Former Pakistan batter Ahmed Shehzad has lashed out at the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) for deliberately denying him the opportunity to represent the nation and play franchise cricket. Shehzad took a dig at all the six franchises in the Pakistan Super League (PSL) claiming all of them denied him entry into the competition. He detailed - without elucidating - that he knew "exactly the reasons why I'm not made part of the PSL.” The batter has now decided to retire from the format claiming he is keeping his self-respect intact.

Shehzad makes big claim

"I have tried really hard in domestic cricket consistently in the last few years, and did reasonably well in the National T20 Cup just before the PSL draft. There seems a deliberate effort to keep me out, even when franchises have opted for other performers with inferior numbers than me," he said.

"But when everything is pre-planned it doesn't really matter. I don't know whose responsibility it is to get top domestic performers in the PSL then," he added.

Shehzad was the epicenter in Quetta Gladiators’ success in the 2019 PSL season when they won the title. He played a superb match-winning knock in the final as Gladiators beat Peshawar Zalmi in a one-sided contest. The title remains the only success story for Quetta Gladiators, who got knocked out in the group stage in each of the last four seasons.

The 32-year-old Shehzad, however, had a poor campaign in the 2020 season as he scored just 61 runs in seven matches. The poor campaign proved to be the final straw for the player and has since not appeared in the PSL. Despite being a free agent, no franchise has intended to get the services of the former national team batter. He scored 1077 runs in 45 PSL matches at a strike rate of 120.06 and was the first Pakistani to score a hundred in T20I cricket.

At the international level, Shehzad has represented Pakistan in 81 matches scoring 2605 runs with a best of 124. He averages 32.56 and has six hundreds and 14 fifties for the national side while also playing 59 T20I and 13 Test matches.

Recently, Simon Doull -- former New Zealand cricketer-turned-commentator -- made heads turn with his alleged controversial statement on Pakistan. In a recent statement that went viral, it was believed that the New Zealander, who is popular for his commentary stints worldwide, opened up on his experience in Pakistan and said 'living in Pakistan is like being in a jail'.

While Doull's alleged statement spread like wildfire on social media platforms, he recently opened up on the claims and slammed the fake remark. The fake quote was attributed to Geo News which stated, "Living in Pakistan is like living in jail. I was not allowed to go out as Babar Azam fans were waiting for me. And I stayed in Pakistan without food for many days. Even I was mentally tortured, but by the grace of God, I somehow escaped from Pakistan."

It seemed as if he was eager to score every run in the chase and targetted every side of the ground. By virute of his memorable knock, Roy notched up the highest individual score in PSL history. Meanwhile, the Gladiators' run-chase of 241 is now the highest in the tournament, second-best in domestic T20s and fourth-best in T20s overall. RECORDS GALORE Highest totals in PSL 247/2 - Islamabad United (IU) versus Peshawar Zalmi (2021) 245/2 - Multan Sultans (MKS) versus Quetta Gladiators (2022) 243/2 - Quetta Gladiators against Peshawar Zalmi (2023) 241/3 - Lahore Qalandars (LQ) versus Peshawar Zalmi (2023) 240/2 - Peshawar Zalmi vs Quetta Gladiators (2023) Highest individual scores in PSL 145* (63) - Jason Roy (QG vs PZ, 2023) 127* (59) - Colin Ingram (Karachi Kings vs QG, 2019) 117* (60) - Cameron Delport (Islamabad United cs LQ, 2019) 117 (62) - Sharjeel Khan (Islamabad United vs PZ, 2016) 117 (67) - Martin Guptill (QG vs KK, 2023) After this loss, Babar-led Peshawar remain on the fourth spot but need to pull up their socks in order to reach the playoffs. Gladiators, on the other hand, are already out of contention.

Babar Azam is one of the most talented batters in current times in the modern era. He is among the top-five batters across formats currently, at the top spot in ODIs, and is regarded by many to become a legend by the time he signs off from the highest level. At times, he has been slammed for his ordinary strike rate in T20Is and most recently, Rawalpindi Express Shoaib Akhtar lashed out at him for not being able to communicate in English. Now, the former pacer took an indirect dig at him while praising Azam Khan's performances in the ongoing Pakistan Super League (PSL) 2023.

After Azam Khan played a blinder in Islamabad United's 202-run chase versus Karachi Kings, Akhtar was left impressed by the youngster. He appreciated his well-compiled inning and also for how 'smartly he spoke in the interview'. Azam slammed a match-winning 41-ball 72*, laced with 8 fours and 4 sixes, at a whopping strike rate of 175.61. He is the son of former wicketkeeper-batter Moin Khan.

Akhtar praised Azam and said while speaking to Suno News, "I found Azam Khan to be a responsible guy who can build innings, not just slog. He spoke smartly in the interview as well, and it felt nice to hear him speak like that as he talked about his performance. When I was playing 20 years ago, I didn't care how I spoke. But in today's era, being in the media is part of your job. I can only indicate and pinpoint for you, ‘this is a problem, please go and correct it. It's for your own benefit'. He (Azam) looked like captaincy material with the way he spoke."

'It's not about winning ICC Player of the Year...': Akhtar's indirect dig at Babar while lauding Azam Khan

Pakistan star Babar Azam recently won the ICC Player of the Year award, in January, and remains his side's top batter across formats. He is among the top-five batters across formats in ICC rankings, being the top ODI batsman, but has often faced criticism for his slow strike rate and captaincy. In the recent past, Babar-led Pakistan have lost home Tests and T20Is versus Australia, England, an ODI series to visitors New Zealand and failed to win the final of Asia Cup and T20 World Cup last year.

Thus, Babar's captaincy and strike rate have often been criticised by many former players and experts of the game. Nonetheless, the 28-year-old continues to be backed by his current crop of players. The likes of Md Rizwan, Shadab Khan, Shaheen Afridi have supported under-fire Babar and now Shadab Khan also joined the bandwagon.

We watch a lot of news on criticism of the team, but we don't get bothered by it as our mutual goal is to play for our country), Shan said while speaking with a local TV channel as reported by Cricket Pakistan.

The Pakistan Super League (PSL) 2023 edition got underway, in Pakistan, on February 13 (Monday). All eyes are many marquee players in the tournament who will look to put up a solid show whereas many discarded cricketers will hope for a memorable run to make a comeback into their respective national sides. Among the discarded players, Umar Akmal will hope for a smooth run in PSL 2023, where he is representing the Quetta Gladiators.

Ahead of the Gladiators' opening clash, where they face Md Rizwan-starrer Multan Sultans, Umar lashed out at a reporter when he was asked about his fitness and knack of uploading videos on Tik Tok. To this, Umar snapped at the journalist and said, "It is my personal life and it is in front of everyone. It would be better if you refrain from asking such questions."

Further, Umar also asserted that nothing is wrong with his fitness, claiming to be “superfit”. “Fitness is in front of you. I am not the only one. If you ask other players about it, they will also answer it in the same way,” he said. “I have worked very hard on my fitness and I am feeling super fit,” the swashbuckling right-hander added. Here's the video:

The schedules of the 2025 editions of the Pakistan Super League and the Indian Premier League in the summer are destined to clash with each other. This is because of Pakistan's packed home season as hosts of that year's edition of the ICC Champions Trophy.

The IPL's action kicks off in March and goes on for two and a half months to end at the beginning of June. Although the PSL usually commences at the beginning of the year in January and goes on till February, the Pakistan Cricket Board was forced to postpone the tournament to March and May due to their obligations as the host of the Champions Trophy in February 2025.

Pakistan Super League to clash with IPL in 2025, here's why

Former Pakistan captain Salman Butt has called the comparisons between the Indian Premier League (IPL) and the Pakistan Super League (PSL) useless insisting that PSL should focus on doing the best with the available resources. IPL, which is arguably the biggest T20 league in the world has often been pitted against other T20 tournaments across the globe, including PSL.

Ever since its inception in 2008, IPL has gone on to become one of the best T20 leagues in the world attracting the best players from across the globe. In terms of both quality and finances, IPL stands tall among the best T20 leagues in the world. However, since the introduction of the PSL, several former Pakistan cricketers have made comparisons between the two leagues.

Butt believes the comparisons between IPL and PSL are useless as there is a vast difference in the quality of cricket and the finances involved. The former Pakistan captain also advised PCB to maintain their limits and try to make proper utilisation of whatever resources are available to them.

"To develop animosity with players or aspire to be like IPL, is useless and has no logic behind it. It's better to calm down and maintain your limits. The limits are whatever resources we have, we are doing our best. The franchises are trying their best and have given players extra money numerous times," Butt said in a YouTube video.

The franchises are trying their best and have given players extra money numerous times," Butt said in a YouTube video. 'I know where India's economy is': Ramiz Raja defends his 'we'll see who goes to play IPL over PSL' remark

The Indian Premier League (IPL) started way back in 2008. Since the inaugural edition, the cash-rich league has grown from strength to strength and created a huge market for the expansion of T20 cricket across the globe. It led to the start of various T20 leagues worldwide and, thus, has been a stepping stone in the rise of the shortest format of the game.

After IPL, the likes of Pakistan Super League (PSL), Bangladesh Premier League (BPL), Big Bash League (BBL), etc. have come into existence. Many times debate sparks as to which is the biggest league among all. However, most experts of the game and ardent fans believe IPL remains a level higher than all. Recently, former Pakistan spinner Danish Kaneria made a big claim on IPL, comparing it with PSL.

The Indian Premier League (IPL) led to being a huge booster for T20 cricket worldwide. It led to the expansion of the shortest format and the formation of various T20 leagues across the globe.
"When the cricket economy grows in Pakistan, our respect will rise. The main driver of that financial economy is PSL. If we take PSL to an auction model, increase the purse, then I'll put it in IPL bracket. Then we'll see who goes to play IPL over the PSL," the PCB chief had said.

To this, former Indian opener-turned-commentator Aakash Chopra has reacted and schooled Ramiz. Chopra made an entire video, comparing PSL and IPL, on his Youtube channel and responded to Ramiz's claims by saying, "Even if you do an auction instead of drafts, it is not going to happen, you will not see a player playing for 16 crores in the PSL. It cannot happen at all, market dynamics are not going to allow that to happen, it's as simple as that."

Chopra was brutal in his assessment and further asserted, "To be very honest, Chris Morris' one ball, when he played last time, was more expensive than the players' salary in other leagues. Is it even possible to compete or compare yourself with the IPL, whether it is PSL, BBL, The Hundred or the CPL? Is it a slightly misplaced judgment?"

"The price is decided based on how much money you get from the rights, at what price the teams are sold and then there is a total purse according to which you play. All these are interlinked, they are not separate. If someone sees them separately, he is going to get defeated," opined the former India player.

"The story starts with the broadcaster on what value it puts on a property. The biggest thing India has is the people who watch, they are the ones who pay a lot of money, our 130 crores public. That is the asset we have that nobody else has," added Chopra.

It cannot happen at all, market dynamics are not going to allow that to happen, it's as simple as that." Is it even possible to compete or compare yourself with the IPL, whether it is PSL, BBL, The Hundred or the CPL? Is it a slightly misplaced judgment?" "The price is decided based on how much money you get from the rights, at what price the teams are sold and then there is a total purse according to which you play. ALSO READ | Huge sigh of relief for CSK!
