South Africa batter Dewald Brevis is making inroads in international cricket this year, having already made headlines for his explosive outings in the T20Is against Australia earlier. With fame chasing him, he has someone to look up to and take inspiration from, and that person is none other than IPL and Chennai Super Kings veteran MS Dhoni, whose humility blew him away. Coming in as an injury replacement (at CSK) the past season, Brevis impressed all with his brief stint, including the management. Having played and spent time with MS Dhoni both on and off the field, Brevis learnt a lot about his gigantic aura, which everyone talks highly of and knew exactly why it happens so often. Awestruck by Dhoni’s humility, Brevis said, “The one thing I can just say from MS is his humbleness and who he is as a person. That stood out for me. How he is basically off the field, the time he has for players, for people. His room is always open. If he’s sleeping, that’s the only time it’s closed.” Brevis recalled how he, without hesitating, could enter Dhoni’s room and sit with him and chat with him about cricket and beyond. Also read | Asia Cup 2025: Jitesh Sharma likely to get nod in Playing XI, Sanju Samson to settle for a place on bench - Report “I found myself a few times in his room just sitting there, chatting to him about his hobbies, watching cricket, or anything he was busy with,” Brevis said in a video shared by CSK. “That’s just amazing, to see how he is off the field. IPL: CSK recruit Dewald Brevis speaks highly of veteran MS Dhoni, awestruck by his humility

MS Dhoni is back in the headlines but for all the wrong reasons, despite not doing anything about it. Dhoni remains Team India’s most successful white-ball captain, having won all three ICC titles; however, there is a darker side to his success story, something which former Indian seamer Irfan Pathan disclosed during a now-viral interview. While Pathan revealed how those who used to prepare hookah for Dhoni (in his hotel room) were the ones getting regular opportunities in the team, Yuvraj Singh’s father, Yograj Singh, accused Mahi, as the fans used to call Dhoni, of ill-treating his teammates. During an old interview with Sports Tax, Pathan revealed, “Yes, I asked him. During the 2008 Australia series, Mahi bhai's statement came out in the media that Irfan wasn't bowling well. I thought I had bowled well throughout the series, so I went and asked Mahi bhai,” Pathan said. “I don't have a habit of setting up a hookah in someone's room or talking about this. Is MS Dhoni joining India's backroom staff for 2026 T20 World Cup? Ex-teammate addresses rumour

Ravichandran Ashwin is all over the news following his IPL retirement call earlier this week. The ace cricketer, who stepped aside from international cricket midway through the away Australian series late last year, has revealed the reason behind calling time on his Indian Premier League career. Ashwin, 38, part of the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) squad in IPL 2025, featured in nine games, picking up just seven wickets at an economy rate of over nine. Although rumours of CSK wanting to trade him for another player or release him altogether made headlines recently, Ashwin’s decision to retire revolved around other factors. Speaking on his YouTube channel, Ashwin explained what prompted him to hang up his IPL boots 16 years after making his debut for the same franchise. His age and fitness, however, emerge as the prime factors behind this call, as Ashwin lauds his former team captain and cricket giant, MS Dhoni, for maintaining fitness and delivering even at 44. “I was thinking if I can play IPL next year. Three months of IPL is a little too much for me. It’s draining. This is one of the reasons why I’m awe-struck by seeing someone like MS Dhoni. As you grow older, the bandwidth to play IPL becomes lesser,” Ashwin said while speaking on his YouTube channel. Earlier, taking to his social media handles, Ashwin posted about his retirement decision. “Special day and hence a special beginning. “They say every ending will have a new start, my time as an IPL cricketer comes to a close today, but my time as an explorer of the game around various leagues begins today🤓. “Would like to thank all the franchisees for all the wonderful memories and relationships over the years and most importantly the @IPL and the @BCCI for what they have given me until now. Look forward to enjoying and making the most of what’s ahead of me🙏” he wrote.

Meanwhile, over a decorated career spanning 16 years, Ashwin featured for several IPL teams, including CSK, Punjab Kings, and Rajasthan Royals, among others, leading the Punjab side in the meantime. A multi-time IPL winner with CSK, Ashwin picked 187 wickets in 221 matches, at a healthy economy of 7.20. With the bat in hand, Ashwin scored 833 runs, including a fifty. He, however, harbours hopes of playing franchise cricket elsewhere, with England’s ‘The Hundred’ emerging as his top choice.

Ravi Ashwin wishes to explore opportunities elsewhere following his IPL and international retirement, with England's ‘The Hundred’ emerging as the top choice.

‘Tired’ Ashwin awe-struck by MS Dhoni’s fitness as he reveals reason behind IPL retirement

The former Indian Spinner, Ravichandran Ashwin, surprised the cricket world by announcing his retirement from the Indian Premier League (IPL) on Wednesday (August 27). The veteran spinner had rejoined Chennai Super Kings (CSK) during the IPL 2025 mega-auction and was expected to continue for a few more years. However, he decided to step away from the league and will now focus on playing in overseas tournaments. In a post on X, Ashwin wrote, “Special day and hence a special beginning. They say every ending will have a new start. My time as an IPL cricketer comes to a close today, but my time as an explorer of the game around various leagues begins today.”

In the mega IPL auction, last year, Chennai Super Kings showed strong interest in bringing Ashwin back to the team and eventually bought him for ₹9.75 crore, outbidding Lucknow Super Giants and Rajasthan Royals. Interestingly, Ashwin’s deal was nearly ₹6 crore (5.75 crore) higher than what CSK paid to retain ex-captain MS Dhoni (₹4 crore). It means he earned ₹5.75 crore more than CSK’s stand-in skipper. Despite the big signing in the mega auction, Ashwin’s 2025 season didn’t go as well as planned. He managed only 7 wickets in 9 matches at a bowling economy of 9.13. Overall in IPL, Ashwin has 187 wickets in 221 games at a bowling economy of 7.20. Also Read - 5 records of Ravichandran Ashwin which no other Indian has achieved Ashwin’s association with CSK in 2009 and his consistent performances in the IPL helped him earn a call-up to the India team, and he was also part of CSK’s title-winning squads in 2010 and 2011. When CSK returned to the IPL in 2018 after suspension, they tried to bring Ashwin back but failed to secure him. Apart from CSK, Ashwin also played for other teams — Punjab Kings, Delhi Capitals, and later Rajasthan Royals before finally returning to CSK. He also played under Dhoni’s leadership at Rising Pune Supergiant in 2016.

Former India opener Virender Sehwag has revealed shocking details on contemplating ODI retirement long before he actually did. During the infamous 2007/08 tri-series Down Under, involving Australia and Sri Lanka, the then-Indian captain MS Dhoni made some tough calls, including rotating and dropping star openers - Sehwag and Sachin from the playing XI after the first few games, which led to speculations of growing unrest within the Indian dressing room. Although that episode keeps popping up over the years, Sehwag revealed the repercussions of it, which, at one point, made him consider his ODI retirement, only for Sachin Tendulkar’s advice to do a U-turn on that. Sehwag was like none India has ever had. The most flamboyant opener the game has seen was a megastar in 2008 when India toured Australia for a long tour. Despite that, Dhoni benched him over fitness and form issues, and Sehwag did not play any part in that series afterwards. Also read | Indian dressing room needs Rohit, Kohli: Raina backs stalwarts amid uncertain future Speaking on Padamjeet Sehrawat's podcast, Sehwag revealed his thought process after MS dropped him from the playing XI, and how, by just approaching Sachin on this, he could revive his ODI career. “In the 2007-08 series against Australia, I played the first three matches and then MS Dhoni dropped me from the side. Former India coach Gary Kirsten has recently revealed that the BCCI selectors had a tough time in deciding whether to include Yuvraj Singh in the 2011 ODI WC squad or not. He said it was a very close call at that time but it was him and captain MS Dhoni who strongly supported Yuvraj Singh selection in the team. It was very clear that in the end their opinion regarding the selection of Yuvraj Singh in the team won. Yuvraj went on to become the Player of the Tournament and helped India to win their second ICC ODI World Cup after 28 years. During the 2011 ODI World Cup the left-handed batter from the Punjab scored 362 runs in eight matches at an impressive average of over 90.50. And look at the World Cup he ended up having,” Kirsten told Rediff.com. "I was always very fond of Yuvraj. Legendary India captain MS Dhoni is celebrating his 44th birthday on Monday (July 7) as he continues to grace the game on and the off field. During his career, Dhoni played with players like Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma and others, building great chemistry with them. Revisiting a famous quote from Virat in 2023, he denied Dhoni the top spot in favour of his RCB teammate AB de Villiers for the quick running between the wickets.
When Virat Kohli chose AB de Villiers over Mahi
“I’ve answered this before, AB is the fastest I’ve ever run with. The only other player I’ve had such great coordination with is MS Dhoni. I didn’t even need to call while running with them; we just understood each other," Kohli had said in 2023 while speaking on The Quick Singles. During a conversation with AB de Villiers on the show The Quick Singles, Virat Kohli was asked who is the fastest runner between the wickets he has ever played with. Without hesitation, Kohli named the former South African star, AB de Villiers. When AB de Villiers was asked the same question, he chose his fellow South African, Faf du Plessis. "Mine is controversial as well," De Villiers said. "He is the best runner I have run with as well, it's Faf. But he's run me out at least seven times in my career. We have had some worst misunderstandings." Kohli was also asked a more tricky question, who he thought was the worst runner between the wickets. With a laugh, he named Indian teammate Cheteshwar Pujara. "It was a Centurion Test match on the tour of 2018. He was run out in both the innings. Pujara was run-out in the first innings of the Centurion Test and I said, 'It's OK', such things happen in cricket; Cheteshwar Pujara played a shot in the second innings and called Parthiv Patel for 3rd run, Pujara himself was running towards the danger end and he got run-out again and that too by a big margin. When the replay was shown there was no one on the screen, just Quinny taking the bails off. I was like you have run yourself in the first innings how can you be so brave to take on the quickest man on the field and then not be seen in the frame when the replay is shown. I was like my god. That is the worst call I have seen in my life," Kohli explained the decision after picking Pujara.
