'Seductress' roofies date, steals jewellery, diamond-studded Rolex watch worth thousands of dollars

Experts have raised concerns that next year's elections in the UK and the US may be plagued by a surge of AI-driven disinformation. They warn that the proliferation of Artificial Intelligence generated images, text, and deep fake videos, spread by swarms of AI-powered propaganda bots, could have a significant impact.

In recent days, concerns about AI have soared, particularly following breakthroughs in generative AI technology.

Why is AI a concern now?

As per the Guardian, while earlier waves of "propaganda bots" relied on simple pre-written messages or "paid trolls", tools like ChatGPT and Midjourney hold the ability to produce realistic text, images, and even voice on command. This has raised concerns about interactive election interference on a large scale.

A study by NewsGuard, an organisation that monitors misinformation, tested ChatGPT and Google's Bard chatbot and found that they were capable of generating false news narratives when prompted. This highlights the potential for AI tools to mass-produce variations of fake stories, which raises concerns about the deliberate dissemination of false information.

On Friday, NewsGuard also announced that there has been a two-fold increase in AI-generated news and information websites, which have more than doubled to 125 in two weeks.

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman's warning about ChatGPT and other AI models

Earlier this week, on Tuesday, Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, and the creator of ChatGPT, warned that the latest generation of AI models has the potential to manipulate users.

Highlighting the need for regulation, public education, and transparency regarding the use of AI, he said, "The general ability of these models to manipulate and persuade, to provide one-on-one interactive disinformation is a significant area of concern."

"Regulation would be quite wise: people need to know if they’re talking to an AI, or if content that they’re looking at is generated or not. The ability to really model … to predict humans, I think is going to require a combination of companies doing the right thing, regulation and public education," he added.

AI-powered disinformation

Professor Michael Wooldridge of the Alan Turing Institute identified AI-powered disinformation as his primary concern about the technology. He noted that generative AI can generate disinformation on an "industrial scale".

"Right now in terms of my worries for AI, it is number one on the list. We have elections coming up in the UK and the US and we know social media is an incredibly powerful conduit for misinformation. But we now know that generative AI can produce disinformation on an industrial scale."

He said chatbots like ChatGPT can produce tailored misinformation targeted at specific political groups or demographics, adding that "it's an afternoon's work for somebody with a bit of programming experience to create fake identities and just start generating these fake news stories."

AI-generated images

AI-generated imagery is another problem. Remember the pictures of Donald Trump getting arrested and the Pope in a 'dope' puffer jacket? That's the work of artificial intelligence.

Earlier this year, as these images went viral, many people raised concerns about the potential use of generated imagery to cause confusion and misinformation.

However, Sam Altman, while addressing US Senators, suggested that these concerns might be exaggerated or blown out of proportion. He compared AI-generated images to the earlier adoption of Photoshop.

He said that people eventually developed an understanding that images could be manipulated.

"Photoshop came on to the scene a long time ago and for a while people were really quite fooled by Photoshopped images – then pretty quickly developed an understanding that images might be Photoshopped."

However, in spite of Altman's statement, as AI capabilities advance, there are concerns that it is becoming increasingly difficult to trust things on social media and that as the technology develops further, the difficulty in differentiating between misinformation and purposeful disinformation will only increase.

AI and voice cloning

In January, voice cloning gained significant attention when a manipulated video of US President Joe Biden surfaced. The original footage, in which he discussed sending tanks to Ukraine, was altered using voice simulation technology to make it appear as though he was attacking transgender people. The doctored video was widely circulated on social media platforms.

The growing availability of voice cloning services, including the cloning of corporate executives and public figures, raises concerns about its potential misuse.

Recorded Future, a US cybersecurity firm, warned that rogue actors could sell voice cloning services online.

Alexander Leslie, an analyst with the firm, said that the technology is improving and poses a heightened threat as the US presidential election approaches.

"Without widespread education and awareness, this could become a real threat vector as we head into the presidential election," he said.

Steven Brill, the co-CEO of NewsGuard, expressed concern about the potential misuse of chatbot technology by malicious individuals to create varied versions of fake stories. He said, "the danger is someone using it deliberately to pump out these false narratives".

In February, Toronto's three-term mayor John Tory resigned after a controversy shook the foundations of his reputation. Vying to replace Tory as the next mayor is a rescue dog and a candidate who promises that he is "definitely a real man and NOT three raccoons in a trench coat".

Rescue dog, 'NOT three racoons in a suit,' and 100 more candidates sign-up for Toronto mayoral election race

It has long been said that Humans are 'social animals,' we thrive on being around people. We all know isolation can be emotionally taxing, which is why it has long been used as a form of punishment in jails. But can social isolation affect you mentally and impact your energy levels? New research shows that isolation affects your energy levels the same way as going without food does.

Researchers from the University of Vienna found that socially isolating for a period of eight hours has detrimental effects on a person. This long without company, a person's body experiences a fall in energy levels equivalent to the decrease that comes with starving for eight hours.

The research suggests that social isolation during the COVID-19 pandemic may have had an unexpected energy toll on people.

Based on research carried out both in a laboratory setting and during the COVID-19 quarantine periods, the study suggests that social personality traits may also influence the individual's reaction to social isolation.

As per SciTechDaily, just as prolonged periods without food can lead to hunger, a lack of social interaction can lead to a craving response in the brain, driving us to seek social connections again.

This is supported by the "social homeostasis" theory, which proposes that there is a homeostatic system in place to independently regulate our need for social interaction.

Although our understanding of the psychological reactions to social isolation remains limited, the study’s authors propose that lowered energy may be part of our homeostatic response to a lack of social contact and a potential precursor of the more detrimental effects of long-term social isolation.

The study involved 30 female volunteers who, on three separate days, spent eight hours in isolation without social contact, without food, or with both social contact and food. They reported their stress, mood, and fatigue levels multiple times throughout the day, while physiological stress responses such as heart rate and cortisol were recorded by the scientists.

The results were compared with measurements from a study conducted during the lockdown in Austria and Italy in the spring of 2020.

Data from 87 participants who had spent at least an eight-hour period in isolation were used, and their stress and behavioural effects were assessed several times a day for seven days.

The results of the laboratory study led by Giorgia Silani from the University of Vienna showed similarities between social isolation and food deprivation, with both inducing lowered energy and heightened fatigue.

"In the lab study, we found striking similarities between social isolation and food deprivation.
"It is well-known that long-term loneliness and fatigue are related, but we know little about the immediate mechanisms that underlie this link. The fact that we see this effect even after a short period of social isolation suggests that low energy could be a 'social homeostatic' adaptive response, which in the long run can become maladaptive," explains Silani.

When you were four, what did you want to be when you grew up? An astronaut, a superhero, or a unicorn? Most of us had big dreams inspired by our favourite cartoons, comics or storybook.
Max Alexander, a first-grader claims he was the renowned fashion designer Gucci in his past life, and his dreams in this one are inspired by his work and passion in his previous birth.

Under the campaign, a video was shared by Starbucks India which featured a transgender woman who was meeting her parents at one of its outlets.

In the video, a transgender woman with the name “Arpita” appears to be meeting her parents after a long time. The father of the woman looks upset over some situation, while the mother tries to calm him down.

When Arpita reaches the coffee shop, she introduces herself to her parents as “Arpita and not Arpit”, which was her birth name.
Starbucks India captioned the viral post, “Your name defines who you are – whether it’s Arpit or Arpita. At Starbucks, we love and accept you for who you are. Because being yourself means everything to us. #ItStartsWithYourName.”

Microsoft has now expanded public access to its generative artificial intelligence programmes and the AI-enhanced features are now available for anyone to use without a waitlist. In a blog post published on Thursday, Yusuf Mehdi, corporate vice president of Microsoft, announced that the features of the company's Bing search engine and Edge internet browser are now open for anyone to use. "This means that it will now be easier than ever for everyone to try the new Bing and Edge by simply signing into Bing with your Microsoft account," he said. According to him, the services have been enhanced with the ability to work with images as well as texts. In the future, Microsoft intends to add video features to the mix. The executive said that a Bing "Image Creator" was recently integrated into Microsoft's AI chatbot's repertoire, which enables it to generate visual, as well as written content. Additionally, the company will be expanding Image Creator's capabilities so that users can use their native languages. "We are expanding Image Creator to all languages in Bing," said Mehdi, adding, "So, now, you can create images in your native language."
Cristiano Ronaldo-starrer Al-Nassr missed out on a chance to take the top spot in the Saudi Pro League with a 1-1 draw versus 14th-ranked Al-Khaleej on Monday (May 08).
Air India has made the headlines once again, this time for a pilot treating the cockpit as his living room and 'entertaining' a female friend. The incident happened on international flight AI 915 from Dubai to Delhi on February 27th. As per an HT report, the pilot not only mistreated the cabin crew but also endangered the passengers with his actions.

India's aviation regulator, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) is currently investigating the complaint filed by a member of the cabin crew.

The pilot allegedly wanted the cabin crew to make sure that the cockpit, a.k.a., the control centre for the aeroplane, appeared welcoming to his guest.

As per the complaint, the whole flight was wrought with problems. To start with, the pilots were late; they didn't show up at their reporting time and instead entered the aeroplane late, with the passengers.

Then the pilot against whom the complaint has been filed made demands for a seat upgrade for his friend and when that wasn't available asked for her to be seated in the cockpit. The guest was eventually seated in the first observer seat, which goes against DGCA safety norms.

According to DGCA's Civil Aviation Regulations (CAR): "An employee of the aircraft operator, who has the permission of the pilot-in-command (PIC) and whose duties are such that his/ her entry into the cockpit is necessary for the safe operation of the aircraft can only be allowed in the cockpit provided they have done the mandatory BA tests."

In addition, the pilot asked her to be served alcohol in the cockpit, a request the complainant denied. Following this, the pilot's behaviour took a dark turn, and he became "snappy and rude," and started treating the cabin crew member "like a servant working exclusively for him."

DCGA said that it was "looking at the technical and safety aspects involved in the matter." Air India too has launched an investigation and has "constituted a committee to investigate the issues raised."

The Golden Temple, which is one of the holiest sites for Sikhs in India, has become the stage for a controversy. A girl, one of the many devotees visiting the holy shrine, was purportedly denied entry into the Harminder Sahib Gurudwara, popularly known as Golden Temple, which is located in Amritsar, a city in the North Indian state of Punjab. A video of the alleged incident is going viral on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook alike.

In the video's initial moments, the girl could be heard talking to a man, complaining about being denied entry into the Golden Temple, allegedly because of a tricolour she had painted on her face. She blames a guard at the holy shrine for this.

After this, the guard when asked, "India nhi hai ye" (this isn't India?) says "Nhi, Punjab hai ye" (No this is Punjab).

Following this statement, things seem to get heated up, and the two men can be heard arguing. At one point, the guard even tries to snatch the phone out of the hands of the girl recording this video.

Responding to the video, the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC), the organisation that looks after the upkeep of Sikh places of worship in India, apologised for the misbehaviour of the temple official. The Golden Temple, which is one of the holiest sites for Sikhs in India, has become the stage for a controversy. In the video, the guard could be heard saying that the girl was stopped because of the flag she had on her face. After this, the guard when asked, "India nhi hai ye" (this isn't India?) says "Nhi, Punjab hai ye" (No this is Punjab). They also said that the flag painted on the girl's face wasn't the Indian tricolour as it was missing the Ashok Chakra and that it could've been a political flag. Artificial Intelligence helps 'solve the mystery,' match medicine to patient, aid in treatment of depression

The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 edition is churning out thrilling contests with each passing day. In match 23, the defending champions Gujarat Titans (GT) locked horns with Rajasthan Royals (RR) at the iconic Narendra Modi Cricket Stadium, Ahmedabad on Sunday (April 16). Having a 3-0 lead over the Royals, Hardik Pandya-led Gujarat aimed to continue their winning streak over last year's finalists but Sanju Samson & Co. emerged on top by three wickets in a tight contest.

In a high-voltage encounter, RR opted to bowl first and restricted Gujarat to 177 for 7. Sandeep Sharma was the pick of the bowlers, returning with 2 for 25 whereas the likes of Shubman Gill, Sai Sudharshan, Abhinav Manohar, Hardik and David Miller got starts to take their side to a competitive score. In reply, RR were 47 for 3 and 55 for 4 before Sanju Samson (32-ball 60) and Shimron Hetymer's unbeaten 56 off 26 balls propelled their side to a stunning three-wicket win on the final over. When RR was reeling early in the run-chase, captain Hardik tried to get into the skin of his counterpart Samson by sledging.

#AlexaDown: Thousands of users report outage of Amazon's virtual assistant technology Alexa

Artificial Intelligence is everywhere, and we mean everywhere. From virtual friends to chatbots, to image and video generation, AI is making headlines. But did you think it could ever be a part of sleep? One of the most basic needs of any living being is good rest. For many, sleep is an actual hobby. What if artificial intelligence takes over this part of our lives too? No, AI won't be doing the sleeping for us, but it would be contributing to how we sleep.

Believe it or not, artificial intelligence is already a part of the industry. There exist special mattresses that are equipped with AI technology and help you sleep better.

Here's how Artificial Intelligence can help modern-day Goldilocks get a good night's sleep

Today, technology enables us to always stay connected to our loved ones and our peers. While this is largely seen as a positive, an often ignored negative of this incessant connection is that so many of us end up working overtime without even realising it. We end up "staying in touch" and responding to work-related queries not just via email but also through instant messaging applications like WhatsApp. Nevertheless, this doesn't get considered as work, in or outside of work hours; so naturally it isn't accepted as overtime if it's done in your personal time. However, a court in China has passed a ruling that may serve to change this narrative.

The court ruled that the time spent by employees on messaging app for work-related purposes outside of office hours can be counted as overtime.

In a case brought by an employee who claimed to have worked more than 2,000 hours of overtime in one year, mostly due to responding to messages on the app, the court ruled in the employee's favour and instructed the employer to pay for the additional hours worked. As per a Times UK report, the employee who is only known by her family name Li has been awarded around $4,365 or 30,000 yuan for work outside of office hours.

Her employer reportedly argued that Li's claims of overtime were unfounded and said that the work did not qualify as such. They said that employees only had to reply to "occasional questions" from staff.

The ruling is seen as a victory for workers' rights in China, where labour laws as per the report are often poorly enforced, and employees are vulnerable to exploitation.

Reportedly, in China, long working hours are common and on top of that, workers are often expected to be available 24/7 through messaging apps like WhatsApp or its Chinese equivalent, WeChat.

As per the report, the ruling may have implications for other Chinese companies that similarly rely heavily on messaging apps for work-related communication. This may prompt them to re-evaluate their communication policies. Furthermore, the judgement has raised questions on the legal status of apps like WhatsApp and WeChat and whether they should be subject to the same overtime rules as traditional forms of work.

The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 edition saw another close encounter when the Delhi Capitals (DC) hosted the Mumbai Indians (MI) at the Arun Jaitley Stadium, New Delhi on Tuesday evening (April 11). Chasing 173, Rohit Sharma-led MI held their nerves to win match 16 on the final ball with six wickets to spare. During the game, the momentum shifted from one side to the other constantly and MI were left with two required off the last ball. While Anrich Nortje bowled a classy final over, MI batters -- Tim David and Cameron Green -- completed two runs to finish the run-chase in style.

Talking about the final delivery, Nortje bowled it at the stumps as David moved forward, connected and sprinted for two as the ball went to deep mid-off. Warner came to the ball in a flash and went for a flat throw but it wasn't quite accurate as David-Green ran two and ended the game in MI's favour. After his throw, the cameras moved towards DC's head coach Ricky Ponting and Director of Cricket Sourav Ganguly as the two legends were left unamused. Here's the video:

Match 15 of the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 edition saw Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) beat the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) by one wicket, on the final ball of a contest that went down to the wire. Opting to bowl, KL Rahul & Co. were in for the leather hunt courtesy of Virat Kohli's 61 (44), Faf du Plessis' 79* off 46 and Glenn Maxwell's 29-ball 59 as RCB posted a mammoth 212 for 2. In reply, LSG rode on fifties from Marcus Stoinis 65 (30) and Nicholas Pooran's 62 (19) to take their side home in a thrilling clash at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium, Bengaluru.

The clash saw a 115-metre six, fifties from all the big hitters, a last-over finish, a hit-wicket, failed attempt at running the non-striker out for backing too far. There was sheer chaos at the iconic ground, in front of a jam-packed stadium, with emotions flying high among players and fans. Gautam Gambhir, LSG's team mentor, was at his aggressive best after his side's favourable result and even silenced the Chinnaswamy crowd with a finger-on-lips gesture. After the match, Gambhir even shared an intense handshake with Kohli but the duo shared a warm hug when they met each other in the dressing room.
