<p>Former Indian captain Sunil Gavaskar has expressed bemusement after India decided to go with Shardul Thakur instead of Mohammed Shami for the World Cup clash against Afghanistan in New Delhi on Wednesday (Oct 10).&nbsp;</p>

<p>Shami, who had been a regular feature in the Indian lineup ahead of the World Cup, missed the first game as the management went ahead with R Ashwin on the spinning track of Chennai. However, many believed that Shami was an automatic choice for the flat Delhi pitch.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"It's a difficult call, but I guess as a group, you're looking to try and give as many of your players a little bit of an outing. And I would have thought with what Mohammed Shami had done against them in 2019, getting a hat trick and turning the game in the way he would get a go, because it's just a psychological thing. It's psychological," said Gavaskar.&nbsp;</p>

<p>India’s Shubman Gill has opened up his return to the Punjab Cricket Association (PCA) Stadium in Mohali as he lived the dream of playing an international match at the venue. Gill, representing Punjab at the domestic circuit started his playing career in the surroundings of the PCA stadium where India beat Australia in the first ODI on Friday, September 22. This was Gill’s first international match at the venue having started his young career representing Punjab.</p>

<h2><strong>Gill opens up on dream return</strong></h2>

<p>“I was 7 years old when we came to Mohali for the first time. Since I had seen so many matches here as a spectator, it was a dream for me to play an international match in Mohali. I'd played a couple of IPL matches but to play an international match with my family watching was special,” said Gill in the post-match on Friday.</p>

<p>The sensational youngster has been in top form in 2023 having scored six international hundreds and three IPL hundreds. He was on course for another ton on Friday, before he was dismissed by Adam Zampa on 74. His innings consisted of 6 fours and a couple of sixes while striking at a rate of more than 100. His impressive opening stand with Ruturaj Gaikwad (71) was the feature of the innings as they stitched a 142-run stand for the opening wicket.</p>

Asia Cup 2023: Former cricketer questions India's Playing XI vs Pak, says 'this shows signs of insecurity'

<p>The return of ace Indian seamer Jasprit Bumrah to the white-ball setup has bolstered the bowling attack ahead of the much-anticipated India-Pakistan game in Pallekele, Kandy, on September 2. While addressing the media upon landing in Colombo, his fellow teammate, Mohammed Shami, said Bumrah’s presence has completed the trio (Bumrah, Shami and Siraj) and it all depends now on the team management on who will play on the big day.</p>

<p>Bumrah was out of action since September last year due to a back injury and missed all the action since then, including the 2022 T20 World Cup, IPL 2023 and WTC Final 2023 against Australia. Upon attaining complete fitness, Bumrah returned to the side for the three-match T20I series against Ireland and later got selected for the Asia Cup 2023.</p>

<p>Shami, India’s most experienced seamer off all three, admitted the Indian Team missed Bumrah in the past year.</p>

<p>"For a long time, we didn't have Jassi (Bumrah), so we felt the loss of a good player like him. You sometimes feel like 'I wish this player was there', to make your combination set."</p>

<p>"So having Jassi, especially in the white-ball format, has made our bowling very strong. He's looking fit and he's playing well, hopefully, we have a good Asia Cup," Shami said.</p>

<p>Shami, who has played 90 ODIs, picking 162 wickets, is among a handful of bowlers who is a threat with both new and old ball. Known to be a better Test bowler, mainly for his ability to reverse swing, Shami said he doesn’t have an ego about his bowling, remaining keen to deliver for the team whenever asked.</p>

<p>"I don't have any hesitancy to bowl with the new ball or the old ball. I don't have an ego like that. All three of us (Bumrah, Shami &amp; Siraj) are bowling very well, so it depends on the management on who will play," Shami told Star Sports ahead of the Asia Cup.</p>

<p>"Depends on whether I have the new ball or whether the team requires me at any stage during the match, I'm always on," said India's best exponent of swing bowling in current times,” the right-hand seamer added.</p>

<h2>Bowling in the right area is the only plan</h2>

<p>When asked about his plans to replicate his heroics in white-ball cricket the way he does with the red, Shami said sticking to bowling in the right areas will only bring success irrespective of the format.</p>

<p>"There is too much talk about the white ball or red ball, if you bowl in the right areas, I don't think that there is any difficulty in any ball," Shami said</p>

<p>"There is only one goal, to go and give 100%, the result will come running to us if we give our 100%. So, it is very important to focus and execute, it's a very simple plan," he added.</p>

The Men in Blue will then travel to Ireland for a three-match T20Is before getting ready for the Asia Cup – whose future is also in limbo.</p>

<p>ACC board members are also expected to be in India this weekend for the IPL final, and this is where the Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) President, Mirwais Ashraf and BCCI secretary Jay Shah could sit together and decide on the dates for the mini-white-ball series.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Following IPL 2023, where around a handful of young players, like every year, emerged as top performers, they will be given an extended run on the Ireland tour. <p>Shami now has 17 wickets in the IPL 2023 and went level with Tushar Deshpande of CSK while Punjab Kings (PBKS) star Arshdeep Singh, Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) man Mohammed Siraj and Shami’s teammate Rashid Khan have 15 wickets each.</p>

<p>With GT sitting in pole position to make the Playoffs, Shami and Rashid will stand a better chance to improve their numbers and thereby stand a better chance of winning the Purple Cap this season. A win for GT will see them go on 14 points which will see them get closer to the last four spot.</p>

<p>At the Wankhede Stadium, Shami accounted for three Australian wickets, two of which, Josh Inglis and Cameron Green, were bowled. Detailing on how it was to bowl in such conditions, Shami said earlier it wasn’t easy as it was hot, but later with the help of some breeze, he could get the ball to talk.</p>

<p>"The plan was to keep it simple. We had discussed in the team meeting as well to make a good start, to keep the ball in good areas and stick to our line and length," Shami told Siraj. "The heat was also an issue. When we bowled the first spell it was hot but later it got a bit better to bowl when the wind started blowing."</p>

<p>Ahead of the first One-Dayer, Shami didn’t train with the team. Explaining the reason behind the same, Shami said because he required rest to get back to being 100% after bowling nearly 40 overs in the Ahmedabad Test, he requested the management for extra rest.</p>

<p>"After 40 overs of the Ahmedabad Test, I needed 1-2 days to recover. I completed that recovery and came here for the match. The management accepted that I needed recovery. We have played so many matches that we know our skills and ability. So it is important that we recover properly to perform better," Shami added.</p>

<p>On the other hand, Mohammed Siraj opened up on his love of bowling in-swingers, especially to the lefties, during the Powerplay.</p>

The likes of Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Shami, Ishant Sharma, Mohammed Siraj, Umesh Yadav, Jaydev Unadkat, etc. form a lethal fast-bowling department for Team India. <p>The wily pacer added, "Then he made his debut in Kolkata (versus West Indies in 2013). As far as I remember, he picked nine wickets and helped India win. So after that, we also became very good friends. When he was going through some personal turmoil, whatever had happened to him, I felt he needed a support from someone outside and say to him, 'What happened, happened. If you focus on cricket, may be things will become okay'. May be that is why Shami is a totally different bowler now."</p>

Whatever anger it is that you have, take it out on your body. We are going to send you to National Cricket Academy and want you to go there for 4 weeks and stay there. You will not go home, and only head to NCA. It suited Shami also because he had a problem going to Kolkata then so he spent 5 weeks at the NCA. I still remember the call he made and told me 'Sir, I have become like a stallion. Make me run as much as you want'. The 5 weeks that he spent there, he realised what working on fitness can do to him."</p>

<p>At the time, Jahan's counsel argued that Shami pay a monthly alimony of $12,300 (Rs 10 lakh) which will be divided into two parts - personal alimony ($ 8,600) and child allowance ($3,700).&nbsp;</p>

<p>“Rs 50,000 is minimal for me so I have to challenge this. It’s true that the verdict is in my favour but I will go to the high court as the stipulated money for my maintenance is very less considering the income of Shami,” Jahan was quoted as saying by News 18.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Jahan added that she had spent a lot of money fighting legal battles over the years and thus she deserved the money to lead a 'quality' life.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"Since I don’t have any financial support or earning, I only know how I arranged the money for so long. Thus, I deserve much more alimony for spending a quality life.”</p>

<p>Her counsel argued that since Shami's annual income stood at $850,000 (Rs 7 crore) for the financial year 2020-21, according to income tax returns, the demand for $12,300 (Rs&nbsp;10 lakh) as alimony was not unjustified.</p>

Elaborating on what his role is or what has been asked out of him by the team management, Shami said, “My role hasn’t changed since I have come into the team. The only thing is to keep working on the fitness and diet. We have got big events coming up, so the aim is to contribute in every game.”</p>

<p>2023 is a big year for the Indian cricket team as they have some huge series coming up in the Border-Gavaskar series against Australia, then the Asia Cup followed by the much-awaited 50-over World Cup at home.</p>

<p>When asked about how is he managing his workload in this tight-scheduled cricket calendar, Shami said by staying in the good zone and by playing more matches he would like to prepare for the bigger events.</p>

<p>“I always prefer playing matches over practice. It is always better to play maximum numbers of games to get ready for a big event. The workload is being managed properly. I just hope the main players stay in a good zone ahead of the World Cup,” Shami added.</p>

Addressing the media after India’s eight-wicket win, Shami was asked about his role in the team, how is he managing his workload in this tight year of the World Cup and much more. To begin with Shami talked about the conditions in Raipur saying they weren’t as good as their bowling and the scorecard made it look. “The conditions were not as good as it seemed. They got out early, but conditions were not overtly bowler friendly. We dismissed them cheaply by bowling a testing length,” Shami said. Elaborating on what his role is or what has been asked out of him by the team management, Shami said, “My role hasn’t changed since I have come into the team. The only thing is to keep working on the fitness and diet. We have got big events coming up, so the aim is to contribute in every game.” 2023 is a big year for the Indian cricket team as they have some huge series coming up in the Border-Gavaskar series against Australia, then the Asia Cup followed by the much-awaited 50-over World Cup at home. When asked about how is he managing his workload in this tight-scheduled cricket calendar, Shami said by staying in the good zone and by playing more matches he would like to prepare for the bigger events. “I always prefer playing matches over practice. It is always better to play maximum numbers of games to get ready for a big event. The workload is being managed properly.
