Per that report, Ashwin contemplated retiring from international cricket (following New Zealand Tests at home) owing to a troubled knee issue; he remained undecided till he landed in Perth - the venue for the first BGT Test.
Ashwin’s family also urged him to think it through and that the spinner decided on taking a final call on how things unfold Down Under; he, however, on Tuesday (Dec 17) informed his family that he is retiring the next day, the day five of the Gabba Test. 
Rohit also mentioned during the post-match presser that he and Ashwin had a brief chat about Ashwin’s future (upon Rohit’s arrival in Perth), with the skipper convincing him to stick around for the second game (the Pink-Ball Test in Adelaide), which Ashwin played, replacing Washington Sundar in the XI. 
Though he was in contention to retain his place for the third match, the management decided to replace him with Jadeja. That, however, is assumed to be the final nail in the coffin. 
The report also suggested that Ashwin informed each member of the BGT-bound Test squad individually about his decision to retire, which shocked most players.
Ashwin stood a chance to play either at the MCG or the SCG – the venues for the final two matches, but Jadeja’s 77 with the bat more or less sealed his chances of playing in the remainder of BGT, forcing Ashwin to take a call midway through the series.

Ashwin will return home on Thursday (Dec 19) and might link up with his state team. 
With Tamil Nadu alive in the race for a Ranji Trophy playoff spot, Ashwin could play in the premier domestic tournament, pushing to relive a dream of winning the trophy that eluded his glorious career.
Besides, Ashwin will play for Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the IPL 2025.

In the US, outbreaks of the currently circulating H5N1 avian influenza viruses in wild birds and poultry have been ongoing since 2022. A report by the news agency AFP on Tuesday said that since this outbreak began, a total of 61 cases have been reported.

Paramilitary shelling of besieged Darfur city kills 10: Activists

India farmers' protest: 'Rail roko' agitation in Punjab disrupts train services, travellers face inconvenience

A passenger ferry with over 110 people capsized on Wednesday (Dec 18) near the Gateway of India in Mumbai, the police said. 13 people, including 10 passengers and three Navy personnel, lost their lives, said Maharashtra chief minister Devendra Fadnavis. 
Meanwhile, two others are critically injured. Around 101 people have been safely rescued by the authorities. 
The Neelkamal ferry was on way to Elephanta Islands when the speed boat circled it before crashing into it. 
The ferry had over 110 people on board, while the naval boat had six individuals, including two Navy personnel and four staff members, according to the reports. 
The search operation is being conducted by the Indian Coast Guard (ICG) ships. 
The videos of the incident soon went viral, showing ongoing rescue operations.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said that boats from the Navy, Coast Guard, Port, and Police teams have been immediately dispatched for assistance. 
"We are in constant touch with the district and police administration, and fortunately, most of the passengers have been rescued. However, rescue operations are still ongoing. Orders have been given to the district administration to deploy all necessary resources for the operation," he added. 
He added that according to the preliminary information, five to seven people are still missing. "I will make a statement in the House as soon as I receive more detailed information."

Ravichandran Ashwin, the ace Indian spinner, announced his international retirement after the conclusion of the Gabba Test against Australia on Wednesday (Dec 18). Just before the umpires decided to call off the game due to rain interruption ahead of tea on day five, visuals of Virat Kohli and Ashwin hugging in the dressing room indicated what was about to unfold.
Following the game, Ashwin joined Team India captain Rohit Sharma for the post-game presser, announced his retirement, and calmly left the arena, as he did with Test cricket despite being the seventh highest-ranked bowler in the format.

A Delhi restaurant found a heartfelt way of honouring the memory of Atul Subhash, a Bengaluru techie who died by suicide earlier this month. A photograph of the bill from the Jumboking food outlet was shared by a Reddit user, that included a touching message at the end.
According to the user, his friend purchased food from the restaurant and noticed the message about Atul Subhash printed at the bottom of the bill. People have been paying tributes through social media posts and candlelight vigils for the man who lost his life.
“We deeply mourn the suicide of the techie Atul Subhash. His life was just as important as everyone else’s. RIP brother. We hope you finally found peace on the other side,” the message read.

Moved by the gesture, the user’s friend spoke with the outlet’s owner regarding it, to which the owner replied, "Not everything is about business to us. That life was important. We can’t bring him back, but at least we can put in efforts to spread his name and keep him alive in our memories.”
The image of the bill was later shared by Deepika Narayan Bhardwaj, a journalist and men’s rights advocate, on X as she expressed her gratitude for the gesture by the restaurant. 
"Everyone please join me in thanking Jumbokingburger for this really kind gesture of valuing life of Atul Subhash and reminding everyone to do so as well,” she wrote. “Incredible ways in which Atul will perhaps change this society forever for the better.”
The X post gained over 364k views and over 22k likes, with users applauding the gesture by the outlet in the comments section.

On Wednesday (Dec 18), Hong Kong's consumer watchdog announced that it is thinking about putting regulations on claw machines after receiving multiple complaints. The consumer council said a man spent around $64 within 45 minutes to win a waffle maker but got "nothing more than a few trinkets". The council further added that these machines "capitalise on consumers' enthusiasm for testing their luck". It also urged people to "spend rationally and be mindful of addiction".

In a statement, the council said, "The industry often modifies claw settings or introduces obstacles inside claw machines to make winning more challenging... Excessive difficulty or unfair settings could aggravate consumers." The council's chief said it's about time to review whether they should regulate the claw machine business or not. 
But Jayden Chen, the founder of a claw machine rental company in Singapore, talked to BBC and said the programmed machines are "actually part of the fun". He clarified that a player feels excited while using the claw machine and gets motivated to try again if not win the first time. He said there wouldn't be any fun if he or she won on the first try. 
"Regulations will kill off the fun element," Chen said.

In another case filed, a woman said every time she was about to move her desired toy to the chute, the machine loosened its grip. The machine had a "guaranteed grab" mechanism for people who had spent at least $12 without winning. That means on their next try, the claw would maintain its grip until the toy is taken out. The woman said the mechanism was a "dishonest trade practice".
The council has advised people to record a video of their gameplay so they have evidence at the time of complaining.

Hong Kong may impose regulations on 'unfair' claw machines

Cycling legend Rik Van Looy, renowned for his prowess in the one-day classics, has died at the age of 90, Belgian media reported on Wednesday. Van Looy was rated as the greatest cycling champion Belgium had produced until the arrival of five-time Tour de France winner Eddy Merckx. Known as the 'Emperor of Herentals' after the Belgian city where he lived, Van Looy delivered newspapers on his bicycle from the age of 12, turned professional at 20 and went on to chalk up 371 pro victories. 
He was a specialist in the one-day classics in his heyday in the 1950s and '60s, becoming the first cyclist, before Merckx and Roger De Vlaeminck, to win at least once all five of cycling's monuments - Milan-San Remo, the Tour of Flanders, Paris-Roubaix, Liege-Bastogne-Liege and the Tour of Lombardy.

The Delhi Police arrested four fake police officers for accusing college students of running a fake call centre and conducting a fake raid at their houses in West Delhi in which they confiscated Rs1.55 lakh (approx. $1,825) in cash and made them sit like roosters. 
All the accused, Manpreet Singh, 29, Junaid Wasid, 23, Kuldeep Singh, 22, and Sarabjeet Singh alias Prince, 22, were arrested by the police on Tuesday (Dec 17). 
All of them are residents of West Delhi and have been booked under charges of robbery with an attempt to cause grievous hurt or death.
The fake raid continued at the flat of the students for four hours on December 10. The imposters made the victims sit like roosters, took their photographs holding a gun and asked them to lock themselves in their own houses.

The victims, identified as Kunj Salve, Mohammad Areebul Hasan, Aditya Kumar Verma, Lovpreet Singh, Aditya Vaswani, and Sujanya Gupta, were students of Delhi University and were not involved in the call centre scam, said the police.
<h2>Here's what happened</h2>
In his complaint, Salve said that three men approached him and Vaswani at 9.30 pm (local time) on December 10 and claimed that they had video evidence which proved their involvement in a fake call centre.
The police officer said that the trio identified themselves as police staff and were later joined by an associate. 
Even though the students showed their college IDs and denied any wrongdoing, the mobile phones were forcibly confiscated by the four men and the students were brought to their flat to carry out searches.

All six students were then cornered by the accused and assaulted and their phones and laptops were seized. 
“After assaulting the students, the imposters demanded Rs25 lakh (approx $29440) as a bribe for not filing any case against them or arresting them. When the students refused to have any money, the accused threatened them with a gun and collected around Rs23,000 (approx. $270) cash before taking away their debit cards and details from which they withdrew around Rs1.32 lakh (approx. $1554),” said a police officer.
Police were able to reach out to the accused by tracking their phone numbers. Deputy Commissioner of Police Vichitra Veer said that they have recovered Rs 1 lakh (approx. $1177) of the stolen money, the car used in the crime and the pistol. 
“We identified all suspects through technical and manual investigation and arrested them. Efforts are being made to nab the person from whom the accused had procured the firearm," he said.

Yoon Suk Yeol, the impeached president of South Korea, failed to show up before the corruption watchdog of the country on Wednesday (Dec 18) after they summoned him for questioning over his failed attempt to impose martial law.
The parliament had stripped Yoon of his duties at the weekend after he imposed the short-lived martial law on December 3 which pushed the country into its worst political turmoil. 
The corruption investigation office's (CIO) investigators had summoned Yoon to their facility located in Seoul at 10 am (0100 GMT). The officials had to question him over the charges of abuse of power and insurrection which he was facing.

“President Yoon did not appear for his summons today,” said a CIO official, while speaking to AFP.
<h2>Yoon’s legal team says 'will comply with investigation' </h2>
The legal team of Yoon on Tuesday (Dec 17) said that he had not committed to insurrection and had taken the vow to fight the charges against him in the court, reported Yonhap news agency.
“While we do not consider the insurrection charges to be legally valid, we will comply with the investigation,” said Seok Dong-hyeon, who is in Yoon’s team.
This week, the CIO said that they had sent a summon to Yoon which was returned “undelivered” after an official at the presidential office did not accept it.
The no-show of Yoon on Wednesday (Dec 18) “will be considered as a failure to comply with the first summons”, said a CIO statement.
As per the investigators, they are planning to send a second summon, however, CIO chief Oh Dong-woon informed parliament on Tuesday (Dec 17) that they are reconsidering if they should issue an arrest warrant.

On Wednesday (Dec 18), the court asked Yoon to submit the martial law decree along with records of cabinet meetings which he had held before and after the imposition of martial law.
The judges have nearly six months to give their verdict on Yoon's case and a preliminary hearing has been scheduled for December 27.

"I understand he's playing a lot of cricket back home, but there have been some complaints about his knee as well. So, look, the last thing you want is the player coming here and then pulling out in the middle of the game. You know what happens when that kind of thing happens."
"So, there is no way we want to take that chance unless we are like, not 100%, 200% sure, we're not going to take any risk. But yeah, like I said in the last press conference, the door is open if those guys at the NCA feel that he is okay to go and recover and play, we'll be happy to have him,” Rohit continued.

''It's very nice here and I come from Rajasthan. And this frozen waterfall is so amazing to look at and we are enjoying the cold. The MeT Department of Kashmir Valley has attributed the weather condition in the region to the La Nina effect, which means cooler than average sea surface temperatures across the central and eastern Pacific. Cold wave leads to freezing of key water bodies in India's Jammu & Kashmir

The United States has assured the safety of the Indian Ambassador to the US Vinay Mohan Kwatra after a threat by India-listed terrorist Gurpatwant Singh Pannun.
A US Embassy Spokesperson, in response to a question by WION, said, "The US government is firmly committed to the security and safety of all diplomatic and consular personnel in the United States."

SFJ in a statement said that the Russian Embassy in Ottawa hacked Hardeep Singh Nijjar's telegram account which resulted in the killing of the terrorist. 
Nijjar, who was a listed terrorist in India and on Canada's no-fly list in 2016 was murdered in June 2023. His killing led to dramatic tensions between India and Canada as PM Trudeau claimed New Delhi's involvement in his killing.

Iranian lawmakers have asked to amend a bill that would impose tougher penalties on women who refuse to wear the mandatory hijab, local media reported on Wednesday.
The bill, already approved in parliament but not yet submitted to the government for final confirmation, has stirred a heated debate in Iran more than two years since nationwide protests erupted in part over the Islamic republic's dress code for women.
Shahram Dabiri, Iran's vice president for parliamentary affairs, has requested to hold off on sending the bill for approval, according to news agency ISNA.
"We requested that the law of chastity and hijab not be referred to the government," Dabiri was quoted by ISNA as saying, adding that "the parliament speaker requested an amendment to the bill."
Dabiri did not specify the nature of the amendment or provide a timeline for the process.
Lawmakers in September 2023 had approved the bill, officially the "Law on Supporting the Family through the Promotion of the Culture of Chastity and Hijab".
It has since won the approval of the Guardian Council, a body empowered to vet legislation.
The bill was initially meant to be referred to President Masoud Pezeshkian in December.
Pezeshkian, who could sign it into law, has expressed "reservations" about the text, citing numerous "ambiguities".
The 74-article bill tightens restrictions over women's public attire and threatens action against businesses who fail to enforce the dress code, according to the text carried by local media.

Jaspreet Singh, identified as an important on-ground operative for Landa and his associate Pattu Khaira, was allegedly involved in drug smuggling and extortion activities aimed at generating funds for the banned Babbar Khalsa International (BKI). 
Baljeet Singh, meanwhile, is accused of manufacturing weapons and supplying them to members of Landa's gang and other gangsters. The NIA alleged that he used social media to coordinate the arms supply.
"Baljeet was manufacturing weapons locally and using social media to supply them to operatives of the Landa gang. Baljeet was one of the various weapons suppliers with whom the terrorists had tied up across the country for supply of arms and ammunition," read the NIA statement.

He ends with 765 scalps—second-most by an Indian in internationals—and was hailed by many former cricketers for his contribution to Indian cricket. Sunil Gavaskar also lauded 'one heck of a cricketer' Ashwin but was critical of the timing of his call. The selection committee has picked so many players for a tour with a purpose. If there are any injuries, they can select from the reserve players to have in the team. So, Sydney is somewhere where there is a lot of support on offer for spinners. So India could have played with 2 spinners. You never know. He could have been there for sure. I don't know what the pitch in Melbourne will be like." "Normally, you tend to look at the end of the series. That's it. In the middle, it is not usual. Maybe Washington Sundar is ahead of him.
