Ravi Ashwin urges fans to remain patient with Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma with 2023 World Cup in sight

Rohit Sharma scored his first ODI hundred in three years while Shubman Gill continued his domination with another sublime ton as India completed a clean sweep with a 90-run win over New Zealand in the third match here on Tuesday.

Batters from both sides lit up the dead rubber as 680 runs were scored at the Holkar Stadium.

Rohit (101 off 85 balls) got to the three-figure mark for the first time since January 2020 while Gill (112 off 78) scored his fourth ODI hundred to take India to 385 for nine.

Following twin failures, the New Zealand top-order put up a much better show. Devon Conway (138) stitched crucial partnerships but Shardul Thakur (3/45) and Kuldeep Yadav (3/62) regularly struck to bowl out the Balck Caps for 295 in 41.2 overs.

It was India's second consecutive clean sweep, having beaten Sri Lanka last week. After Hardik Pandya (1/37) got rid of Finn Allen (0), Conway shared 106 runs with Henry Nicholls and 78 runs with Daryl Mitchell (24).

In the absence of Mohammed Shami and Mohammed Siraj, the Indian bowlers struggled initially, leaking runs as Conway tonked the ball all around the park. 
Shardul, however, managed to turn the game, as he took back-to-back wickets of Mitchell and Tom Latham (0) in the 26th over.

In his next over, Thakur sent Glenn Phillips (5) packing with a cross-seamed delivery. 
Umran Malik (1/52) then got Conway as the centurion pulled awkwardly with Rohit doing the rest at midwicket as the match seemed to slip out of New Zealand's grasp.

The spin duo of Kuldeep and Yuzvendra Chahal (2/43) then cleaned up the tail.

Earlier, Rohit and Gill put up a belligerent 212-run opening stand, sharing 22 fours and 11 sixes between them.

Rahul Dravid joked on the eve of the match that bowlers don't want to bowl as soon as they land in Indore because of the batter-friendly conditions. The batting great had a point, and the New Zealanders rolling over their arms during the first 25 overs would have shared Dravid's sentiment.

At one point every ball that Rohit and Gill's bat touched was either flying to the boundary or over it.

Gill hit four fours and a six to plunder 22 runs off Lockie Ferguson in the eighth over, symbolising the kind of form the 23-year-old has been in lately.

The youngster didn't have to even time the ball for it to run to the boundary. After three fours, he launched the short ball for an upper-cut six.

With the outfield quick and the wicket flat, the rather inexperienced New Zealand bowling unit had no answers to the Indian openers' carnage.

The 26th over saw both Rohit and Gill getting their centuries. Rohit pulled away to deep square to get to his mark and, three balls later, Gill got to the triple-figure mark, his third in four innings.

Indian team’s head coach Rahul Dravid said the management is prioritising certain tournaments like the Border-Gavaskar series and World Test Championship while managing the workload of seniors like&nbsp;Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma. In this cricket-heavy calendar, Dravid stressed on picking right players for particular series as they don’t want pile of injured players just before the start of any important tournament. Speaking to the media ahead of the final ODI against New Zealand in Indore, the former captain addressed this issue.

“We need to give certain priorities to certain white-ball tournaments due to the amount of cricket that we’re playing. The Border-Gavaskar Trophy and the World Test Championship are very important for us. There are certain white-ball tournaments that we have to prioritize,” said Dravid.

With Bracewell and Mitchell Santner at the crease, India would have ideally liked to put the game to bed early. However, the defiant southpaws had other plans. Both the batters got stuck in and took the attack to the Indian bowlers. Bracewell was especially severe with his audacious strokeplay as Hardik Pandya and Shardul Thakur bore the brunt of it. The visitors managed to gather 113 runs between the 31 and 40 overs to set the stage for a grandstand finish. The NZ batters had the momentum but a target as big as 350 was always going to come with its set of challenges. In the end, the NZ side fell short by an agonising 12 runs margin. However, after playing a match-winning knock against Sri Lanka in the second ODI at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata on Thursday, the 30-year-old talked about his new role.&nbsp;

Batting at number five benefited both India and KL Rahul himself as in 15 innings he has batted at that position, KL has scored at an average of 54.25 and a strike-rate of 102.03. He also has six fifties and a hundred to his name, and above all, he has looked settled and has given India the much-required stability that they were missing.&nbsp;

Speaking with Star Sports after the match, KL said batting at number five helped him understand his game a little bit better. He also revealed that Rohit Sharma wants him to bat at the same spot only.

"Batting at No. 5 has just helped me understand my game a little bit better. Given the ball is slightly older, you have to play spin straightaway and that's not what I am used to usually. Obviously, Rohit [Sharma] is very clear that that's where he wants me to bat and he's conveyed that to me. So now I am challenging myself to get used to this position," Rahul told Star Sports after the second ODI.

The right-handed batter said the best thing about batting at number five is that you don't have to rush into batting.

"One thing I really enjoy is that you don't have to rush back into batting. You get time to put your feet up, have a nice cold shower, have a good meal and then relax and then see what's happening before walking in. That's the good thing about batting at No. 5," he added.

Now that he plays as a keeper-batter in the team, KL elaborated on his dual role saying&nbsp;he has thrived on performing in tough conditions and under pressure and likes this responsibility.

"I've played at No. 5, I've played at No. 4, I've been asked to keep wickets. I think it is very fun for me. I have thrived on performing in tough conditions and under pressure. It tells me that the team trusts me and backs me. It has helped me understand my batting and myself better. When you decide to choose a team game as a sport or profession, you have to be ready or flexible to do whatever job you're asked to do," KL added.

Many believed that Kishan had done enough to cement his spot as an opener, with Shikhar Dhawan dropped, but the Indian team management want to persist with Shubman.&nbsp;

Speaking on his opening partner, Rohit said in the pre-match presser on Monday (January 09),&nbsp;"Both openers (Gill and Kishan) have done really well. But looking at how both have gone through, I think it is fair that we give Gill a chance to have a fair run because in the last games Gill got a lot of runs as well. Rohit straightaway went to him and interacted with the boy who was emotional seeing Hitman. “Rone ka kya baat hai, chota bacha hai tu (Why are you crying, you are just a little boy)," said Rohit. Following India’s semi final exit from the T20 World Cup in Australia last year, the call for a new look Indian team in T20Is took the centre stage. It was only after that the then selection panel was sacked and decision to remove Rohit as the T20I captain was taken. Now, ahead of the first ODI against Sri Lanka in Guwahati on Tuesday,&nbsp;Rohit addressed the media and opened up on his T20I future and also spoke on Jasprit Bumrah, who after getting recalled for the Lanka series earlier, got dropped on the eve of the first match.

Citing players’ workload management as a reason for not remaining in current scheme of things in T20Is, Rohit said the management had cleared earlier that concentration would remain on the ODIs in 2023 given it is a World Cup year. The veteran batter added some players cannot play all three formats and would be rotated, and that he very much falls in the that category.

"It was made clear in the past that it's a World Cup year for us, 50-over World Cup and for some of the guys, it's not possible to play all formats. If you look at the schedule, the matches are back-to-back. So we decided on looking at some players' workload. Rohit said following the IPL this year, he will look into how things are panning out and then probably will take a call on his T20I future. But one thing that he asserted is he surely hasn’t thought about not playing this format.

"We have only 6 T20Is, 3 are over. We have 3 more against New Zealand. So we will manage to look after those till the IPL and we will see what happens after the IPL. But certainly, I have not decided to give up the format," Rohit added.

A couple of days later after this announcement was made, the BCCI on Monday, in a statement said that Bumrah wouldn’t be taking part in the upcoming ODI series.

Elaborating on Bumrah’s scenario, Rohit said, “It’s very unfortunate for him. The poor guy has been working really hard at the NCA for all this time,” Rohit said in the presser.

“Just when he got back, he had full fitness, he started bowling and everything. In the last two days, I think this incident happened when he felt a little bit of stiffness in his back. It’s nothing major, it’s just stiffness. And when Bumrah says anything, we have to be very cautious about it and that is what we did,” the captain added.

“I thought it was important for us to make that decision to pull him out because when we named him, he was in the process of getting his workload done, he was bowling in the nets. We need to be very careful with him. He had a major injury before the World Cup, so we have to be careful,” Rohit concluded.

Talking about Ishan Kishan, Rohit said the left-handed batter has been excellent for team but despite scoring big lately, the team wants to give an extended rope to those who were doing well before Ishan slammed a record-breaking double hundred against Bangladesh.

"I am not going to take anything from Ishan. He has been wonderful for us. He got a double hundred and I know what it takes to get a double hundred, it is a great achievement. But just to be honest and be fair to the guys who have done really well before that we need to give those guys enough chances as well," Rohit said.

Though Rohit said it is unfortunate for Ishan to be missing out, he would very well remain in the scheme of things in the build-up to the World Cup.

"It is unfortunate that we won't be able to play Ishan but looking at how things have panned out for us in the last 8-9 months, looking at how the ODIs have gone through for us, it is fair to give Gill that run and he has done extremely well in that position. We will definitely try out and keep Ishan in the mix and see how things pan out for us as we play lot of games ahead," he added.
