Chaos in Pakistan cricket? Audit report finds possible corruption worth millions

The first edition of the World Club Championship will feature only five teams, with no mention of any Indian Premier League team's participation. In a massive blow for IPL 20245 winners, they will not participate in the inaugural edition. Although the Indian Cricket Board (BCCI) supports this tournament idea, they are unlikely to have a team representing them. The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has forcefully postponed the ongoing PSL 2025 after failing to crack a deal with the Emirates Cricket Board (ECB) over hosting the remainder of their matches in their country, per the latest report. This development came hours after its counterpart, the BCCI, suspended IPL 2025 amid escalating cross-border tensions between India and Pakistan.
The 10th edition of the PSL was moved out of Pakistan following prevailing tensions between the arch-rivals. The remaining eight matches, scheduled in Rawalpindi, Multan and Lahore, were later said to be relocated to the UAE; however, strong speculations over a failed deal between both clubs, as carried out by Cricbuzz, forced the PCB to put the tournament on hold.

Indo-Pak War: PCB forced to postpone PSL 2025 after failing to crack deal with UAE Cricket – Report

The Pahalgam terror attack has led to dark clouds not just over India-Pakistan cross-border relations but also on the ongoing Pakistan Super League (PSL) 2025 proceedings. After a horrifying terrorist attack in India&rsquo;s &lsquo;Mini Switzerland&rsquo; that killed at least 27 innocent people, India and Pakistan took dire steps to cut down any ties between them. It reached the cricket arena with uncertainties looming over <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/psl" rel="dofollow">PSL 2025</a> after reports suggested that the PCB has decided to deport a dozen key Indian broadcasters for the tournament.
After India&rsquo;s robust response to the deadliest attack on its soil since the 2019 Pulwama bombing that killed 40 CRPF personnel, Pakistan retaliated, immediately suspending the roles of around a dozen Indian broadcasters in their premier T20 tournament underway in the country.

Per the latest reports, the Pakistan Government directed its cricket board to send back any Indian national working on PSL&rsquo;s broadcast production. Following the orders, at least 12 Indian working nationals aligned with a foreign production company handling the tournament&rsquo;s live telecast would leave the country sooner.
The decision, however, could hamper PSL&rsquo;s broadcast proceedings with several matches left in this edition. This move could disrupt the league&rsquo;s broadcast operations as the Indian crew, asked to leave, was a key part of their production setup contracted through a third-party international company.
Besides, the National Security Council of Pakistan has announced that all Indian passport holders shall leave the country within the next 48 hours. Also, FanCode, India&rsquo;s streaming platform for PSL, has immediately suspended the tournament telecast effective April 24.

Pakistan will not travel to India for 2025 Women’s ODI World Cup: PCB’s Mohsin Naqvi

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) on Monday (April 7) firmly dismissed rumors suggesting that Chairman <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/mohsin-naqvi">Mohsin Naqvi</a> is stepping down from his role following his recent appointment as President of the Asian Cricket Council (ACC).

Speculation had been swirling in cricket circles that Naqvi might resign after Pakistan&rsquo;s underwhelming performances in New Zealand, where they suffered a 1-4 defeat in the T20I series and a 0-3 whitewash in the ODIs&mdash;just weeks after a disappointing campaign in the Champions Trophy.

In a shocking turn of events following Pakistan's ODI series loss to New Zealand, middle-order batter <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/khushdil-shah">Khushdil Shah</a> was involved in a physical altercation with fans at the stadium, prompting immediate intervention from security personnel and a formal statement from the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/pakistan-cricket-board">Pakistan Cricket Board</a> (PCB).
The incident occurred moments after Pakistan's narrow defeat in the final ODI of the series. Visibly distraught by the team&rsquo;s performance and taunts from a group of spectators near the boundary line, Shah appeared to lose his temper. According to multiple eyewitness accounts and video footage circulating on social media, the 29-year-old cricketer jumped over the barricades to confront fans who were allegedly hurling personal abuse and derogatory remarks targeting not only Shah but also other Pakistani players.

Security officials had to step in quickly to restrain Shah, dragging him away from the altercation as tensions escalated. The situation was eventually brought under control without any reported injuries, but the footage of the confrontation has gone viral, sparking widespread debate on social media.
Eyewitnesses reported that the verbal exchange quickly turned physical as Shah, visibly furious, tried to get close to the heckling group. While no punches were confirmed to have landed, his aggressive stance and the need for forceful restraint have raised serious concerns regarding player conduct and spectator behavior.

The PCB responded swiftly, releasing an official statement. It said, "While we understand the frustration of our players in the face of provocative and abusive behavior, physical retaliation is unacceptable. Meanwhile, fans and former cricketers are divided over the incident. Some have condemned Shah&rsquo;s actions, calling them unprofessional and damaging to the image of <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/pakistan-cricket">Pakistan cricket</a>, while others have expressed sympathy, citing increasing fan toxicity and lack of proper protection for players.
This is not the first time cricketers have faced the heat from passionate and sometimes unruly fans, especially after disappointing performances. However, such direct confrontations remain rare and highly controversial.
As the PCB investigates the matter, Khushdil Shah&rsquo;s future in the national setup could face scrutiny. With emotions running high both on and off the field, this episode has cast a shadow over what was already a difficult series for Pakistan.

Corbin Bosch had no plans whatsoever of playing in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 season. He had already been selected in Pakistan Super League (PSL) as a diamond pick. About two weeks before the start of IPL 2025 though, Mumbai Indians suffered an injury setback when Lizaad Williams was ruled out and Bosch was signed up subsequently by MI as replacement.
While the all-rounder is yet to play a game in IPL 2025, he made an impact anyway on the field as a substitute during the game against Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) on Friday (Apr 4). Fielding at mid-off he took a stunning catch to dismiss LSG skipper Rishabh Pant whose horror run continued in fourth straight match of IPL. Have a look at the catch below:

For joining the IPL, he was reprimanded by Pakistan-based PSL where he was supposed to play for Peshawar Zalmi. Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) served a legal notice to Bosch for opting out to play in IPL.
"The legal notice was served through his agent, and the player has been asked to justify his actions of withdrawing from his professional and contractual commitments. The PCB management has also outlined the repercussions of his departure from the league and expects his response within the stipulated time frame. The PCB will not make any further comments on the matter," read a PCB statement.
Notably, this is the first time when PSL, which will be played from April 11 to May 18, will overlap with IPL, which is being played from March 22 to May 25.
As for Bosch, he came to IPL anyway after spending three seasons with different IPL-backed franchises in SA20. He played his first season with Paarl Royals before moving to Pretoria Capitals in 2023/24 and then MICT in last season.
He has also played in Caribbean Premier League (CPL) for Barbados Royals in 2022 and St Kitts and Nevis Patriots in 2023. He was also part of Rajasthan Royals as a reserve player in the past but is yet to make IPL debut.
Overall, Bosch has played 86 T20s and has scored 663 runs at a strike rate of 113. He also has 59 wickets to his name with a best of 4/19.

The Pakistan Cricket Board's (PCB) Chief Operating Officer, Sumair Ahmed, has criticised the International Cricket Council (ICC) for the mismanagement during the final presentation ceremony of the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/champions-trophy">Champions Trophy</a> in Dubai.
Despite PCB CEO Sumair Ahmed being present at the venue, no Pakistan representative was invited onto the podium during the ceremony. Speaking at an event in Lahore, Sumair attributed this oversight to the ICC&rsquo;s mismanagement.
"It was a result of mismanagement on the part of the ICC, and everyone knows who was involved. We did not take the matter positively," he remarked.
Sumair revealed that he had attended the final in Dubai under the instructions of PCB Chairman <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/mohsin-naqvi">Mohsin Naqvi</a>. However, he confirmed that the ICC had not provided a satisfactory response to PCB&rsquo;s request for an explanation regarding the incident.
"We asked for an explanation from the ICC, but the response was unsatisfactory, so we have sent another letter seeking clarification," he added.

Addressing another issue, Sumair also confirmed that one of the newly upgraded roofs at Gaddafi Stadium leaked during the Champions Trophy. Heavy rain during the Australia-Afghanistan match in Lahore exposed the flaw.
He attributed the problem to the contractor responsible for the renovation.&nbsp;"We have claimed damages, and the issue has been rectified by the same contractor," he said.
<h2>PCB warns BCCI of financial repercussions</h2>
Following the conclusion of the Champions Trophy 2025, reports have emerged suggesting that Pakistan, as the tournament host, had suffered significant financial losses. However, PCB officials pushed back against these claims, asserting that the board expects to earn approximately $10 million in profit from the tournament, which saw India emerge as the champion.
PCB spokesperson Aamir Mir and chief financial officer (CFO) Javed Murtaza accused the Indian media of spreading negative publicity.
Aamir Mir also issued a warning to the BCCI, stating that any financial setbacks faced by Pakistan would ultimately impact India as well.
"All decisions are made by the ICC. If India has tried to harm Pakistan, then they will also pay the price. Everyone knows that an India-Pakistan match sells like hot cakes. Over the next three years, Pakistan will not travel to India. If Pakistan faces financial losses, India will suffer even more with Pakistan not playing in India," Mir said during a press conference.&nbsp;

However, the report also claims that the PCB heavily fined Jamal to set an example for others to stay away from it than specifically punishing them for a disciplinary breach.

PCB slaps huge fine on Pakistan seamer for slogan supporting Imran Khan

The Champions Trophy 2025, Pakistan&rsquo;s first global cricket event in nearly three decades, turned into a massive financial and logistical failure. The <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/pakistan-cricket-board">Pakistan Cricket Board</a> (PCB) suffered an 85 per cent loss after investing $100 million but hosting only one completed home match.
<h2>Financial setback</h2>
According to The Telegraph, the PCB spent PKR 18 billion ($58 million) upgrading three venues&mdash;Rawalpindi, Lahore, and Karachi&mdash;exceeding their budget by 50 per cent. An additional $40 million was spent on event preparations. However, the revenue generated from hosting fees, ticket sales, and sponsorships amounted to just $6 million, leading to a staggering $85 million loss.

Pakistan played only one match at home against New Zealand at Lahore&rsquo;s&nbsp;<a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/gaddafi-stadium" rel="dofollow">Gaddafi Stadium</a>. Their game against Bangladesh in Rawalpindi was washed out without a toss, while two of the remaining eight matches held in Pakistan met the same fate.
In the aftermath, Pakistani cricketers faced severe pay cuts. Match fees in the National T20 Championship were slashed by 90 per cent, and reserve player payments saw an 87.5 per cent reduction. While players were shifted to budget accommodations, Pakistan Cricket Board officials reportedly continued drawing hefty salaries.
According to Dawn, match fees were reduced from $460 to $115 without any official announcement. However, Pakistan Cricket Board Chairman <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/mohsin-naqvi">Mohsin Naqvi</a> later intervened, revising the amount to $345 per match, still $115 lower than the previous year.
Despite the investment, the tournament saw shockingly low attendance, especially in matches involving the Pakistan cricket team.
The opening game between Pakistan and New Zealand in Karachi had significant empty stands, a sight that was unexpected for a cricket-loving nation. Security concerns, high ticket prices, lack of promotional efforts, and the team&rsquo;s dismal on-field performances contributed to the diminishing interest among fans.

PCB serves legal notice to Corbin Bosch for ditching PSL for IPL

Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chief Mohsin Naqvi has ordered the review of recent pay cut for the players in the National T20 Cup. The PCB, on March 12, announced 75 percent pay cut for the players and reserves for the upcoming domestic tournament. The decision to review the pay cut came a day later on March 13 amid criticism about the decision, reported news agency PTI.&nbsp;
The PCB had announced reduced match fess of PKR 10,000 ($35 approx) - down 75% from PKR 40,000 ($142) for the players and PKR 5,000 ($17) from PKR 20,000 ($70) for the reserves. The match fees of PKR 40,000 is still less than in 2022 when the players were paid PKR 60,000 ($213).

After the announcement of pay cut decision, many former cricketers raised the question whether the board is going through a financial instability.
The decision of pay cut came despite PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi&rsquo;s earlier statements emphasising financial investment in cricket. Shortly after assuming office, Naqvi had stated that PCB funds should be spent on player development rather than being 'locked away'.
"We'll try to make the best available for you. I have told the Pakistan Cricket Board our job is not to save money or keep it hoarded away, but to spend it on cricket, from grassroots right through to the national team. The money will be spent on your fitness, training and coaches rather than keeping it locked away," Naqvi had said days after his appointment as PCB chairman last year.
A Pakistan Cricket Board official had told ESPNcricinfo that the fee reduction is not due to financial constraints but is based on the board&rsquo;s belief that players now have more earning opportunities with an expanded domestic calendar.
The National T20 Cup is set to begin on March 14, featuring 39 matches across Faisalabad, Lahore, and Multan, with the final scheduled for March 27 in Faisalabad.

PCB slashes 75% of player's match fee for National T20 Cup

The <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/pakistan-cricket-board" rel="dofollow">Pakistan Cricket Board</a> (PCB) is seeking a formal explanation from the International Cricket Council (<a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/icc">ICC</a>) regarding the absence of its representative from the closing ceremony of the recently-concluded Champions Trophy in Dubai.
India secured their third <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/champions-trophy" rel="dofollow">Champions Trophy</a> title on Sunday (March 9) with a four-wicket win over New Zealand. However, controversy arose when PCB Chief Operating Officer (COO) Sumair Ahmed, who also served as the tournament director, was not invited on stage for the final presentation.
"We have lodged a formal complaint with the ICC, as this incident is completely unacceptable to us," a PCB official said on Tuesday (March 11).

During the ceremony, BCCI President Roger Binny presented the white jackets to the Indian players, while ICC Chairman Jay Shah handed the trophy to captain Rohit Sharma and awarded medals to the winners. BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia and New Zealand Cricket CEO Roger Twose were also present on stage.
"The explanations given for excluding our COO and tournament director make no sense. We are awaiting a formal clarification and an apology," the PCB official added.
Expressing frustration over the matter, the official called it a 'blatant disregard' for Pakistan's role as the host nation. He emphasised that the Pakistan Cricket Board had informed the ICC in advance about Sumair Ahmed's presence at the ceremony, and he had even interacted with ICC Chairman Jay Shah and BCCI officials after India's win.
"Claims that only CEOs, chairpersons, vice-chairpersons, or secretaries are invited to such ceremonies are illogical. We demand a public clarification and assurance that such biased treatment will not be repeated. Otherwise, we will escalate this matter to the board of governors," the official warned.

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is seeking a formal explanation from the International Cricket Council (ICC) regarding the absence of its representative from the closing ceremony of the recently-concluded Champions Trophy in Dubai. India secured their third Champions Trophy title on Sunday (March 9) with a four-wicket win over New Zealand. PCB files official complaint with ICC over closing ceremony snub

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) expressed displeasure over the ICC's omission of its CEO from the Champions Trophy closing ceremony. Despite hosting the event, no PCB representative was included. The PCB plans to address the matter with the ICC.

Chairman <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/mohsin-naqvi">Mohsin Naqvi</a> was not happy with the ICC&rsquo;s explanation that Ahmed was left out because the governing body had initially planned for Naqvi to be on stage. When Naqvi did not attend the final, the ICC reportedly adjusted its plans, sources close to the development said.
Pakistan has rejected this justification, citing multiple instances where the ICC allegedly overlooked Pakistan&rsquo;s role as the tournament&rsquo;s host nation. The PCB highlighted errors such as the incorrect display of the CT2025 logo during the India-Bangladesh match and the accidental playing of the Indian national anthem during the Australia-England match in Lahore. The ICC later attributed the anthem mix-up to a playlist error, saying that it was corrected within seconds.

Champions Trophy: Pakistan to protest ICC’s ‘snub’ during closing ceremony; PCB chief reacts

Former Pakistan pacer Shoaib Akhtar has called out Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) for missing out on the presentation ceremony after the Champions Trophy 2025 final. The PCB were the official host of the tournament, with India playing its matches in Dubai. In the final held at Dubai International Stadium on Sunday (Mar 9), India beat New Zealand by four wickets to win their third CT title and second consecutive ICC trophy.
At the presentation ceremony, no member from the host nation was present, which did not sit well with Akhtar.
Taking to social media platform X, Akhtar said: "It is a weird thing that I have observed that no PCB member was present at the ceremony. Pakistan are the host of Champions Trophy and no member is present here (at the ceremony). This is beyond my understanding. Why no one came to represent or present the trophy, it is beyond me. Think about it please. This is the world stage, you (PCB) should have been here but sadly I could not see any Pakistan Cricket Board member out there. It is hosted by us yet there's nobody there, think about this."

As for the match, India chased down the target of 252 with one over and four wickets to spare to win the title.
India won the tournament without losing a single match. They had beaten Bangladesh, Pakistan and New Zealand in the group stage, Australia in the semis and again Kiwis in the final.
This is the third time India have won the Champions Trophy title. They had previously shared it with Sri Lanka in 2002 under Sourav Ganguly and won it in 2013 under MS Dhoni.
With the win, India now are the only team in world cricket history to have won at least two titles in each of the white-ball tournaments - T20 World Cup, ODI World Cup and Champions Trophy.

'It's hosted by us': Shoaib Akhtar hits out at PCB for giving a miss to Champions Trophy final presentation ceremony

When Pakistan secured the hosting rights for the ICC <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/champions-trophy" rel="dofollow">Champions Trophy</a> 2025, it was seen as a moment of resurgence for the South Asian nation's cricketing landscape. The&nbsp;<a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/pakistan-cricket-board">Pakistan Cricket Board</a> (PCB) and government went all in, allocating massive funds to renovate stadiums, improve infrastructure, and ensure a world-class tournament. However, as the event wraps up on Sunday (Mar 9) outside Pakistan, the breakdown of the tournament has left the country with more questions than answers, both on and off the field.
<h2>Billions spent in hopes of glory</h2>
The PCB reportedly spent PKR 12.8 billion on stadium renovations alone, including upgrades to National Bank Stadium (Karachi), Gaddafi Stadium (Lahore), and Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium. Initial reports suggested an overall allocation of PKR 8 billion for the entire event, but costs quickly escalated due to last-minute security and logistical demands. In addition, Pakistan was set to receive USD 70 million (approx. PKR 19.5 billion) from the ICC for hosting the event, but financial concerns mounted due to unexpected expenditures.
<h2>Empty seats and poor turnout</h2>
Despite the investment, the tournament saw shockingly low attendance, especially in matches involving the Pakistan cricket team. The opening game between Pakistan and New Zealand in Karachi had significant empty stands, a sight that was unexpected for a cricket-loving nation. Security concerns, high ticket prices, lack of promotional efforts, and the team&rsquo;s dismal on-field performances contributed to the diminishing interest among fans.
A particular low point was Pakistan&rsquo;s defeat to New Zealand in Karachi, a match where local support was expected to be high. Instead, sections of the stadium were visibly empty, leading experts to question whether the tournament had truly captured the public&rsquo;s imagination.
<h2>Pakistan&rsquo;s on-field disaster</h2>
The Pakistan team&rsquo;s poor performance added insult to injury. Expected to make a good run in the tournament and being the defending champions, <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/mohammad-rizwan">Mohammed Rizwan</a> and his team struggled against top teams, failing to reach the knockout stages. Their underwhelming show further dampened the enthusiasm of local supporters, leading to fewer ticket sales and a general sense of disappointment.
<h2>PCB&rsquo;s financial woes</h2>
The PCB, already dealing with financial concerns before the tournament, found itself in further turmoil as costs spiraled. Reports suggested that PCB chairman <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/mohsin-naqvi">Mohsin Naqvi</a> had to sell his own PKR 3.5 crore VIP ticket for the India-Pakistan match to generate funds. With revenue from ticket sales failing to meet expectations and the cost of stadium renovations exceeding initial projections, the financial strain on Pakistan cricket is now greater than ever.
<h2>Was it worth the trouble?</h2>
With billions spent, dwindling crowds, and an early Pakistan exit from the tournament, the Champions Trophy 2025 turned out to be a financial and sporting disaster for the country. The PCB now faces tough questions about whether the investment was justified. While hosting a major ICC event was a significant achievement, the lack of public engagement and the team&rsquo;s disappointing performance overshadowed the positives.
In hindsight, the Champions Trophy was a high-risk bet that didn&rsquo;t pay off as expected. The lessons from this tournament will be crucial for Pakistan if it hopes to successfully host major events in the future without facing a financial crisis.
Meanwhile, a source close to the PCB said that officials were disappointed with the team's performance in the tournament, particularly in the match against arch-rivals India.
"The board leadership acknowledges that there is no justification or defense for the team's dismal showing," the source said.&nbsp;Pakistan is set to tour New Zealand for a white-ball series starting on March 15, while Aaqib Javed&rsquo;s tenure as interim head coach concluded on February 27.
"As a result, the PCB will need to appoint a head coach for the New Zealand tour. However, this appointment may also be temporary, possibly selecting someone from the National High-Performance Centre, as the board has yet to initiate the process of hiring a permanent head coach," the source added.
The PCB is expected to finalise a new head coach before the commencement of the next ICC World Test Championship cycle in August.

Billions spent for stadium revamp, empty stands: Pakistan’s Champions Trophy disaster

Former Australia quick <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/jason-gillespie" rel="dofollow">Jason Gillespie</a> has called Pakistan head coach and selector Aaqib Javed a clown for lying in a social media post. Days after <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/champions-trophy" rel="dofollow">Champions Trophy 2025</a> host Pakistan got ruled out of the tournament following their winless run in Group A, Aaqib lamented too many changes within the board lately, leading to uncertainties among the players, as one of the reasons for the team's early exit in the home event.
After losing to New Zealand and India in their first two matches, Pakistan was on the brink of a shock exit, with a washout against Bangladesh confirming it. Addressing the media on his team&rsquo;s performance and decline, Aaqib said quick changes within the management hampered the team&rsquo;s consistency across formats, leading to their slow death as an Asian powerhouse.
