Yearender 2025: A recap of the Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs case that shook the entertainment industry

An explosive docuseries about Sean "Diddy" Combs -- produced by his long-time rival 50 Cent -- has been released on Netflix, despite the disgraced music mogul's attempts to block its airing. The four-part "Sean Combs: The Reckoning" chronicles the career and dramatic fall of the 56-year-old rapper and record executive, who was sentenced in October to 50 months in prison for prostitution-related crimes. During his trial, a New York court heard how he coerced his former girlfriend Casandra Ventura into performing so-called "freak "offs"—sexual marathons with hired men that Combs directed and sometimes filmed. The Netflix series features interviews with other associates who detail his allegedly predatory behaviour, as well as with two people who claim that the hip-hop star sexually assaulted them. Combs's lawyers had sought to halt the show's Tuesday release, sending a cease and desist letter to Netflix a day earlier claiming an apparent copyright violation. They point to footage in the show of Combs speaking with his legal team days before his September 2024 arrest, in which he urges them to "find somebody that will work with us, that has dealt in the dirtiest of dirty business of media and propaganda." Juda Engelmayer, Combs's spokesperson, told AFP that the artist had been capturing the video to "tell his own story, in his own way." "It is fundamentally unfair, and illegal, for Netflix to misappropriate that work." Netflix, in a statement cited by the Washington Post, said the footage of Combs was legally obtained.Engelmayer also complained that rapper Curtis "50 Cent" Jackson was allowed to executive produce the documentary series, calling him a "long-time adversary with a personal vendetta who has spent too much time slandering Mr Combs." The pair have a feud that dates back to the mid-2000s, when 50 Cent released a diss track accusing Combs of knowing who murdered famed rapper The Notorious B.I.G. in 1997. Combs was convicted in July of two counts of transporting people across state lines for prostitution. But a jury acquitted him of the most serious charges: sex trafficking and racketeering. He is currently being held in a low-security federal prison some 80 miles (130 kilometres) south of New York. He is due to be released in May 2028.

Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs' attorney approached Trump for pardon ahead of probable decade-long sentencing

Even during his federal criminal trial in New York, the descriptions of Sean Combs were frequently those of awe: one former assistant called him "a god among men." "Larger than life," said witnesses over and over -- his accusers included. And that he was, until it all came crashing down. The music and entertainment titan known for his legendary A-list "white parties" had multiple mansions, a private jet, a business empire and scores of accolades. Then in September 2024, he was arrested on sweeping charges including running a criminal ring that allowed him to commit harrowing sexual abuse. And after a two-month long courtroom saga, a jury of 12 New Yorkers on Wednesday found him guilty of two prostitution-related counts -- but acquitted him of more serious allegations of racketeering and sex trafficking. The outcome was not what prosecutors had hoped for -- a decisive conviction for grave crimes that could have kept him incarcerated for life. Nevertheless, even before the blockbuster proceedings began, Combs's reputation was in tatters. The 55-year-old still faces dozens of civil lawsuits in which he is accused of lurid abuse. And even his own team's defense came back to haunt him: the federal judge denied Combs bail as he awaits sentencing, reading back his attorneys' words in which they conceded again and again that he has a record of violence.
- Rebrands upon rebrands -
Combs, the founder of Bad Boy Records whose proteges included the late Notorious B.I.G. and Mary J. Blige, was known as a high-flying, smooth-talking kingpin who ushered hip-hop from the underground to bottle-service clubs. He was continuously rebranding -- his monikers include "Puff Daddy," "P Diddy" and, more recently, "Brother Love." Court proceedings revealed a much seedier side, casting him as a violent, domineering boss whose inner circle helped him live life with impunity. Even before his arrest, the mushrooming accusations and legal action left many of his businesses reeling. And after a two-month long courtroom saga, a jury of 12 New Yorkers on Wednesday found him guilty of two prostitution-related counts -- but acquitted him of more serious allegations of racketeering and sex trafficking.

- Rebrands upon rebrands - Combs, the founder of Bad Boy Records whose proteges included the late Notorious B.I.G. There were symbolic measures as well: the city of New York had rescinded the honorary key they had bestowed upon him. But as was clear outside the courthouse throughout the proceedings, he still has a loyal fan base, especially in the city where he made his name. - Party boy and hip-hop mogul - Born Sean John Combs on November 4, 1969, in Harlem, the artist entered the industry as an intern in 1990 at Uptown Records where he eventually became a talent director. Sean Diddy Combs found NOT GUILTY for sex trafficking, racketeering

After weeks of painstaking testimony in the high-profile trial of Sean "Diddy" Combs, legal teams will enter a pivotal moment of the proceedings Thursday as they deliver closing arguments. Both sides have said their climactic summations will last several hours each, as the fate of the once-powerful music mogul hangs in the balance. Prosecutors say Combs, 55, masterminded a decades-long pattern of wrongdoing that saw him and an inner circle of employees carry out crimes including forced labor, arson, bribery and witness tampering. The famed producer coerced two women -- the singer Casandra Ventura and later a woman who testified under the pseudonym Jane -- into years of drug-addled sex with paid escorts, prosecutors say. The most serious charge of racketeering -- which includes the existence of a criminal enterprise that committed a pattern of offenses -- could send Combs to prison for life.
