As Artificial Intelligence becomes a topic of conversation, online and offline, Pope Francis on Tuesday called on the international community to reflect on the potential dangers of artificial intelligence (AI) and said that the technology must be used in the "service of humanity".

Pope points out 'disruptive possibilities' of Artificial Intelligence, calls for responsible use of technology

America is in the grip of a new trend of sorts, where a rising number of people are now living alone. Census data shows that in the nation, there are nearly 38 million adults who are living by themselves, and nearly half of these are older Americans.

Experts predict that the numbers are set to rise in coming years. Here's all you need to know about this trend and a phenomenon called grey divorces that is fuelling it.

Old and alone?

As per census data, nearly 16 million people aged 65 and older were living solo in 2022. This is three times the number of older Americans living alone in the 1960s.

CBS News reports that there are many reasons behind this shift in the society — including the economic gains made by women after entering the workforce and the changing attitudes towards marriage.

Also read | Explainer | Why is toxic fan behaviour becoming the new norm at concerts?

While researching on single households, researchers stumbled upon something called 'grey divorces'.

What are grey divorces?

The term 'grey divorce' was popularised about a decade ago by Susan L. Brown, co-director of the National Center for Family & Marriage Research at Bowling Green State University. It refers to the divorce of people over the age of 50, sometimes after decades of marriage.

"Well over a third of people who are getting divorced now are over the age of 50," says Brown.

"We just can't ignore that group anymore."

Researchers found that between 1990 and 2010, in the US, divorce rates for people over the ages of 50 have doubled. The rise has continued over the years and is still going strong.

Some recent example of grey divorces that made the headlines are Bill and Melinda Gates, and more recently Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and his wife Sophie Grégoire Trudeau, who just this week announced separation after 27 years of marriage.

Divorce trends

Grey divorces are on a rise, both among celebrities and the general public, reports CBS. As per Brown, while divorce rates overall are declining, "older adults are really bucking the trend," this is especially true for those over 65 years of age.

"This means more and more people are going to be ageing, probably, alone, and outside of marriage, certainly," she says.

Susan Myres, a family law specialist based in Houston, says that while it may sound illogical to end a marriage this late in life, there are actually plenty of reasons behind this.

"I had one client tell me, 'I do not want to die next to that man – I'm out'," she recalls.

This as per her happens when couples sometimes drift too far apart. In other cases, this is due to abuse or even shocking transgressions. Many older adults, especially those in their 80s, feel whatever time they have left is too precious to spend with the wrong person.

How pandemic helped rock the boat

Myers says that the pandemic has also contributed to this awakening.

As the world battled the Covid pandemic, more and more people realised the difference in opinions, perspective them and their partners may have when in comes to a number of things, like masks, vaccine, etc.

A CNN report from January 2022 showed that this difference of opinion also stretched to the vaccination of children.

Life as a single, older adult

As per the report, grey divorces also come with some financial troubles for the couple. Traditionally, couples tend to create a "nest egg" together. This means they save money for their old age, together.

Divorce cuts this in half, and some have reported a significant drop in their standard of living after a divorce later in life.

That being said, the rising trend of people living together isn't merely fuelled by 'grey divorce'. Many older people living on their own as per the researchers were widowed and a growing share reported never being married.

"There are many more of us than people realise who don't see living single or living alone as some sort of burden, but instead embrace it as something that we really just love," says researcher and psychologist Bella DePaulo.

Trend set to intensify

Currently, around 28 per cent of people over the ages of 65 are living alone in the US. This number has, for the most part, stayed consistent in recent years.

However, as per CBS News, this number is climbing, as the Baby Boomer generation — most of them aged 59 to 77 — gets older.

Sociologist Markus Schafer of Baylor University says this trend is a "two-sided phenomenon." On one hand, people are enjoying a greater autonomy, on the other, they are 'lonely'.

Many studies have pointed to the fact that loneliness and social isolation come with significant health consequences. Most recently, in April, a study by the Norwegian Institute of Public Health (NIPH/FHI) revealed that the end of a marriage could bring an individual serious cognitive health problems. Researches analysed the marital status of people aged 44 to 68 years over a 24-year period and found that a person's marital status affects their chances of clinical diagnosis of dementia or mild cognitive impairment after the age of 70.

Life as a single, older adult As per the report, grey divorces also come with some financial troubles for the couple. Trend set to intensify Currently, around 28 per cent of people over the ages of 65 are living alone in the US. Excruciating wasp sting leaves Tarantula paralysed for more than a month; video leaves viewers astonished

You must've seen videos of certain types of whales that hunt by merely swimming with their mouths open. Their prey just seems to swim right into their cavernous mouths and into their bellies. This behaviour is called filter-feeding. Using this, species like blue whales and baleen whales sift immense quantities of tiny prey from the ocean.

While fascinating, whales are far from the first species to use this hunting method. Fossils unearthed in China's Hubei Province show that a curious marine reptile that roamed the waters around 250 million years ago had hunting habits similar to the modern gentle giants of the sea — whales.

Blast from the past

Scientists estimate that the ancient reptile species existed in the Triassic Period, around 248 million years ago. They suggest that the marine reptile species called Hupehsuchus nanchangensis was lost to us during Earth's worst mass extinction.

While the reptile had a feeding style similar to the modern whale, Hupehsuchus was far more modest, at only about three feet (one metre) long.

Fossils indicate that the reptile had a long, narrow snout, a toothless mouth. It used its front and back limbs as paddles for steering, and its broad tail for forward propulsion.

Hupehsuchus nanchangensis' snout was made up of long, loose bones, with the lower jaw connected to the rest of the skull loosely. This, as per the scientists, allowed it to open its mouth wide to take in large amounts of water that contained small prey like zooplanktons.

How similar were these reptiles to whales?

Not very, there's a very obvious, enormous size difference. Furthermore, while the feeding method is similar, scientists speculate that there might be key differences.

Scientists unearth 248 million-years-old marine reptile that shared this curious similarity to whales

Nature is brutal. A gruesome, rare video captured recently is now going viral on the Internet. In it, a killer whale can be seen "slurping" the liver out of a live shark.

Gruesome scene

The gruesome video on YouTube shows the moment an orca tears into the stomach of a massive 30-foot (nine metres) long whale shark before removing its liver.

In the video, other nearby orcas can be heard clicking excitedly in a frenzy as their fellow killer whale swims away from the now dead shark that sinks lifelessly to the depths of the ocean.

A matter of seconds

Talking to Live Science, James Moskito, CEO of the California-based ocean tour operator Ocean Safaris, who captured the video during an expedition to the Gulf of California, said: "The killer whales start coming in and next I know they're biting the bottom of it (the victim shark)".

"It's literally over in a matter of seconds," remarks Moskito, adding, "They came in, they bit the bottom of the whale shark. Looks like they slurped in the liver and then the whale shark just fell and descended down, with no movement — I'm assuming it was dead."

The world's oldest man, Jose Paulino Gomes, has died just one week shy of his 128th birthday. A resident of Brazil, Gomes as per local media reports, died just seven days before his birthday at his home in Corrego del Cafe in Pedra Bonita, Minas Gerais state, on Friday. Three pandemics, discovery of X-ray and more As per Mirror UK, the centenarian must have lived through not just one, but three pandemics, the two world wars and was born even before the death of British Queen Victoria. His birth certificate for the year 1917 shows that he was born on 4th August 1895, which means he was born before the first-ever high school proms (1920s) and the discovery of X-rays (November 1985).
The seal, as per a report in The Guardian, was used to authenticate "indulgences" or written pardons for a person's sinful behaviour.

Centuries old seal

As per the report, the seal which was found by a metal detectorist just two miles from Mottisfont, an Augustinian priory and site of pilgrimage near Romsey, Hampshire, dates back to the 15th-16th century.

Estimates suggest that it dates between 1470 and 1520. It reportedly spent some 500 years buried in the field before it was discovered.

Capturing the extraordinary encounter on video, Gustin shared it on Facebook, which quickly went viral, drawing widespread attention to the beautiful mammal that graced the region's waters.

An unprecedented experience

Having witnessed numerous dolphin sightings in the area, Gustin admitted that this particular encounter took him completely by surprise.

Even comparing it to his most remarkable wildlife experiences, such as observing a bobcat swimming across a bayou in Texas, he emphasised that nothing compared to the beauty of the pink dolphins.

A rare occurrence

Gustin expressed his astonishment at the rarity of such sightings, stating that despite his frequent visits to Louisiana, he had never come across anything like this before. The uniqueness of the encounter left a lasting impression on him, describing it as an unforgettable experience.

The mystery of the pink dolphins

While the pink river dolphin species inhabits freshwater river basins in South America, it is unlikely to be the species encountered by Gustin in Louisiana's waters. The most probable candidates are bottlenose dolphins, which are typically seen with grey coloration, common in the Gulf of Mexico. Dolphins displaying pink or white colouring are considered rare and are often attributed to albinism, according to the Blue World Institute.

The enigma of 'Pinky'

Speculations arise that the pink dolphin Gustin encountered might be none other than 'Pinky,' a renowned dolphin known to inhabit southern Louisiana.

First sighted in 2007 in the Calcasieu River, Pinky shares characteristics consistent with an albino dolphin, including reddish eyes and visible blood vessels due to the lack of pigment. The uniqueness of the encounter left a lasting impression on him, describing it as an unforgettable experience. The mystery of the pink dolphins While the pink river dolphin species inhabits freshwater river basins in South America, it is unlikely to be the species encountered by Gustin in Louisiana's waters. The most probable candidates are bottlenose dolphins, which are typically seen with grey coloration, common in the Gulf of Mexico. Dolphins displaying pink or white colouring are considered rare and are often attributed to albinism, according to the Blue World Institute. Loyal dog in Puducherry town mirrors Hachiko's devotion after owner's suspected suicide

Age may be "just" a number for the world, but in China, for those over 35, it can become the basis for "discrimination" and rejection from jobs and even hostels.

Recently, taking to Xiaohongshu, a social media platform that has been described as "China's answer to Instagram" a consumer complained about hostels rejecting bookings from those in their late 30s. This has sparked a debate on China's "35-year-old crisis", with some labelling this discrimination towards a particular age demographic. However, others are of the opinion that this is justified. Here's all you need to know.

A dearth of hostels

In a now-viral post, a user complained that many youth hostels in the Chinese capital Beijing are refusing accommodation to customers over 35 years of age. The user alleged that he faced quite a struggle looking for hostels without such restrictions.

Apparently, he was informed of the age restriction over the phone and hostel owners defended this constraint, citing safety concerns.

Also read | An NYU professor thinks Donald Trump will quit presidential race. Here's why

He claims that the hostel owner told him that "it is unsafe for older people to get in and out of bed and is prone to accidents."

In frustration, the user asked netizens, "I am getting close (to 35 years old) but I can still do 50 pushups, run five kilometres, and jump over a two-meter wall. What's the danger?"

Safety, peace and more

Sixth Tone, which does extensive coverage of all things China, reports that a search across major online travel-based platforms reveals that many youth hostels in Beijing now impose an age restriction.

Reportedly, many of them have set the age requirement between 18 and 40 years. Additionally, some have raised this restriction and cater to people till the ages of 45 to 50, but many have drawn the line at 35 years.

And it's not just the capital Beijing. Similar restrictions are in place in other major Chinese cities, including Shanghai, Hangzhou, Suzhou, and Guangzhou.

Also read | Court sets free UK woman jailed for illegally obtaining abortion pills, terms it 'sad' case

Responding to a booking request by Sixth Tone posing as a middle-aged guest, one Beijing hotel said that the reason for their 35-year age restriction is precautionary. They claimed that they were trying to avoid conflicts between their young guests and the "old" ones and that the schedules, and living habits of the two broad age groups are different.

Another hostel, which has set the age restriction lower at 30 years, said this was done as a safety measure.

"We only offer bunk beds and don’t host elderly guests in general since we are a youth hostel," said a member of the staff, revealing that in the past, a 50-year-old guest had to be rushed to the hospital for treatment after falling off a bunk bed.

Discrimination or not

On Weibo, the Chinese alternative to Twitter, the age limit has led to a discussion of sorts. While many mocked the practice, calling it discrimination, others say that the practice was normal since most hostels cater to the younger demographic.

One user commented, "Such opportunities should be left for youngsters to experience life."

However, another user was quick to point out that, "After being excluded from applying for jobs at public and private companies, now people above 35 have been abandoned by hostels too."

Talking to local news publication Baidu, the user behind the viral social media post which helped shine the limelight on this issue, says that staying in a youth hostel is not only cheaper but also helps you make friends with people with similar interests.

Fu Jian, a lawyer at Henan-based Zejin Law Firm, says that age restrictions are not illegal, but that "operators should inform customers of such conditions in advance to prevent unnecessary disputes."

China's '35-year-old' crisis

In China, there is apparently a long-standing bias towards those over 35 years of age. As per Sixth Tone, in the nation, this particular demographic faces an increasingly long list of life pressures, this predicament has now come to be known as the "35-year-old" crisis.

Those over 35 years shoulder familial burdens while battling a bleak job market. Reportedly, in China, more and more public and private companies are now setting 35 years as the maximum age for new hires. So, for the older youth, the competition is so much tougher.

A 2022 survey conducted by the All-China Federation of Trade Unions revealed that among individuals aged between 35 and 39, 54 per cent were worried about losing their job — the highest percentage among all age groups surveyed. Age may be "just" a number for the world, but in China, for those over 35, it can become the basis for "discrimination" and rejection from jobs and even hostels.

A dearth of hostels In a now-viral post, a user complained that many youth hostels in the Chinese capital Beijing are refusing accommodation to customers over 35 years of age. The user alleged that he faced quite a struggle looking for hostels without such restrictions. Apparently, he was informed of the age restriction over the phone and hostel owners defended this constraint, citing safety concerns. Also read | An NYU professor thinks Donald Trump will quit presidential race. Here's why He claims that the hostel owner told him that "it is unsafe for older people to get in and out of bed and is prone to accidents." In frustration, the user asked netizens, "I am getting close (to 35 years old) but I can still do 50 pushups, run five kilometres, and jump over a two-meter wall. What's the danger?" Safety, peace and more Sixth Tone, which does extensive coverage of all things China, reports that a search across major online travel-based platforms reveals that many youth hostels in Beijing now impose an age restriction. Also read | Court sets free UK woman jailed for illegally obtaining abortion pills, terms it 'sad' case Responding to a booking request by Sixth Tone posing as a middle-aged guest, one Beijing hotel said that the reason for their 35-year age restriction is precautionary. Discrimination or not On Weibo, the Chinese alternative to Twitter, the age limit has led to a discussion of sorts. While many mocked the practice, calling it discrimination, others say that the practice was normal since most hostels cater to the younger demographic. One user commented, "Such opportunities should be left for youngsters to experience life." However, another user was quick to point out that, "After being excluded from applying for jobs at public and private companies, now people above 35 have been abandoned by hostels too." Talking to local news publication Baidu, the user behind the viral social media post which helped shine the limelight on this issue, says that staying in a youth hostel is not only cheaper but also helps you make friends with people with similar interests. Fu Jian, a lawyer at Henan-based Zejin Law Firm, says that age restrictions are not illegal, but that "operators should inform customers of such conditions in advance to prevent unnecessary disputes." China's '35-year-old' crisis In China, there is apparently a long-standing bias towards those over 35 years of age. Additionally, 71 per cent of respondents in this age group expressed concerns about their job skills becoming outdated.
A video showing a group of youngsters doing sit-ups as punishment has gone viral on social media. Media reports suggest that these trekkers were visiting the famous Dudhsagar waterfalls on the border of the Indian state of Goa and the punishment was meted out to them by officials of Railway Police. Their crime? Getting off the train before the scheduled station and crossing railway tracks on foot, something that is punishable according to the rules of the railways. But the punishment surely doesn't involve sit-ups. The video apparently shows the officials not wanting to inflict heavy punishment on the young travellers but wanting to make them realise that they have done something wrong.

Kale, an endangered Kemp's Ridley sea turtle, recently underwent a CT scan at an Alabama hospital in the US as part of his ongoing medical treatment.

As per Miami Herald report, Kale's journey has been challenging. In 2019, the endangered turtle was accidentally hooked by a recreational fisherman off the coast of Virginia.
Due to complications during the healing process, Kale developed scar tissue and a fistula, a hollow space prone to infections. Consequently, he requires regular veterinarian visits and treatment.

A video has been doing the rounds where WWE legend The Undertaker saved his wife from a possible shark attack. Thus, the WWE legend has once again proved that he is not the one to mess with in real life. Throughout his memorable WWE career, the 'Deadman' has often dominated the ring and was one of the most intimidating and fierce characters. Recently, he proved that he is a strong character outside the ring as well, by taking on a shark. The Undertaker came to his wife's rescue who could have been attacked by a shark. Revealing the whole incident, his wife Michelle McCool shared a video on her official Instagram handle and wrote, "I was simply enjoying a book on the beach when this 'vegetation' looked a lot like a shark... so I text hubby @undertaker". In addition, she expressed her gratitude towards her better half with a picture and captioned, "Kinda digging that last picture... A LOT #myprotector". Andrew Tate claims US VP Kamala Harris 'largely incompetent' and prone to playing the 'race card'

Millennials, the generation of people born between 1981 and 1996, have been blamed for many things, ruining Airbnb, tattoos, mayonnaise, McDonald's and so much more. Don't believe us? Just go on Google and search "millennials ruined", you'll see. Now, a recent survey attempted to find who's the biggest fibber of all the generations. Turns out, millennials take the crown for being the biggest liars in the workplace and on social media.

What the study found: Millennials vs Boomers vs Gen Z

Online casino PlayStar conducted a survey of 1,306 participants, split equally between males and females, to explore their propensity for lying in different settings.

As per a report in New York Post, the results revealed that millennials, or those born between 1981 and 1996, were the worst offenders, with 13 per cent admitting to being dishonest at least once a day.

In contrast, only two per cent of baby boomers, those born between 1946 and 1964, confessed to telling a daily fib.

Tattoos are amazing! They are exquisite forms of self-expression and let us create art on our skin, making us unique masterpieces. They can tell stories and hold special meanings. But sometimes, people take it too far and turn art into an obsession. This is what happened with Melissa Sloan, a 46-year-old Welsh mother, who has gained notoriety for her extensive collection of tattoos.

The mother of two boasts of 800 tattoos, many of them on her face. Now, the obsession has come back to haunt her. Her extensive collection of tattoos has landed her in hot soup, not only is she unable to find work, her unconventional appearance has also led to her being barred from various places including...tattoo shops.

Talking to the Daily Star, the 46-year-old woman revealed that she gets at least three designs etched on to her face every week.

She fuels her "addiction" by having most of her tattoos done by her partner Luke in the comfort of their home, often using unconventional methods.

A video of a police officer throwing a woman on the ground and pepper spraying her face in Los Angeles, California has gone viral on social media.

An investigation has been launched into the incident and the officers have been taken off field duty, according to the county sheriff's department.

As per the video, the incident took place outside the WinCo grocery store on W Ave K 4 on June 24.

As per the statement released by the department, at that time, the deputies were apprehending a man and a woman for supposedly shoplifting inside the store. "Why am I under arrest ... for what?" the man is heard saying in the bodycam footage. "You are not under arrest, you are being detained," responded the deputy.

"Detained for what?" the seemingly frustrated man asked. Another deputy said, "Calm down!"

The deputies, after placing the man in handcuffs, then walked towards the woman who was recording the incident on her mobile phone. She then yells, “No, you can't touch me!" as the deputies try to grab her by the arm.

"Get down on the ground!" the deputy yells, as the woman replies, “It's already on YouTube live!" As the struggle continues, the deputy says, “Stop it or I'll punch you in the face." "You punch me, you're going to get sued,” the woman responded.

Another deputy said, "Calm down!" The deputies, after placing the man in handcuffs, then walked towards the woman who was recording the incident on her mobile phone. She then yells, “No, you can't touch me!" as the deputies try to grab her by the arm. "There's a narrative of saying, the deputies struck her down because she was recording,'' said Tom, according to ABC7. "She's not an innocent bystander. She's involved. She's detained in this robbery investigation." After the incident, the department issued a statement saying, "The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department has opened an investigation into this incident. While the Department does not make statements related to ongoing investigations, Sheriff Luna has made it clear that he expects Department personnel to treat all members of the public with dignity and respect, and that personnel who do not uphold our training standards will be held accountable. In the interest of transparency with our community, the Sheriff's Department is releasing body-worn camera video from the incident."
Geoffrey Hinton, a prominent figure in the field of artificial intelligence (AI) who is often called one of the 'godfathers of AI', has called on governments to intervene and prevent machines from taking control of society. Speaking at the Collision tech conference in Toronto, Hinton emphasised the importance of understanding how AI might attempt to take control before it surpasses human intelligence.
