The Delhi government announced on Saturday that it has mandated an extensive expansion of the Metro rail network of the city, with plans afoot to add more than 97 kilometres of new lines and 65 stations along seven corridors under the Phase V(B) plan. In response, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta stated that the project, with an estimated cost of Rs 48,204.56 crore, is aimed at improving connectivity between the outskirts and emerging parts of the Capital with central Delhi. Officials indicated that four out of seven corridors have been formulated as priority projects and will be taken up with a speedy response. The government has set a target to complete these corridors by 2029. The CM also stated that the DMRC will divide the detailed project reports (DPRs) into priority and non-priority ones for effective and phased implementation. “This project will play a key role in ensuring balanced and inclusive urban development across Delhi,” she said. The Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the entire project has been completed and submitted to the Centre, where it is currently awaiting Cabinet approval. Earlier this week, the Delhi government cleared the proposal after a detailed meeting between the Chief Minister and Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC), officials said. Once approved, both the Centre and the Delhi government will need to sanction funding before construction can begin. The DMRC did not respond to requests for comment.
Metro with multiple interchange points
The expansion plan is set to bring areas such as Najafgarh, Narela, Mithapur and Khera Kalan onto the Metro map, connecting them to the existing lines. The project will feature a combination of elevated and underground corridors, along with multiple interchange points designed to integrate the new lines with existing ones. “The initiative will significantly enhance access to public transport in underserved areas. This expansion will connect far-flung and fast-growing areas of Delhi to the Metro network, ensuring faster, safer and more convenient travel for residents,” Gupta said. The Dhansa Bus Stand-Nangloi corridor, spanning 11.859km, will be a fully elevated route with nine stations. It will connect Naresh Park Extension, Ranhola, Bakkarwala, Baprola, Dichaon Kalan and Najafgarh Extension, with interchange facilities at Nangloi on the Green Line and Dhansa Bus Stand on the Grey Line. Another key corridor, from the Central Secretariat to Kishangarh, will span 15.969km, with most of the network underground. The stretch will comprise 10 stations, nine underground and one elevated, and is expected to extend to localities of New Moti Bagh, RK Puram and Jawaharlal Nehru University. Interchanges will be available at the Central Secretariat, Moti Bagh, RK Puram and Kishangarh. Also read: WION Summit| 'India can offer zero-tariff access': Sri Lanka industry leaders call to rethink India–Sri Lanka trade ties

Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta issued strict instructions to all government agencies in the city on Wednesday, warning that any lapse in anti-pollution measures – dust control, road maintenance and construction waste management- will invite criminal action along with heavy penalties against officials found responsible. To ensure visible improvement on the ground, Gupta told departments during a high-level review meeting at the Delhi Secretariat that the government “will not hesitate to fix accountability” within its own machinery. In cases of negligence, she added that FIRs will be launched against government departments, and heads of departments will also be liable with a penalty. The warning of the Delhi CM comes amid the national capital experiencing one of the most toxic stretches of winter in recent years. Since November, Delhi has experienced “very poor” air quality (AQI 300-400) or worse on approximately 30 days. In addition, CM Rekha Gupta has also directed the Delhi Pollution Control Committee (DPCC) to aggressively challenge the air pollution and put a fine on both government bodies and private entities discovered violating anti-pollution rules and regulations, according to officials aware of the meeting. “DPCC will be filing FIRs against departments involved in unauthorised road-cutting or delayed repairs. Department heads will be personally answerable. All potholes must be identified, repaired and geo-tagged with photographs uploaded within 72 hours. No government or private agency will be spared if it fails in its duty towards pollution mitigation,” Gupta said, HT reported. The meeting was attended by Delhi environment minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa, chief secretary Rajiv Verma and senior officials from Public Works Department (PWD), Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC), Delhi Development Authority (DDA), Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD), NBCC, the power department, DUSIB and other key agencies. Each department received targeted instructions to tackle dust, debris and road-related pollution.
What major steps were taken by officials?
Meanwhile, PWD was told to fast-track repairs on its 1,400-km road network, where damaged stretches and temporary fixes often generate dust. DDA was asked to enhance cleanliness along its roads, clear waste from vacant plots, and expedite the handover of markets to MCD for improved maintenance. Public transport infrastructure was also reviewed. The chief minister directed DMRC to level and restore road sections beneath elevated corridors, noting that uneven surfaces are a major dust source. “Clean, green and dust-free roads are the most crucial and immediate component of our anti-pollution strategy,” Gupta said. Environment minister Sirsa updated the chief minister on new monitoring features added to the Green Delhi App, now linked with the city’s Green War Room. The government has failed to stop pollution," he said, ANI reported. Bharadwaj further accused the BJP government of "misleading" the public, claiming that it had failed to initiate the promised artificial rain in Delhi. No, my question is that if you could have conducted artificial rain, then why didn't you do it? Do you want people to fall ill?" he asked.
BJP's response to AAP
The BJP, meanwhile, attributed the pollution crisis to stubble burning in neighbouring states. Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta has landed in fresh controversy after her husband, Manish Gupta, was seen attending a government meeting on Sunday (September 7). A source from Tihar Jail was quoted by news agency PTI, "We had also asked for space in Baprola, but due to encroachment, we couldn't get that. However, we have written to the Delhi government to provide 100 acres of land somewhere else. Jail Numbers 1 to 9 are designed to house approximately 5,000 inmates, but these accommodate over 12,000 prisoners at present, the source said."

Jail Number 4 in Tihar and 12 in Mandoli Jail are known as 'Mulaija Jail' which means first-time offenders. We have a large number of inmates in these two jails,” the source added.
