Former Pakistan pacer Shoaib Akhtar criticised Indian skipper Rohit Sharma after his team's disappointing exit from T20 World Cup 2022. India suffered a humiliating 10-wicket defeat against England in the second semi-final to crash out of the tournament on Thursday (November 10).

Akhtar said Rohit looked a bit depressed as captain and his body language was quite off during the tournament. The Indian skipper struggled with the bat throughout the tournament and was not able to deliver at the top. He managed to score only 115 runs in six matches in what was a forgetful campaign for the Indian captain.

Akhtar advised Rohit, who missed a number of series in the build-up to the T20 World Cup, to spend more time with his team stating that captaincy is not an easy job. He also questioned whether Rohit was ready to take up captaincy when Kohli stepped down last year.

"So, the pressure has to be there on seniors. They should be told that there are boys who are scoring well. And if the seniors don’t perform well, they might be told, ‘thank you, very much’ by the board," Sehwag further added.

Sehwag has a genuine point given India have had all the experience in past ICC events and still haven't won a mega title over the years. Many have called for a change in guard with Hardik Pandya to be named the T20I captain and a new team can revolve around him.

It remains to be seen in which direction is Team India headed post the T20 WC. For now, Hardik is set to lead India in the forthcoming T20I series in the New Zealand tour, from November 18, whereas Shikhar Dhawan will take charge of the ODI side versus the Kiwis.

"Having won the Indian Premier League on his first assignment as the captain, they would have marked Hardik Pandya out as the next captain. While India finished on top of Group 1 with eight points from five matches in Super 12, England made it to the semi-finals after beating Afghanistan in their last Super 12 game, pipping hosts Australia on net run rate. Stokes admitted England have not played their best cricket so far in the tournament but will hope to bring their A game against India.

"I think the way we have managed to get through not playing our best cricket so far and now we find ourselves here. So obviously it's exciting. But we know we need to get this game done on Thursday, against a very strong Indian team which no one will ever take lightly," said the England star.
