Shukla&rsquo;s visit holds particular significance in light of the BCCI&rsquo;s earlier decision not to send the Indian men&rsquo;s team to Pakistan for the tournament, citing government directives. This led to prolonged negotiations between the BCCI and PCB over hosting arrangements, ultimately resulting in the adoption of India playing at a neutral venue. Under this, when either India or Pakistan hosts a multi-nation tournament over the next three years, matches involving the two arch-rivals will be played at neutral venues. For the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/champions-trophy">Champions Trophy</a> 2025, Dubai was selected as the neutral location.
While no formal discussions between the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/board-of-control-for-cricket-in-india">BCCI</a> and PCB have been confirmed during the visit, Shukla&rsquo;s presence in Lahore is seen as a potential step toward improving cricketing relations between the two nations, hinting at a willingness for dialogue and future collaboration.

Former India cricketer Mohammed Kaif has blasted the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) for poor facilities at the Champions Trophy venues. He also asked for accountability amid poor rain management of the Rawalpindi stadium during Champions Trophy Group B match between South Africa and Australia on Tuesday (Feb 25).
Kaif asked if the &ldquo;money given by the ICC has been used&rdquo; after pictures showed that most of the ground except the pitch and nearby area was left uncovered.

<h2>Group B open for all teams</h2>
After the washout of the game between Australia and South Africa, all four teams in Group B remain in contention of making it to the semis. The top two teams will advance to the next round, with India and New Zealand already through from Group A.
Currently, South Africa and Australia are at three points each after two games and have one game each left. England and Afghanistan, on the other hand, have played one game each and face each other on Wednesday (Feb 26).
England and Afghanistan match result, barring a washout, will send the losing team out of semis contention. If England win the match against Afghanistan and against South Africa afterwards, they'll be through to semis. In that case, South Africa would have to hope for Australia to lose against Afghanistan by a huge margin, else Australia will be through to the semis.
In case Afghanistan win the match against England, that will send Jos Buttler-led side home packing and South Africa almost in semis. Australia, on the other hand, would have to win their game against Afghanistan else they'd be hoping for England to beat South Africa and then fight over net run-rate for a place in the semis.

After Australia pacer Pat Cummins, former England skippers Nasser Hussain and Michael Atherton are crying foul over India playing all its matches in Dubai, UAE. All other teams, including those in Group A, have to play their matches across three venues in Pakistan except against India. The former English skippers have called it an 'undeniable advantage.'
"What about the advantage India have in playing in Dubai, only in Dubai? Which seems to me to be a hard-to-quantify advantage, but an undeniable advantage,&rdquo; said Atherton in conversation with Hussain on Sky Sports Podcast.

Champions Trophy: After Cummins, ex-England skippers cry foul over India playing matches in Dubai

Former Pakistan fast bowler <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/shoaib-akhtar">Shoaib Akhtar</a> did not hold back his frustration following Pakistan's six-wicket loss to India in their ICC <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/champions-trophy">Champions Trophy</a> 2025 clash at the Dubai International Stadium on Sunday. The defeat has virtually ended Pakistan&rsquo;s campaign as defending champions, and Akhtar&rsquo;s emotional reaction quickly went viral on social media.
Speaking candidly, Akhtar admitted he had lost interest in discussing Pakistan cricket. "If I wasn&rsquo;t getting paid, I wouldn&rsquo;t even talk about Pakistan cricket. Honestly, I have nothing to do with them anymore. I am invited to speak, so I do, but I have no agenda against them. Why should I waste my time?" he said in a viral video that has sparked intense debate among the cricketing fans.

The legendary pacer from Rawalpindi was particularly scathing in his criticism of Pakistan team management, calling them 'brainless and clueless'. He questioned their tactical decisions, especially the selection of only five bowlers when most teams opt for six. "You go with two all-rounders, but this is just poor management. I&rsquo;m really disappointed," he futher added.
However, Akhtar sympathised with the players, arguing that their struggles stem from a lack of clear direction. "We can&rsquo;t blame the kids. The players are only as good as their management. They don&rsquo;t know what to do. They lack the skillsets of Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and&nbsp;<a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/shubman-gill">Shubman</a>. Neither do they understand the game, nor does the management."
Despite his frustration with Pakistan&rsquo;s performance, Akhtar reserved high praise for Indian batter <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/virat-kohli">Virat Kohli</a>, who led India to victory with an unbeaten 100 off 111 balls. "Hats off to him, he&rsquo;s a superstar, a modern-day great. I really hope he reaches 100 international centuries," he signed off.

Champions Trophy 2025: Shoaib Akhtar rips into Pakistan’s tactics after crushing loss to India

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has sought an explanation from the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/icc">International Cricket Council</a> (ICC) after India's national anthem was briefly played at the start of the Australia-England <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/champions-trophy">Champions Trophy</a> match in Lahore on Saturday (Feb 22).
As the two teams lined up for their national anthems, spectators were momentarily surprised when the Indian anthem played for a fraction of a second before being stopped. The <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/pakistan-cricket-board">PCB</a> has blamed the ICC for the mix-up and has formally written to the governing body, demanding clarification.
A source close to the ICC confirmed that the PCB&rsquo;s letter outlined the incident and sought accountability.

<h2>'ICC must explain the error'</h2>
"The PCB has emphasized that the ICC must explain the error, as their officials are responsible for managing the national anthem playlist during the Champions Trophy. Given that India is not playing in Pakistan, it is difficult to understand how their anthem was mistakenly played," the source said.
India had refused to travel to Pakistan due to security concerns and is playing its share of Champions Trophy matches in Dubai. The two arch-rivals are set to face off on Sunday in a crucial game, where a Pakistan loss would mean elimination from the tournament.
This is not the first grievance raised by the PCB during the tournament. Earlier, the board had also written to the ICC regarding Pakistan's name logo not being displayed on television screens during India's match against Bangladesh in Dubai. The ICC later assured the PCB that it was an unintentional mistake and confirmed that all Dubai matches would feature the correct three-line horizontal logo, including Pakistan's name.
Coming to the game, England's Ben Duckett scripted history with the highest individual score in Champions Trophy history, smashing 165 runs to set up a formidable total of 351/8 against Australia at the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore.
After being put in to bat by Steve Smith, England overcame early setbacks with a solid 158-run stand between Duckett and Joe Root (68). The duo anchored the innings through the middle overs, displaying improved batting tactics compared to their recent struggles in India.

Per the latest report, the ICC is believed to have informed the PCB about this being a technical glitch; the answer has left the PCB dissatisfied. Given that the graphics are designed in advance and provided to the ICC live feed (in advance), Pakistan&rsquo;s name missing from the broadcasting logo has left the board unconvinced over this issue.
Meanwhile, the ICC has maintained its stance of technical malfunction as the reason behind this, assuring the PCB that this issue will not occur again regardless of whether the matches take place in Pakistan or the UAE. The next game in the UAE is between two Asian giants and arch-rivals India and Pakistan this coming Sunday (Feb 23).&nbsp;

After their first match, Pakistan take on arch-rivals India on Feb 23 in Dubai. India and Pakistan's political tensions led to India being denied permission to travel to Pakistan by the BCCI. As a result, all of India's matches will now be played in Dubai (UAE).
The UAE city will also host the first semi-final on March 4 irrespective of India qualifying for it. Dubai will also host the final if India make it to the title game.
The second semi-final (Mar 5) although, will be played in Lahore - also the venue of the final if India don't make it that far.
The BCCI, meanwhile, launched the India jersey for the upcoming Champions Trophy on Tuesday (Feb 17). The jersey, which was the centre of much drama over the possible use of Pakistan's flag, contains the name of the host nation and not the flag.&nbsp;

Champions Trophy 2025: Colourful opening ceremony held in Lahore sans team captains

As Pakistan gears up to host its first ICC event in 29 years, legendary batter Muhammad Yousuf has expressed his excitement and confidence in the national team&rsquo;s chances on home turf.
The <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/champions-trophy">Champions Trophy</a>&nbsp;is set to start with Pakistan facing New Zealand at Karachi's National Stadium on Wednesday (Feb 19).
Yousuf lauded the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) for its remarkable effort in renovating stadiums in record time, calling it a testament to the board's dedication to elevating the sport. &ldquo;I am very excited, like any Pakistani. After 29 years, Pakistan is hosting an <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/icc">ICC</a> event,&rdquo; Yousuf was quoted saying to Samaa TV.

"Kudos to the PCB for renovating all the stadiums within six months. If Pakistan reaches the final, they will play at home. I hope Pakistan cricket performs as well as the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/pcb">PCB</a> has worked to prepare the stadiums.&rdquo;
<h2>'Kiwis look like the most balanced team'</h2>
Despite the excitement, Yousuf remains realistic about the challenges ahead, acknowledging New Zealand and India as the two most balanced teams in the competition. He noted New Zealand's adaptability to subcontinent conditions, citing their solid top order, well-rounded spin attack, and quality fast bowlers.
&ldquo;New Zealand looks like the most balanced side. They have a strong lineup for subcontinent conditions, with three quality fast bowlers and good spinners. Their top six in batting is solid, and the wicketkeeper is an all-rounder, supported by two spin-bowling all-rounders,&rdquo; Yousuf observed.
India, too, presents a formidable challenge, but Yousuf believes Pakistan&rsquo;s home advantage could be a decisive factor. &ldquo;India has a balanced side as well. But Pakistan has the edge with home conditions. They just need to play calculated cricket throughout the tournament.&rdquo;
Reflecting on Pakistan's recent performances, Yousuf offered valuable advice to the team. "We&rsquo;ve played on turning wickets recently. It&rsquo;s important to find the gaps against the spinners, rotate the strike, and minimize dot balls. We were exposed in the tri-series final against New Zealand, failing to dominate their spinners in the middle overs. With five fielders inside the 30-yard circle, there are always gaps to exploit.&rdquo;

Champions Trophy 2025: 'Pakistan have edge over India due to...', says former Pak captain

With just two days before the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/icc">ICC</a> <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/champions-trophy">Champions Trophy 2025</a>, a video was doing rounds on social media platform X, where the Indian flag was purportedly not hoisted at Karachi's National Bank stadium, one of the ICC tournament venues.
But what is the truth? WION's correspondent in Pakistan, Anas Mallick, has confirmed that the video is from the recently-concluded tri-nation series, which featured hosts Pakistan, South Africa and New Zealand. Hence, no Indian flag. Also, the flags shown in the video are of the teams who are set to practice in Karachi, which explains Afghanistan flag being included.&nbsp;

<h2>India to play at a neutral venue</h2>
The BCCI had previously communicated its decision to the International Cricket Council (ICC), citing the Indian government's refusal to grant clearance for the team's travel to Pakistan. Consequently, a hybrid model was adopted, allowing India to play its matches in Dubai.
The Champions Trophy is set to commence on February 19, with Pakistan hosting New Zealand at Karachi's National Stadium. India's campaign will begin on February 20 against Bangladesh at the Dubai International Stadium. The much-anticipated India-Pakistan clash is scheduled for February 23 in Dubai, a match expected to draw huge viewership across countries.
This incident underscores the ongoing political tensions between the two cricketing nations, adding a complex layer to the tournament's dynamics.

Sports, Cricket: This tournament marks the first time Pakistan will host an ICC event since 1996. The Pakistan leg will feature games in Karachi, Lahore and Rawalpindi

With just two days before the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, a video was doing rounds on social media platform X, where the Indian flag was purportedly not hoisted at Karachi's National Bank stadium, one of the ICC tournament venues. But what is the truth? WION's correspondent in Pakistan, Anas Mallick, has confirmed that the video is from the recently-concluded tri-nation series, which featured hosts Pakistan, South Africa and New Zealand. Hence, no Indian flag. Also, the flags shown in the video are of the teams who are set to practice in Karachi, which explains Afghanistan flag being included. Champions Trophy 2025: No Indian flag in Karachi stadium? What you need to know about the viral controversy

As the date nears for the ICC <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/champions-trophy">Champions Trophy</a> 2025, cricket pundits are analysing the strengths and weaknesses of the competing teams, with Pakistan&mdash;the defending champions&mdash;drawing particular attention.
Former Indian cricketer <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/aakash-chopra">Aakash Chopra</a> shared his insights, highlighting a recurring issue that could haunt Pakistan in the tournament: Their vulnerability under pressure.
Chopra, known for his sharp cricketing analysis, pointed out that while Pakistan possesses immense talent and the ability to produce sensational victories, their perennial inconsistency remains a concern. He noted that this has been a longstanding issue for the team, where moments of brilliance are often accompanied by shocking collapses. &ldquo;Pakistan&rsquo;s unpredictability makes them dangerous, but it also makes them vulnerable,&rdquo; Chopra said on his YouTube channel, saying that mental strength and handling crunch situations could be decisive factors in the marquee tournament.

One of the key aspects Chopra stressed on was Pakistan's tendency to crack in high-pressure games, a pattern that has been observed in several ICC tournaments. Despite their capability to defeat top teams, the squad has often struggled to maintain composure in knockout matches. This psychological hurdle, according to Chopra, is a 'perennial weakness' that the team must address if they hope to defend their title.
<h2>Will Pakistan be a formidable opponent?</h2>
A major test for <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/pakistan-cricket">Pakistan</a> will come on February 23, when they face arch-rivals India in a highly anticipated match in Dubai. Given the intense history between the two teams, the contest will not only test Pakistan's cricketing skills but also their mental fortitude. Chopra hinted that this clash could set the tone for the rest of their campaign, serving as a barometer of whether they have overcome their mental fragility.
Beyond individual games, the larger question for Pakistan remains their ability to string together consistent performances throughout the tournament. The Champions Trophy, known for its competitive format, leaves little room for error, and even a single lapse could prove costly. Chopra advised that, for Pakistan to truly dominate, they must couple their raw talent with strategic discipline and a steely mindset.
As the countdown to the Champions Trophy continues, cricket fans and analysts alike will be watching closely to see if Pakistan can rise above their historical shortcomings and prove themselves as not just unpredictable, but formidable opponents.

Champions Trophy 2025: Former India cricketer pinpoints Pakistan’s achilles' heel

Pakistan's interim head coach Aqib Javed has backed <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/babar-azam">Babar Azam</a> to continue opening the batting as the team prepares for the ICC <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/champions-trophy">Champions Trophy 2025</a>, scheduled from February 19 to March 9.
Following Pakistan's five-wicket loss to New Zealand in the tri-nation ODI series final, Javed addressed concerns about Babar&rsquo;s elevation to the opening slot. He defended the management&rsquo;s decision, highlighting that the move was made to maximise the team's advantage in the powerplay, adding that Babar is well-suited for the role.
Explaining the decision, Javed pointed to past series where Babar often found himself at the crease early, regardless of his batting position. "If you look at our away series against South Africa, Babar had to bat in the first over in every game. Then, when <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/saim-ayub">Saim Ayub</a> got injured, he had to open in Tests as well. These pitches aren&rsquo;t troubling batters early on, so we wanted our best batter to make the most of the powerplay," he stated in a post-match press conference.
Confident in Babar&rsquo;s ability, he added, "I believe Babar should open in these conditions, and I am hopeful he will play a big innings in important matches."
Despite Pakistan securing just one win in three matches in the tri-series, Javed expressed optimism about the team&rsquo;s prospects in the Champions Trophy. He stressed that the squad has all the necessary components to challenge top teams.
"This team has everything it needs to do well in the Champions Trophy. If our batting lineup plays normally, we can score 350 runs consistently down to number eight. With Haris Rauf returning to form alongside Naseem Shah, <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/shaheen-afridi">Shaheen Afridi</a>, and our spinners, we have all the ingredients to defeat any team," he stated.

Javed also defended the selection of Khushdil Shah and Faheem Ashraf, explaining that their inclusion was necessary for balance in an extended tournament.
"We needed both a spin all-rounder and a pace all-rounder, which is why Khushdil and Faheem are part of the squad," he explained.
<h2>Ex-Pak cricketer Basit Ali questions move</h2>
However, former Pakistan cricketer Basit Ali criticised the decision to promote Babar as an opener, especially after the team&rsquo;s disappointing tri-series performance.
Speaking on his YouTube channel, he questioned the move and its impact on both Babar&rsquo;s form and the team's confidence. "If Pakistan had won the tri-nation series, the confidence level of the entire team would have been high," he said.
Basit expressed frustration over the change, arguing that Babar was already excelling at number three and should not have been shifted.
"Who told Babar Azam to open? I am shocked at this decision. What kind of thinking is this? He was scoring 50-70 at number three against South Africa, but they disrupted that as well. Now, just 62 runs in three matches&mdash;this is the approach they are going with?" he lamented.
Pakistan will open their Champions Trophy campaign against New Zealand in the tournament opener on February 19 in Karachi.
With Babar&rsquo;s batting position under scrutiny, his performances in the marquee event will be closely watched.

‘We win, you lose’: PCB Chairman hits back at social media trolls

Pakistan head coach Aaqib Javed, in an apparent dig, asked India to be worried about pacer <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/jasprit-bumrah">Jasprit Bumrah</a>'s fitness. Bumrah had picked up a back injury during the final Test against Australia in Sydney in the first week of January and hasn't bowled since.&nbsp;
The pacer has been included in India's provisional <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/champions-trophy">Champions Trophy</a> squad but the BCCI will take a call only after India's ongoing ODI series against England. Bumrah is expected to play the final ODI of the series on February 12 for the board to assess his fitness.

"They should be worried about Bumrah's fitness. When you play in the Champions Trophy, the most beautiful thing about it is you can't take any team lightly. The top eight best teams are playing. If any team has a bowler like Bumrah, it is a plus point. But it is not like we will plan everything around him," Javed told reporters on the sidelines of Pakistan's training session in Lahore on Wednesday (Feb 5).
<h2>Rana's ODI debut ends hopes for Bumrah's return?</h2>
India gave <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/harshit-rana">Harshit Rana</a> his ODI debut in the first one-dayer against England on Thursday (Feb 6). The pacer impressed and took three wickets in the seven overs he bowled. Rana, however, also went for 26 runs in an over - the most for an Indian on debut.
Former India cricketer Aakash Chopra thinks that Rana's debut marks the end of Bumrah's comeback hopes for the ICC tournament set to begin on February 19.
"Harshit Rana's debut tells me there are minimal chances of Jasprit Bumrah being available for the Champions Trophy," Chopra said on his YouTube channel. "If Bumrah is not there and you have to take Harshit as he is ahead of [Mohammed] Siraj at the moment, playing him without a debut would make your heart beat fast."
India next play England ODI on Sunday (Feb 9) in Cuttack.

Usually, there's three weeks of exclusivity period before the start of an ICC tournament when the global body takes control. This time, the ICC has allowed it for testing of venues.
"Hosts may seek approval from <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/icc" rel="dofollow noopener" target="_blank">ICC</a> for activities to take place in venues within the exclusivity window .. <h2>What is an exclusivity period?</h2>
An exclusivity period can be defined as the date from which ICC takes control of the tournament venue to ensure and carry out the last-minute checks. It generally ranges from one to three weeks ahead of the start of the tournament, and during this period, the host nation is not allowed to host any matches to preserve the ground conditions for the tournament.
The upcoming Champions Trophy 2025 will be played across three venues in Pakistan: Karachi, Lahore, and Rawalpindi, as well as Dubai, UAE, for India's matches.
As per the current exclusivity period, the ICC was supposed to get control of Pak venues on February 12, but now the same has been postponed until the tri-series final, which is scheduled for February 14.
Similarly, the Dubai Stadium was supposed to come under the ICC's purview on February 10 due to the ongoing IL T20 tournament, which gets over on February 9.&nbsp;

Similarly, the Dubai Stadium was supposed to come under the ICC's purview on February 10 due to the ongoing IL T20 tournament, which gets over on February 9.

2025 Champions Trophy: ICC makes HUGE exception for Pakistan ahead of tournament

Just days after Pakistan squad for the upcoming ICC Champions Trophy 2025 was announced, former Pakistan captain Rashid Latif has criticised the squad, calling it a &lsquo;political selection.&rsquo; He blamed the national selection committee for making unexpected choices, raising eyebrows over some inclusions.
The squad, revealed on Friday, saw all-rounder Faheem Ashraf make a surprising comeback after two years on the sidelines. His sudden inclusion has sparked debate, with an old picture of him meeting former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif resurfacing, fuelling speculation about his selection route.
&ldquo;It looks like a politically motivated selection,&rdquo; Latif alleged while speaking to Telecomasia.net. &ldquo;Faheem has neither recent performances nor an impressive record to justify his return.&rdquo;
Once a top contender for Pakistan&rsquo;s white-ball team, Ashraf&rsquo;s form had declined. His ODI stats reflect this: in 34 ODIs, he has taken only 26 wickets at an average of 46.30, while his batting record stands at a mere 10.66 across 24 innings, with a highest score of 28.
As per reports, Aamer Jamal was initially the preferred choice but was dropped at the last minute to accommodate Ashraf. Other surprises include the return of all-rounder Khushdil Shah and wicketkeeper-batter Usman Khan, who is yet to make his ODI debut.
&ldquo;The squad includes players like Ashraf, Fakhar, and Saud Shakeel, who were not in the system during the last three tours. Now, it&rsquo;s up to captain Mohammad Rizwan to pick the best playing XI, just as Imran Khan did in 1992 and Younis Khan in 2009,&rdquo; he remarked.

However, he raised concerns about Pakistan&rsquo;s bowling strategy in the crucial middle overs.&nbsp;&ldquo;I think Babar will do well as an opener, but the bigger issue is who will take wickets between overs 11-20 and 31-40. That was our Achilles&rsquo; heel in the 2023 World Cup,&rdquo; he added.
<h2>Squad selection is a joke: Tanveer</h2>
Meanwhile, former Pakistan pacer Tanveer Ahmed minced no words in his criticism, labelling the squad selection as a 'joke'.
&ldquo;We have picked a squad that doesn&rsquo;t suit our own conditions,&rdquo; Tanveer told Telecomasia.net. &ldquo;Look at India&mdash;they have four quality spinners in Ravindra Jadeja, Washington Sundar, Kuldeep Yadav, and Axar Patel. And what do we have? Just one&mdash;Abrar Ahmed!&rdquo;
He accused the selectors of favouritism, claiming, &ldquo;This is a recommendation-based selection, and the selection committee will be responsible for its consequences. There was no need to tamper with the squad that performed so well on the last three tours.&rdquo;

Ahead of the upcoming Champions Trophy 2025, Hina Munawar, a police officer with a strong background in security and operations, has been named as the first female team manager for the Pakistan men's cricket team.&nbsp;
Munawar, who has served in the Frontier Constabulary in the high-risk Swat area, has been appointed as the Operations Manager for Pakistan's Tri-Nation series and the Champions Trophy which begins on February 19 in Karachi. While senior retired bureaucrat Naveed Akram Cheema will continue as team manager, Munawar's appointment has sparked curiosity among cricket fans, experts, and media.
After passing the Civil Superior Services exam, Munawar transitioned into various law enforcement and security roles.
"Perhaps her appointment is aimed at streamlining operations within the team and between players and the board, as she has worked in strategic and leadership roles, helping to streamline various operations," said a source close to the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB).

It is understood that PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi brought Munawar into the board on deputation, as she remains part of the Police Service of Pakistan.
The PCB aims to streamline team management and create a more organised and efficient environment, with her appointment bringing fresh perspectives to the traditionally coaching-focused and male-dominated setup.
Meanwhile, PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi has assured that Lahore&rsquo;s Gaddafi Stadium will be ready for the February 7 inauguration, just in time for the 2025 Champions Trophy.
Naqvi dismissed doubts raised about the tournament&rsquo;s venue. &ldquo;They were people from across the border and even others who kept on saying it looks like the Champions Trophy would be moved out of Pakistan as stadiums are not going to be ready on time. But I can announce today we are set to go for the tri-series and Champions Trophy,&rdquo; he told reporters at the renovated Gaddafi Stadium, as quoted by PTI.

2025 Champions Trophy: 'We will be...': PCB reiterates as uncertainty looms

Former <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/pakistan-cricket-board">Pakistan Cricket Board</a> (PCB) chairman <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/ramiz-raja">Ramiz Raja</a> launched a scathing attack after Pakistan, for the first time in 34 years, lost a Test against the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/west-indies-cricket">West Indies</a> on home turf.
After ending Bazball's dominance with a 2-1 series win against England last year, Men in Green thought they had cracked the formula for victory at home - producing a turning strip.
The trend of competing on spin paradise continued during the two-match Test series against the West Indies. In the opening Test, the Caribbean side withered on Multan's surface, where the ball spun right from the opening hour. But after losing the series opener, the West Indies upped the ante in the second Test, especially on the batting front, and bounced back with a 120-run victory, their first in 34 years in Pakistan.
According to Ramiz, the frustrating thing about the Pakistan team is dropping the tempo against weak opposition, a mistake that the former cricketer doesn't expect from the Asian side.
<h2>'Hard to justify this defeat'</h2>
"It is hard to justify this defeat. When you prepare such a brutal spin track, it becomes a lottery. So winning the toss becomes an important thing, and every inning becomes important.The frustrating thing about Pakistan Cricket is that against the top teams, we play in top gear, but against weak teams, we drop our standard. Novice mistakes. You don't expect such mistakes from Pakistan cricket, especially from batters," Ramiz said on his YouTube channel.
In the opening Test, the beleaguered West Indies side tried to resist Pakistan's spin prowess but eventually succumbed to a 127-run defeat. Even after suffering a bitter loss, the expression on the faces of the West Indies players suggested that they had figured out their next plan of action.

But in the second game, signs pointing towards Pakistan's defeat were all over the place when the visiting party won the toss and decided to bat. A fiery stand from the tail-end lifted the West Indies from 38/7 to 163.
With a slender 9-run lead, the West Indies captain, Kraigg Brathwaite, blazed his way to a valuable 52 (73) to propel his side to a competitive total of 244.
Sajid Khan, who has been at the forefront of Pakistan's recent home success, wavered in his line and lengths and leaked runs throughout his spell. Even the batters couldn't use their feet to negate the spin threat.
Ramiz was quick to note the flaws in Pakistan's underwhelming performance in Multan and added, "Things can't be taken for granted. Spinners gave away runs, and the batting lineup was disappointing. You have to think whether the batters can survive or not. Nobody was expecting that the West Indies would end the second Test on Day 3 and leave with a series draw."

Spinners gave away runs, and the batting lineup was disappointing. You have to think whether the batters can survive or not. Nobody was expecting that the West Indies would end the second Test on Day 3 and leave with a series draw." (With inputs from agencies)

The Champions Trophy 2025 has been mired in controversy ever since the venue renovation was announced and the budget was passed by the ICC.

Champions Trophy 2025: PCB to inaugurate Lahore stadium on January 25

New Delhi, India
A final decision on the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy was made on Monday after weeks of deliberation. Pakistan will host the tournament in February and March next year, but India's matches will be played at a neutral venue. An agreement has been made not just for the 2025 Champions Trophy, but for the entire 2024-27 ICC cycle. India-Pakistan matches hosted by either country at ICC Events during the period will be played at a neutral venue. The decision marks a major development in cricketing ties between both countries, which have been affected due to the strained political relations over the last two decades.
<h2>What led to the breakdown?</h2>
India and Pakistan's cricketing ties have always been complex. There was no cricket played between the two countries between 1962 and 1977 due to two major wars in 1965 and 1971. Subsequently, there was regular cricket between the two nations till 1999, when there was another suspension due to the Kargil war.
However, a peace process was initiated by Indian Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee and Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf in 2004 which led to India touring Pakistan for the first time in 14 years. That launched arguably the most successful period of cricket diplomacy between India and Pakistan. Pakistan also toured India in 2007, but things took a turn for the worse the very next year.
The Indian cricket team has not travelled to Pakistan since the 2008 Asia Cup, which took place a few months before the 26/11 Mumbai attack. Pakistani terrorists from Lashkar-e-Taiba killed at least 166 people after which both cricketing and political ties have been tense.
The 2009 terrorist attack on the Sri Lankan cricket team in Lahore further put a question mark on Pakistan's ability to provide security to traveling teams. The incident led to a decade-long suspension of Test matches in the country and cost Pakistan its co-hosting rights for the 2011 Cricket World Cup- which was hosted and won by India.
There was a brief attempt at revival with a bilateral series held in India in 2012/13, but subsequent attempts have been blocked. For any series to take place between India and Pakistan, the BCCI now requires clearance from the Indian Government. Test cricket has returned to Pakistan in 2019 with the series against Sri Lanka. Heavyweights Australia, England and New Zealand have all toured Pakistan since, but a bilateral series with India remains off the table.
<h2>Which cricket board has been more affected by the hiatus?</h2>
The fortunes of the two cricket boards over the last 15 years have been contrasting, to say the least. The BCCI has grown from strength to strength and established itself as undoubtedly the most powerful and richest cricket board in the world.
The BCCI has not been hurt by the absence of regular matches against their old rivals. The biggest success story for the Indian cricket board in the last decade has been the inception of the IPL, which is the second most valuable franchise league in the world. The IPL is the biggest money-spinner for the BCCI and it has exponentially grown the financial might of Indian cricket.

<h2>What does the future hold?</h2>
The adoption of the hybrid model for the 2024-27 cycle will come as a major relief for all cricket fans. However, the fact that all India-Pakistan matches in the next few years will take place on neutral ground will take away some of the energy from the high-octane clashes. Some reports have suggested a triangular series could be possible involving India and Pakistan.
Such an arrangement would have to be approved by the ICC. However, the BCCI's reluctance, a packed cricket calendar and logistical challenges make it unlikely in the 2024-27 cycle. Purist cricket fans will be disappointed as the decision doesn't raise hope of a test match happening between the two nations. The last red ball India-Pakistan match was held in Bengaluru in 2007.
While India has not crossed the border in 16 years, Pakistan did so twice- for the 2016 T20 World Cup and the 2023 ODI World Cup. The latest decision marks a significant shift in the PCB's earlier stance and the board claims the move is an 'equitable arrangement' for the future. The decision certainly gives clarity for the next few years, but it won't put an end to the politicisation of cricket between the two countries.

New Delhi, India A final decision on the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy was made on Monday after weeks of deliberation. What led to the breakdown? Which cricket board has been more affected by the hiatus? The fortunes of the two cricket boards over the last 15 years have been contrasting, to say the least. The BCCI has grown from strength to strength and established itself as undoubtedly the most powerful and richest cricket board in the world. The BCCI has not been hurt by the absence of regular matches against their old rivals. The biggest success story for the Indian cricket board in the last decade has been the inception of the IPL, which is the second most valuable franchise league in the world.
