Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chief Mohsin Naqvi has stated that there's been no official communication from Board for Control for Cricket India (BCCI) regarding India not coming to play the ICC Champions Trophy in Pakistan. Naqvi also said that PCB is not prepared to accept the hybrid model for the tournament. The statement comes after a report in the Indian media stated that India are going to travel to Pakistan and instead are seeking Dubai, UAE as the option to play their matches.

"In the last two months, the Indian media has been reporting that India isn't travelling," Naqvi said while talking to reporters outside Lahore's Gaddafi Stadium on Friday (Nov 8).

"I discussed this with them and my team, and our stance is clear: they need to give us in writing any objections they may have. Until now, no discussion of the hybrid model has happened, nor are we prepared to accept one. The Indian media are reporting it, but no formal communication has reached the PCB," he added.

The PCB chief also warned India of consequences in future if India do not travel to Pakistan for the ICC tournament.

"If we get a letter from India, I'll have to go to my government and have to abide by their decisions. Pakistan has shown great gestures to India in the past, and we'd like to say clearly India shouldn't expect such friendly gestures from us every time [if they refuse to come]. The government will decide if Pakistan travel for any future event in India if they don't come to Pakistan for the Champions Trophy. The PCB will not decide that," Naqvi further stated.

Both the countries do not play bilateral cricket due to the political tensions. Last year, India had refused to travel to Pakistan for the regional Asia Cup as well but Pakistan travelled to India for the ODI World Cup which followed soon after.

The Champions Trophy is expected to be played in Feb-March next year.

'If they don't come...,' PCB chief on reports of India not coming to Pakistan for ICC Champions Trophy 2025

Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has submitted its first draft of the proposed schedule for the 2025 Champions Trophy to the International Cricket Council (ICC) on Thursday (Nov 7). Pakistan, set to host the Champions Trophy has proposed several venues including Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore. The stadium has also been proposed to host India’s group-stage matches and the final of the Champions Trophy. The Champions Trophy is set to take place from Feb 19 to Mar 9 with India’s participation yet to be confirmed.

PCB proposes Lahore for India’s matches

According to WION’s Anas Mallick, PCB on Thursday submitted the draft schedule that includes staging all of India’s matches in Lahore. Situated in the Punjab province, Lahore is geographically the closest city to India with an international cricket stadium, providing flexibility to the Indian team to travel back to their homeland within a few minutes, in case Rohit Sharma’s men disagree on staying in Pakistan.

Lahore has also been proposed to host the final of the Champions Trophy further helping the Indian team to stay in proximity to their homeland in case they reach the final.

The Indian cricket team has not travelled to Pakistan since the 2008 Asia Cup as diplomatic relations between the nations hit low after the 26/11 terrorist attacks in Mumbai.

The PCB is determined to host the entire Champions Trophy in Pakistan thereby avoiding a hybrid model which was in use when Pakistan was the host of the 2023 Asia Cup. The model allowed India to play its matches in Sri Lanka while other nations played in Pakistan.

Other proposals on the table

The proposal further adds the curtain-raiser clash will be hosted in Karachi between hosts Pakistan and Australia. India will kick start their campaign against Bangladesh in Lahore on 20th February while playing New Zealand on 23rd February. The high-voltage clash between India and Pakistan will take place on March 1 in Lahore.

Considering India’s chances of reaching the final, the showpiece contest could take place on March 9 at the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore. India’s clash against New Zealand could be moved to Rawalpindi if broadcasters request, added a PCB source while speaking to WION.

Champions Trophy: PCB submits proposed schedule to ICC; Lahore to stage India's group matches including final

In the latest development surrounding Team India’s chances of participating in the Champions Trophy 2025, the BCCI has conveyed to the PCB that India will not travel to Pakistan for the eight-team tournament, citing security reasons. Instead, the BCCI has pushed for India games to be held at a neutral venue, with Dubai emerging as the best option.

"Yes, the BCCI has conveyed their concerns regarding Champions Trophy matches in Pakistan. They want to play matches at a neutral venue, and Dubai is the strong candidate to host the fixtures involving the Men in Blue," a source close to the information confirmed, as quoted by Times of India (TOI).

Following BCCI’s latest statement of not sending Team India to Pakistan, the host board – Pakistan Cricket Board and the apex body – the ICC, who confirmed sharing the proposed draft schedule with each participating board earlier, will now be bound to make changes to the final schedule, likely bringing in the hybrid model for this tournament starting February 19.

Even last year, BCCI did not send the Indian Team to Pakistan for Asia Cup 2024, with Sri Lanka roped in as the last-minute co-host.

Meanwhile, per the original plan, the ICC and PCB were supposed to release the final schedule on Monday (Nov 11); however, with the BCCI deciding against sending their team across the border, it remains to be seen when the modified schedule is released.

Dubai suits BCCI

Dubai has hosted several cricketing tournaments for a long time, including the Men’s and Women’s T20 World Cups, respectively. With Dubai ticking all the boxes for the BCCI and the Indian government, including security concerns, logistics and whatnot, the Indian Cricket Board is tilted towards bringing it in as the tournament's co-host.

“There are no issues in Dubai. Hotels are not a problem, logistics not a problem, everything can be handled smoothly. And ICC does have things in control when it comes to Dubai,” the source added.

Meanwhile, per the draft schedule, Pakistan handpicked three cities to host the Champions Trophy 2025 – Karachi, Lahore and Rawalpindi, with several reports suggesting that India was placed in Group A alongside Pakistan, New Zealand and Bangladesh.

As reported by WION earlier, the proposed schedule included India’s matches against Bangladesh in Lahore on February 20, New Zealand on the 23rd and the marquee clash against the hosts Pakistan on March 1 at the Gaddafi Stadium.

Besides, in the current scenario, if Dubai is added to the Champions Trophy itinerary, it will stage Team India’s knockout matches should they qualify.

India to not travel to Pakistan for Champions Trophy 2025; BCCI pushes for neutral venue - Report

Gary Kirsten stepped down as the white-ball coach of Pakistan on Monday (Oct 28). Just six months into his job, the former South African opener shocked one and all by resigning from his post. Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chief Mohsin Naqvi has now made some shocking claims that Kirsten breached his contract. Naqvi also revealed that Pakistan will have a new white-ball coach before their upcoming tour of Zimbabwe.

Naqvi told the media in a recent interaction, "He (Kirsten) broke his contract with the PCB and made some breaches. He ended the contract with us. We will have a new white ball head coach by the end of this month because Jason Gillespie has only agreed to manage the team in Australia for the white ball matches on an interim basis. He is more focused on his role as red ball head coach. The team will have a new white ball coach for the Zimbabwe tour."

The PCB, however, didn't give details behind Kirsten's sudden resignation. However, according to a PTI report, it is believed that it all happened because Kirsten wasn't involved when the PCB announced the squads for the upcoming tour of Zimbabwe and Australia and the new limited-overs captain (a role taken over by Mohammad Rizwan).

Further, the sources claimed that Kirsten had breached some clauses of his contract by not spending enough time in Pakistan and also insisted on having a full foreign coaching support staff. Thus, this wasn't well received by the PCB.

Gary Kirsten breached his contract, says PCB chief, reveals new white-ball coach will be named before Zim tour

Gary Kirsten's departure as Pakistan's white-ball coach just six months into the job has caused a turmoil in country's cricket. Former Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman Ramiz Raja says that Kirsten quitting will make it hard for the country to attract international talent in future.

"When you search for international coaches, with the kind of backlash that you will probably get from Gary Kirsten's resignation...it's not going to be an easy, straightforward job for Pakistan to hire international talent," Raja told reporters in a media interaction ahead of Pakistan's upcoming of the Australia tour as reported by cricket news website ESPNCricinfo.

"What you need to do is to make sure that once you involve and engage somebody, you've got to give them clarity regarding the role."

"I don't know whether that clarity was given to Gary Kirsten or how he wanted to get Pakistan into this one-day phase, what he wanted to achieve. I'm not privy to that."

"It's not great news [Kirsten's departure] because Pakistan needed an experienced hand. From a distance, it doesn't look great just before a tour," he added.

The rift seems to have started when Pakistan named third selection committee in three months which also included former ICC Elite Panel umpire Aleem Dar from the country.

The coaches were stripped of their say in team selection and that did not sit well with Kirsten, who had coached India to 2011 ODI World Cup glory at home.

Kirsten stepped down without coaching Pakistan in a single ODI and right before the much-important tour of Australia. Test coach Jason Gillespie has been asked to fill in for Kirsten.

It is to be noted that Gillespie has also not liked the idea of not having any say in the team selection but has decided to keep the job so far.

'He wanted to get...,' Former PCB chairman Ramiz Raja on Gary Kirsten quitting as white-ball coach

Former Pakistan cricketer Basil Ali has launched a scathing attack on the country's board after newly-appointed white-ball coach Gary Kirsten resigned six months into the job. Kirsten stepped down following the announcement of Mohammad Rizwan being appointed as Pakistan's new white-ball skipper.

"Mohsin Naqvi has come with a lot of power. The coaches, selectors and managers are being removed. Earlier, the chairman used to be changed from time to time. Now, whoever raises their voice will be sidelined," said Basit Ali on his YouTube channel about the new chairman.

Gary Kirsten has stepped down as Pakistan’s white-ball head coach with immediate effect. The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) appointed Kirsten in April 2024 on a two-year deal, and six months into the job, the Protean decided to part ways just a week ahead of the Australia ODIs and T20Is. The board announced bowling coach Jason Gillespie as his replacement on an interim basis.

Following PCB’s decision to snatch away the selection powers from Kirsten and bowling coach Jason Gillespie, allotting it to the newly-formed selection committee, the rift began between all parties concerned. Though Kirsten remained quiet about this development, Gillespie tried concealing it in the lead-up to the third Test between Pakistan and England in Rawalpindi, saying his role is now reduced to a ‘match-day analyst’ and that ‘he didn’t sign up for this.’

The reports also suggested that the delay in the squad announcements for the Australia and Zimbabwe series was due to the animated discussions within the board, where Kirsten was keen to have his inputs taken into consideration.

Meanwhile, shortly after Pakistan lost the first Test in Multan, an emergency meeting was called, where a new selection committee was formed, which included former cricketers and an ICC panel coach, Aleem Dar. Gary Kirsten steps down as Pakistan’s white-ball coach a week ahead of Australia ODIs, T20Is

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has named Mohammad Rizwan as the new white-ball captain. This comes after Babar Azam stood down from the white-ball captaincy recently.

The development was announced a day after Pakistan beat England 2-1 in the home Test series - their first series victory under new skipper Shan Masood who had replaced Babar after the ODI World Cup 2023.

The PCB also announced their contract with only Babar and Rizwan being the players in the top category. The 32-year-old's first assignment as captain is going to be the ODI and T20I series in Australia and Zimbabwe.

"I am committed to giving my absolute best in this role and look forward to working closely with the selectors, coaches and my immensely talented teammates," Rizwan said in a statement via the PCB.

"Together, we aim to meet and exceed the expectations of our fans and supporters," the statement further read.

The PCB also announced the return of Naseem Shah, Shaheen Shah Afridi and Azam for the Australia tour after the trio was 'rested' from the last two England Tests.

Salman Ali Agha, who is part of all four squads, has been named the vice captain. Agha will also lead the T20I side against Zimbabwe with Rizwan sitting the series out.

In other notable contract news, the PCB has kept Test skipper Shan Masood in grade B of the central contract list with a condition. Masood will remain in the grade till the time he's the captain.

There's been a lot of scrutiny on Masood and had it not been the series win against England, he would sure have been out as the skipper.

Pakistan's Australia tour starts November 4 while the Zimbabwe tour is from December 24-December 5.

Pakistan Cricket has been in the news for all good, bad and ugly reasons. Although their recent shallow on-field performances are enough to hog the limelight, their off-field tactics are also starting to make some noise. Head coach Jason Gillespie’s role has now been confined to ‘match-day strategy’, with the PCB snatching away his decision-making perk and reallocating it to the newly-formed selection committee.

On the eve of the third and final home Test against England in Rawalpindi, Gillespie revealed he had no role in the team selection for the second game in Multan, which Pakistan won and levelled the series.

Though the head coach and captain are part of the leadership group whose primary role is to make all the decisions, from the team selection to tactical changes on the field, Gillespie and Shan Masood were not part of the emergency meeting (with the new selection committee) after the first-Test disaster in Multan.

"The PCB came out and made some changes after that Test match. It was decided that a new selection panel would come in, and they would be making decisions. I was not involved in the decision-making; I was just there. I'm now just the coach on match-day strategy. I just keep out of things now and just focus on the players and getting them ready for cricket,” Gillespie said ahead of the third Test in Rawalpindi.

Despite his situation, Gillespie aims to work with the Test squad at the helm, trying to hone their skills and go for a Test series win against England.

Understanding the team’s position from what they have been through, the former Aussie quick admits any win is great.

"The last few years, Pakistan's Test cricket hasn't been where we'd like it to be. Any win is great, and any series win is fantastic. Just coming into this environment, as a coach, I'm very protective of players. They're the ones going out and representing their country. I suppose there's a dad in me that comes out, and I want to protect all the boys from all outside noise and whatever,” he continued.

England won the toss and elected to bat first in Rawalpindi – the venue where they scored more than 500 runs on a single day the last time. This time they have including three spinners in their playing XI.

On the other hand, Pakistan remained unchanged for the third Test of the series.

India's Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has dismissed any reports of India-Pakistan cricket talks resuming following foreign minister S Jaishankar’s recent visit to Islamabad with the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 looming.

“Whether any conversation regarding cricket happened or not, I would say nothing of that sort happened. And the reports that you saw were not accurate,” MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said.

Given the Indian government will have the final say in deciding the team’s status of travelling to Pakistan, the BCCI and PCB cannot confirm anything yet.

The PCB has reportedly written to the BCCI, offering assistance should the Men in Blue decide against staying in Pakistan, citing security reasons, and return to India after their scheduled matches – with Chandigarh and New Delhi as options. An unnamed PCB official has confirmed this development, citing nearly a week-long gap between India’s final two games.

Meanwhile, per the proposed schedule shared with all stakeholders, including the eight participating teams, Lahore, Rawalpindi and Karachi are zeroed in as the final venues, with the PCB scheduling all of India's games in Lahore. The city is close to the Indian border, making it easier for the fans to travel across for India’s matches against Bangladesh (February 20), Pakistan (February 23) and March 2 (New Zealand).

Changes to the schedule

As first put out by Cricbuzz, a few developments have emerged regarding the schedule, with local reports claiming that the broadcaster has requested the ICC to relocate one India game, especially the India-New Zealand match. The PCB provided Rawalpindi as an alternative.

However, the ICC officials and the broadcaster have denied any knowledge of such a request.

Besides, the ICC and PCB have chalked out a contingency plan of staging India’s matches outside of Pakistan should the BCCI deny permission to travel.

On the other hand, the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) bosses are confident of India, Pakistan and the ICC coming to the same page over this issue.

"There are lots of different alternatives and contingencies available if that doesn't happen. I wouldn't have thought (it would be played without India), because if you play the Champions Trophy without India the broadcast rights aren't there, and we need to protect them," Reuters quoted ECB Chair Richard Thomson as saying.

Has Jaishankar's recent visit revived talks of India travelling to Pakistan for Champions Trophy? MEA responds

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has reportedly trimmed the men’s selection committee as the skippers and head coaches of the side will no longer serve in that capacity. According to a report on Thursday (Oct 17), PCB has trimmed the committee to five members and plans to not extend it beyond. This comes after former umpire Aleem Dar was added to the committee along with four other members.

No more captains, coaches in selection committee

According to a report from Cricbuzz, the committee will no longer comprise the above-mentioned capacities, with the new panel already in praise for team selection during the ongoing Test match against England. The development comes less than a week after PCB decided to overhaul the selection committee. As things stand, Aleem Dar, Aaqib Javed, and Azhar Ali are part of the selection process, with veterans like Asad Shafiq, Hasan Cheema, and various other PCB officials also joining them.

The move also comes at a point when Pakistan no longer has a white-ball captain after Babar Azam decided to resign from his post for the second time in less than 12 months. Azam was also dropped from the Pakistan team from the Playing XI against England in the Test in Multan with a recommendation from the panel. This trimming also included Shaheen Shah Afridi and Naseem Shah, despite them being integral members of the white-ball set-up.

Pakistan have England on the mat in Multan

England need 261 runs more to win the second Test match in Multan with eight wickets in hand and result is possible on Friday with the Bazball approach of the visitors. Ben Stokes’ side leads the series 1-0 having beaten Pakistan at the same venue last week while records tumbled left, right and centre. If Pakistan manage to get the better of England in the second Test they will draw the series at 1-1 with one more match to go.

PCB drops captains, head coaches from selection committee in latest overhaul: Report

England Cricket Board (ECB) chief executive Richard Gould and chairman Richard Thompson say that the upcoming ICC Champions Trophy without India will not be in cricket's interest. The statement comes as India are yet to answer on their participation in the ICC event which is scheduled to take place in Pakistan in February-March next year.

"It would not be in cricket's interests for India not to be playing in the Champions Trophy," Thompson said as reported by cricket news website ESPNCricinfo.

"It's interesting, with Jay Shah - the former secretary of the BCCI and now chair of the ICC - [who] is going to have a big role to play in that. There's geopolitics, and then there's cricketing geopolitics. I think they'll find a way. They have to find a way," he added.

India and Pakistan do not play bilateral cricket due to political tensions between the governments of two countries. Last year, India refused to send its team to Pakistan for Asia Cup and the tournament was eventually scheduled in the hybrid model with Sri Lanka hosting all of India's matches including the final.

Pakistan, however, did travel to India for the 2023 ODI World Cup later in the year and is expecting India to travel for the Champions Trophy next year.

"If you play the Champions Trophy without India, or Pakistan, the broadcast rights aren't there, and we need to protect them," Gould said.

"They [Pakistan] are the host nation. We've seen the developments going on, and we're all waiting to understand whether India are going to travel. That's the key. We think there are some discussions and relationships where they need to be. I know Pakistan are expecting India to travel. India veteran bowler Ravi Ashwin has ended the Virat Kohli vs Babar Azam debate once and for all. Ashwin said that while Babar is a class player, he isn't anywhere close to Virat, and the two names should not be taken in one sentence.

"Definitely, if he is given a chance, he will score runs. If there is class, I believe we should end this debate once and for all. First of all, across the border, Babar Azam and Virat Kohli shouldn't be mentioned in the same statement," Ashwin said while talking on his YouTube channel.

As far as I know, at this point, if any one comes close, it is Joe Root in Test cricket,” he added.

Babar's name is doing rounds in social media for the lack of form he has been going through for quite some time now. He was also 'rested' from Pakistan's squad for the remaining two Tests against England in the ongoing series.

Babar last played a significant innings in December 2022, scoring 161 against New Zealand in Karachi. Since then, the former skipper has gone half century-less in 18 Test innings with a highest score of 41 against Australia in Melbourne earlier this year.

Pakistan cricketer Fakhar Zaman has been issued a show cause notice by the country's cricket board for questioning the decision to drop premier batter Babar Azam from the remaining two Tests against England.

"It is concerning to hear suggestions about dropping Babar Azam," Zaman had posted on social media platform X.

"India didn't bench Virat Kohli during his rough stretch between 2020 and 2023, when he averaged 19.33, 28.21, and 26.50, respectively. If we are considering sidelining our premier batsman, arguably the best Pakistan has ever produced, it could send a deeply negative message across the team. There is still time to avoid pressing the panic button; we should focus on safeguarding our key players rather than undermining them," he added.

Pakistan decided to rest Babar, Shaheen Shah Afridi, Naseem Shah and Sarfaraz Ahmed from the remaining two Tests against England after an innings and 47 runs loss in the first Test.

Pakistan squad for 2nd and 3rd Tests: Shan Masood (c), Saud Shakeel (vc), Aamer Jamal, Abdullah Shafique, Haseebullah (wk), Kamran Ghulam, Mehran Mumtaz, Mir Hamza, Mohammad Ali, Mohammad Huraira, Mohammad Rizwan (wk), Noman Ali, Saim Ayub, Sajid Khan, Salman Ali Agha and Zahid Mehmood.

Former International Cricket Council (ICC) umpire Aleem Dar is the latest inductee into the Pakistan Cricket Board’s (PCB) men’s selection committee after it was confirmed on Friday (Oct 11). Dar, who has officiated in high-profile matches in major ICC tournaments will now serve as a member of the selection committee alongside prominent names like Aqib Javed, Azhar Ali and Hasan Cheema. However, netizens did not sit back and took a dig at the PCB as Pakistan cricket is already enduring a tough period on the field.

What is the matter?

In a rare incident, the PCB has opted to appoint the former umpire to be part of the player’s selection committee which has raised eyebrows. Generally, the selection committee consists of former players and coaches with playing backgrounds. However, Dar lacks experience in the playing side having only been part of the big occasions as an umpire.

While his credentials as an umpire are unmatched, it will be interesting to see what changes Dar and Co bring to the fortunes of the Pakistan Cricket team.

Pakistan cricket is currently on its low with the latest loss against England in Multan being another downfall. Despite scoring 556 runs in their first innings, Pakistan lost the match by an inning in what was another low for the side.

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has refuted the reports claiming a change in the venue of the upcoming ICC Champions Trophy 2025 final in case India qualifies for the title match. 'Don't see them...,' PCB chief Mohsin Naqvi on India traveling to Pakistan for Champions Trophy 2025

Pakistan cricket is in a tottering state with the men's team having a terrible run, across formats, since the 2023 ODI World Cup. At present, the pressure is on the women's team to shine in the ongoing 2024 T20 World Cup, in UAE. Amid all this, there are reports flowing in that the Babar Azam-starrer men's team have not received salaries for the last three months. Moreover, the situation is the same for the women's side who are playing the T20 WC without being paid since June.

According to a report by PTI, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) are yet to clear the salaries of the last three months for the men's team. "For the last three months the players are waiting for their payments and also an announcement of the central contracts list,” said the source, highlighting the growing frustration among players.

Notably, the previous central contract agreement between the PCB and players, many aspects such as significant benefits, including salary increases were negotiated. Players in Category A, featuring the likes of Babar, Mohammad Rizwan and Shaheen Afridi, earn monthly retainers of 4.5 million rupees after tax deductions. In addition, they receive a share from logo sponsorships as well as three percent of the revenues the PCB generates from the International Cricket Council (ICC).

This year, players' share of ICC revenue comes to approximately 1.53 million rupees each. However, payment delays have led to huge concerns. In addition, the report cites that the PCB has attributed the delay to administrative issues and pending revenue from various sources.

"The PCB is spending a lot on the complete facelift of the three stadiums in Karachi, Lahore, and Rawalpindi for the ICC Champions Trophy, besides other cricket-related expenses. But the dues of players would be cleared this month," the source further said.

Future central contract increments, slated for 2024-25 and 2025-26, does promise a substantial rise in players' earnings. In Category A, retainers are expected to see a rise to 2,070,000 rupees a month, with corresponding hikes for players in Categories B, C, and D. However, all this seems out of the picture due to the current administrative delays.

Following losing to England in the T20I series before the T20 World Cup in the Americas, where they lost to the co-host USA and arch-rivals India in two straight games, leading to them getting knocked out of the tournament in the first round, the pressure started building on Babar. What made matters worse was Babar’s below-par performance throughout.

With the PCB lagging in throwing weight behind their top-ranked batter and Babar differing from the observations mentioned in the report submitted by the coaching group, he decided against continuing in his job despite the ICC Champions Trophy date nearing.

Per the latest reports, the PCB is not rushing into naming Babar Azam’s replacement as the new ODI and T20I captain. The selection committee is said to have informally informed Kirsten about them taking time before naming a new white-ball skipper.

“Chairman Mohsin Naqvi has made it clear he wants minutes of all official discussions by the selection committee that includes both foreign head coaches to be recorded so that a clear reason is on record for making the appointment," the source added.

Did differences with coach Gary Kirsten lead to Babar Azam quitting captaincy? PCB source reveals details

After Babar Azam stepped down as the Pakistan white-ball captain, on Wednesday (Oct 2), Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is expected to name three separate captains, according to sources. The PCB was set to hand over Babar the ODI captaincy as well, ahead of the upcoming white-ball games, however, the right-hander resigned via a post on X, formerly Twitter. Thus, it has added to the PCB's headache as they need a captain, or two, for ODIs and T20Is and also a strong deputy for the skipper to be able to take breaks and manage his workload.

Insiders suggest that appointing the next captain won't be a cakewalk for white-ball coach Gary Kirsten or the selection committee. "Mohammad Rizwan is the obvious choice for the white-ball captaincy given that, along with Babar, he is the only player who is an automatic selection in all formats of the game," claimed an insider.

Notably, Babar, Rizwan and Shaheen Afridi are the only three all-format players for Pakistan. Thus, managing workload is going to be a stern task for Pakistan, who are set to play a plethora of games in the upcoming months.

HECTIC SCHEDULE

Talking about Pakistan's schedule, they are hosting England in three Tests starting on Oct 7. Following that, they are set to play 18 ODIs and T20Is in Australia, Zimbabwe, and South Africa from Nov-Dec, followed by a two-Test series in South Africa.

After returning home in Jan 2025, Pakistan will host a two-Test series versus West Indies and an ODI tri-series featuring New Zealand and South Africa in the run-up to the ICC Champions Trophy, also to be held in Pakistan. Post that, the Asian giants will leave for New Zealand for a white-ball series before the next edition of the Pakistan Super League (PSL) kicks off.

Another source pointed out, "Babar was captain in all three formats for more than three years, but Kirsten and the selectors have reservations over whether Rizwan could handle the workload in the coming months while also leading the side in ODIs and T20Is."

It is possible that the PCB might have separate ODI and T20I captains or appoint a strong vice-captain to Rizwan, for him to take ample breaks and manage his workload.

For the white-ball vice-captaincy, Shadab Khan, Saim Ayub, Test captain Shan Masood, and Shaheen are the obvious choices. They can also be considered for the captaincy role if Rizwan declines the offer or is overlooked.

As per sources, Kirsten has informed the PCB that, following Babar's loss of confidence and form, he cannot think of any player who could handle captaincy pressures in two formats.

After Babar Azam stepped down as the Pakistan white-ball captain, on Wednesday (Oct 2), Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is expected to name three separate captains, according to sources.

After Babar Azam's resignation, Pakistan set to name 3 separate captains: Reports

It was yet another chaotic evening in Pakistan cricket on Tuesday (Oct 1), Babar Azam handed in his resignation to the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) from white-ball captaincy. This is the second time in less than 12 months that the veteran batter has handed in his resignation from the captaincy role, highlighting the lack of proper management in the nation’s apex cricket body. However, the PCB has adored his commitment to the side and accepted his resignation.

PCB adores Babar’s commitment

“Although the PCB had backed Babar Azam as the white-ball captain, his decision to step down reflects his desire to focus more on making a greater impact as a player. This decision is a testament to his professionalism and commitment to Pakistan cricket. He believes that dedicating himself fully to his batting will enable him to play a more decisive role in the team’s success in the shorter formats,” said PCB in a statement.

Babar has been in a poor run of form in recent times and was on the gunshot of plenty of criticism. Part of the criticism came in the recently concluded Test series against Bangladesh, where the hosts lost 0-2, an embarrassing defeat on home soil.

Babar, who was reinstated as the captain of the white-ball side in March, had earlier resigned from all forms after the conclusion of the ODI World Cup in India. Pakistan were eliminated in the league phase of the tournament. He was again at the centre of criticism after they were eliminated in the group stage of the T20 World Cup in the United States and the West Indies.

It is now speculated that Babar will be dropped from the T20 squad and will be available only for the ODI and Test squads to reduce the burden on his shoulders. He will have a point to prove in the upcoming Test series against England, which will serve as a litmus test for Babar, whose form has hit a rough patch.

PCB accepts Babar Azam's resignation as skipper; adores his professionalism, commitment to Pakistan cricket

Shan Masood has endured some tough questions since taking up Pakistan’s Test captaincy from star batter Babar Azam; however, never before has any journalist been interrupted for disrespecting him the way it happened in the latest instance during the pre-series presser in the country. With Pakistan set to host England for three Tests, Masood attended the first press conference, where the PCB’s media director had to cut short the session because of one journalist’s ‘awkward question’ to the Test captain.

In a video doing rounds on social media, journalist Javed Iqbal, asked Masood, “You have said you will avail the offer of captaincy until it is on the table. But isn’t there some drive from your conscience that you have lost, aren’t performing well, and should leave it?”

To which, the Test skipper looked at the PCB’s director of media and communications, Sami ul Hasan, who interrupted the conversation and defused the tension with some stern words. He discontinued the presser and openly called out the journalist, asking him to be respectful while questioning the Pakistan Test captain.

“Thank you for all your questions and support. One last request: Pakistan’s captain is sitting here, absolutely ask your questions, but please show your respect,” Hasan said.

“Particularly I’m referring to Javed, because not the appropriate way of asking the Pakistan captain the question that you asked,” he continued.

Pakistan ready for England series

It was a horrid show for the hosts when England last toured Pakistan in late 2022 and won all three Test matches. While most of the players from the touring team that were there the last time are still around, England aren’t in the best of forms heading into the series.

On the other hand, Pakistan has to avenge the last time’s defeat, with the onus falling on the star players, including the captain, Babar, keeper-batter Mohammad Rizwan, and the pace duo of Shaheen Shah Afridi and Naseem Shah.

The first Test match begins in Multan on October 7, with the second and the third starting on 15 and 24 in Multan and Rawalpindi, respectively.

Pakistan lost to the USA in T20 World Cup 2024 before failing to making it to the knock outs and recently lost 0-2 to Bangladesh in the home Test series. The whole drama started after exit from 2023 ODI World Cup where Pakistan lost to Afghanistan.

Ever since the 50-over World Cup, PCB has seen multiple chairmen and a couple of changes in captaincy as well as coaches. Babar Azam was stripped off the captaincy from all formats before being handed the T20I captaincy just one series after Shaheen Afridi lost 5-0 vs Australia.

Pakistan also saw new coaches joining - Gary Kirsten for limited overs and Jason Gillespie for Tests. Kirsten also pointed out lack of unity in Pakistan team a while back but was happy with the depth of talent in the country during the domestic Champions Cup. Kirsten's statement were juxtaposed to chairman Mohasin Naqvi who said Pakistan don't have a huge talent pool to draw from.

"I've been here the last 12 days or so watching the Champions Cup and have been really encouraged at the depth of quality of players in this tournament," Kirsten said as reported by the cricket news website ESPNCricinfo.

Gillespie, on the other hand, was happy with the discussion and stressed that their job as coaches is to implement ways to be more effective.

"Because we're new to the job, our job is to listen and learn and look to implement ways where we can be more effective as players, as a team, and as coaches. What was really clear today was the pride the Pakistan players have in playing for Pakistan and how they want to inspire the country. That was really exciting to hear," said Gillespie.

The former Pak player also highlighted the difference between India and Pakistan pace attack by sighting Bangladesh's whitewash against Pakistan in the Test series before India Test.

While Karachi, where England completed their historic clean sweep over Pakistan the last time in 2022, was out of the window, Rawalpindi wasn't considered an option due to a major international conference in Islamabad from October 15-16.

The first Test begins on October 7, while the second one is scheduled four days later on October 15. Both teams will move to Rawalpindi for the third and final Test starting October 24. The stadium work made PCB think of playing one Test in Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) with Sharjah and Dubai out of the question due to upcoming Women's T20 World Cup shifted from Bangladesh.

PCB chairman Mohasin Naqvi, while inspecting Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore, apparently confirmed the England series being played in Pakistan with Multan and Rawalpindi as the venues.

It is, however, still unclear that which venue will host the relocated Karachi Test. With Shanghai Corporation Organisation (SCO) summit scheduled in Islamabad on October 15-16, Rawalpindi, the twin city of the capital, doesn't look an ideal venue for the second Test.

England Cricket Board (ECB), meanwhile, has also given the go-ahead to play the series in Pakistan. England coach Brendon McCullum, however, wants the venues to be finalised quickly so they can name the squad accordingly.

The series against England could be defining for Pakistan skipper Shan Masood who's undergoing some scrutiny following the two-Test series loss against Bangladesh.

Before losing 0-2 to Bangladesh at home, Pakistan also lost 0-3 against Australia earlier this year. This would be Masood's third series as Test skipper after replacing Babar Azam in the aftermath of 2023 ODI World Cup where Pakistan failed to make it to the semis.

PCB to host England Test series entirely in Pakistan

With each passing day, cricket fans are nearing the start of the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, scheduled in Pakistan during the February-March window next year. Though plenty has happened behind the scenes in the past month, including Jay Shah's appointment as the new ICC chair, which could eventually decide CT venue fate, the PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi is confident that Pakistan will retain the hosting rights, with the PCB constantly in touch with the BCCI secretary.

During the latest media interaction, Naqvi sounded optimistic about BCCI and the Indian Government allowing the Indian Team to travel to Pakistan for the first time since 2008 for the multi-team tournament.

“Champions Trophy will be held in Pakistan, we are in touch with the BCCI Secretary,” PCB chairman Naqvi said during a media interaction, as quoted by The Indian Express. “[We are] also in contact with the boards of the teams participating in the Champions Trophy.”

Even last year, when Pakistan was supposed to host the 2023 Asia Cup, the BCCI decided against sending the team, with the Asian Cricket Council, headed by Jay Shah, deciding to add Sri Lanka as the co-host, with all India games rescheduled in the Island Nation, including the final.

Besides, the PCB began preparations for the eight-team tournament, with construction resuming at the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore. The remaining two venues finalised for the Champions Trophy are the National Stadium in Karachi and Pindi Stadium in Rawalpindi.

“The basement of Gaddafi Stadium will be constructed by September 30. Each floor will be completed in a three-week period. The front building would consist of a steel structure. The main building of Gaddafi Stadium will be completed by December 31.

“Pindi Stadium will have to be completely demolished and rebuilt; the seats will be installed in the stadium before the Champions Trophy. The renovation at Karachi’s [National Stadium] will also be completed before the Champions Trophy,” Naqvi concluded.

BCCI has yet to take final call

Despite being approached several times, the BCCI officials have kept mum over their stance of not sending the Indian Team across the border.

Neither the BCCI President Roger Binny nor Shah has given any verdict, with everything surrounding this ICC event remaining in the air.

‘Pakistan will host Champions Trophy, we are in touch with BCCI secretary’, says PCB chair Mohsin Naqvi

Pakistan Test skipper Shan Masood says that they have to get their fitness better in order to compete in the red-ball cricket. The comments come as Pakistan lost both the Tests against Bangladesh at home. Pakistan lost the first Test by 10 wickets and the second by six wickets, losing the series 2-0.

"The harsh realities are that as a Test-playing nation, we need to get fitter. We need to have that mental and physical ability to last five days. And to last a series, which can be 10 to 15 days. So, that's the challenge that we have a month now before England, and once we get to England, it's going to be a really busy season domestically and internationally. So the boys have to pull their socks up and come back with their best," said the skipper after loss in second Test on Tuesday (Sep 3).

Pakistan, after losing the first Test, dropped Nasim Shah and Shaheen Shah Afridi for the second Test and were criticised for the decision.

"We can't be harsh on them because they're playing all three formats. If Shaheen has played consistently for a year, you can't just throw them in every game. And you have to build up your stocks as well. So we've got a lot to look at," said Masood.

Masood also acknowledged the team's failure but said that they are 'heading in the right direction.'

"You always learn from your mistakes. And you try and give people a chance. And I think that we're heading in the right direction; we have been consistent with selection. We had Khurram, Muhammad Ali Daisy, and Mir Hamza play this test series. We went, uh, trying to keep consistency with red ball performances as well. We've got Shaheen and Nasim back in the fold as well," said Masood.

Former Pakistan chief selector Mohammad Wasim opened up on Babar Azam and slammed the right-handed batter. Wasim, who served as the chief selector during the star batter's captaincy era from 2020-2022, stated that Babar was 'very stubborn' and got upset whenever the selection committee made changes to the squad. However, Wasim revealed, more often than not, he had to step in to make him accept the changes.

Babar was named Pakistan's T20I captain in 2020 before he became the all-format skipper later that year. While he had a good start to his captaincy career, it went downhill from 2022. Under him, Pakistan failed to win the Asia Cup 2022 (T20Is) and the T20 World Cup, ending as the finalists on both occasions and failed to even reach the semifinals of the 2023 ODI World Cup, in India. After the mega event, he stepped down as the all-format skipper before Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) reappointed him as the white-ball captain before this year's T20 WC.

Under Babar, Pakistan failed to make it to the Super 8s of the 2024 T20 WC, eventually won by Team India. At present, his white-ball captaincy future isn't certain.
