Delhi Capitals' (DC) pacer Avesh Khan has had a breakthrough season in IPL 2021, being the second-highest wicket-taker overall with 23 scalps in 15 games. Avesh has dismissed some of the greats of the game, such as MS Dhoni, Virat Kohli, etc.

For the unversed, Avesh got rid of Chennai Super Kings' (CSK) captain Dhoni twice during the league stage encounters when DC locked horns with the Yellow Army. The Delhi speedster's extra pace and bounce troubled Dhoni as he dismissed him twice and made heads turn. In an interview with ESPNCricinfo, Avesh has now revealed how DC captain Rishabh Pant plotted the dismissal of Dhoni on both the occasions.

“When Mahi bhai walked in, Rishabh told me to bring in the mid-on and mid-off. He said if he [Dhoni] hits you over them, that is fine, but don't pitch fuller, bowl your length. At first I disagreed with him and asked him not to bring in five fielders and leave only four inside [the 30-yard circle], but he insisted. So I did that and the second ball, he [Dhoni] attempted to hit over when he saw both fielders [mid-on and mid-off] inside the circle. He had not played for a while, and Rishabh took advantage of that and we got the wicket,” Avesh said.

Speaking on the second instance when he got rid of Dhoni, Avesh added, "Once again I had a chat with Rishabh. Basically, he said to pitch a hard length and let him [Dhoni] hit from there because it is tough to do that. And that is what I did and he edged."

DC pacer Avesh Khan spills the beans on how Rishabh Pant helped him in dismissing MS Dhoni twice

MS Dhoni has inspired generations with his playing style, captaincy, finishing skills. Over the years, he might not have been at his best with the willow, but he remains a potent threat as a keeper and captain. On Sunday evening (October 10), the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) captain came to his very best as a finisher in IPL 2021's Qualifier 1 versus the Rishabh Pant-led Delhi Capitals (DC); leading the Yellow Army to an emphatic 4-wicket win in the last over. With this, he took his side to their record 9th final in the IPL.

After asking DC to bat first, CSK had a stiff challenge to chase down 173 in 20 overs. DC rode on attacking knocks from Prithvi Shaw (60), Rishabh Pant (51*) and Shimron Hetmyer (37) to post 172-5. CSK lost Faf du Plessis soon but a century-stand from half-centurions Ruturaj Gaikwad (70) and Robin Uthappa (63) laid the platform for Chennai's win.

Nonetheless, Tom Curran brought DC back into the contest with regular strikes. In the end overs, CSK needed 19 off 9 balls when a woefully out-of-form Dhoni came out to bat, at No. 7, ahead of Ravindra Jadeja. Courtesy his 6-ball 18*, studded with one six and three back-to-back fours, CSK ended their winless streak vs DC this season to enter the summit clash.

As a result of the close contest, two young kids -- being ardent CSK supporters -- were left teary-eyed at the stands. Shouting and cheering relentlessly for the Yellow Army, the CSK skipper Dhoni tossed up an autographed ball to the kids -- particularly for the emotional young girl -- to win hearts off the field as well. IPL 2021: MS Dhoni gives autographed ball to a teary-eyed young girl after CSK's Qualifier 1 win vs DC - Watch

Rishabh Pant-led Delhi Capitals (DC) had the edge over MS Dhoni's Chennai Super Kings (CSK) when they squared off with each other in Qualifier 1 of the IPL 2021 playoffs on Sunday evening (October 10), at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium, Dubai.

Opting to bowl first, CSK managed to restrict DC to 172-5 riding as the one-time runners-up rode on half-centuries from Prithvi Shaw (60), Pant's 51 not out and Shimron Hetmyer's 37. In reply, CSK were oncourse for a win being well-placed at 113-1 courtesy a century-stand Ruturaj Gaikwad (70) and Robin Uthappa (63).

Nonetheless, Tom Curran's regular strikes in the 14th over, followed by Kagiso Rabada's tight 15th over, led to DC's comeback. While Anrich Nortje also gave away only 8 runs in the 16th over, DC missed the plot from thereon by not bowling Kagiso Rabada as the South African ended with 3-0-23-0.

Speaking to ESPNCricinfo, former Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) captain Gautam Gambhir decoded the reason behind DC's loss and explained, "I’ve always believed that the 19th over is the most important over. Although Avesh Khan got rid of Ruturaj Gaikwad, you have to go with your best death bowler and it had to be Rabada, no doubt about it."

“Avesh bowled the 17th, Nortje 18th, Rabada 19th, and Tom Curran 20th – that should have been the sequence. Going with Avesh for the 17th and 19th overs wasn’t the right decision. Yes. Rabada isn’t in the best of form, but you’ve got to back him to do the job as he’s playing continuously and he’s a world-class bowler,“ he added.

IPL 2021: DC skipper Rishabh Pant 'disappointed' after losing to CSK in Qualifier 1

MS Dhoni finally did it for the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) with the bat on Sunday evening (October 10) as the three-time champions beat Rishabh Pant-led Delhi Capitals (DC) by 4 wickets in a thrilling Qualifier 1 encounter in IPL 2021, at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium, Dubai.

After opting to bowl first, CSK restricted DC to a competitive 172-5 as the last year's runners-up rode on half-centuries from Prithvi Shaw (60), Rishabh Pant's 51* and Shimron Hetmyer's 37. In reply, CSK were in the hunt courtesy fifties from Robin Uthappa (42-ball 63) and in-form Ruturaj Gaikwad's 70. However, they were reduced to 119-4, from 113-1, as the match got very close and intense in the end overs.

An out-of-form Dhoni walked out to bat at No. 7, ahead of finisher Ravindra Jadeja, and rolled back the clock with his power-hitting to take CSK to their ninth final courtesy his 6-ball 18*. As soon as Dhoni hit the winning runs in the final over, off Tom Curran, the crowd went berserk seeing MSD return back to form. On the other hand, Dhoni's wife Sakshi was emotional and hugged her daughter Ziva, although not visible in the video, seeing her husband's memorable finish.

So you want to get that out of the system. If you are batting well in the nets, just look for the ball, what are the variations, where the bowler could bowl. Team India spinner Yuzvendra Chahal recently recalled wicket-keeper batsman Rishabh Pant's struggles in the Indian team during his initial days in international cricket. Pant was once touted as an ideal replacement for former captain MS Dhoni and had been backed by many to become one of the future stars of Indian cricket before enduring a rough patch in his career.

From being touted as Dhoni's replacement, Pant was dropped from the ODI and T20I squads last year. He bounced back after impressing with his performances in the Test series against Australia Down Under and has now cemented his place in the Indian side across formats. Chahal recalled how fans used to tease Pant with Dhoni's name at the stadiums on his mistakes.

The spinner said Pant was just 19-20 years of age at the time but was under immense pressure to perform well and play like Dhoni. However, his teammates supported him during the rough phase and help him emerge as a champion.

"Actually, everyone wanted him (Pant) to be like Mahi bhai. The way MSD was behind the stumps. I remember if Pant would ever drop any catch or the DRS went wrong, then the whole ground would start shouting 'Mahi Mahi'," Chahal told SGTV.

"So, there was a lot of pressure on that child (Pant)… because he was only around 19 or 20 years old at that time. We would tell him to ignore all these things and focus on your game. He was under tremendous pressure...then he was also out of the team for a while," he added.

Chahal was part of the Indian side when Pant made his international debut in 2017. The young left-hander has since come a long way and is currently India's first-choice wicket-keeper batsman heading into the T20 World Cup 2021. Pant is also leading the Delhi Capitals in the ongoing IPL 2021 and has led his side to the playoffs.

Chahal hailed Pant's remarkable rise and credited him for improving a lot in the last couple of years. He also urged fans to respect cricketers a little more as each player tries to give his best on the field.

"He made a superb comeback. He has improved a lot; he has shown a lot of maturity. His performance has been really good and I guess people should understand that when a sportsperson is on the ground, he tries his best, and nobody wants to perform badly. People should give a little respect to the player," Chahal said.

"Bowlers are now getting good help from Pant being behind the stumps. See, there is no replacement for any player. There can be no replacement for Mahi bhai. Pant is trying his best to do better and better. No need to do comparisons," he added.

'Everyone wanted him to be like MS Dhoni': Yuzvendra Chahal recalls Rishabh Pant's initial struggles

The IPL 2021 edition is nearing its conclusion as we head to the playoffs, from Sunday (October 10). For the unversed, the Delhi Capitals (DC), Chennai Super Kings (CSK), Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) and Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) ended as the top-four sides in the league stage as the competition will now get more intense.

The stage is set for a blockbuster finish as two out of the four teams will look to clinch their maiden title whereas the experienced CSK and KKR unit will try to add another trophy to their respective cabinets.

Talking about the Delhi unit, they have reaped rewards post their revamp after the 2018 season. From 2008-2018, Delhi had reached the playoffs only on three occasions. Since 2019, DC have made it to the last four every single time; also playing their first-ever final last year. As they look to go a step ahead and win their first-ever IPL trophy, WION News' Aditya Sahay had a chat with DC's assistant coach and former Indian wicketkeeper-batsman Ajay Ratra on Rishabh Pant's captaincy, Ricky Ponting-led Delhi camp's astute coaching staff and the one-time runners-up having the wood over CSK in 2021.

Q1) DC will enter the Qualifier 1 by having a 2-0 lead over MS Dhoni-led Chennai Super Kings (CSK); also beating them at the same venue just a few days. Though one needs to start afresh and everyday throws a new challenge, do you think DC having the wood over the experienced CSK line-up will help in the first Qualifier?

Yes, we have beaten CSK twice this season. It is definitely a good feeling beating a very good team like Chennai. You get a lot of confidence and the other team does feel the heat. Having said that, whatever our plans and strategies we have in-line, we need to execute them once again on the particular day to emerge on top.

Q2) Playing brilliant cricket in IPL 2020, DC were outfoxed by the experienced MI in the final. As the franchise is aiming to enter their second successive final, and emerge on top, how has the entire coaching and support staff worked with the players to help them grow from the missed opportunities in IPL 2020?

We have five coaches altogether, headed by Ricky Ponting. We have a very good understanding and communication. There are specific coaches for specific roles. It might look on field that lot of things happen on the 22-yard cricket strip by players, but there are a lot of planning and strategies happen behind-the-door or from the backend.

There have been occasions in this season where we have fielded only three overseas players but still won. We are performing as a team. It has been a complete team performance as we aren't relying on certain individuals. Performances are coming from all corners. Ponting is very communicative with the players and in that way, we have an edge (over others). Players are prepared to be mentally tough under someone like Punter.

Q3) The discussion might have been a lengthy one regarding who should captain DC in the final leg. How has Pant been as captain according to you? Mention one quality of him as a young leader, who is looking to change DC's fortunes this time around.

This is the first time that Pant is leading in the IPL. He has led in the Delhi team in the past but leading an IPL team is a different ball-game. In Rishabh's case, he is quite clear on what he wants to do. It might not seem logical from the outside, but he goes with his instincts and backs himself. Every decision has pros and cons. But in his case, he is very clear. Ofcourse, he's in the growing stage but will get better with each match. The more he plays as captain, the better he will get.

Rishabh Pant-led Delhi Capitals (DC) became the second team to confirm a playoffs spot in IPL 2021. On Monday (October 4), the Pant-led DC franchise locked horns with MS Dhoni-led Chennai Super Kings (CSK), at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium, Dubai, and completed a double over the Yellow Army this season to not only add two more vital points up their sleeves but also confirm a top-two finish in the points table.

Opting to bowl first, Delhi reduced CSK to 62-4 after a promising start by their openers Ruturaj Gaikwad and Faf du Plessis. However, Anrich Nortje and Axar Patel pulled things back for Delhi as Chennai never recovered from thereon. Riding on Ambati Rayudu's unbeaten 55, CSK posted a modest 136-5 in 20 overs. While Pant & Co. complicated the run-chase for themselves, they finished the proceedings in the final over with 3 wickets in hand.

Assuring themselves of a top-two finish with CSK win, DC players enjoyed some time off before the playoffs begin from next week. The official Twitter handle of the IPL 2020's runners-up shared some pictures of the players relaxing before they square off with Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in their last game from the league stage. Pant & Co. will not like to lose steam in their final group stage encounter and enter the playoffs as the top-ranked side. After missing out on winning their maiden title in IPL 2020, DC will be desperate to clinch the trophy this time around in the second and final leg of IPL 14, in the UAE.

IPL 2021: Rishabh Pant-led DC enjoy time-off after assuring top-two finish with CSK win

Match 50 of the IPL 2021 edition saw the MS Dhoni-led Chennai Super Kings (CSK) face the Rishabh Pant-led Delhi Capitals (DC) in a bid to ensure a top-two finish with a win. While the contest went down the wire, Pant & Co. emerged on top to complete a double over the three-time champions this season and assure themselves of a top-two finish; getting an extra chance to enter the final.

On the other hand, CSK's batting was a huge letdown as none of them got going as the Yellow Army posted a modest 136-5, being asked to bat first, courtesy Ambati Rayudu's 55*. The likes of Ruturaj Gaikwad, Moeen Ali and Faf du Plessis couldn't do much whereas Dhoni played an uninspiring 27-ball 18. While the CSK bowlers took the game deep, with Shardul Thakur and Ravindra Jadeja returning with two wickets apiece, Chennai lost the game in the last over by 3 wickets.

Delhi Capitals (DC) spinner R Ashwin was involved in an ugly spat with Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) skipper Eoin Morgan and pace Tim Southee in the clash between the two sides in IPL 2021 last week. The heated argument took place after Ashwin ran an extra run in the game when the ball deflected after a throw hit Pant, who was batting in the middle with the spinner.

Ashwin running for an extra un off the deflection did not go down well with KKR players as Morgan and Southee both had a heated exchange with Ashwin after the spinner was dismissed in the final over of DC's innings. The spat between Ashwin and Morgan took an ugly turn after the KKR captain termed Ashwin's act of taking the extra run 'disgraceful', igniting the 'spirit of cricket debate' once again.

While several former cricketers backed Ashwin as he was within the rules to take the extra run, some slammed the Delhi Capitals spinner for his action. Ashwin himself had shared a long thread on Twitter, lashing out at Morgan and Southee while explaining his side of the story. Now, batting legend Gavaskar has shared his views on the incident and said it is unfair to blame Ashwin. The former India captain questioned why nobody is asking Pant why did he take the run when the ball had hit him.

"What nobody asked is, why did Pant run? He was the one who was struck by the ball and if at all anybody should have known that the tradition is not to take the run after the ball is deflected, then it was the Delhi skipper. Maybe, in the heat of the battle and the anxiety to add runs to the team’s total, he took that extra run," Gavaskar wrote in his column for Mid-Day.

Gavaskar further stated that Pant could have stepped in at the time and tried to defuse the situation when Morgan and Ashwin were having a go at each other. However, the batting legend insisted that it is not easy to control emotions when playing in the scorching heat of the UAE.

"But why blame Ashwin? He may not have even seen the ball hitting his skipper as he would be intent on getting to his end and may have only seen the ball that was away from a fielder and so responded for the extra run. Pant could have stepped in and defused the situation, but in the intensity of the battle and especially in the hot and humid desert atmosphere, it is extremely tough to keep a cool head, so he may have not realised what had happened," Gavaskar added.

IPL 2021: Rishabh Pant-led DC complete a double over MS Dhoni's CSK with 3-wicket win, ensure top-two finish

Rishabh Pant turned 24 on Monday (October 4). The young Indian wicketkeeper-batsman had a lot of noise when he broke into the scene in the IPL for Team Delhi (then known as the Delhi Daredevils). Soon, he made his debut for Team India and got some success but endured a lean phase post the 2019 ODI World Cup.

However, things changed for the young keeper-batsman when he replaced Wriddhiman Saha in India's Test side during the Australia series Down Under in late 2020. Since then, the swashbuckling left-hander has been in rollicking form across formats and has also improved significantly behind the stumps. As he turns 24, former England spinner Graeme Swann and Australia's ex all-rounder Shane Watson lavished praise on Pant.

'He's got a decade of top-level cricket' - Graeme Swann lavishes praise on DC skipper Rishabh Pant as he turns 24

Former India batsman Virender Sehwag is back at his witty best as he continues to entertain fans with his funny pre and post-match analysis in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2021. Sehwag posted a video on social media ahead of the much-awaited clash between Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Delhi Capitals (DC) in Dubai on Monday (September 03) where he spoke about Pant's brilliant leadership this season.

Pant has been absolutely fantastic in his debut season as the captain of the Delhi Capitals, who have already sealed a spot in the playoffs. DC had reached the final last season and will be hoping to go the distance under Pant's captaincy this year. The 24-year-old had replaced an injured Shreyas Iyer as the captain of the side ahead of the start of the season but was retained despite the former captain's return from injury ahead of the UAE leg of the tournament.

Pant, who considers Dhoni as one of his cricketing idols, had led his side to victory against Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in their opening game of the season. Pant will be up against Dhoni once again when CSK and DC will lock horns in Dubai on Sunday. CSK and DC are currently occupying the top two spots on the points table and the top spot will be on the line in the much-anticipated clash.

Ahead of the start of the game, Sehwag heaped praise on Pant and recalled a famous dialogue from the Bollywood movie 'War' to state that Pant has gone ahead of his teacher - Dhoni in IPL now.

"Today's match is between Delhi and Chennai. Sometimes, seeing Pant's innovation, Dhoni must be saying, (Sehwag shared Hrithik Roshan's meme from War movie) 'Woh kabhi mera student hua karta tha ab shaayd wo apne teacher se aage nikal gaya hai.' (He was my student once upon a time but now he has left his teacher behind.)

Happy Birthday Rishabh Pant: Reliving five most memorable moments in his cricketing career

Team India's star wicket-keeper batsman Rishabh Pant is celebrating his 24th birthday on Monday (October 04). The Delhi Capitals (DC) skipper has been enjoying a stellar campaign in his debut season as the captain of the franchise and has already helped them to seal a spot in the playoffs in IPL 2021. Pant's DC are currently placed second on the points table with 18 points from 12 matches so far.

Not just on the IPL front but Pant has also enjoyed a fruitful year with the Indian cricket team across formats. From being ousted of the limited-overs formats last year to cementing his spot as the first-choice keeper-batsman across all formats, Pant has come a long way in 2021, in what has been a defining year for him.

Pant became a regular across all three formats after his impressive show in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2020-21 against Australia, which paved his way for a comeback in limited-overs. He has not looked back since and has been terrific as a leader of DC in IPL 2021 as well.

Wishes poured in from all corners as a number of his Indian teammates, former cricketers and other players took to Twitter to wish the 24-year-old on his birthday. KKR wicket-keeper Dinesh Karthik came up with a cheeky wish, referring to an incident between him and Pant in his side's clash against DC this season where he was almost hit by the birthday boy while collecting a ball after his miscued shot.

"Happiest birthday to the one and only @RishabhPant17. An advice to all keepers, stay a foot away from the stump when he's batting," Karthik wrote in a tweet while sharing a picture of the incident.

Pant's Delhi Capitals will be up against MS Dhoni-led Chennai Super Kings in their 13th match of IPL 2021 season on his birthday on Monday. Both teams have already qualified for the playoffs and the top spot on the points table will be on the line when they lock horns against each other. Both CSK and DC have 18 points each from 12 games so far but Dhoni's men are on the top on the basis of a superior net run rate.

Both CSK and DC have 18 points each from 12 games so far but Dhoni's men are on the top on the basis of a superior net run rate.

'Stay a foot away when he is batting': Dinesh Karthik comes up with cheeky wish for Rishabh Pant on his 24th birthday

The IPL 2021 edition has entered the business end with only 11 games left in the group stages before the playoffs commence. Match 46 will see the five-time winners and defending champions Rohit Sharma-led Mumbai Indians (MI) face the second-ranked Rishabh Pant-led Delhi Capitals (DC) at the Sharjah Cricket Stadium, Sharjah on Saturday afternoon (October 2).

Both sides are entering the game with different agendas. While the MI franchise have struggled with back-to-back losses before reviving their campaign to an extend with a win over the Punjab Kings (PBKS), they still have a long way to go before finalising a spot in the last-four. They need to win all games and, thus, will come hard versus the DC camp.

DC, on the other hand, are now assured of the playoffs spot. However, they need to keep winning in order to remain in the top-two. They will be eager to get back to winning ways after a 3-wicket loss versus the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in their previous outing.

Match prediction: Run-making hasn't been easy at Sharjah in this season. Hence, both sides will continue to chase the 'winning totals' in match 46. In terms of head-to-head, MI lead DC 16-13 and were also unbeaten versus the opposition during IPL 2020. Nonetheless, DC will be playing their second game on the trot at Sharjah and, thus, are expected to learn from their mistakes and smartly apply themselves in the middle; something they didn't do versus KKR.

Given that MI have still not looked at their best, and are dealing with batting woes in the powerplays and death overs, DC still have an edge ahead of their face-off with MI. However, MI can take much confidence from the overall encounters versus Delhi to earn their second successive win.

Match 46 of the IPL 2021 edition will see two teams with contrasting fortunes lock horns with each other. Rishabh Pant-led Delhi Capitals (DC) will meet the defending champions and five-time winners Rohit Sharma-led Mumbai Indians (MI) at the Sharjah Cricket Stadium. While the Pant-led side have now qualified for the playoffs, for the third season in a row, they will not like to take things lightly and look to end at the top-two in the points table.

On the other hand, Rohit-led MI still have lots of work to do despite their 6-wicket win over Punjab Kings (PBKS) in their last outing. With the likes of Kolkata Knight Riders and PBKS still fighting for the fourth-spot, MI need to win all their remaining games for qualifications else at 14 points they might miss out on a last-four finish.

It will be interesting to see if the MI middle and lower-order can once again contribute like they did in the game vs PBKS. On the other hand, DC have been hit by injuries of Marcus Stoinis and Prithvi Shaw. Hence, their team combination versus MI will keep their fans on the edge of their seats before the toss.

IPL 2021: MI skipper Rohit Sharma 'disappointed' after DC loss, says team 'struggled' with batting this season

Match 41 of the IPL 2021 edition saw the Rishabh Pant-led Delhi Capitals (DC) lock horns with the two-time winners Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) at Sharjah. While the DC franchise were favourites to win versus Eoin Morgan & Co., they conceded a three-wicket win to the KKR line-up in defence of a modest 128.

Though the IPL 2020 runners-up fought hard and gave their all, KKR managed to edge past them courtesy vital knocks from Shubman Gill, Sunil Narine and Nitish Rana. The clash, however, gained eyeballs for the heated exchange between R Ashwin and KKR captain Morgan. After Ashwin sneaked in another run when the ball ricocheted off his partner Pant, it didn't please bowler Tim Southee and Morgan.

Following his dismissal, Ashwin was, thus, caught in an altercation with Morgan and Southee as Dinesh Karthik played the peace-maker. After all this, former KKR captain opened up on the whole episode and told at the press conference, "I know that Rahul Tripathi threw the ball and it hit Rishabh Pant and then it ricocheted of that and Ashwin started to run. I do not think Morgan appreciates that, he is someone when the ball hits the batter, he expects them not to run because of the spirit of cricket."

As the episode as once again led to the never-ending talks around the 'Spirit of Cricket', former Indian opener-turned-commentator Virender Sehwag also reacted on the same. He took a jibe at England's limited-overs and KKR captain Morgan and tweeted, "On July 14th , 2019 when it ricocheted of Ben Stokes' bat in the final over, Mr. Morgan sat on a dharna outside Lord’s and refused to hold the World Cup trophy and New Zealand won. Haina? Bade aaye, ‘Doesn’t appreciate’ waale."

IPL 2021: Virender Sehwag takes a dig at Eoin Morgan following KKR captain's heated exchange with R Ashwin

Since Virat Kohli announced that he will be stepping down as the skipper of Team India's T20 captain after the upcoming ICC T20 World Cup, scheduled in the UAE and Oman from October 17 to November 14, speculations have been made over who should lead the team next.

As the Indian cricket board is yet to decide a name, critics have been suggesting players for the captaincy role with swashbuckling opener Rohit Sharma as the top contender.

But batting great Sunil Gavaskar believes Rohit should lead India in the next two World Cups, the one in UAE, and also the next one in 2022.

Gavaskar, who had previously also suggested Rohit's name as India's future T20 captain, added two more names to his list to consider for vice-captain role.

He said Rohit should be India's captain in the next two T20 World Cups. "I think (of) Rohit Sharma (as captain) for the next two World Cups," Gavaskar said on the Star Sports show 'Cricket Connected'.

Gavaskar added, "You could say they (World Cups) are back-to-back, one starting in a month and another exactly a year from now. So clearly, yes, you don't want to change too many captains at this particular stage.

"Rohit Sharma would definitely be my choice for captaincy of the Indian team for both these T20 World Cups."

Rohit led India to victory in the Nidahas Trophy T20 tournament and Asia Cup in 2018, which was played in the ODI format.

He is also the most successful captain in the history of IPL with five trophies to his name for the Mumbai Indians.

Gavaskar had previously tossed in another name while commenting on the future leadership role in T20Is as he said that KL Rahul is captaincy material again said that he looks at Rahul for "vice-captain".

The 2020 edition of the T20 World Cup in Australia, which was cancelled due to the global pandemic, is slated to be played next year.

Match 41 of the IPL 2021 UAE leg will see the in-form Rishabh Pant-led Delhi Capitals (DC) face the two-time winners Eoin Morgan-led Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR). The clash is expected to go down the wire as both sides have looked good in the second and final leg of IPL 14.

While the KKR franchise were down and in the bottom-half of the points table when the UAE leg commenced, they have won two out of three games. Their previous game brought an end to their two-match winning streak, however, they lost on the final ball of the match versus MS Dhoni-led Chennai Super Kings (CSK). On the other hand, the DC franchise seem to have all bases covered and are moving ahead very strongly in the tournament. They comfortably moved past Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) and Rajasthan Royals (RR) since this year's IPL resumed in the UAE.

DC vs KKR, IPL 2021 prediction today: Who will win Delhi Capitals vs Kolkata Knight Riders match?

Delhi Capitals (DC) suffered their first defeat of the UAE leg of the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2021 on Tuesday (September 28). Kolkata Knight Riders chase down the target of 128 runs comfortably at the Sharjah Cricket Stadium in Sharjah to hand end DC's four-match unbeaten streak in the tournament.

The match witnessed some heated moments between the two sides as R Ashwin was involved in an on-field face-off with KKR pacer Tim Southee. While tempers flared during Ashwin's stay in the middle, DC's innings also saw a hilarious moment on the field when captain Rishabh Pant almost knocked off KKR wicket-keeper Dinesh Karthik's head.

The incident happened during the 17th over of DC's innings when Pant was batting in the middle. The left-hander tried to play a reverse slog against spinner Varun Chakravarthy but ended up missing the ball. The ball instead hit his back leg and was about to hit the stumps when Pant tried to stop it.

Pant swat his bat trying to stop the ball from hitting the stumps and ended up almost hitting Karthik in the process. Karthik, who was coming to collect the ball, escaped by inches and avoided what could have resulted in a serious injury had the bat hit his helmet.

Match 41 of the IPL 2021 edition saw the in-form Rishabh Pant-led Delhi Capitals (DC) lock horns with the two-time winners Kolkata Knight Riders at the Sharjah Cricket Stadium, Sharjah on Tuesday (September 28). In the low-scoring encounter, KKR managed to emerge on top of the DC franchise by 3 wickets -- in pursuit of 128 -- to pick up two vital points.

While Pant-led DC lost the encounter, the IPL 2020 runners-up remain in the top-two in the overall standings. For the skipper Pant, it was a decent game as he made a sedate 36-ball 39 and rotated the bowlers to make it tough for the Kolkata franchise. However, the 23-year-old achieved an elite feat during the match; surpassing Virender Sehwag to make Delhi franchise's leading run-scorer of all-time.

Match 41 will see one of the title-contenders in Rishabh Pant-led Delhi Capitals (DC) face Eoin Morgan's Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in IPL 2021, on Tuesday (September 28). For the unversed, this will be an afternoon game as there are two matches lined-up for the day.

Talking about the form of both sides, DC are moving ahead -- or rather storming -- into the playoffs with back-to-back wins. The 2020 runners-up are at the second position and will reclaim the top spot if they emerge on top of two-time winners KKR at Sharjah. Thus, the Pant-led franchise will start as favourites against the KKR line-up.

On the other hand, KKR have shown remarkable improvement since the UAE leg commenced. Their batters are playing with more freedom whereas their bowling has enough variety for the pitches on offer in the UAE. Hence, they won't give anything easily to the DC outfit. A close contest is expected between both sides. Their last face-off at the venue saw DC beat KKR by 18 runs in a high-scoring thriller in IPL 2020.

Prithvi Shaw, Shreyas Iyer, Pant, Kagiso Rabada, Anrich Nortje, Sunil Narine, Venkatesh Iyer, Varun Chakravarthy and Rahul Tripathi will be some of the players to watch out for.

Indian skipper Virat Kohli is all set to step down as the T20 captain of the Men in Blue post the conclusion of the upcoming T20 World Cup 2021 in UAE this year. Kohli had announced his decision to step down as T20 captain ahead of the start of the ongoing second leg of IPL 2021 in UAE. He will be also stepping down as the captain of his IPL franchise Royal Challengers Bangalore after the end of the current season.

Kohli was appointed India's captain across all three formats in 2017, taking over from former captain MS Dhoni. Under him, India have won some memorable series both at home and overseas and also made it to the semi-final of the 2019 ODI World Cup, and the final of the World Test Championship earlier this year. However, India are yet to win a major ICC trophy under Kohli.

With back-to-back T20 World Cups set to be staged in 2021 and 2022, Kohli has decided to continue as a pure batsman in the shortest format while leading the team in ODIs and Tests. BCCI is yet to announce India's next T20I captain with Rohit Sharma likely to take over from Kohli.

Legendary batsman and former India captain Sunil Gavaskar has picked Rohit Sharma as the ideal replacement for Kohli while naming KL Rahul and Rishabh Pant as potential candidates to become the Indian team's next vice-captain in T20Is. Rohit is currently India's vice-captain in T20Is and ODIs.

Chasing the modest target of 135, Delhi Capitals wrapped the game in 17.5 overs with Shikhar Dhawan (42), Shreyas Iyer (47 not out) and Rishabh Pant (35 not out) scoring runs.

During the post-match presentation, Pant said, "We discussed that we had a good first phase, and we are happy to start the second phase this way. We said the same thing about focusing on the process and giving it 100% every day."

"It's a good bowling performance because we thought 150-160 would have been a good total, so 130-something was a good score to restrict them to. We have one of the quickest bowlers in the world so I think they're great assets to have," he added.

Delhi Capitals now sit at the top of the points table while Sunrisers Hyderabad remain at the bottom. Pant also hailed the bowlers as "assets" as after a stunning performance produced by the bowling unit, DC claimed an eight-wicket victory over SRH as bowlers restricted the opposition at 134 in 20 overs. IPL 2021: Rishabh Pant 'happy' to start second phase with a win over Sunrisers Hyderabad

Delhi Capitals (DC) surprised one and all when they retained Rishabh Pant as the captain for the remainder of IPL 2021, ahead of the UAE leg's commencement. While the franchise might have done it to maintain continuity and also as they were on top of the points table under Pant's captaincy in the first leg, many thought Shreyas Iyer would reclaim the captaincy spot after being fully fit and available for the final leg, which is underway in UAE at present.

However, Iyer has no qualms of the fact of not leading DC franchise and finally reacted on playing under Pant after DC's 8-wicket win over Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in match 33 of IPL 14, on Wednesday (September 22).

“When I got the captaincy, I was in a different frame of mind. My decision-making and temperament level was really good. It really helped in the last two years. But obviously, this is part of the decision-making from the franchise. I respect the decision they have made to continue with him (Pant) as captain,” said the right-handed batsman in the press conference after the match.

Iyer added, "As for Rishabh Pant, he is leading really well from the start of the season. That’s why the decision-makers took the call to let him continue till the end of the season. I completely respect it. There is no drastic change as such and it isn’t like I am focusing even more than before on my batting. As captain, I like to soak in the pressure. With pressure comes challenges, and my mindset is such that I perform well in pressure situations."

Talking about DC's first game in the UAE leg, Pant-starrer restricted SRH for a moderate 134-9, riding on Anrich Nortje's 2 for 12 and Kagiso Rabada's 3-fer. In reply, Shikhar Dhawan's 41 and Iyer-Pant's unbeaten 67-run third-wicket stand took DC past the finish line, in 17.5 overs with the loss of only two wickets. Iyer remained unbeaten on 47 whereas Pant slammed an unbeaten 35, off 21 balls.

With this win, DC top the points table with 7 wins from 9 encounters.
