellers leaving their luggage at home, the aircraft will be lighter and thus help save on fuel and emissions.

This initiative aims to reduce carbon emissions by lowering the weight carried on JAL's aeroplanes. It is estimated that saving about 22 pounds (10 kg) in luggage equates to approximately 16.5 pounds (7.5 kg) saved in emissions.

As per CNN, reducing weight is a proven way to save fuel and carbon emissions. Previously, Qantas airlines redesigned its tableware for first and business class to be about 11 per cent lighter. This move, as per the company, helped it start saving 1.1 million pounds (535 metric tonnes) of fuel per year.

Japan Airlines is asking passengers to travel without clothes. Here's why

On Tuesday (September 05), Novak Djokovic emerged on top of Taylor Fritz in the quarter-finals of the US Open 2023. The Serbian went past the American with a scoreline of 6-1, 6-4, 6-4 and the win marked a significant milestone for the former world number one Djokovic. The win has propelled the 36-year-old to his 47th Grand Slam semi-final, surpassing the record previously held by Swiss maestro Roger Federer.

However, there was a moment in the match when Djokovic lost his cool on a spectator. During a live volley with Fritz, a spectator yelled 'Out!' which disrupted the Serbian's concentration, leading him to concede the point. Thus, this was not well received by Djokovic and the veteran made his displeasure known as he requested the fan to be escorted out of the Arthur Ashe Stadium.

Here's the video of the entire incident from the quarter-final face-off between Djokovic and Fritz: A fan just yelled “Out!” while Novak Djokovic & Taylor Fritz were playing a point. Fans that do this should be kicked out immediately & don’t deserve a 2nd chance. Tennis: Djokovic loses cool after a spectator yells 'out' during Taylor Fritz face-off in US Open - Watch

Late last week, a devastating incident sent shockwaves through the community of Worcester, Massachusetts when a 14-year-old boy named Harris Wolobah tragically lost his life after participating in a viral social media trend known as the 'One Chip Challenge.'

Harris, a sophomore at Doherty Memorial High School, consumed an extremely spicy Paqui chip, which ultimately led to his demise, reported the Mirror.

The 'One Chip Challenge' explained

The 'One Chip Challenge' emerged in 2016 but has recently seen a resurgence in popularity among youngsters.

This challenge was initially devised as a marketing campaign by Paqui, a chip company.

Participants purchase a chip flavoured with the Carolina Reaper pepper, renowned as one of the world's hottest peppers, and film themselves attempting to endure the intense spiciness without consuming any relief, such as water or other food.

Poison Control maintains a web page dedicated to this challenge, warning that capsaicin consumption can cause severe mouth and throat discomfort and even lead to more serious health complications, including heart attacks and esophageal damage.

The Scoville heat units (SHU) scale measures the pungency of capsaicin-containing foods, with the Carolina Reaper pepper reaching up to 2.2 million SHU. This information underscores the chip's intensity and potential risks.

Paqui, in response to Harris's tragedy, emphasised on its website that the chip should only be consumed by adults and advises thorough hand-washing after handling it to prevent contact with sensitive areas like the eyes.

Harris Wolobah was described as a rising star in both his school and his basketball team. Worcester Schools Superintendent Rachel Monarrez expressed her condolences, acknowledging the tremendous loss to his family, friends, and teachers.
India opened their campaign in Asia Cup 2023 versus arch-rivals Pakistan, in Kandy, on September 02 (Saturday). As the rain had the final say and the high-voltage clash ended in no result, Rohit Sharma-led Men in Blue have now moved on to their next game and have locked horns with Nepal for the first time ever in international cricket in their final group stage game on Monday (September 04).

Winning the toss, Rohit & Co. opted to bowl first in another rain-predicted contest in Kandy. Virat Kohli, Ishan Kishan and Shreyas Iyer dropped easy chances as Nepal openers were off to a solid start.

Talking about Kohli's dropped catch, the former Indian captain made a mess of a regulation chance at cover point. It was an uppish drive from Aasif Sheikh as Kohli failed to grab the catch. Here's the video:

The Guinness Book of World Records is full of so many unique records. Now, an American woman has won the Guinness World Record for having the longest female mullet.

Pakistan have posted a mammoth 342 for 6 after opting to bat first versus Nepal in the opening game of the Asia Cup in Multan, Pakistan on Wednesday (August 30). The No. 1 ranked ODI side were challenged with Nepal striking early before Babar Azam (151) and Mohammed Rizwan got together, for the fourth wicket, whereas the skipper carried on from his end and was well supported by another centurion Iftikhar Ahmed (unbeaten on 109). However, it was Rizwan's mode of dismissal which remained a hot topic of debate.

It was the 23rd over of the Pakistani innings when Rizwan got run-out for a 50-ball 44. The right-hander hit a four off Nepal Lamichhane's previous delivery and went for a quick single, on the off-side, in the following ball. Nepal fielder, Dipendra Singh Airee swiftly collected the ball, stationed at covers, and a direct hit costed Rizwan's fall. What made heads turn was that Rizwan fumbled and he did not ground his bat whereas the veteran chose to jump, in a bid to avoid being hit by the throw. Since then, he has been trolled on social media platform X, formerly Twitter. Here are some of the reactions:

Asia Cup: Wait, what? Md Rizwan's BRAINFADE moment makes heads turn during Pakistan-Nepal opener

In a rather unconventional approach to combat drink-driving, Japanese police are now encouraging individuals to consume alcohol.

After consuming alcohol, drivers are made to navigate a driving course and see for themselves how well they can handle driving.

The inspiration behind this campaign

CNN reports that this initiative was devised by the Chikushino Police Department in Fukuoka, southwest Japan, as part of its awareness campaign against drink-driving.

The campaign was launched after a tragic incident in August 2006, where a drunk driver claimed the lives of three children on a local bridge. This latest edition of the campaign took place at the Chikushino Automobile School in Chikushino City on August 22 and had 10 participants, including a 77-year-old.

How it went

Drivers were first evaluated on their reflexes and driving skills while sober. They were then provided enough alcohol to exceed the legal limit and given a driving course to complete.

Talking to CNN, a police spokesperson revealed that each participant had a driving instructor with them throughout the exercise, even riding with them in their respective vehicles.

Conducted within the confines of the driving school premises, the "hands-on event" allowed "drivers to experience for themselves the difference between driving before and after drinking and to get a sense of how dangerous drink-driving can be," said the spokesperson.

The results

Many participants, as per the spokesperson, acknowledged that the experience highlighted how they had been "overconfident" about their ability to drive under the influence of alcohol. They also realised that they made more errors than they thought they would. A few participants also noticed that their ability to control the vehicle was affected.

Acknowledging growing concerns over the exploitation of young 'influencers' on social media platforms, Illinois has enacted the United States's first law to safeguard minors featured in online videos. The law will also ensure that these young influencers are properly compensated.

The legislation, as per a CNN report, was inspired by the advocacy of 16-year-old Shreya Nallamothu from Normal, Illinois.

How it all started

The teenager's concern reportedly began when scrolling through social media during the pandemic. She noticed an increasing number of children featured in family vlogs. These videos made her "realise family vlogging is putting very private and intimate moments on the internet."

This prompted her to write a letter to Democrat Dave Koehler, her state senator, urging him to consider protective legislation for these children.

"The fact that these kids are either too young to grasp that or weren’t given the chance to grasp that is really sad," says Nallamothu.

The law

Influenced by her letter, last week, Illinois Governor J. B. Pritzker signed into law an amendment to the state's Child Labor Law.

Among other things, the new law allows teenagers over the age of 18 to sue their parents if they were featured in monetised social media videos and not adequately compensated. These rights mirror the rights held by child actors.

The new law draws inspiration from the 1936 "Jackie Coogan's Law," which was designed to prevent parents from exploiting child actors' earnings.

Starting July 1, 2024, parents in Illinois will be obligated to allocate 50 per cent of earnings from a video's content into a blocked trust fund for the child 'influencer'.

The exact amount, however, will depend on the duration for which the child is featured in the video. For instance, if a child appears in 50 per cent of a video, they'll be liable to receive 25 per cent of the earnings. Similarly, for a video they're in 100 per cent, they will get 50 per cent of the earnings.

However, this rule applies only when a child appears on screen for more than 30 per cent of the vlogs shared in a one-year period.

Talking to CNN, Senator Koehler said that they "understand that parents should receive compensation too because they have equity in this, but we don't want to forget about the child."

Why is such a law necessary?

Recently, there has been a rising trend of YouTube parent vloggers and social media influencers posting frequent videos sharing personal details about their lives.

Children often play a significant role in these monetised videos, yet there is no legal requirement for parents to share the video earnings with the children.

Similarly, kid influencer accounts that often earn as much as $20,000 for sponsored posts rarely benefit the children. These accounts are managed by parents due to age restrictions on social media platforms.

"We know with the explosion of social media that parents are using it to monetise kids being on videos. If money is being made and nothing is set up for the children, it's the same thing as a child actor," said Koehler.

Experts say that this legislation "is a long time coming." Jessica Maddox, an assistant professor studying social media influencer communities, expressed hope that other US states will follow Illinois' example.

She said, "Social media labour and careers are becoming increasingly common and viable forms of income, and it’s important that the law catches up with technology to ensure minors aren’t being exploited."

First-of-its-kind law in Illinois allows children to sue parents for making money off of online content

An elderly couple, flying from London's Stansted Airport to Bergerac, France, on Friday (August 12), found themselves charged a staggering £110 (approximately $140) by Ryanair for the seemingly routine task of printing their outbound flight boarding passes.

The incident has garnered attention and concern, shedding light on the complexities older passengers face in navigating the intricacies of budget airlines.

Mistaken check-in

As recounted by the couple to The Telegraph, their predicament arose from a simple mistake. The couple, aged 80 and 79, unintentionally checked in for their return flight instead of the outbound one. They realised their error upon reaching the airport.

They explained that the airline's website was confusing, with various prompts for additional services, contributing to the error. "The website was very confusing, they're trying to get you to add on this and that. I didn't realize I was checking in for the coming-home flight," the couple told the Telegraph.

Airport check-in dilemma

Faced with the absence of their boarding passes, the couple was compelled to resort to airport check-in. The process came with an exorbitant cost. "At the airport, I tried to get the boarding card, and it said 'check-in is closed' and I needed to go to the desk," the couple recounted.

"They said that's £55 per person. I thought it was absolutely disgusting, but I had no option so paid up. It was very stressful," they added.

Ryanair's position

A Ryanair representative defended the charges, citing the airline's terms and conditions.

The couple was deemed to have "failed to check-in online before arriving at Stansted airport (11 Aug) despite receiving an email reminder (10 Aug) to check-in online."

Mistaken check-in As recounted by the couple to The Telegraph, their predicament arose from a simple mistake. Airport check-in dilemma Faced with the absence of their boarding passes, the couple was compelled to resort to airport check-in. In the city that never sleeps, a chef who started cooking insects four years back for an art project now wants to change people's perspective about insects and make them a "nutrient-dense" and "delicious" part of everyone's diet.
