Ace Indian seamer Mohammed Shami is all set to return to playing XI for the final Test against Australia in Ahmedabad as India eye a slot in the finals of the World Test Championship (WTC). Shami was rested for the third Test in Indore as part of the workload management drill by the BCCI and team management for the key players who are in the scheme of things for the 50-over World Cup.

Shami and Mohammed Siraj both of whom played in the first two Tests in Nagpur and Delhi and are also part of the ODI series that starts from March 17th in Mumbai, probably won’t play together in the final Test as Siraj is now expected to be rested for the Ahmedabad game. Umesh Yadav, who was picked in the playing XI in the third Test, is likely to retain his place for the deciding game.

As India currently lead the four-match series 2-1, having lost the previous match at the Holkar Stadium by nine wickets on a wicket that ICC rated ‘poor’, they will aim to win the final Test and qualify directly for the finals of WTC for the second time. As of now, only Australia has qualified for the WTC final, which is scheduled to take place at the Oval in London on June 7th.

"We haven't received any instructions from the Indian team management and our local curators are preparing a normal track as we have always done through the season," a state association source told PTI. IND vs AUS: Mohammed Shami set to return for final Test in Ahmedabad as India eye spot in WTC final

India have a solid pace attack at disposal. The likes of Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Shami, Ishant Sharma, Mohammed Siraj, Umesh Yadav, Jaydev Unadkat, etc. form a lethal fast-bowling department for Team India. Ishant, being the senior of the lot, has seen his compatriots' rise over the years. Recently, he opened up on Mohammed Shami and how the West Bengal pacer had impressed former Indian captain MS Dhoni during a net session almost a decade back, in 2013.

Speaking to Cricbuzz, on their 'Rise of New India' show, Ishant recalled the first time Shami bowled in Team India nets and described it as being “very skiddy”. The 34-year-old further added that Shami was called to the Indian net session in 2013 amid the presence of then captain Dhoni, who was thoroughly impressed with the speedster's skills.

"I had heard of a bowler from West Indies who had a lot of pace, meaning he was very skiddy. His run-up looks normal but he bowled with a lot of pace. So, when we saw him at the net, Mahi Bhai said, "Wow, he is good," recalled Ishant.

The wily pacer added, "Then he made his debut in Kolkata (versus West Indies in 2013). As far as I remember, he picked nine wickets and helped India win. So after that, we also became very good friends. When he was going through some personal turmoil, whatever had happened to him, I felt he needed a support from someone outside and say to him, 'What happened, happened. If you focus on cricket, may be things will become okay'. May be that is why Shami is a totally different bowler now."

Shami went through a turbulent time in 2018 after his relationship with his ex-wife Hasin Jahan went downhill. While the initial few months were tough for Shami as he failed the Yo-Yo Test as well, the pacer bounced back in style and there has been no looking back since then and has in total so far claimed 219, 159 and 24 wickets in 61 Tests, 87 ODIs and 23 T20Is, respectively.

He will next be seen in action in India's second Test of the four-match series versus Australia in New Delhi. The match kicks off on February 17.

MS Dhoni said, 'Wow, he is good': Ishant Sharma recalls former captain's words on star India bowler

Mohammed Shami remains an integral part of Team India across formats. At 32, the pacer has represented India in 61 Tests, 87 ODIs, and 23 T20Is, claiming 219, 159, and 24 scalps respectively. While he is spearheading India's pace attack in the ongoing home Test series versus Australia, there was a time in Shami's career when he was contemplating retirement. After going through a lot in his personal life in early 2018, Shami's fitness standards dropped and he was out of the Indian team. Just when he thought about retiring from the game, the then bowling coach Bharat Arun took him to then head coach Ravi Shastri and the former revealed how Shastri came to Shami's aid.

'I am very angry and I want to quit cricket'

Arun told Cricbuzz, "Just before the 2018 tour of England, we had a fitness test and Shami failed it. He lost his place in the Indian team. He called me and said he wanted to have a word with me. So I invited him to my room; he was going through personal turmoil. His fitness was affected, mentally he was gone. He came to me and said 'I am very angry and I want to quit cricket'. I immediately took Shami to meet Ravi Shastri. We both went up to his room and I said 'Ravi, Shami wants to say something'. Ravi asked what it was and Shami told him the same thing that 'I don't want to play cricket'. Both of us asked 'What will you do if not play cricket?' What else do you know? You know how to bowl when given the ball."

Arun added, "So Ravi said 'It's good that you're angry. This is the best thing that has happened to you because you have a ball in hand. Your fitness is poor. Whatever anger it is that you have, take it out on your body. We are going to send you to National Cricket Academy and want you to go there for 4 weeks and stay there. You will not go home, and only head to NCA. It suited Shami also because he had a problem going to Kolkata then so he spent 5 weeks at the NCA. I still remember the call he made and told me 'Sir, I have become like a stallion. Make me run as much as you want'. The 5 weeks that he spent there, he realised what working on fitness can do to him."

Not going home and working on his bowling and fitness worked wonders for Shami. He missed the one-off Test versus Afghanistan in June 2018 but returned to the Test squad for the away series in England, claiming the second-most wickets for India (17).

After that, there was no looking back for Shami. He was India's top performer in the away ODI series versus New Zealand in early 2019, took a hat-trick in the 2019 ODI World Cup, and remains an indispensable part of India's pace attack in red-ball format to date. I want to quit cricket: Ex-India bowling coach recalls Shami's words, reveals how Shastri motivated him

Mohammed Shami remains one of the main bowlers for India. He is currently spearheading the pace attack in the ongoing Australia home Tests with Jasprit Bumrah not yet fully fit. Shami has been an important asset for India over the years and has continued to deliver crunch spells from time to time. In 2018, he had gone through a turbulent time on the personal front after his estranged wife Hasin Jahan levelled serious charges against him.

Shami's ex-wife had lodged a police complaint and accused the pacer of domestic violence and even of match-fixing; claiming that the Indian pacer received money from a Pakistani woman. As soon as the news spread like wildfire, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) upheld Shami's contract. In addition, the Supreme Court-appointed Committee of Administrators (CoA) urged the Indian board to seriously look into the matter. Later, Shami was cleared of all charges.

Recalling the whole episode where he was investigated for match-fixing allegations on Shami, Ishant Sharma said on the latest episode of 'Rise of New India' on Cricbuzz, "I had a word with him and he did share of lot on the topic. Whatever had happened, the Anti-Corruption Unit (ACU) had approached us all, and they had asked us whether Shami could do a match-fixing or not. Just like policemen lodge a complaint...I was asked everything and all was written down. I had told them, 'I don't know his personal things but I'm 200 per cent sure he can't do that because I know him that well." When he heard I said those words, he realised that what I think of him and our bond became stronger."

Later, Dinesh Karthik -- India's veteran keeper-batter -- also spoke highly of Shami and said on the show, "If I have to use one word for Shami, it will be "torture Shami." Because in my whole career, he is the toughest bowler I have faced in the nets, he has got me out a couple of times as well in the match. But he has been nasty to play in the net. I thought I was the only one, so then I asked Kohli and Rohit, and they are all legends of the game, and they all said they hate playing Shami."

Shami has moved past all the allegations levied by his estranged wife and has been a key weapon in India's success since then. He claimed a hat-trick in 2019 ODI World Cup and was part of India's memorable journey in the inaugural WTC, where they lost the final to New Zealand. He was part of the 2021 and 2022 T20 World Cup campaigns; picking six wickets in as many games in the last edition at an economy of 7.15.

At present, Shami is part of Rohit Sharma-led India's Test squad for the ongoing Australia home series. He accounted for three scalps and scored an entertaining 37 in the first Test in Nagpur. The second Test kicks off on February 17 in New Delhi.

I'm 200 per cent sure he can't do: Ishant recalls being investigated for match-fixing allegations on Shami

Indian cricketer Mohammed Shami has been ordered by a Kolkata court to pay a monthly alimony of $1600 (Rs 1,30,000) to his ex-wife in a domestic violence case. The said amount will be divided into personal alimony of $613 (Rs 50,000) and child allowance of $981 (Rs 80,000) Shami’s estranged wife, Hasin Jahan had accused him of domestic violence.

On March 8, 2018, Jahan lodged a complaint against her husband and his elder brother Hasib Ahmad, levelling allegations of threat, infidelity and dowry demand. At the time, Jahan's counsel argued that Shami pay a monthly alimony of $12,300 (Rs 10 lakh) which will be divided into two parts - personal alimony ($ 8,600) and child allowance ($3,700). Read more: Glad he is charged at last, after so long: Mohammed Shami's wife on charge sheet against husband However, even after receiving the ruling in her favour, Jahan said she will appeal the case as $613 as alimony per month was not enough for her. “Rs 50,000 is minimal for me so I have to challenge this. It’s true that the verdict is in my favour but I will go to the high court as the stipulated money for my maintenance is very less considering the income of Shami,” Jahan was quoted as saying by News 18. Jahan added that she had spent a lot of money fighting legal battles over the years and thus she deserved the money to lead a 'quality' life. "Since I don’t have any financial support or earning, I only know how I arranged the money for so long. Thus, I deserve much more alimony for spending a quality life.” Her counsel argued that since Shami's annual income stood at $850,000 (Rs 7 crore) for the financial year 2020-21, according to income tax returns, the demand for $12,300 (Rs 10 lakh) as alimony was not unjustified. Mohammed Shami ordered to pay $1600 monthly alimony to ex-wife

Following India’s dominant eight-wicket win over New Zealand in the second ODI in Raipur, player-of-the-match Mohammed Shami was seen have a discussion with India’s newest pace sensation Umran Malik on Bcci.tv. During the match, it was Shami who provided India with early breakthroughs and returned with figures of 3-18 in six overs. Being a senior member of the pace attack, Shami shared some words of wisdom with Malik and even had a small piece of advice for him – claiming that if he gets there, Malik would all but rule the world.

In his short international career so far, Malik made headlines for his pace - that crossed 150 kmph on regular intervals but he lacked accuracy. Putting forward a suggestion regarding the same, Shami - who himself is regarded as one of India’s best seam bowler, asked Umran to work on his line and length and if he manages to get this right, Shami says Umran will rule the world.

"There's only one piece of advice I want to give. I don't think it's easy to play against the pace that you have. Just that we need to work a little on line and length. If we can get a command over it, we can rule the world. "You have a lot of power, future is bright. Best wishes for you, hope you do well," Shami told Umran during a chat on Bcci.tv.

Umran then asked Shami about his mantra of remaining so calm on the field, to which Shami said if a bowler remains calm and trust his skills, chances of right execution of plans are higher.

"But, when you keep your cool and keep trusting your skills, you have better opportunity to execute your plans. When you are doing well, then the importance of focusing is more. Keep your smile on, it's white-ball cricket, anybody can get hit. But keep believing in your skill and keep an eye on the pitch and bowl accordingly," Shami added.

As India has now won the ODI series against New Zealand, there is a likeliness that Umran might get roped into the XI for the final ODI in Indore in place of either Siraj or Shami.

Mohammed Shami advices young Umran Malik, says 'you do this..' and then you will rule the world

Indian seamer Mohammed Shami was adjudged the Man of the Match for his game-changing three-wicket spell against New Zealand in the second ODI in Raipur on Saturday. From dismissing Finn Allen on zero in the first over to grabbing a stunning return catch of Daryl Mitchell off his own bowling, Shami was all over the Kiwis in the 2nd ODI. Addressing the media after India’s eight-wicket win, Shami was asked about his role in the team, how is he managing his workload in this tight year of the World Cup and much more.

To begin with Shami talked about the conditions in Raipur saying they weren’t as good as their bowling and the scorecard made it look.

“The conditions were not as good as it seemed. They got out early, but conditions were not overtly bowler friendly. We dismissed them cheaply by bowling a testing length,” Shami said.

In absence of the ace bowler Jasprit Bumrah, Shami has led the attack and has done well in the shorter formats. Elaborating on what his role is or what has been asked out of him by the team management, Shami said, “My role hasn’t changed since I have come into the team. India continue their winning run at home as they thrashed New Zealand by eight wickets in the second ODI in Raipur on Saturday. Three wickets to Mohammed Shami and a fifty to captain Rohit Sharma made task easy for the host as they claimed yet another series win in 2023. While Rohit’s fellow opener and last match hero Shubman Gill also contributed with an unbeaten 40, Hardik Pandya and Washington Sundar shone with the ball picking up two wickets in the first innings as well.

Bowling first after winning the toss, India had New Zealand’s back on the wall right from the word go. Kiwis’ top five batters couldn’t cross the single-digit mark as they were reeling at 15 for five at one stage. Glenn Philips and Hyderabad match's hero Michael Bracewell then stitched a little partnership before Mitchell Santner chipped in with 27 off 39 balls to bring them back in the game. All these efforts however didn’t harm India as they kept picking wickets at regular intervals.

2nd ODI, Raipur: Rohit Sharma, Mohammed Shami guide India to series win against New Zealand

Indian captain Rohit Sharma was not in favour of running out Sri Lankan batter Dasun Shanaka on the non-striker's end after his premier bowler Mohammed Shami did just the same in the first ODI in Guwahati on Tuesday.

Indian captain Rohit Sharma was not in favour of running out Sri Lankan batter Dasun Shanaka on the non-striker's end after his premier bowler Mohammed Shami did just the same in the first ODI in Guwahati on Tuesday. With the match's outcome all but decided, Shami steamed in to bowl the 50th over. However, on the fourth delivery of the over, Shami broke his stride and ran out the Sri Lankan skipper on the non-striker's end after he had strayed out of the crease. Shami clipped the bails and burst into a semi-celebration as the umpire sent the call upstairs to the third umpire. In the meantime, skipper Sharma rushed to Shami, trying to understand the situation. After figuring out what his bowler had done, Sharma went to the umpire and told him the Indian side was withdrawing the appeal. Shami took his captain's argument in a healthy way and also signalled the umpire to void the Indian appeal. Notably, Shanaka was on 98, two runs away from a deserving century when Shami ran him out. In the post-match presentation ceremony, Sharma shone light on the incident and said he had no idea that Shami inflicted the non-striker's runout. He went for the appeal. He (Shanaka) was batting on 98 and the way he was batting was brilliant. So, you've got to give it to him. We didn't want to get him out like that. We wanted to get him out the way we thought we'll get him out. Hats off to him. He batted really well." Sharma reflected on the same and said the bowling upfront enabled India to avoid any late innings blues. "We started off really well with the bat. It was a great effort for all the batters. The platform was set to play freely for all the batters. We could have bowled slightly better. I don't want to be too critical about it. The dew was not that much but it was still difficult to bowl. We got wickets upfront with the ball which helped us with the momentum." India will now take on Sri Lanka in the second ODI match at the iconic Eden Gardens, Kolkata on Thursday. A titan in the domestic circuit of India, veteran left-arm pacer Jaydev Unadkat has been called as Mohammed Shami's replacement for the Test series against Bangladesh, starting next week.

A titan in the domestic circuit of India, veteran left-arm pacer Jaydev Unadkat has been called as Mohammed Shami's replacement for the Test series against Bangladesh, starting next week. While BCCI is yet to release an official statement, Unadkat's home association viz. Saurashtra Cricket Association has already been informed of the decision. The 31-year-old is currently in Rajkot and awaiting visa clearances after which he will travel to Chattogram to join the team. Unadkat replaces fast bowler Mohammed Shami who injured his shoulder ahead of the Bangladesh series. The pacer was instantly ruled out of the ODI series but a slight chance remained that he may be back in time for the Test series. However, Shami, who is currently undergoing rehab at BCCI's National Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru will take more time before returning to the field. Read more: BAN vs IND 2022: Injured Mohammed Shami out of Bangladesh ODIs, Umran Malik named replacement As for Unadkat, he will be walking into the Test setup 12 years after he made his debut against South Africa in December 2010. He ended with figures of none for 101 as India were bundled into a heap by the Proteas. At the time, the left-armer was fast-tracked into the Test setup as a teenager, only to not be recalled again. He had his chances in the limited-overs but the Test cap eluded him. For long, voices were raised within the Indian cricketing community to give Unadkat a due for his tireless performances in domestic matches. Unadkat may not have had the most stellar international cricket resume but for large swathes, he has dominated the domestic competition. Unadkat led Saurashtra to its maiden Ranji Trophy title in 2019-20. During the winning campaign, Unadkat picked a record 67 wickets which was the most by a bowler in a single season. The last three Ranji seasons have fetched a total of 115 wickets for Undakat in mere 21 matches. Last week, the speedster added another feather to his cap by leading Saurashtra to its first-ever Vijay Hazare trophy title. En route, Unadkat picked 19 wickets in 10 matches, thereby becoming the tournament's highest wicket-taker. (With inputs from agencies) WATCH WION LIVE HERE:

Jaydev Unadkat called in as replacement for Mohammed Shami ahead of Bangladesh Test series

Ace Indian pacer Mohammed Shami picked up a shoulder injury and didn’t travel with the Indian contingent to Bangladesh for the bilateral series, as per the BCCI release. Shami is now asked to report to the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru for his recovery. The fast bowler injured his shoulder ahead of the Bangladesh series, thus ruling him out of the ODIs, beginning Sunday, December 4th in Dhaka. While there is no confirmation as to by when will he be back on the board, Shami’s current situation puts his participation in the two Tests in limbo as well.

"Fast bowler Mohd. Shami sustained a shoulder injury during a training session in the lead-up to the ODI series against Bangladesh. He is currently under the supervision of the BCCI Medical Team at the NCA, Bengaluru, and will not be able to take part in the three-match series," the BCCI press release said.

'Just don't do it man' - Wasim Akram reacts to Md Shami-Shoaib Akhtar Twitter feud after T20 WC final

Indian pacer Mohammed Shami took a dig at former Pakistan pacer Shoaib Akhtar on social media after England won the T20 World Cup 2022 title on Sunday. England defeated Pakistan by five wickets in the final after successfully chasing down the target of 138 runs with an over to spare at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG).

Many had touted Pakistan to repeat their feat from the 1992 ODI World Cup where the Imran Khan-led side went on to beat England in the final to win their maiden World Cup trophy. However, their World Cup dream was shattered by England, who produced an emphatic all-round performance to clinch their second title.

Following Pakistan's loss in the final, Akhtar took to Twitter to share a heartbreak emoji to express his disappointment. Shami was quick to respond to Akhtar's tweet and said it was 'Karma'.

While the reason behind Shami's response is not known, some fans were quick to point out the former Pakistan pacer had questioned the senior Indian pacer's selection in the T20 World Cup squad. Shami was roped in as a replacement for injured Jasprit Bumrah by the Indian team ahead of the start of the tournament in Australia.

In the final at the MCG on Sunday, England won the toss and invited Pakistan to bat first. The openers got off too a cautious start but England soon started making inroads into the Pakistan batting line-up with Sam Curran and Adil Rashid running riot with the ball.

Curran picked up a three-wicket haul while conceding only 12 runs off his fur overs, while Rashid finished his four overs with excellent figures of 2/22. With the help of the duo's bowing heroics, England managed to restrict Pakistan to 137/8 in 20 overs.

Ben Stkes then scored a match-winning 52 off 49 deliveries to take his team home comfortably.

'It's karma': Mohammed Shami responds to Shoaib Akhtar's tweet after Pakistan lose T20 World Cup final

India lost to South Africa by five wickets in their third Super 12 clash at the Men's T20 World Cup on Sunday (October 30) at the Perth Stadium, Perth. Batting first, India managed only a paltry 133-9 riding on Suryakumar Yadav's 40-ball 68. In reply, SA were 40-3 in ten overs before fifties from Aiden Markram and David Miller lead their side to a win in 19.4 overs as they now occupy the top spot in their group. After the loss, many pointed fingers at Rohit Sharma for choosing R Ashwin to bowl the 18th over, with SA still in need of 25 off the final 18 balls. While Ashwin removed Tristan Stobbs, he conceded two sixes to bring down the equation in favour of the Proteas.

Many thought Hitman had irked with his tactics by not giving the ball to Md Shami or Bhuvneshwar Kumar in the 18th over (with both pacers left with an over each). At the post-match presentation, Rohit explained the thought process behind his move and said, "I've seen what happens with the spinners in the last over, so I wanted to go the other way. If I can finish Ash, I just wanted to make sure that the seamers are bowling the right overs. You have to use it at some point. With the new batter, it was the perfect time for him to bowl. Miller played some good shots as well."

During India's defence, Arshdeep Singh (2 for 25), Md Shami (1 for 13) and Hardik Pandya (1 for 29) were the most effective bowlers whereas Bhuvi also remained economical, raising questions with his swing. However, Ashwin went for plenty as Markram-Miller went after him to ease the pressure. The wily off-spinner ended with 4-0-43-1 but could've gotten the wicket of Markam, in the 12th over, had Virat Kohli held onto a simple catch at the deep.

After the defeat, India will now face Bangladesh (on November 02) and Zimbabwe (on November 06). They remain in contention for a spot in the semi-finals despite a defeat at the hands of a strong South African side.

T20 WC: Rohit Sharma explains thought process behind giving the ball to R Ashwin in 18th over vs SA

Rohit Sharma-led India have been on a roll in the T20 World Cup. Commencing their run in the Super 12 round, the one-time winners edged past Pakistan on the last ball to open their campaign in style, with a four-wicket win in pursuit of 160 at the MCG, Melbourne on October 23 (Sunday).

After that, India faced the Netherlands and romped past them by 56 runs, on Thursday (October 27), at the SCG, Sydney, to make it two wins in a row. Thus, India are currently at the top of Group B and have a strong chance of entering the semi-finals of the showpiece event in Australia. Despite their bright start, former Indian captain Kapil Dev pointed out the 'loopholes' in the Indian team.

"The bowling has gotten better. In batting, I felt India could have scored more runs but in the last 10 overs, made up for it by scoring over 100 runs. See, the grounds are big and hence, the spinners gain a little bit of advantage. I would still say that in patches we are still lacking in bowling," Kapil said on ABP News on Thursday.

"Against a team like Netherlands, you should have proper planning as to where to bowl in terms of line and length. The biggest thing is that in such matches, there should not be no-balls or wides because you are practicing and need to win the match as well. So overall, I would say, the bowling was good but still some loopholes were visible," he added.

'India would still want their captain Rohit Sharma...'

"Suryakumar Yadav has really grabbed his chances well in this team. To score runs so quickly, he should be praised more. India would still want their captain Rohit Sharma to be a little more compact, and want Rahul to score some runs.

"Virat Kohli should play anchor because he can accelerate, but if he gets the chance to play through the entire 20 overs, this team can chase down any total. In the last 1-2 years, he was the player we were struggling to find - who is going to bat for us at No.4? There were players but not the kind of contenders we have found in Suryakumar," the 1983 World Cup-winning skipper signed off.

'We're still lacking in...' - Kapil Dev mentions Team India's areas of concern despite bright start at T20 WC

After beating Pakistan in a humdinger, at the MCG, Melbourne, India will now face the Netherlands in their second Super 12 clash at the T20 World Cup. This will be the first clash between both sides in the format. In the ODI World Cup, India got the better of the Dutch line-up in both their meetings -- in the 2003 and 2011 editions. Coincidentally, they made it to the final on both the occasions.

India are coming into this game on the back of a stunning four-wicket win over Pakistan in their tournament opener, at the MCG. Playing their arch-rivals at the iconic stadium, on October 23 (Sunday), Rohit Sharma & Co. opted to bowl first and restricted them to 159 for 8.

In reply, India were reeling at 31 for 4 before Virat Kohli's stupendous 82 not out, off 53 balls, and Hardik Pandya's 37-ball 40 brought them back into the contest. With 16 needed off the last over, India triumphed on the final ball to register a famous win. Kohli was the architect of India's win with a match-winning knock that will go down as one of his finest in history.

Netherlands, on the other hand, entered the main draw of the competition after playing the qualifiers. They were up against Bangladesh in their first game and failed to chase 145, being all-out for 135 in 20 overs. After a missed opportunity versus the Bangla Tigers, the Scott Edwards-led side will hope to get inspired from Ireland, who beat England on Wednesday (October 26), and stun the one-time winners.

T20 World Cup 2022, India vs Netherlands, live cricket streaming: When and where to watch epic face-off?

Former India captain Kapil Dev recently explained why Mohammed Shami is not a better fast bowler than Pakistan's Shaheen Shah Afridi despite his last-over heroics against Australia in India's warm-up game ahead of the start of the T20 World Cup 2022 campaign.

Making his comeback after a long spell on the sidelines, Shami bowled a fantastic last over against Australia to defend 11 runs off it India's practice game against the hosts earlier this week. Shami went on to pick three wickets in the over as Australia were bundled out for 180 in the 187-run chase.

It was Shami's first over for India in Australia after he joined the team post his recovery from COVID-19 and the senior pacer managed to impress all with his heroics. However, Kapil believes Shami can't be compared with someone like Afridi on the basis of one over that he bowled against Australia in the warm-up game.

"You can’t judge anything by just one over," Kapil said during a debate in a joint broadcast of Samaa TV and ABP News.

"I wouldn’t even like to compare (Shami and Shaheen). Shami hasn’t played a lot of cricket of late. I would have perhaps compared Bumrah with Shaheen if he was there, but I can’t compare Shami and Afridi because there is a lot of difference.

Looking at the performances of the last two years, Shaheen has been very good. Whenever he has got an opportunity, he has made an impact," Kapil explained.

While Afridi has been Pakistan's pace spearhead in T20Is and has been exceptional with the new ball, Shami was not in the scheme of things for India a few months ago as far as T20Is were concerned. The senior pacer last played a T20I game for India during the T20 World Cup last year.

However, an injury to Jasprit Bumrah just days ahead of the start of the T20 World Cup 2022, paved way for Shami's comeback in India's T20I squad. He was roped in as Bumrah's replacement in India's T20 World Cup squad and will be hoping to justify his selection with good performances in the tournament.

India are currently locking horns with Pakistan in their T20 World Cup opener at the Melbourne Cricket Ground where both Shami and Afridi are in action for their respective teams.

Can't compare Mohammed Shami to Shaheen Afridi on the basis of one over, says legendary Kapil Dev

Mohammed Shami bowled only the last over during India's narrow six-run win over Australia in their warm-up encounter ahead, in Brisbane on Monday (October 17), of the main draw of the T20 World Cup. Shami, who was drafted into the Indian team as a replacement for injured Jasprit Bumrah, didn't field for the first 19 overs, with Aussies chasing a competitive 187 set by Rohit Sharma & Co., and came onto bowl the last six balls, returning with 1-0-4-3.

Shami looks set to be part of India's T20 WC opening fixture, where they will play Pakistan at the iconic MCG, Melbourne on October 23. Before that, the experienced pacer will like to bowl his full qouta of overs in India's remaining warm-up tie, where they face New Zealand on Wednesday (October 19). Filling in for Bumrah, Shami has a herculean task ahead -- having last played a T20I during the last year's World Cup in the UAE -- but looks set for the challenge.

Ahead of the Super 12 round of the T20 WC, former Indian all-rounder Suresh Raina made a bold claim. He feels Shami isn't a perfect replacement for Bumrah because players like him are rare.

"I would not call him a perfect replacement because you cannot replace Jasprit Bumrah or Ravindra Jadeja. They have played consistently for India and they have given performances," Raina told NDTV.

Raina, however, was quick to point out that Shami was the best choice among the other contenders to take a vacant spot in the Indian squad following Bumrah's back injury. "But the best option you had, you have selected him. Shami has given good performances, he has been in good form. "But the best option you had, you have selected him. Shami has given good performances, he has been in good form. I would not call Mohammed Shami a perfect replacement for Jasprit Bumrah, says Suresh Raina

Early this month, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced that Jasprit Bumrah has officially been ruled out of the T20 World Cup, in Australia. Bumrah, who had missed the Asia Cup 2022 edition due to back issues, was part of the India-Australia home T20Is, in September, before his back concerns re-emerged.

As a result, the 28-year-old Bumrah was ruled out of the ICC event due to a stress back fracture. The board took a lot of time before finally announcing Mohammed Shami, who last played a T20I during the 2021 T20 World Cup in the UAE, as his replacement. Deepak Chahar was also a strong contender before back injury ruled him out as well. On the other hand, Mohammed Siraj -- who finished with five wickets in the recently-held three ODIs versus South Africa at home -- was also a strong candidate to replace Bumrah but BCCI selectors went ahead with the experienced Shami.

Recently, Master Blaster Sachin Tendulkar lauded Shami and feels he is an ideal replacement for Bumrah. “Bumrah not being there is a big loss and we obviously needed a strike bowler. An out-and-out genuine fast bowler, who could attack batters and get wickets. Shami has proven that and he seems a good replacement,” Tendulkar told PTI in an exclusive interview.

Shami went on to pick three wickets in the final over while defending 11 runs to secure a thrilling victory for the Men in Blue.

Batting first, India rode on the fifties from KL Rahul and Suryakumar Yadav to post 186 runs on the board before the bowlers gave their all to defend the target. Skipper Aaron Finch's 54-ball 76 went in vain as Australia fell short towards the end after Shami's last-over heroics.

Shami was nowhere to be seen before the final over of the Australia innings and was not part of India's XI initially However, Rohit brought him to bowl the final over throwing him a huge challenge on his return to competitive cricket after a long gap. The Indian skipper said it was always the plan to bowl Shami in the final over while lauding him for executing the plan well.

"Honestly, he is coming back after a long time. So we just wanted to give him an over. This was always the plan from the beginning," Rohit said on Star Sports.

"He comes and bowls at the death. We know how lethal he can be with the new ball. We just wanted to give him a little bit of a challenge, coming and bowling that death over and we saw what it was," he added.

While Shami impressed on his return despite getting to bowl just one over in the warm-up game, other Indian bowlers were taken to the cleaners as Australia came close to overhauling the target. Bhuvneshwar Kumar was the pick of the bowlers with figures of 2/20 in his three overs but barring him, all others conceded runs heavily.

Rohit said there is still room for improvement for the Indian bowlers, who will have to adapt to the Australian conditions and vary their line and length accordingly to ensure they can be more effective when India begin their T20 World Cup 2022 campaign against Pakistan on October 23.

"There is definitely room for improvement. I am sure we are on it but I want to see more consistency in terms of where you want to pitch the ball. You know, when you play back home and when you play in Australian conditions, you have to change your tactics, change your lengths a little bit. Sometimes, keeping it simple and hitting the ball hard on the deck will be a good option.

T20 WC: BCCI names Mohammed Shami as Jasprit Bumrah's replacement, Siraj-Shardul added in reserves

Team India dealt with a huge blow, early this month, with Jasprit Bumrah being officially ruled out of the T20 World Cup due to a back stress fracture. Bumrah was out of the Asia Cup due to back issues as well. While Mohammed Shami or Deepak Chahar were being considered as strong contenders to replace Bumrah at the forthcoming mega event, Chahar has also suffered a back injury, ruling him out of the showpiece event in Australia, which gets underway on October 16.

With Bumrah and Chahar both ruled out, BCCI is sending Md Shami, Mohammed Siraj and fast-bowling all-rounder Shardul Thakur to Australia, where one of the trio will join the main squad as Bumrah's replacement. Ahead of India's tournament opener, former India head coach Ravi Shastri raised concerns about India's pace battery breaking down regularly.

"It was the most frustrating thing for me as (India coach), when you lose key players to injuries. We toured England and New Zealand twice. On all those tours, Bhuvneshwar Kumar was injured, where he'd have got a bagful of wickets with his skills. Now, you see Chahar has hardly played, and he's injured. I was looking at the stats, Bumrah has played 5 matches since the last T20 World Cup and he's injured. So, you've got to look at it very seriously, as to why it is happening," Shastri told senior journalist Ayaz Memon at a 'Meet-the-media programme' at Mumbai Press Club on Wednesday (October 12).

After Bumrah, Chahar's injury also comes as a huge blow to Rohit Sharma & Co. Given he can also bat lower down the order, his absence will also hurt India's chances. "Deepak will take some time to get fit. His back issue has flared up again. His ankle is fine and there wasn't any problem there. Ravi Shastri raises concerns on Indian pace battery's regular injury woes ahead of T20 World Cup

Rohit Sharma-led Indian cricket team is currently in Australia preparing for the upcoming T20 World Cup 2022 without the 15th member of their official squad. The selectors are yet to name a replacement for injured fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah, who was ruled out of the tournament due to a back injury.

In his absence, the experienced Mohammed Shami is being touted to take over Bumrah's spot in the team. However, the likes of Mohammed Siraj and Shardul Thakur among others remain in contention. Deepak Chahar was also a contender to replace Bumrah but the pacer has been reportedly ruled out of the T20 World Cup due to a bask issue.

Chahar was part of India's reserves along with Shami and could have been promoted to the main team as Bumrah's replacement. However, he won't travel to Australia now. BCCI have instead sent Shami, Siraj and Shardul as reinforcements for the Indian team while not confirming who out of the three will be Bumrah's official replacement in the main squad.

Recently, the legendary Sunil Gavaskar picked the player who he feels can be an ideal replacement for injured Bumrah in India's squad for the T20 World Cup 2022. Keeping in mind that Shami has not played a T20I for India since the T20 World Cup last year and is returning after recovering from COVID-19 recently, Gavaskar said he would go with Siraj.

“I'd go for Siraj because he has been bowling well, Shami has not played for a while. And to hit your steps straight away in a World Cup, yes there are a couple of warm-up matches. As of now, nobody has been selected as the 15th player. I don't know...has he gone with the team to Australia? He hasn't gone. So he has played no cricket. And that's a concern," Gavaskar said on Star Sports.

"No doubting his quality. Just the fact that he (Shami) has not played any cricket. It's never easy to come back after Covid. Your stamina can be a little bit of suspect - I know it's a four-over game in T20I cricket. But look at the way Siraj has been bowling. He's bowling brilliantly," he added.

Siraj was impressive with the ball in the recently-concluded three-match ODI series against South Africa at home where he finished as the second-highest wicket-taker for India wicket five wickets. While Shami's experience and skills make him the frontrunner to replace Bumrah, Siraj can give the senior pacer a run for his money on his current form.

It remains to be seen who will be the selectors' choice for Bumrah's spot in the squad. October 15 is the deadline for all teams to finalise their squads and India will soon have to officially confirm Bumrah's replacement. The Men in Blue will open their T20 World Cup 2022 campaign against Pakistan on October 23.

Mohammed Shami or Mohammed Siraj? Sunil Gavaskar picks Jasprit Bumrah's replacement for T20 World Cup

Deepak Chahar has been ruled out of the upcoming T20 World Cup 2022 due to a back injury. The pacer, who was part of India's stand-by list for the World Cup, was in contention to make it to the main squad after Jasprit Bumrah was sidelined from the tournament due to an injury. However, Chahar will not travel to Australia for the showpiece event.

In his absence, BCCI is all set to send three pacers as reinforcements for the Indian squad. Mohammed Shami, Mohammed Siraj and Shardul Thakur will travel to Australia and join the rest of the Indian contingent down under. Shami was originally part of India's stand-by list while Siraj and Shardul are the new inclusions.

Shami remains the frontrunner to take Bumrah's spot in the main 15-man squad now that Chahar is no more in the fray. However, he faces serious competition from Siraj, who impressed in the recently-concluded ODI series against South Africa at home. While one of them will make it to the main squad, the other two will be part of the reserves.

The Indan selectors do not have much time to name the official replacement for Bumrah as October 15 is the deadline to announce the final changes in the squad. The T20 World Cup s set to get underway on October 16 with India opening their campaign against arch-rivals Pakistan on October 23.

The Indian squad is already in Perth, Australia where they have been fine-tuning their preparations ahead of the start of the T20 World Cup. India recently defeated Western Australia XI in a warm-up match and are scheduled to play one more practice match against the same team in Perth before taking on New Zealand and Australia in two more warm-up matches.

In the absence of Bumrah, expectations will be high from Shami if he is roped into the squad as the official replacement for the injured pacer. Shami has the experience and the skills to be the strike bowler for the Men in Blue in the tournament, however, he has not played a T20I for India since the T20 World Cup last year which remains a huge concern for the team.

Shardul Thakur, Md. Shami and Md. Siraj to leave for Australia; Deepak Chahar out of T20 World Cup - Report

Mohammed Shami is reportedly the frontrunner to replace Jasprit Bumrah in India's squad for the upcoming T20 World Cup 2022, however, BCCI is yet to name an official replacement for the injured pacer. Bumrah was ruled out of the T20 World Cup earlier this week as the Indian squad travelled to Australia without its 15th member.

Shami is the favourite to replace Bumrah considering his experience and skills, however, former India cricketer Sanjay Manjrekar believes Mohammed Siraj is 'seriously pushing' the senior pacer for the spot after his heroics in the second ODI against South Africa on Sunday.

Shami, who had recently recovered from COVID-19, is currently at the NCA where he has to prove his fitness before he can be considered for selection in the Indian squad for the T20 World Cup 2022. Siraj, on the other hand, is in action for Shikhar Dhawan-led India in their ongoing ODI series against South Africa at home.

Siraj bowled well in the second ODI against the visitors in Ranchi as he finished with figures of 3/38. The right-arm pacer bowled four overs in the death and impressed in what could be an audition for a spot in India's T20 World Cup side. Manjrekar was left impressed with the pacer's performance and took to Twitter to share his verdict.

If he can continue his fine form in the third and final ODI against South Africa next week, the Indian selectors will face major selection headache when picking Bumrah's replacement between him and Shami. Shami has not played a T20I game for India for over a year as he last featured in the shortest format for the Men in Blue in the T20 World Cup last year.

However, he remains ahead in the pecking order considering his overall experience. The deadline to name a replacement is October 15 and it remans to be seen who will make the cut as Bumrah's replacement in India's squad.

'Siraj seriously pushing Shami': Sanjay Manjrekar on Jasprit Bumrah's spot in India's T20 World Cup squad

India are yet to name an official replacement for marquee pacer Jasprit Bumrah who has been ruled out of the T20 World Cup 2022 due to a back injury. Bumrah, who recently made his comeback after undergoing recovery from a back issue, was ruled out of the T20 World Cup after suffering a back stress fracture last month.

One of the best fast bowlers in the world at present, Bumrah's skills and experience made him a valuable asset for the Indian team and there is no like-to-like replacement for the premier pacer considering the qualities he brought. However, India faces the herculean task of replacing the right-arm pacer with someone who can negate his absence if not bring the same skillset to the table.

While Mohammed Shami is reportedly the favourite to take Bumrah's spot in India's T20 World Cup 2022 squad, the likes of Deepak Chahar and Mohammed Siraj also remain in contention. Recently, former India wicket-keeper Parthiv Patel shared his views on who should be Bumrah's replacement for the World Cup starting later this month.

Parthiv picked Shami as an ideal replacement for Bumrah considering his experience. However, Shami has not played for India in a T20I game since the T20 World Cup last year. He was set to make his comeback in the T20I series against Australia last month but had to miss out after testing positive for COVID-19.

Shami is currently undergoing mandatory fitness tests at the NCA post recovering from COVID-19 before he can be considered for selection in the World Cup squad.

"There are a lot of options for India to choose from but unfortunately, the finest option (Mohammed Shami) that exists isn't playing at the moment as he has got Covid," Parthiv said in a chat on Cricbuzz.

"Most certainly I really feel on this squad, Mohammad Shami will replace Jasprit Bumrah. Hopefully, as a result of we've got 20 days to go and he has virtually recovered from Covid-19. Before than the World Cup, India will play two practice matches in Perth, then vs Australia, and against New Zealand. So he'll get match-time. Based on my opinion, he deserves a spot. I really feel he's the frontrunner," he said.

Md. Shami or Deepak Chahar? Former India keeper picks Jasprit Bumrah's replacement for T20 WC 2022

Rohit Sharma-led Team India have already touched down in Australia ahead of the T20 World Cup 2022 that gets underway later this month. India have travelled to the country with only 14 players as Jasprit Bumrah's replacement is yet to be officially confirmed by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).

Bumrah has been ruled out of the T20 World Cup 2022 due to a back injury. The fast bowler's absence from the tournament is a huge blow to the team's chances and it will be a herculean task to find an ideal replacement for him. The BCCI had the option to quickly announce Bumrah's replacement to ensure the player travelled to Australia with the rest of the team, however, the selectors wanted to take their time.

As per a report in PTI, the selectors have now zeroed in on the experienced Mohammed Shami as an ideal replacement for Bumrah in the T20 World Cup squad. Shami will travel to Australia next week to link up with the rest of his teammates.

Shami had earlier been named in the reserves when India announced their squad for the T20 World Cup despite having not played a single T20I for India since the T20 World Cup last year. He was set to feature in the T20I series against Australia and South Africa at home after being recalled to the T20I squad.

However, Shami ended up missing both series due to COVID-19. He has resumed bowling in the nets but is currently at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) to undergo mandatory fitness tests before he can travel to Australia for the T20 World Cup.

"Mohammed Shami, if fit, was always going to be the first replacement as that's the closest Indian team can get in terms of sheer quality. He will be joining some time next week," a source was quoted as saying by PTI.

Despite not being in the scheme of things for India in T20Is for a while now, Shami is believed to be the selectors' favourite when it comes to a like-to-like replacement for Bumrah as a strike bowler. He might not have done exceedingly well for India in T20Is but Shami has a great record in the IPL with 99 wickets to his name in 93 matches.

He was instrumental with the ball in helping Gujarat Titans script history by winning their maiden IPL title in their debut campaign last season. Shami picked up 20 wickets for the Titans in 16 matches and was one of their best bowlers.

Bumrah has been ruled out of the T20 World Cup 2022 due to a back injury. The fast bowler's absence from the tournament is a huge blow to the team's chances and it will be a herculean task to find an ideal replacement for him. Mohammed Shami to replace Jasprit Bumrah in India's T20 WC squad, to travel to Australia next week - Report

BCCI, on Monday (October 03), officially ruled out Jasprit Bumrah from the forthcoming T20 World Cup, in Australia from October-November. Bumrah will miss the upcoming showpiece event Down Under due to a back stress fracture. It is to be noted that the 28-year-old pacer had earlier also missed the Asia Cup 2022 edition, due to back issues, but his absence in the ICC event will surely dent India's chances of lifting the title for the second time (after 2007).

Ever since the news broke out of Bumrah's ouster, it remains to be seen who will replace him in the main squad. Among the contenders, Mohammed Shami, Deepak Chahar and Mohammed Siraj remain the top three choices for India, to replace Bumrah. Amid all this, former South African speedster Dale Steyn reacted to Bumrah's omission and named his choice on who should fill in for the premier bowler.

“I'm sad and I feel for him (Bumrah). As a replacement, I would look at someone who can qualify with similar experience. Mohammed Shami is probably the guy I would go with. He's been around the world, he can swing the ball and he can bowl quickly when he wants to,” Steyn told Hindustan Times.

Steyn further went on to say that he has Shami's name written down as the top of the pile of Bumrah's replacements. "You've got a bunch of other guys as well. You've got Deepak who has got swing, Siraj who has got skills, and Avesh has some good pace. But I think the top of the pile woud be Shami, I've got him written down here. If he's fully fit, he's somebody the opposition do fear. But India would be missing Bumrah for sure," he added.
