On Tuesday (December 27), the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) selection committee -- under outgoing chief Chetan Sharma -- announced India's squads for the white-ball home series versus Sri Lanka, which gets underway next year on January 03 in Mumbai. As expected, Hardik Pandya has once again been named as the captain of the T20I squad with no big guns available whereas Rohit Sharma will return to take charge of the ODI line-up after his thumb injury during the Bangladesh tour. Hardik has also been promoted as the new ODI vice-captain (despite KL Rahul's presence).&nbsp;

2022 is coming to an end. The calendar year has been an eventful one for sports lovers across the globe. The cricketing fans have had plenty to cheer for with a plethora of big events passing by. The senior women's team completely outplayed their male counterparts in the calendar year. From World Cup heartbreaks to CWG'22 silver medal: Reliving Team India's 2022

Ben Stokes' England Test team completed a historic whitewash over hosts Pakistan in the third and final Test on Tuesday (December 20). Resuming Day 4 at 112-2 with only 55 more required for a win, Stokes-Ben Duckett (82 not out) ended the proceedings in the first session with eight wickets in hand as England won the series 3-0, resulting in Pakistan being whitewashed for the first time at home.

Kaneria didn't mince his words and feels Babar should step aside as the Test captain and asked for someone else to take charge. He opined that the Pakistan captain had a good chance of learning captaincy by looking at&nbsp;Stokes and England coach Brendon McCullum. Kaneria added, "Babar Azam is a big zero as captain. As per the BCCI statement, Rohit had consulted a doctor in Mumbai and is asked to take proper treatment, thus ruling him out of the match.

“India captain Rohit Sharma met with a specialist in Mumbai for his left thumb injury, which he sustained during the 2nd ODI against Bangladesh. He has been advised appropriate management for this injury and will not be available for the first Test against Bangladesh,” the BCCI said in a statement.

“The BCCI Medical Team will take a call on his availability for the second and final Test at a later stage. The All-India Senior Selection Committee has named Abhimanyu Easwaran as his replacement for the first Test.”&nbsp;

Earlier, left-arm seamer Jaydev Unadkat was also added to the squad.

The two-match Test series will begin on Wednesday, December 14th in Chattogram.

Speaking to India Today in a recent catch up, the leg-spinner briefed on how he felt about his omission from the playing XI, and also revealed what conversation he had with the captain Rohit Sharma regarding this.

“It's not an individual game. Every team has their own set of combination. And then I saw Ashwin and Axar performing well...those things happen in life. I just knew that if I get an opportunity I have to be ready and coach and Rohit bhai had clarified that to me,” Chahal said.

After facing two back-to-back blows in terms of not getting picked in the XI for T20 World Cup, Chahal is optimistic about retaining his place in the side for the 50-over World Cup in India next year. He although said playing for his country remains his priority, getting selected in the XI is not something on which he has any control.

“The 50-over World Cup is going to happen next. The last World Cup which I had played, in 2019, was also a 50-over World Cup. I don't tend to think about all this&nbsp;stuff that much. For me, what matters is playing for India, that is my first goal. Now, whether I am picked in the XI or not that is not in my hand. I hope I can continue playing in the same manner, get to play for my country and hope India becomes the champions in 2023,” Chahal added.
