Rohit Sharma had been recently appointed as the vice-captain of the Indian Test team, replacing senior batter Ajinkya Rahane ahead of the upcoming tour of South Africa. However, Rohit is now set to miss the three-match series following a hamstring injury. He picked up the injury while practising in Mumbai ahead of the Test series.

India A batter Priyank Panchal has been named Rohit's replacement for the three-match rubber as the Hitman faces a race against time to recover for the three ODIs that will be preceded by the Test series. India are scheduled to play three Tests as many ODIs on their tour of South Africa which gets underway from December 26.

While the BCCI has confirmed Panchal will be his replacement, it is not certain who will be taking over as the vice-captain of the team in his absence. Rahane is unlikely to be handed over the vice-captaincy role after being replaced and a younger player might get a chance to be Kohli's deputy in the series.

Here is a look at players who can replace Rohit Sharma as vice-captain for the South Africa Test series:

1) Rishabh Pant

One of the best performers for India with the bat in Test cricket over the last couple of years, Pant has finally cemented his spot in the Indian team across formats. He played numerous memorable knocks for India on their tour of Australia in 2020-21 to help them win the Border-Gavaskar Trophy for a second time in the row under Ajinkya Rahane. Pant also led Delhi Capitals to the playoffs in IPL 2021 and has done well as a captain. He can be a perfect fit for the vice-captain's role in order to be groomed as one of the future leaders of the Indian team in the longest format.

2) Jasprit Bumrah

One of the few members of the current Indian squad, who is a regular across all three formats, Jasprit Bumrah has been a consistent performer for the team ever since making his international debut in 2016. He will be one of the strongest contenders to be Virat Kohli's deputy for the South Africa series. Gifted with a great cricketing brain and exceptional skills, Bumrah has been a mainstay for Team India and has matured into a fine leader of the pace attack. With countries going against the idea of not handing over leadership roles to bowlers, Bumrah can be a perfect choice for vice-captaincy.

3) KL Rahul

KL Rahul can be an obvious choice considering he is also Rohit Sharma's deputy in limited-overs cricket. Rahul has been in and out of the Test team for a while now but can be a regular member of the playing XI in the South Africa Tests considering Rohit's injury and Rahane's poor form. Cheteshwar Pujara has also struggled of late which can open the door for Rahul's inclusion in the XI and he can be made Kohli's deputy in the longest format. He has also led Punjab Kings in the IPL for two seasons and is likely to lead whichever team he joins ahead of IPL 2022.

Three players who can replace Rohit Sharma as India's Test vice-captain for South Africa series

The year 2021 was filled with plenty of cricketing action. The calendar year saw the inaugural ICC World Test Championship (WTC) final being held, where Kane Williamson-led New Zealand won the title. Apart from that, there were plenty of action and drama which came from the purest format, in the form of India-England Tests (both men's and women's), India vs Australia Tests (both in men's and women's), Pakistan-Bangladesh series, Sri Lanka-West Indies series, etc.

With the year coming to an end, former Indian opener-turned-commentator Aakash Chopra picked his Test team of 2021. Chopra's team included some star-studded names and comprises four Indians. However, Captain Virat Kohli found no mention in his line-up.

For the unversed, Kohli didn't have a great year with the bat. While he led India with aplomb in the England series (both home and away) and a series win over New Zealand at home, he failed to cross the triple-figure mark and amassed only 483 runs, with four fifties, at 28.41. Hence, Chopra's list included Rohit Sharma (India's highest run-getter in 2021), Rishabh Pant, R Ashwin and Axar Patel.

Rohit compiled 906 runs, at 47.68, and is the second-highest run-getter overall. Ashwin leads the list of most wickets in Tests in the calendar year (52 scalps) whereas Axar accounted for 36 wickets (fourth overall). Pant, on the other hand, scored 706 runs with five fifties and one hundred (second-most by an Indian) and also showed vast improvement a a keeper. Both Pant and Ashwin have a chance to better their numbers in India's only Test remaining in 2021; i.e. the South Africa Test series opener in Centurion on December 26. Meanwhile, Rohit and Axar have been ruled out of action due to injury concerns.

Speaking about the top-order, Chopra's XI comprised Rohit, Sri Lanka captain Dimuth Karunaratne, Joe Root and NZ's skipper Williamson.

He said in a video on his YouTube channel, "The first name coming to my mind is Rohit Sharma. It was a huge year for him, it was the year in which he fell in love with the longest format. He played amazing knocks, whether it was the century in Chennai and the consistent performances in England. My second opener is Sri Lanka's Dimuth Karunaratne. He has also made runs which also includes a double century. He was playing well against West Indies also. He might not be too pleasing on the eye but scores runs.".

"There was no contest at No.3. Joe Root is part of this team. He is the best Test batter of 2021, miles above the rest. He is just in a different league altogether. He gave amazing performances, whether it was the double century in India or Sri Lanka. At No.4, I have got Williamson. He scored a double century against Pakistan and he won his team the final. He played a very important knock in the final as well. Kane Williamson is also the captain of this team," Chopra further asserted.

For the middle-order, Chopra named Fawad Alam, Pant, Ashwin and Axar. "My team has Fawad Alam. It is a story of persistence, that he will keep on playing whether you select him or not. He has made runs, the noticeable performances being 109 against South Africa, 140 against Zimbabwe and 124 against West Indies. The keeper is Rishabh Pant. I was thinking about Jos Buttler as well but no one was close to him. The sort of performances Rishabh Pant has given - 101 against England, 89 at Gabba and a ninety in Sydney as well. He has been very very good."

"After that, I am picking two Indians (including Axar). Ravichandran Ashwin - he has taken a lot of wickets. He was brilliant in India against England. He made a century against England as well. He is the no.1 spinner in Test cricket, there is no doubt about it."

For the rest of the line-up, Chopra shared his picks and said, "I have picked two fast bowlers apart from Jamieson. Jimmy Anderson - he took 32 wickets this year. He did well in India, took a five-wicket haul in Sri Lanka and did well against India again at home. Last but not the least, I have got Shaheen Afridi. His performances this year have been very good. He was also taking five-wicket hauls like Axar. It will also give a left-armer, he is tall, pitches the ball up and makes it swing," he concluded.

Former Indian opener names Rohit Sharma-starrer Test XI of 2021, no room for Virat Kohli

Ravi Shastri's tenure as Team India's head coach ended with the national side's exit from the T20 World Cup, in the UAE. Under Shastri, India achieved wholesome success across formats but couldn't end their eight-year-long ICC-title drought.

In Tests, Shastri guided India to the No. 1 rankings and the WTC final. In limited-overs, India won bilateral series in SENA countries, won bilateral ODIs in South Africa, New Zealand and Australia, dominated at home and reached the semi-finals of the 2019 ODI World Cup.

Recently, Shastri spilled the beans on various aspects in Indian cricket during his tenure as the head coach, from mid-2017 to late 2021. During his interaction, he opened up on Ambati Rayudu's controversial omission from the CWC'19 squad.

"I had no say in that. But I wasn't okay with three wicketkeepers being picked for the World Cup. Either Ambati or Shreyas could've come in. What was the logic in having MS Dhoni, Rishabh and Dinesh all together? But I never interfered with the selectors' work, except when I was asked for feedback or as part of a general discussion," Shastri told the Times of India.

To this, former selector and spinner Sarandeep Singh -- who was part of the MSK Prasad-led selection committee who named the WC squad -- has reacted and slammed Shastri's comments. "All the three wicket-keepers are very good as batsmen. A selector does not interfere in selection. Rishabh Pant was selected when Shikhar Dhawan got injured during the World Cup. We already had an opener in KL Rahul," Sarandeep Singh told ANI.

He further asserted, "So, we were looking for someone to come and bat in the middle order and play big shots. This is the reason why Rishabh Pant was in the team. But to pick playing eleven is team management's call. The selection committee does not interfere in it. In the 2019 World Cup if you are looking at selection of Rishabh Pant then he was not their first choice. MS Dhoni and Dinesh Karthik were in the team and we were winning all the matches. We even topped the table. But suddenly with these things coming, it is upsetting for us because we did our job fairly."

He added, "We travelled all the time, we saw domestic matches in which batsmen, bowlers or all-rounders are doing well. There is nothing like that we never share anything and we just have things on the table and we say that this is the team. The captain is also sitting in the meeting all the time."

India played the semi-finals of the CWC'19 versus New Zealand and lost the thrilling contest by 18 runs at Old Trafford, Manchester.

At present, Kohli has been removed as the limited-overs captain and replaced by Rohit Sharma. Team India is gearing up for their tour of South Africa, comprising three ODIs and Tests each. Under new coach Rahul Dravid, India will play their tour opener on December 26, in Centurion, with the Test series set to be held first.

Australia thrashed England by 9 wickets in the series-opener of Ashes 2021-22 at The Gabba on Saturday (December 11) to take a 1-0 lead in the high-profile series between the two arch-rivals. It was a dominant performance from the hosts in Brisbane as they bundled out England for a paltry 147 in the first innings before posting a huge total of 425 runs on the board in reply.

England could only manage 297 runs in their second innings and suffered yet another batting collapse on Day 4 of the first Test at The Gabba on Saturday. The visitors handed a target of mere 20 runs to the Aussies, who won with nine wickets to spare to take lead in the series. While the likes of David Warner and Nathan Lyon were the star performers for Australia, wicket-keeper batter Alex Carey also had a memorable outing on Test debut.

Carey, who was playing his maiden Test in the Ashes 2021-22 opener at The Gabba, achieved the feat of taking the most number of catches on Test debut. He took a total of eight catches in the game to break the record of Indian wicket-keeper Rishabh Pant, who had taken seven catches on his Test debut against England in 2018.

Carey also left behind the likes of Australia's Brian Taber and England's Chris Read, who both had seven catches each to their names on their respective Test debuts. After managing only 12 runs in the first innings, Carrey was sent to open the batting for Australia in the second innings with the host needing only 20 runs to win. He scored 9 runs before getting dismissed by Ollie Robinson as Australia wrapped up a dominant victory by nine wickets.

Australian spinner Nathan Lyon also achieved the milestone of 400 Test wickets as he brought an end to a long wait with a four-wicket haul in England's second innings at The Gabba. The spinner had gone wicket-less in the first innings but returned to pick up the wickets of Dawid Malan, Ollie Pope, Mark Wood and Robinon to reah 403 wickets in 101 Test matches so far in his career.

Ashes: Alex Carey breaks Rishabh Pant's record, scripts elusive feat on Test debut against England

Rohit Sharma has replaced Virat Kohli as Team India's white-ball captain ahead of the team's tour of South Africa later this month. It will be the beginning of a new era for the Indian team under Rohit's leadership with a T20 World Cup and an ODI World Cup lined up in the next two years.

The move to replace Kohli as ODI captain came as a surprise to many as the Indian batter had made it clear in October this year that he is keen to lead the national team in Tests and ODIs after reliving the T20 captaincy. However, his captaincy stint in limited-overs cricket was cut short by BCCI, who opted for one captain for white-ball cricket.

While the move has drawn mixed reactions from fans and former cricketers, it remains to be seen who will take over the vice-captaincy spot in ODIs left vacant by Rohit after he was elevated to captaincy. BCCI is yet to announce India's vice-captain in ODIs ahead of the South Africa tour. Here is a look at three top candidates for vice-captaincy -

1) KL Rahul

KL Rahul was appointed as Rohit Sharma's deputy for his first T20I series as full-time captain of the Indian team against New Zealand at home. Rahul is favourite to take over as vice-captain in ODIs as well. He is one of the few players who is a regular in both ODIs and T20Is for India and has been a consistent performer with the bat. He also has the experience of leading Punjab Kings for two seasons in the Indian Premier League.

2) Rishabh Pant

India's first-choice wicket-keeper in white-ball cricket, Rishabh Pant can also be a good fit as a vice-captain looking ahead. Pant has been exceptional in Tests recently and has also cemented his spot in both ODIs and T20Is. He led Delhi Capitals to the playoffs in IPL 2021 and has been maturing as a leader. He can be groomed for a future leadership role as Rohit's deputy in ODIs at present.

3) Shreyas Iyer

Shreyas Iyer has been around the Indian setup for a while now as far as ODIs and T20Is are concerned. Though he was not part of the T20 World Cup 2021's main squad, he is seen as a vital cog in India's batting line-up and has proved his leadership qualities at Delhi Capitals in the IPL. Iyer was the first and the only captain to lead Delhi Capitals to the final of the IPL. He can be an ideal deputy to Rohit in the fifty-over format.

Here is a look at three top candidates for vice-captaincy - 1) KL Rahul KL Rahul was appointed as Rohit Sharma's deputy for his first T20I series as full-time captain of the Indian team against New Zealand at home. Rahul is favourite to take over as vice-captain in ODIs as well. He is one of the few players who is a regular in both ODIs and T20Is for India and has been a consistent performer with the bat. He also has the experience of leading Punjab Kings for two seasons in the Indian Premier League. 2) Rishabh Pant India's first-choice wicket-keeper in white-ball cricket, Rishabh Pant can also be a good fit as a vice-captain looking ahead. Also Read: 3 reasons why Rohit Sharma's appointment as ODI captain can be a good move for Team India 3) Shreyas Iyer Shreyas Iyer has been around the Indian setup for a while now as far as ODIs and T20Is are concerned.

3 players who can become India's vice-captain after Rohit Sharma replaces Virat Kohli as ODI skipper

Team India is going through rapid changes post the T20 World Cup. Well, it was a given following how disappointing the campaign turned out to be for the one-time winners.

On Wednesday (December 8), BCCI announced Rohit Sharma as the new ODI captain, after he had already taken over as the T20I captain post the World Cup. As per reports, Virat Kohli was given two days to announce his stepping down but since the right-hander didn't respond, BCCI went ahead and made the call themselves.

Not only this, Rohit also got promoted as the vice-captain of the Test side, due to Ajinkya Rahane's low returns. Thus, all eyes are on who will be Rohit's deputy in the ODI format. BCCI haven't revealed the new vice-captain in the 50-over format, hence, another big update will follow suit in the coming days.

As per a report in TOI, KL Rahul is touted to be the new vice-captain in ODI cricket. For the unversed, he is already Rohit's deputy in the shortest format, hence, it will make sense for him to take up the same role in ODIs.

However, there's another school of thought which is eager to groom Rishabh Pant as a future captain. Hence, he may also be considered to be Rohit's deputy in ODIs.

“It’s important to maintain a balance. The selectors are not for making drastic changes. But the team management and the selectors are keen on giving younger players more important roles going forward. Pant is definitely seen as an important part of the leadership group although Rahul is the frontrunner for the vice-captaincy in ODIs because he is already the deputy to Rohit in T20Is,” a source was quoted as saying by TOI.

As per the reports, Rohit is keen to groom the next leader, hence, Pant can also be an option going forward.

"Rohit needed a clarity on his role. There aren’t many ODIs before India play the 2023 World Cup and he is big on grooming the next generation leader too. Virat Kohli too understood the situation,” a source told the paper.

Things will become crystal clear when BCCI announce India's ODI squad for the South Africa series, in the African nation, regarding the vice-captaincy position.

Who will be Rohit Sharma's deputy in ODIs? KL Rahul, Rishabh Pant in contention: Report

Over the years, the Delhi Capitals (DC) have become one of the most consistent sides in IPL history. While the IPL 2020 runners-up would've been eager to retain their core players, the Delhi franchise has gone ahead with four retained players. They are Rishabh Pant, Axar Patel, Prithvi Shaw and Anrich Nortje.

Hence, some big names have been left out of the DC franchise such as Marcus Stoinis, R Ashwin, Avesh Khan, Shikhar Dhawan and their former captain Shreyas Iyer.

DC co-owner Parth Jindal told the broadcasters after announcing the list, "It was heartbreaking. Absolutely heartbroken having to lose Shreyas Iyer, Kagiso Rabada, Shikhar Dhawan, R Ashwin. It is just unfair that you build up a team, give chance to youngsters, groom them but then you lose them after three years. I think IPL needs to look after it. But it is what it is. We are going to try and bring as many of the DC players back in the auction as we can."

For the unversed, DC have a total of 47.5 crores (475 million) in their purse heading into the IPL 2022 auction. Meanwhile, South Africa's speedster and DC's vital cog Nortje also reacted after being retained. "Really excited to be retained. Can't wait for 2022 to start. Due to injury, he lost the captaincy spot to Rishabh Pant in the first leg of IPL 2021. On his return for the final leg, he played under Pant for the remainder of the season.

Shreyas Iyer and I am not there: R Ashwin makes bold claim, says Delhi Capitals won't retain duo

India and New Zealand locked horns with each other in the third and final T20I at the iconic Eden Gardens, Kolkata on Sunday evening (November 21). After taking an unassailable lead in the three T20Is, the Rohit Sharma-led Men in Blue gave opportunities to more players and tested themselves by batting first as the hosts do not have a great record when it comes to defending totals.

Batting first, Rohit's 56 and vital contributions from the likes of Ishan Kishan, Shreyas and Venkatesh Iyer, Harshal Patel and Deepak Chahar propelled India's total to 184-7 in 20 overs. In reply, the Mitchell Santner-led Black Caps folded for a paltry 111 in 17.2 overs as Harshal and Axar Patel combined to take five wickets and derail the T20 World Cup finalists' run-chase.

The Rahul Dravid-coached team, thus, ended the series on a high with sparkling performances from many, in the form of Rohit, KL Rahul, Harshal, Axar, Deepak, R Ashwin, etc. Nonetheless, the former Indian opener-turned-commentator Aakash Chopra isn't impressed with one Indian youngster post the NZ series. For the unversed, Rishabh Pant registered scores of 17*, 12*, and 4 in the three-match series against the Black Caps and, hence, Chopra pointed out that the 24-year-old didn't look at his usual best.

Chopra told speaking on his YouTube channel, "The middle-lower order is still a concern because Rishabh Pant hasn't really batted the way we wanted him to bat. He hasn't batted the way he can bat, you expect more from him. The runs come from his bat, he hits sixes as well but I feel he hasn't yet fully cracked the T20 code, which is a bit of a disappointment. He is absolutely sensational in Tests, it is the format he has cracked easily but he is still figuring out his ways in the other formats."

He hasn't batted the way he can: Aakash Chopra names Indian star who disappointed him in NZ T20Is

'Absolutely, you need a break," said Jasprit Bumrah in the aftermath of India's loss against New Zealand in the recently-concluded T20 World Cup 2021, when asked if the team would have preferred a bigger break between the second leg of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2021 and the start of the World Cup in the UAE.

India's campaign got underway less than two weeks after the conclusion of IPL 2021 and it didn't take long for the players to realise the implications of having spent months playing continuous cricket in bio-bubbles across the world. In the past year, the 'new normal' as the bio bubble life has often been labelled as, has taken a massive toll on the mental health of cricketers.

It all started in August last year when the IPL got underway in the UAE after a long hiatus due to COVID-19. The challenges of living in a bubble were quite evident right from the beginning but the excitement of cricket returning after a long gap meant the ill effects were ignored.

But, as India's campaign derailed in the T20 World Cup, the mental health of the players took centre stage. As much as the form and priorities of each player were discussed in the aftermath of India's consecutive defeats in their first two Super 12 matches, mental health was one of the decisive factors in the team's poor start.

Mental health has never been taken as seriously in cricket as it has been in the past few months after the introduction of 'bio-bubbles' to combat the invisible virus. From Ben Stokes taking a break to Indian players and support staff talking openly of the fatigue caused by the bubble life, mental health has become one of the biggest talking points in cricket post COVID-19.

India's campaign in the T20 World Cup 2021 was all but over after their back-to-back defeats against Pakistan and New Zealand in the first two games but they hung on till the end. Only to eventually bow out despite winning the remaining three matches comprehensively.

While they didn't bring home the second T20 World Cup trophy but the tournament did enough to awaken the senses of Indian cricket which has for long ignored mental health and the issues surrounding it. India are one of the most active teams in world cricket and excessive cricket in these tough times can easily become mentally challenging for even the toughest of characters.

Here is a look at how much rest did each of the Indian players got ahead of the T20 World Cup 2021:

Before we start looking at the amount of rest each of the 15 members of the Indian T20 World Cup 2021 squad got ahead of the tournament, we need to take into account the common break periods for the team since IPL 2020.

The IPL 2020 final was played on November 10 and the Indian team had almost no break ahead of the Australia tour which kicked off on November 27 and lasted till January 19 2021. India got a six-day break before the start of the England series at home.

The team then got a break of two weeks after the cancellation of IPL 2021 in May ahead of the England tour and a 21-day break in England in between the World Test Championship final and the start of the Test series. Each of the 15 players were part of the IPL bio bubble in April-May and then September-October.

1) Virat Kohli - The former Indian T20I captain took just one break in between IPL 2020 and the start of the T20 World Cup this year. He missed the last three Tests against Australia due to paternity leave from December 21 to January 27.

2) Rohit Sharma - Rohit Sharma was injured ahead of the start of the Australia tour and had missed the ODI and T20I series Down Under along with the first two Test matches. He was out due to injury from November 11 to December 18.

3) KL Rahul - The Indian opener was ruled out of the Australia Test series after the conclusion of the firs two games and was on an injury break from January 05 to January 28.

4) Suryakumar Yadav - The batter was not part of India's tour of Australia but was in a bio-bubble during the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy in India. He got a 45-day break post IPL 2020 ahead of the start of the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. He then played the England series at home but was not part of the England tour and got 40 days rest before the Sri Lanka tour in July. He had then travelled to England post the SL tour.

5) Rishabh Pant - The wicket-keeper batter has been one of the busiest cricketers for Team India and has had no break since the IPL 2020. Pant has been part of each of India's series since the conclusion of the IPL last year without taking any rest.

6) Ishan Kishan - India's backup wicket-keeper and opener in the T20 World Cup this year, Ishan also got a 45-day break after IPL 2020 ahead of the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. He then got a 40-day break ahead of the Sri Lanka tour in May and a three-week break after the Sri Lanka tour before the start of IPL 2021's second leg.

7) Hardik Pandya - Hardik Pandya was on a break after the T20I series in Australia. He got a rest period of 50 days before the England series at home. He then had a 40-day break ahead of the Sri Lanka tour and a three-week break post that.

8) Ravindra Jadeja - The star all-rounder was out with an injury for 60 days from January 11. His Australia tour was cut short in between. Jadeja made his comeback in the England series at home and didn't get any break till the T20 World Cup 2021.

9) R Ashwin - R Ashwin was also in a bubble continuously throughout the Australia tour before entering another bubble during the England Test series at home. He then was part of the Test squad for the England tour ahead of IPL 2021's second leg and didn't get any break before the start of the T20 World Cup 2021.

10) Shardul Thakur - The Indian pacer didn't get any break from IPL 2020 to the start of the T20 World Cup 2021 this year as he was part of the Australia tour, England series at home, IPL 2021 and the England tour.

11) Mohammed Shami - Shami had an injury break of 90 days after getting ruled out following the first Test against Australia in December. He made a comeback during the first leg of IPL 2021 and stayed in bubbles continuously post that.

12) Jasprit Bumrah - One of India's best fast bowlers at present, Bumrah got a two-week break for his wedding when he left the bio-bubble midway through the England series at home. He has also been one of India's most active cricketers in the past year.

13) Varun Chakaravarthy - The spinner was initially named in India's T20 squad for the Australia tour but ended up missing the tour due to an injury. He was out for four months due to his injury and made his comeback in IPL 2021. Chakaravarthy then got a 40-day break after IPL 2021 was cancelled in May before the Sri Lanka tour. He then got a three-week rest post the SL tour.

14) Bhuvneshwar Kumar - The senior pacer was also out injured for quite a while and had missed the Australia tour entirely. He spent 60 days on the sidelines due to his injury and made his comeback in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. He then joined Team India's bubble for the England series at home and got the rest of 40 days after that before the Sri Lanka tour. He then got a three-week rest post the SL tour.

15) Rahul Chahar - The spinner got a two-month break post IPL 2020 as he was also not part of the Australia tour. Chahar then got a 40-day break after the IPL 2021 was suspended in May and a three-week break after the Sri Lanka tour.

Here is a look at how much rest did each of the Indian players got ahead of the T20 World Cup 2021: Before we start looking at the amount of rest each of the 15 members of the Indian T20 World Cup 2021 squad got ahead of the tournament, we need to take into account the common break periods for the team since IPL 2020. Too much cricket for Team India? Who got how much rest before T20 World Cup 2021

Since 2013, Team India have entered the knockouts in every ICC event. They won the Champions Trophy in 2013, ended as runners-up in 2014 T20 World Cup, 2017 Champions Trophy and inaugural World Test Championship. Further, they lost the semi-finals in the 2015 and 2019 ODI World Cup as well as in the 2016 T20 WC.

Being the dominant force at home, winning bilateral series across formats while being on the road and having played the IPL 14 final leg in UAE, Virat Kohli's Team India entered the 2021 T20 WC as one of the strongest contenders. In addition, they entered the showpiece event as the second-best side in terms of ICC T20I rankings (still hold the same position) but failed to make it to the last four.

While such one-off blips are always inevitable, how did India manage to falter when they had all the boxes ticked? Or, did they really have all bases covered before entering the multi-nation tournament?

Before we analyse how India managed to fall like nine pins, let's go through the pros attached to the Men in Blue camp. For starters, India had a solid top three -- Rohit Sharma, KL Rahul and Captain Virat Kohli. In addition, they had power-hitters in abundance in the form of Rishabh Pant, Suryakumar Yadav, Hardik Pandya, Ravindra Jadeja. Moreover, all their power-hitters were able finishers as well. In the bowling department, India comprised ace pacer Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Shami, seasoned campaigner Bhuvneshwar Kumar and were bolstered by the return of R Ashwin in the spin department. 'Mystery bowler' Varun Chakravarthy and Mumbai Indians' (MI) wicket-taker Rahul Chahar also had enough experience in UAE conditions (courtesy their recent IPL stints).

The one-time winners were surely extra motivated to give a proper send-off to the outgoing coaching staff, led by Ravi Shastri, and Captain Kohli (who had already announced that the T20 WC will be his last assignment as India's skipper in the shortest format). Above all, the national side also comprised MS Dhoni -- the most successful international captain with all three major ICC titles in his cabinet -- as mentor.

HOW DID INDIA STILL MANAGE TO FALTER?

CONTINUOUS CRICKET, TIRED LEGS, BIO-BUBBLE ISSUES

For the unversed, Team India players have been super busy in the post Covid-19 era. Competitive cricket returned with IPL 2020 in the UAE. The gruelling 60 matches kept the Indian players on their toes as they returned to the 22-yard cricket strip after a long gap. In addition, they were acclimatising with the bio-bubble demands. The mega event was followed by an full-fledged Australia tour (from November 27, 2020 to January 19, 2021).

The Australia trip was followed by England's all-format tour of India in early 2021, from February 5 to March 28. Soon, IPL 14's first leg followed suit, from April 09.

The Covid-19's second wave led to this year's IPL season's postponement on May 4. Hence, it did serve as some respite for the Indian players, giving them more time before the United Kingdom tour. The original IPL 2021 schedule was supposed to end on May 30. On the other hand, India were scheduled to play the WTC final on June 18 at Southampton. Hence, their break would've been minimal given how teams have to report early for mandatory quarantines and entering a bio-bubble environment.

Let's get back to how things actually shaped up! Indian players got a break with IPL 14's postponement but had to enter the bio-bubble in Mumbai, on May 19, for UK tour. They left for the UK on June 2 and departed for the UAE, in mid-September, after the fifth and final England Test got cancelled on September 10.

Note: Indian players were given a 20-day bio-bubble break post the WTC final, before reassembling for the England Tests.

Coming to the UAE, Indian players reported to their respective IPL franchises, as the tournament lasted till October 15. Soon, India played their Super 12 opener in the T20 WC, on October 24, before they bowed out with their last league stage match on November 8.

India's cricketing schedule in post-pandemic era

India tour of Australia: Nov 27, 2020- Jan 19, 2021

England tour of India: Feb 5- March 28

IPL 14 first leg: April 9-May 4

India vs New Zealand, WTC final: June 18-23

India vs England Tests in the UK: August 4-September 10

IPL 14 final leg: Sep 19-Oct 15

T20 WC: Oct 24-Nov 8

Barring the WTC final, India dominated and enjoyed considerable success in the post Covid-era. Somewhere down the line, the law of averages was always going to catch up with them.

NOT MANAGING 'PROBLEMS OF PLENTY', QUESTIONABLE SELECTIONS, APPALLING STRATEGIES

Apart from the continuous cricket, it is important to note that India's main squad assembled for the first time in T20Is for the World Cup. They had last played together in the format during the England home series, which ended on March 28. Thus, there was a staggering gap of 201 days (counting till the IPL finale on October 15). One can argue that the Indian players were still in the T20 groove by playing in the IPL. However, that they were performing different roles donning varied jerseys in the cash-rich league.

While the bio-bubble strain and fatigue factor had already kicked in, which was clearly evident the Pakistan and New Zealand face-offs, some eye-catching selections and poor strategies added to an exhausted side's woes. For instance, overlooking Yuzvendra Chahal -- who has been India's spin spearhead -- despite his form in IPL 14's final leg, not even including him in the standby list, putting Deepak Chahar (who has second-best figures overall in T20Is: 6 for 7) among standby players, suddenly adding R Ashwin (overlooked in limited-overs since 2017), preferring Varun Chakravarthy in the opening two games cost Kohli & Co. severely.

Note: Prior to the World Cup, the KKR spinner Chakravarthy had represented India in only three T20Is.

Having problems of plenty is surely a headache teams would like to afford While India have been blessed with plenty of T20I stars, are they managing them wisely? In order to unleash Ishan Kishan versus New Zealand, after the Pakistan mauling, India demoted Rohit Sharma at No. 3. Their best batsman was dropped down in the batting order at the expense of a young batter. Appalling! (Remember how India had auditioned several players for the No. 4 spot for the 2019 ODI World Cup before claiming that they will remain flexible with the batting slot in their campaign?)

TOO MANY COOKS SPOIL THE BROTH

Lastly, the whole of Indian cricket fraternity was in jubilant mood following MS Dhoni's appointment as team mentor for the mega event. After all, Dhoni had led India to their last ICC title in 2013 and enjoys huge respect among the current crop of players. As feared and already pointed out by Sunil Gavaskar, it seems it did lead to having several strong minds within the Team India dressing room, causing more ruckus in a 'problems of plenty' squad.

Undoubtedly, there is no question being raised about 'rift' issues. However, the tired minds and exhausted squad also couldn't gain much from Dhoni's presence.

How India under-performed in T20 WC? A quick look at the recipe that left a bad taste in our mouth

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on Friday (November 12) announced India's squad for the upcoming two-match Test series against New Zealand. Captain Virat Kohli will miss the first Test and return to lead the team in the second Test. His deputy Ajinkya Rahane will lead the team in Kohli's absence.

Senior opening batter Rohit Sharma, who was recently appointed as the Indian team's skipper in T20Is, will be missing the entire two-match series along with wicket-keeper batter Rishabh Pant to get a much-needed break after months of regular cricket.

In Rohit's absence, Mayank Agarwal is likely to open the innings with Shubman Gill with KL Rahul at no.3 in Kohli's absence during the first Test. Shreyas Iyer has also made the cut in the Test squad and is likely to feature in the middle-order if he makes his debut in the series.

In the absence of Pant, senior keeper Wriddhiman Saha has been selected in the squad along with young KS Bharat, who has been continuously impressing in the domestic circuit. Star all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja, who has been rested from the T20I series against the Kiwis, will return to feature in the Tests.

Senior pacer Jasprit Bumrah, who has also been rested from the T20Is will continue his break and will not take part in the Test series. In his absence, India have handed a maiden Test call-up to Prasidh Krishna, who will be eager to make his Test debut after impressing in the domestic circuit.

Coach Tarak Sinha, a mentor to dozens of first-class and international cricketers, passed away on Saturday and was grieved by the cricketing community, with his brightest ward Rishabh Pant admitting the loss has left him devastated.

Sinha passed away on Saturday morning after a protracted illness. He was 71 years old.

Mourning his death, India's star wicket-keeper Pant, who is now in the UAE for the ICC T20 World Cup, said he will remember him every time he steps on the field.

"My mentor, coach, motivator, my biggest critic and my greatest fan. You took care of me like your son, I am devastated. You will always be with me whenever I walk out onto the field. My heartfelt condolences & prayers. May your soul rest in peace, Tarak sir," tweeted Pant.

Pant was one of Sinha's sharpest students. Devender Sharma, Sinha's longtime assistant, actively coached him.

Sinha, revered by his pupils as "Ustad ji" was a father figure in Delhi's legendary Sonnet Club, which produced some of the country's greatest cricketers who dominated local and international cricket.

Over the course of over five decades, he nourished, cultivated, and managed raw talent, providing them with a stage to perform and wings to soar through his club.

That is why several of his most prominent pupils (who do not wish to be identified) were monitoring his health and making required arrangements until his death.

Among his earlier students were Delhi cricket legends.

Former India opener Virender Sehwag expressed his sadness after the loss.

"Feel a lot of pain on the demise of passing away of Ustaad ji #TarakSinha. He was one of the rare coaches who gave India more than a dozen Test Cricketers & the values he inculcated in his students helped Indian cricket immensely. Condolences to his family and students," he tweeted.

Pant, Sehwag and others pay tribute as cricket coach Tarak Sinha passes away at 71

Prior to the T20 World Cup, Virat Kohli had dropped a bomb in mid-September when he announced that he will lead India for the last time in the shortest format in the marquee event in the UAE. Under him, India remain alive in the T20 WC but have very slim chances of making it to the semi-finals of the showpiece event as they need to win their remaining two games in the Super 12 round, by big margins, and also hope for other results to favour them.

India are in a tricky position in the Super 12 of the T20 WC after back-to-back defeats in their opening two fixtures, versus Pakistan and New Zealand, respectively. Irrespective of whether India will progress to the semi-finals or bow out in the group stages, the world cricket is eagerly waiting to see who will succeed Kohli as T20I captain.

In this regard, former Indian opener-turned-commentator Virender Sehwag told while responding to a query by a fan on his Facebook Watch show Virugiri Dot Com, "I think there are many candidates for captain but I think Rohit is the best candidate because he has done well as a leader for the Mumbai Indians team in the IPL. He has won the IPL championship five times. So according to me, the next T20 captain of Team India should be Rohit Sharma."

As per reports, Rohit or Rahul are frontrunners to replace Kohli and become the next Indian captain in T20Is. In addition, the BCCI might also look to replace Kohli and appoint only one white-ball captain, especially if India bow out f the T20 WC in the group stages. The 33-year-old Kohli is, however, very likely to remain Team India's Test captain.

Rohit, KL Rahul or Pant? Sehwag suggests who should be India's next T20I captain after Virat Kohli

Star all-rounder Hardik Pandya will be an impact player for India in the ongoing T20 World Cup, India Test vice-captain Ajinkya Rahane said, urging the side to rally around the injury-ravaged cricketer whose role as a bowler is uncertain due to fitness issues.

There has been a lot of debate regarding Pandya's inclusion in the squad as he did not bowl in the recently-concluded IPL. The team management has, time and again, stressed on the importance of his bowling to the side's overall balance.

"We need to support him. When a player comes back from an injury, we don't know what situation he goes through and what is his mindset. It is easy to talk from outside, but what that individual is going through, we can't even feel it," said Rahane said on 'Salaam Cricket 2021' on Sports Tak.

"He has won India many matches in this format with some impactful performances. There will always be outside news, who should play and who shouldn't. Hardik's role is very crucial and we need to back him."

Rahane also feels that his IPL team Delhi Capitals' captain Rishabh Pant would be a "game-changer" for India. The team's World cup campaign opens with a clash against arch-rivals Pakistan on Sunday.

"He is such a batsman who can change the complexion of the game immediately. We have seen his ability in Australia in Tests, also against England, he scored runs. He has improved his game immensely. He now knows how to take his game one notch above."

The dew would play a major role in the T20 World Cup, just like it did in the IPL, making toss a crucial aspect of the game. India are playing all their games in the evening and coach Ravi Shastri has stated that dew would decide whether the bowling attack will feature and extra pacer or spinner.

"Dew factor didn't matter in the initial period but it started to make a mark in the finishing stages (during IPL) as the weather started to change a bit," Rahane recalled.

"It came down hard in the final few games, especially in Sharjah, where the toss became very important because of the dew.

"The ball will grip on the UAE wickets which are a bit slow. Batsmen found it difficult to play scoring shots but that changed a bit because of the dew factor. The toss will be very important because of the dew factor."

Talking about India's chances, Rahane said: "India has a strong team, it is a plus point that IPL was held here, weather is also getting better...I hope we win the World Cup. Our team has a good balance.."

"Pakistan players have played a lot of cricket in the UAE. There is not much difference in conditions here and in India, so we know how to adapt to the conditions.

"All other players, including batters and bowlers, who have played in the IPL, they too have an advantage because they have played here. We always respect the opposition and this T20 team would show the same respect to the Pakistan team as (it shows) to any other opposition."

It will be a swansong event for Kohli as captain and Rahane said the team will try to win the trophy for him.

"I don't think there will be any pressure. He has captained the side for so many years and we know his record... All the players will try to win it for Kohli. We also have (Mahendra Singh) Dhoni as mentor, his presence will help the team."

Probed further on how Dhoni's presence will help, Rahane said: "See, he has captained India for so many years and he has captained CSK also all these years, his experience in this format... We know how good a captain he is, how sharp he is."

"He doesn't speak much but shares some small important points which will help the team. He doesn't complicate things, keeps it simple."

India have a lot of options in the opening slot with Kohli too expressing his desire to take the slot during the England series. Rahane said flexibility will be the key.

"It is important to have flexibility in this format and we do have flexibility. Virat had opened against England, but I don't know what would be the decision (during World Cup).

"I think we can't go with a fixed mindset ...It will depend on wicket, conditions, strategy, it is important to not get predictable."

T20 WC: Hardik Pandya will be an impact player for India, Rishabh Pant a game-changer, says Ajinkya Rahane

Virat Kohli-led Team India will begin their T20 World Cup 2021 campaign, in the UAE, with their tournament-opener versus Pakistan, on October 24 (Sunday) at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium, Dubai. India are placed in a tricky group, i.e. Pool B, and will have to be on their toes to march ahead into the semi-finals.

It, however, goes without saying that Kohli-led India will start as one of the favourites for the ICC event as they have plenty of match-winners. The Men in Blue are aiming for their second title in the T20 WC and have plethora of star players in their arsenal, such as KL Rahul, Rohit Sharma, Kohli, Suryakumar Yadav, Ravindra Jadeja, Rishabh Pant, Hardik Pandya, Shardul Thakur, Varun Chakravarthy, Jasprit Bumrah, etc.

Among plenty of match-winners in India's line-up, the former Pakistan captain Wasim Akram named SKY as the gamechanger for Team India. "India have found a player in Suryakumar Yadav. I think he will change the game after those 6 overs in time to come. I have seen his shots. He was with me at KKR as well, now he has improved as a cricketer. He plays his shots, safe shots and doesn't stop. So, he needs to go the way he has been playing in his career," Akram said on the ‘Salaam Cricket’ show on Sports Tak.

Suryakumar, following three successive IPL seasons for Mumbai Indians (MI), made his international debut early this year. He has already made heads turn with his ability to play shots all around the ground and maintain a healthy strike-rate at the top of the order.

Not Hardik Pandya or Rishabh Pant! Wasim Akram names India's gamechanger ahead of Pakistan T20 WC face-off

Former Australia cricketer Matthew Hayden has weighed in on the high-octane T20 World Cup clash between India and Pakistan, which is scheduled to be held on Sunday (October 24).

Former Australia cricketer Matthew Hayden has weighed in on the high-octane T20 World Cup clash between India and Pakistan, which is scheduled to be held on Sunday (October 24). Hayden, who is working with the Pakistan team as a batting consultant, said that leadership will be key and as conditions in UAE leave "very little margin for error". During a media interaction, Hayden said, "I feel leadership will be key in the coming match as conditions in UAE leave very little margin for error and there are dogfight conditions out there." Citing examples of MS Dhoni and Eoin Morgan from the recently concluded Indian Premier League (IPL), where both the players led their teams — Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) — with success when their own individual performances were not at expected levels. ALSO READ | Steve Smith names 'serious match-winners' who got 'all bases covered' to win T20 World Cup "Their individual performances were not as good as they have previously done as per their statistical records but the way they led their troops and conducted themselves played an important part in their teams reaching the IPL final in UAE conditions," Hayden said. Commenting on the Virat Kohli-led team, Hayden said having followed Indian cricket very closely over the years, he believes that KL Rahul and Rishab Pant pose the biggest threat to Pakistan in the match. "More or less I have watched KL Rahul grow and he is a major threat to Pakistan. I have watched him grow up as a boy. I have seen his struggles and his dominance in shorter formats. Hayden said Pakistan captain Babar Azam had a role to play in the match as a leader and a premium batter. "There will be additional pressure on him as captain and batsman because he will be targeted and everyone will be wanting to, like they say, put him in their pocket. Babar has command and presence and he needs to fulfil that role in a batting sense and captain." "For an Australian obviously the Ashes and matches against England are tops but nothing matches the rivalry of these two teams," said Hayden.

Dhoni has been roped in as a mentor for Team India for the marquee tournament, in order to help Virat Kohli & Co. break their 8-year-old ICC-title drought and win their second title in the T20 WC history. It was under Dhoni when India won the inaugural edition, in 2007, in South Africa. Since then, the Men in Blue came close in the 2014 edition but ended as runners-up whereas the last edition saw them bow out in the semi-finals.

Talking about Pant, the swashbuckling left-hander was in good touch in the first warm-up fixture, between India and England, as his cameo (14-ball 29*) helped Kohli & Co. beat England by 7 wickets. His form in the middle and lower-order will be crucial for India in the tournament.

India are placed in Pool B along with Pakistan, New Zealand, Afghanistan whereas two other teams will join from the qualifiers.

There's never a dull moment when Rishabh Pant is standing behind the stumps, whether for Team India or the Delhi Capitals (DC) in the IPL. After taking DC to the playoffs in IPL 2021, the swashbuckling left-hander resumed his services as a wicketkeeper-batsman for Virat Kohli-led India in their first warm-up encounter, versus England, in the T20 World Cup 2021 in the UAE, on Monday evening (October 18).

As expected, Pant left everyone in splits with his commentary from behind the stumps. When R Ashwin came onto bowl the 11th over of England's innings, after India opted to bowl first at ICC Academy Ground, Dubai, Pant hilariously asked the wily off-spinner to resort to leg-spin.

The 24-year-old Pant suggested Ashwin, "Armaan pura karne ka yahi mauka hai. Leg spin karne ka Mauka bhi hai, dastoor bhi hai (This is your chance to fulfil your desire of bowling leg spin). The IPL 2021 edition's final is taking place on Friday (October 15) but the cricketing action will continue for the sport's ardent lovers as the T20 World Cup is set to commence from October 17 (Sunday). The mega event was scheduled to be held last year in Australia, however, the Covid-19 pandemic led to the showpiece event getting postponed.

The forthcoming edition will take place in the UAE, which will kick off with the qualifying round whereas the main draw of the tournament will take place from October 23. Ahead of the ICC event, Star Sports -- official broadcasters of the marquee tournament -- shared a hilarious video where Team India captain Virat Kohli trolled wicketkeeper-batsman Rishabh Pant in an epic manner.

The video starts with Kohli saying, “Rishabh, sixes win you matches in T20 cricket.” To this, Pant replied saying, "Don’t worry bhaiya (brother), I am practicing every day. It was a wicketkeeper that won India a World Cup by hitting a six (reminding one and all of MS Dhoni's 2011 ODI World Cup winning shot).

Delhi Capitals (DC) enjoyed a stellar campaign in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2021. In what was Rishabh Pant's debut season as the captain of the side, he guided DC to a top of the table finish in the league stages with an impressive 20 points from 14 matches. However, the team failed to make it to the final after suffering back-to-back defeats in both the Qualifiers.

Delhi Capitals were the best team in the league stage of the tournament as they went on to bag ten wins in 14 matches to finish on top of the table. DC lost to second-placed Chennai Super Kings in the first Qualifier before getting ousted by Kolkata Knight Riders in the 2nd Qualifier.

Nonetheless, Pant, who was appointed as the captain of the side in the absence of Shreyas Iyer ahead of the start of IPL 2021, led the side well. He was retained by DC as the captain even after Iyer's return from injury ahead of the UAE leg and led the team in all 16 matches that they played this season.

Though Pant proved his captaincy credentials by leading DC to the playoffs comfortably this season, former Delhi Capitals skipper and ex-India opener Gautam Gambhir wants the franchise to head into the new season with a new captain at the helm. While speaking on ESPN Cricinfo, Gambhir backed R Ashwin to replace Pant as the captain of the Delhi Capitals for IPL 2022. Gambhir said it might appear as a bizarre call but he would back Ashwin as the captain next season.

"Look, I'm one of his biggest fans and he's one of the best spinners in the world. If you look at the overall line-up, it may be a bizarre call maybe and only I can think about this... but if I was there, I would like to make him the captain of Delhi Capitals next year," said Gambhir, who lifted the IPL trophy twice as a captain with Kolkata Knight Riders.

Ashwin had led Punjab Kings for two seasons in 2018 and 2019 before being traded to Delhi Capitals. He was replaced by KL Rahul at the helm for Punjab. Ashwin is an experienced campaigner when it comes to the IPL and has 145 wickets to his name in 167 matches.

"Can't change anything after the match. Always we kept on believing and stayed in the game for as long as possible. The bowlers pulled it back. They bowled really well through the middle overs. We were stuck and unable to rotate the strike. Hopefully, we can come back next year for a stronger season," after the game, Pant told host broadcaster Star Sports.

"We played really good cricket throughout the season. We stuck together and cared for each other. Hopefully, we will improve next year and come back strongly," he added.

Shreyas Iyer, the former skipper of Delhi Capitals also expressed his love and belief in the team. “To be back with the team and back on the field was a moment that I’ve been looking forward to for what felt like ages. Rishabh Pant-led Delhi Capitals (DC) faced the two-time winners Eoin Morgan-led Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in Qualifier 2 of the IPL 2021 edition, at the Sharjah Cricket Stadium, Sharjah, on Wednesday (October 13). In a bid to enter their second successive IPL final, the Pant-led DC franchise lost the battle to the KKR line-up by three wickets in a thrilling encounter.

Being asked to bat first, Pant & Co. rode on sedate knocks from Shikhar Dhawan, Shreyas Iyer and Shimron Hetmyer to post 135-5. With two wickets falling in succession, KKR needed 6 off 2 balls before Rahul Tripathi finished the proceedings by hitting a maximum on the penultimate ball, off R Ashwin, as KKR entered the final whereas DC bowed out of the 14th edition.

While Pant was very emotional and at a loss of words after DC's exit, the 24-year-old was at his best before the Qualifier 2 kicked off. Ahead of the game, the wicketkeeper-batsman hilariously pranked umpire Anil Choudhary and left everyone in splits. Here's what he did:

IPL 2021: Delhi Capitals players dejected after losing to KKR, video of emotional Prithvi Shaw goes viral

IPL 2021 edition saw two new captains in the form of Rishabh Pant and Sanju Samson. While Samson took charge of the Rajasthan Royals (RR), taking over from Steve Smith, Pant replaced Shreyas Iyer after the Delhi Capitals (DC) skipper injured himself ahead of IPL 14's first leg, in India early this year.

While Iyer joined the DC franchise before the second and final leg, in the UAE, the team management continued with Pant as the skipper for the remainder of the season. Under Pant, DC topped the league stage and bowed out after losing the Qualifier 2 to Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR). On the other hand, Samson-led RR finished at the seventh position.

Though T20s is regarded as a format for the youngsters, Sanjay Manjrekar still prefers experience over youth when it comes to leading a side in T20s. Hence, the former Indian cricketer-turned-commentator made a big claim on Pant and Samson being given captaincy in IPL 2021.

"I just don't understand the basis of that call because T20 captaincy is tough, it has a great impact... so I believe you've got to have brilliant T20 captains captaining sides and then even an ordinary side, I mean, look at CSK they have major weaknesses there but Dhoni has been able to get the best out of his playing XI. And those are the kind of captains IPL teams deserve, captains who are brilliant and just by their leadership and tactics will make a difference," he further asserted
