Rishabh Pant's journey as the captain in the Indian Premier League is off to a good start as Delhi Capitals have won three of the four matches in the on-going tournament and are second on the points table.

Their latest win came against defending champions Mumbai Indians where they won for the first time in six games. During the aftermatch presentation, Pant said that head coach Ricky Ponting and other seniors have helped him a great deal as a skipper.

"I think, yes, as a wicketkeeper I keep on reading the game and it helps me a lot. With seniors around and Ricky Ponting in our management, I think my captaincy is going great," said Rishabh a virtual press conference.

Batting first, Mumbai Indians started on a shaky note as they lost opener Quinton de Kock (1) for cheap. Rohit Sharma and Suryakumar Yadav stitched a handy partnership as the skipper scored 44 off 30 while SKY came up with 24 runs before edging one off Avesh Khan. Ishan Kishan scored a watchful 26 off 28 as in what was a tricky Chennai pitch. However, the Mumbai Indians middle order collapsed with the likes of Hardik Pandya (0), Krunal Pandya (1) and Kieron Pollard (2) getting outdone by Amit Mishra and Lalit Yadav.

Jayant Yadav scored a handy 23 runs off 22 as Mumbai Indians posted 137-9 in 20 overs – the lowest score of IPL 2021.

For Delhi Capitals, veteran Amit Mishra picked up four wickets and Avesh Khan continued his good run of form with two scalps to his name. Kagiso Rabada, Marcus Stoinis and Lalit Yadav picked up a wicket each.

Chasing 138, Delhi Capitals lost the in-form opener, Prithvi Shaw, for 7 as Jayant Yadav drew first blood. Steve Smith and Shikhar Dhawan stitched a 53-run knock as the duo showed their experience to pull DC out of a tricky powerplay phase. While the Australian was trapped plumb by Kieron Pollard, Dhawan was sent packing by Rahul Chahar in the 15th over.

Jasprit Bumrah continued to cement his position as one of the best bowlers in death overs as he got the big wicket of DC captain Rishabh Pant for seven whereas his partner Trent Boult once again was at the top of his game with the ball.

However, Shimron Hetmyer and Lalit Yadav took Delhi Capitals over the winning line to seal their third win in IPL 2021. With the win, DC have six points to their name in the points table.

'I think my captaincy is going great': Rishabh Pant on leading Delhi Capitals

Delhi Capitals were off to a wonderful start as Dhawan and Shaw guided the team to a massive win against Chennai Super Kings in Match 2 of IPL 2021. This was Rishabh Pant's first-ever game as a captain for Delhi Capitals after Shreyas Iyer was ruled out from the tournament following a shoulder injury.

Speaking after the match, Shaw spoke about Pant's captaincy and described the youngster as a "fearless" leader.

"We really miss Shreyas Iyer, and he led the team very well. However, Rishabh Pant is very smart. He is fearless and enjoys the game. He's very entertaining on the field and is very cool and calm as a Captain. He's doing a fantastic job for the team," Pant was quoted as saying in a DC press release.

Delhi had a big chase ahead after Chennai set a target of 189 runs. However, openers Shikhar Dhawan and Prithvi Shaw gave the best possible start for the Capitals. The duo stitched a 138-run partnership.

Prithvi Shaw scored a brilliant 72 runs off 38 balls including nine 4s and three sixes.

Dhawan smashed 85 runs in 54 balls. He smashed 10 4s and two sixes and was adjudged the Man of the Match.

Both Dhawan and Shaw's half-century was enough to dampen CSK's confidence. Despite Shaw and Dhawan's dismissal, Delhi easily chased the big total.

IPL 2021: Dhawan and Shaw's mammoth partnership help Delhi Capitals beat Chennai Super Kings

After finishing as the runner-up of the previous edition of the Indian Premier League, the Delhi Capitals will start their 14th edition of the IPL in Mumbai on Saturday, against Chennai Super Kings at the Wankhede Stadium. Delhi Capitals will look to go one up and lift the trophy for the first time. DC's new skipper Rishabh Pant is looking forward to defeating his mentor and former Indian captain MS Dhoni-led Chennai Super Kings in what will be his captaincy debut in the cash-rich T20 tournament.

Speaking ahead of their opening match, Head Coach Ricky Ponting and Captain Rishabh Pant expect to achieve a better result this season.

"The CSK have got a good squad of players and they've got lots of flexibility and a lot of options. But we've got a great squad as well and we want to build on last season. I have said to the boys that it's not about last season, but there are a lot of positives that we can take from the way we have played in the last couple of seasons. Although we've got a slightly different squad, we expect to play better as a group and achieve some better results. So, for us, Chennai Super Kings is just game one. We need to approach it with the right attitude and play well. Hopefully, win that game and move onto the second game. But we know that we'll have to play well to win," said Ponting.

The Australian added that Suresh Raina, who missed the last season, will make a big difference to the CSK outfit this year, "The Chennai Super Kings have been one of the most successful teams in the history of the IPL. They have got a great leader and a great squad of players. They have always managed to play consistent cricket. Last year, they were probably disappointed with the way their season worked out, but I think a lot of that had to do with the fact that Suresh Raina wasn't there for the entire tournament. He comes back to the squad this year, which is almost like a new recruit for them."

The Delhi Capitals Captain Rishabh Pant expressed that it will be very special for him to lead an IPL team for the first time in a match against MS Dhoni's side, "It will be extra special to walk out for the toss with MS Dhoni tomorrow. This will be the first time that I will be leading an IPL team and the first match is against Mahi bhai. I have learned a lot from him, and I have gained a lot of experience from him. Hopefully, I can use this experience against him, and we can win this match. That's what I am looking forward to."

Pant added that the Delhi Capitals squad, for the IPL 2021, has a great mix of experience and youth, "I have been talking to the senior players like Shikhar Dhawan, Ravichandran Ashwin and Ajinkya Rahane about the fields we can set and other strategic decisions for the team. I have been talking to Ricky and our Bowling Coach James Hopes as well. There's a good mix of seniors and juniors in our squad and I think with the help of Ricky, we can do something different this year."

The DC head coach said that all players are hungry to perform and are ready for another challenge in the IPL, "I am really happy about how our last 10-11 days have gone. There will be certainly no excuses from us about how we perform in Game 1. We've got a great group of players, who are hungry and excited for another challenge for us as a franchise and a team. So, I am excited to see how the boys play tomorrow."

Pant expressed that he is just looking to keep things simple in his first match as Skipper in the IPL.

Pant had a great last year in the IPL which saw him earn a spot in the Indian team. Pant has not looked back since. He made the most of his opportunities, be it Test cricket, ODIs, or T20Is. He was also named as the captain of the Capitals` squad for this season.

Speaking on Star Sports` show Game Plan, Parthiv Patel said, "I think Rishabh Pant carries a lot of confidence with him and that`s what you want when you are playing a T20 game. You don`t want any doubts in your mind and especially a player like Rishabh Pant. He was burdened with the comparison of MS Dhoni and he also tried to do that, but he himself is a brilliant player. He doesn`t have to worry about being like MS Dhoni. He can be better than MS Dhoni or he can win matches on his own every given time. So, I think Rishabh Pant will probably hold the key for Delhi Capitals."

Parthiv further analysed the Mumbai Indians` team for IPL 2021 and said, "I don`t think Mumbai Indians will be thinking of where they are playing next. All the teams would be thinking about where they are playing first and you know, try and get their best team forward, try and get their best XI on the path.

"If they are playing in Chennai, you might expect some spinner but from the Mumbai Indians point of view, I don`t think they have to tinker a lot with their playing XI because Hardik Pandya is bowling quite a bit now, almost bowling 4 overs, Pollard bowls his slower ones really well, which might be useful on a Chennai wicket. And obviously, Rahul Chahar had an outstanding IPL, a couple of outstanding IPLs and hence, he was picked for India. Krunal Pandya`s 4 overs, his form in domestic cricket, so I can go on and on about it," he added.

When asked about his thoughts on whether Royal Challengers Bangalore will have the right start in the IPL, he said, "It all matters how you are ending the tournament, doesn`t it? I think we have seen Mumbai Indians so many times, not starting the tournament well, but picking at the right time, but once they get to the business end of the tournament, you know if they have to win five out of five, they have the team to go win it in Kolkata.

"But I think there were a lot of questions to be answered in the auction, but I don`t think they have answered those questions. Just because they were not expecting it to go out of Bangalore. Hence, Moeen Ali went. If Moeen Ali was there, it would have been a different XI altogether. And one player actually can change the composition of the XI. As he rightly said, attention was to try to get away from ABD and Virat, but how much attention they are trying to win it away inside the team will matter the most and not outside of the team," he added.

The IPL 2021 is slated to begin on April 9 with Mumbai Indians and Royal Challengers Bangalore locking horns in the tournament opener.

Rahul addressed a virtual press conference on Thursday and talked about the healthy competition for the wicketkeeper’s slot with Rishabh Pant who is having a prolific run in cricket currently.

“When you are part of this Indian team, you always know competition would be really high. You can never sit back and feel comfortable like you own your position. That's the good thing, our team has high talent, players will always come in. As a player in this team, you always try to push yourself and try to get better with each passing day,” Rahul said.

Rahul was asked whether it was easier to start afresh in a new series, to which he replied: “Like I said, the ODI format, playing at number five, I could take a little more time than I did maybe in T20s. Having spent a little time in the middle, having played a couple of good shots, the footwork got better.

“When I walked in, Shikhar was batting well. I knew when Krunal walked in, I realised we had to stitch a partnership together, when you stop thinking about your own personal game and when there is responsibility in front of you, you start thinking clearer, having spent 20-25 balls in the middle, I started to feel more confident,” said Rahul.

Another bizarre rule of cricket created controversy in the ongoing second ODI between India and England when the Men in Blue and Rishabh Pant were not given a boundary due after bowler Tom Curran appealed for LBW at the Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium in Pune on Friday.

While the rule was correctly implemented by the umpires, Pant found himself in an unfortunate position as despite hitting a boundary, he wasn't awarded a single run for it.

The incident took place in the 40th over of the first innings, bowled by Tom Curran. The England seamer bowled a yorker as the ball ricocheted off to the boundary rope. England appealed strongly for an LBW and the on-field umpire Virender Singh gave the southpaw out. However, Pant took the DRS instantly and the slow-motion replays clearly showed that the ball came off Pant's bat before going under his legs and racing past wicket-keeper Jos Buttler to the boundary rope.

The T20 format has helped the game of cricket evolve over the years. From the days when players used to be conservative about their shot-selection to youngsters playing fearless and glitzy shots, cricket has come a long way since the introduction of T20 cricket.

Former Sri Lankan batsman Tillakaratne Dilshan was the first player to play the scoop shot - over the wicket-keeper, against Australia in 2009 World T20 - which later became famous by the name of ‘Dilscoop’. Since then, the world of cricket has seen a plethora of innovative shots with the latest being Rishabh Pant's masterclass against England pacers James Anderson and Jofra Archer.

The inventor of ‘Dilscoop’ - Dilshan – has lauded the fearless approach of Rishabh Pant and other youngsters as they continue to innovate and entertain the crowd with their batting while also helping their respective teams win matches across formats.

Pant, who unleashed the reverse-swat, first against veteran pacer James Anderson in the fourth Test in Ahmedabad, left everyone flabbergasted by his sheer audacity to attempt the stroke against England's leading wicket-taker. But that was not enough, the youngster played a similar stroke against Jofra Archer when the England pacer was bowling at close to 150kph to leave everyone awestruck.

Dilshan said he is extremely delighted to see youngsters showing confidence in their ability and are not taken aback by the pace or class of the bowler.

“I think it's really good. Since the introduction of T20 cricket, few youngsters do different things on the field. For example, I tried to invent Dilscoop now people have tried to play the reverse sweeps, switch hits, paddles, etc. I think it is really a good thing that they are challenging themselves. I feel if any good cricketer can take that challenge, that's really good for the game to advance. It can go a long way. We can see not only in T20s or one-dayers but now even in Test cricket young cricketers try to take some chances by playing reverse sweeps and reverse paddles,” Dilshan answered to a WION query during a media interaction.

“It is really good that they have the confidence to do these kinds of things. They have confidence that's why they are doing it. The best thing is to enjoy it when you are trying different things and not think much about failures. The crowd wants to see different things from newcomers. I'm really happy that young cricketers are trying innovative things. I'm really happy,” Dilshan, who scored 10,290 ODI runs for Sri Lanka, added.

Former India wicket-keeper Saba Karim has said that the Men in Blue are ''blessed'' to have two talented players in Ishan Kishan and Rishabh Pant who are similar to MS Dhoni. The former glovesman further said that he expects both Pant and Ishan to play for India in all three formats of the game and do well.

Earlier Rishabh Pant proved that and now when Ishan Kishan has been given an opportunity, his mindset has also been similar. "So I feel India is blessed to have match-winning ability players like Ishan Kishan and Rishabh Pant in the shorter format of the game. I have full confidence that in the future Ishan Kishan and Rishabh Pant will represent India in all three formats," Karim added. Pant has seen a turnaround in his career. After being sidelined from all formats of the game, the southpaw stormed back into form in the last three months and won games for India against Australia and England. Former Indian batting coach Sanjay Bangar was stunned with Pant's outrageous shot against the English quick.

"To play a shot like that against a bowler who is bowling at 140-150 kph and that too when Jofra Archer followed him after seeing him getting into a position for a shot like that, and despite that he got bat to ball is praiseworthy. I was left astonished with his talent, ability, and where the skill level has gone," Bangar said on Star Sports.

"He is a special player, he is a match-winner and stroke-maker. And sometimes he will get out playing such shots. So, it will be necessary that he is encouraged to play his natural game and he will then be able to win the maximum matches for the team, the way he did in Australia.

"He did not get much batting before the Australia tour, he did a lot of hard work. He is playing in the same fashion, he is a game-changer who wins matches for his team," Bangar signed off.

Rishabh Pant’s ascent in the Tyres ICC Men’s Test Player Rankings continues unabated and he is now at a career-best seventh position after smashing a match-winning 101 in the fourth Test against England in Ahmedabad which India won by an innings and 25 runs to clinch the series 3-1.

Pant has moved up seven slots and shares seventh place with compatriot Rohit Sharma, who has inched up one spot, and Henry Nicholls of New Zealand. Pant’s 747 rating points are the joint-15th highest by any India batsman, and the highest by a full-time Test wicketkeeper from his country.

Washington Sundar, who also played a crucial role in India’s passage to the final of the ICC World Test Championship, has gained 39 places and is in 62nd position, thanks to his 96 not out, but captain Virat Kohli and Cheteshwar Pujara had below-par series. Kohli is at his lowest points tally since November 2017 while Pujara is under 700 rating points for the first time since September 2016.

There was no surprise in the rankings reflecting kindly on spinners Ravichandran Ashwin and Axar Patel, who ripped through the England innings time and again during the series.

ICC Test Rankings: Rishabh Pant achieves career-best 7th position, Virat Kohli witnesses major dip

BCCI president Sourav Ganguly feels that Rishabh Pant possesses traits similar to Yuvraj Singh, Virender Sehwag, and MS Dhoni and hailed him as the "game-changer".

IN PICS: IND vs ENG: Rishabh Pant's magnificent century against Jimmy Anderson and Co.

Ganguly, who was a part of the Delhi Capitals' coaching staff in 2019, has worked closely with the young southpaw. Former Indian skipper explained how Pant's batting skills are on an upward curve since the Tour to Australia.

"I have seen Pant very closely and I believe in match-winners. When they get going on their day, they single-handedly can win matches. Rishabh Pant is such a player," Ganguly told India Today. "I have also said this in the past, had he stayed at the crease for 5 or 6 overs, India could have won the Sydney Test. He is a game-changer. I like match-winners. In my time, we had Sehwag, Yuvraj, Dhoni."

Rishabh Pant had a tough 2020 as he was dropped from the limited-overs format and was substituted for Wriddhiman Saha in the Indian Test squad due to a string of poor performances on the ground. However, after a disappointing loss against Australia in Adelaide after Virat and Co. were bowled out for record low 36, Pant was played in the XI for the Boxing Day Test match where the young wicketkeeper left his mark.

During the third Test at the SCG, Pant almost won the game for India after producing a solid knock of 97 runs while chasing a mammoth total of 407 runs.

And the young wicketkeeper's 89 runs in the fourth Test at Gabba helped India breach the Australian fortress as Rahane and Co. sealed the series.

Pant's sublime form continued during the England Test as he scored 91 runs in the first match even though Team India lost. However, Pant's best knock came in the fourth Test at the Narendra Modi Stadium as the southpaw smashed a ton and helped India take a significant lead despite a poor start.

"Look at the way he played against England. India were 146 for 6 (4th Test in Ahmedabad). The match could have gone anyway. He turned it around with his knock. Look at his game sense. The second new ball came in. His counterattack against Anderson was brilliant," Ganguly added.

Billings said after watching Pant smacking the likes of Kagiso Rabada, Chris Morris and Nathan Coulter-Nile at the nets, he turned straight to Rahul Dravid, who was the mentor of the franchise at that time, to ask about the youngster while terming the southpaw as "unbelievable”.

England wicketkeeper-batsman Sam Billings has recalled the first time he saw Rishabh Pant in the nets during his time with Delhi Daredevils – now Delhi Capitals. Billings spent two seasons with the Delhi franchise before being signed up by Chennai Super Kings. During the auction of Indian Premier League (IPL) 2021, Billings was roped in by Delhi Capitals for his base price of INR 2 crore. Ahead of IPL 2021, the England international recalled when he spotted Pant at the nets. 'I turned to Rahul Dravid and asked...' Sam Billings recalls watching Rishabh Pant for first time

Rishabh Pant's batting in the fourth Test left the cricketing world stunned. The southpaw scored a crucial quick-ton to put India in a commanding position in the final Test match of the series at the Narendra Modi Stadium. He earned a lot of praise from several experts and former players of the game, including Pakistan's Inzamam-Ul-Haq.

Former Pakistan skipper said that he is yet to come across a player as boisterous as the young India wicketkeeper and added that it felt like watching a left-handed version of Virender Sehwag.

"Rishabh Pant, absolutely brilliant. After a long time, I have seen a player on whom pressure seems to have no effect. Even if six wickets are down at 146, the way he starts his innings, no one does. He plays his strokes, irrespective of the pitch or how many runs the other team has scored. He is equally good against spinners and fast bowlers. I thoroughly enjoy watching him. It's like watching Sehwag bat left-handed," Inzamam said on his YouTube channel.

Sehwag's form was at its peak when India toured Pakistan in 2004, the opening batsman smashed a memorable 309 at Multan. Taking a note from Sehwag's batting style, Inzamam pointed out a similarity in Pant.

"I have played with Sehwag and he too didn't bother about other factors. When he used to bat, it didn't matter to him how the pitch behaved or what kind of bowling attack the opponent had. He just had to play his strokes, even if the fielders were on the boundary. After Sehwag, I have seen such a player, for whom nothing else matters," Inzamam added.

According to Inzamam, Pant is a rare cricketer as the level of confidence he possesses is remarkable, probably better than some of the big players Indian cricket has produced over the years.

"Ever since I've noted, it's not that he's only doing it in India, he did it in Australia too. He didn't get to score centuries because he plays at his own pace. After a long time, I have seen such a player. India had Sachin, Dravid… now they have Virat and Rohit. But the way he plays, it's amazing. The kind of self-confidence he has is surprising. I haven't come across a player like him in cricket," said Inzamam.

India were in trouble after losing four wickets with 80 runs on board when Rishabh Pant came into bat. Despite losing Rohit and Ashwin, Pant stitched a 113-run stand with Sundar and also smashed a quick 100.

The left-hander's century put India in the driver's seat. In his column on the Daily Mail, Lloyd questioned England if they have a player who can produce such an innings.

"The excellence of Jimmy Anderson and Ben Stokes kept England in this game for the first two sessions, but, boy, do they need support. That innings from Rishabh Pant turned the match on its head," Lloyd wrote.

"It was exhilarating. He bided his time, then went after Anderson. That reverse-sweep over the slips was outrageous," Lloyd added.

"Have England got a player who can produce that kind of innings? I think they have: Jos Buttler. But he’s at home," Lloyd said.

"When he comes back, I just hope they take the shackles off him. Having a hitter in your side can win you Tests," Lloyd signed off.

India were bowled out on 365 with Sundar missing his maiden international ton by a whisker. England, who are trailing by 130 runs, have already lost four big wickets with just 30 runs on-board.

Former England captain Michael Vaughan lauded Rishabh Pant for his wicket-keeping in the second Test match was India's biggest positive out of the match, however, he also believes that the 23-year-old has a long way to go before he can be a good and consistent keeper in the world.

Rishabh Pant's wicket-keeping has been subject to criticism due to several missed catches and opportunities. But two brilliant stumpings and catches in the recently-concluded Test reflected the hard work the young southpaw has put behind the stumps.

Vaughan, however, feels one Test is not enough to call Pant a good wicketkeeper. "I will be honest. I think the biggest positive for the Indian team for Rishabh's keeping. I think that had been a massive question mark over the Indian team," Vaughan told Cricbuzz.

"Can they be the best in the world over a generation? You can't beat if your wicketkeeper is dropping the ball. That's a fact. You just can't. You need to keep a hold of the ball... stumpings, catches. Be very active behind the stumps."

"We know that he's active because he's always a little bit chirpy and that's fine. But you've got to be able to catch the ball. His keeping in this game has been very, very good and that for me has been a massive positive for the Indian team. He needs to continue to work and get better, and catch a majority of the balls that come his way, and do it with better technique," Vaughan added.

"I think it's getting better all the time and he's probably doing a lot of work on the training ground - he's still got a long way to become a real, consistent keeper. One good Test match behind the stumps doesn't make you a good wicketkeeper. He's got to do it again."

Pant was heard saying things like My name is Washington and I wanna go DC’ and called out Cheteshwar Pujara as ‘Pujinder’ during the first Test against England.
