The PCB, however, didn't give details behind Kirsten's sudden resignation. PAK coach Gillespie’s role confined to ‘match-day strategy’ as PCB reallocates decision-making duty elsewhere

India's Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has dismissed any reports of India-Pakistan cricket talks resuming following foreign minister S Jaishankar’s recent visit to Islamabad with the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 looming.

After returning home in Jan 2025, Pakistan will host a two-Test series versus West Indies and an ODI tri-series featuring New Zealand and South Africa in the run-up to the ICC Champions Trophy, also to be held in Pakistan. Post that, the Asian giants&nbsp;will leave for New Zealand for a white-ball series before the next edition of the Pakistan Super League (PSL) kicks off.

Another source pointed out, "Babar was captain in all three formats for more than three years, but Kirsten and the selectors have reservations over whether Rizwan could handle the workload in the coming months while also leading the side in ODIs and T20Is."&nbsp;

It is possible that the PCB might have separate ODI and T20I captains or appoint a strong vice-captain to Rizwan, for him to take ample breaks and manage his workload.

For the white-ball vice-captaincy, Shadab Khan, Saim Ayub, Test captain Shan Masood, and Shaheen are the obvious choices. They can also be considered for the captaincy role if Rizwan declines the offer or is overlooked.

Though plenty has happened behind the scenes in the past month, including Jay Shah's appointment as the new ICC chair, which could eventually decide CT venue fate, the PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi is confident that Pakistan will retain the hosting rights, with the PCB constantly in touch with the BCCI secretary.

During the latest media interaction, Naqvi sounded optimistic about BCCI and the Indian Government allowing the Indian Team to travel to Pakistan for the first time since 2008 for the multi-team tournament. &nbsp;

“Champions Trophy will be held in Pakistan, we are in touch with the BCCI Secretary,” PCB chairman Naqvi said during a media interaction, as quoted by The Indian Express. “[We are] also in contact with the boards of the teams participating in the Champions Trophy.”

Even last year, when Pakistan was supposed to host the 2023 Asia Cup, the BCCI decided against sending the team, with the Asian Cricket Council, headed by Jay Shah, deciding to add Sri Lanka as the co-host, with all India games rescheduled in the Island Nation, including the final.

“The basement of Gaddafi Stadium will be constructed by September 30. Each floor will be completed in a three-week period. The front building would consist of a steel structure. The main building of Gaddafi Stadium will be completed by December 31.

“Pindi Stadium will have to be completely demolished and rebuilt; the seats will be installed in the stadium before the Champions Trophy. The renovation at Karachi’s [National Stadium] will also be completed before the Champions Trophy,” Naqvi concluded.
