Mohammed Shami's T20I comeback will be delayed as the veteran pace bowler has tested positive for COVID-19 and will be out of the Australia series starting in Mohali from September 20.

Veteran pacer Umesh Yadav, who played the last of his seven T20Is in 2019 against Australia is back in the scheme of things, having recovered from a quadriceps injury.

"Yes, Shami has tested COVID-19 positive. But there is nothing to worry as the symptoms are mild. But he will have to remain in isolation and will be able to rejoin the squad once he tests negative. It is unfortunate but that is how life is," a senior BCCI source told PTI on conditions of anonymity.

Asked how long he thinks Shami will take to recover, the source seemed hopeful that he would be fit for the next series against Australia.

"We are expecting Shami to be fit for the next series against South Africa. There is 10 days before that series starts. So we are more than hopeful you can say," he said.

But 35-year-old Umesh's comeback is nothing short of a fairytale in this format as his county stint with MIddlesex was cut short by a quadriceps injury.

He had a terrific first leg of t 2022 IPL for KKR when he swung the ball at a great pace.

"Someone who hasn’t played for 10 months in T20Is cannot be selected directly for the T20 World Cup. There was a process that was followed. Harshal Patel made the most during his absence. Talking about the Australia series, India will host the defending champions in three T20Is starting from September 20. The matches will be held on September 20 (Mohali), September 23 (Nagpur) and September 25 (Hyderabad). For this series, pacer Arshdeep Singh -- who was heavily trolled for his dropped catch in the India-Pakistan Super 4 clash at the Asia Cup -- has been rested.&nbsp;

On the other hand, Hardik Pandya and Bhuvneshwar Kumar have been rested for the SA T20Is, which will get underway on September 28. The remaining two T20Is will be held on October 02 (Guwahati) and October 04 (Indore). After this, a Shikhar Dhawan-led Indian team is likely to face the Proteas in a three-match ODI series, from October 06, with all the T20 WC-bound players set to be rested (as per reports).&nbsp;

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on Monday (September 12) announced India's 15-man squad for the T20 World Cup 2022. There are no major surprises in the squad as fast bowlers Jasprit Bumrah and Harshal Patel have returned after recovering well from their respective injuries.

The BCCI selection committee met on Monday afternoon to pick the squad after India's disappointing campaign in the recently-concluded Asia Cup 2022 where the team failed to make it to the final. India's bowling woes were left exposed in the tournament and the pace attack has been strengthened for the World Cup with the return of Bumrah and Harshal.

Both the pacers had missed the bus for Asia Cup after suffering injuries. They have now fully recovered and have been undergoing training at the National Cricket&nbsp; Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru. Bumrah and Harshal will spearhead India's pace battery alongside the experienced Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Arshdeep Singh.

Senior pacer Mohammed Shami was believed to be in contention to make a comeback in the T20 squad after a dismal show from Indian pacers in the Asia Cup. However, he has been selected as one of the standby players alongside Deepak Chahar and young spinner Ravi Bishnoi, who was part of India's Asia Cup squad.

In the absence of star all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja, who failed to make the cut after undergoing knee surgery recently, Axar Patel has been roped in as a like-to-like replacement. Hardik Pandya remains India's first-choice all-rounder while Deepak Hooda will also be expected to chip in with the ball when required.

There are no major changes in the batting line-up from the squad that was picked for the Asia Cup. Pathan feels Shami is the best option India have if they want to improve their prospects with the new ball as he has the form and the experience to come and deliver straightaway.

Now there is an opportunity here whether a bowler can come in the World Cup race who can help the Indian team. Indian superstar Virat Kohli was spotted arguing with the on-field umpire after he stopped Mohammed Shami too late in his bowling stride during England's first innings on Day 2 of the ongoing rescheduled fifth Test between the two sides at Edgbaston in Birmingham. Despite having given up Test captaincy earlier this year, Kohli remains a leader in the squad and is often seen encouraging the players on the field.

The incident happened during the fourth over of England's first innings on Day 2 of the Test match when Indian pacer Mohammed Shami was bowling against Zak Crawley. Shami came steaming in for the first delivery of the over against Crawley but was stopped by on-field umpire Aleem Dar, who stuck his hand out signalling the bowler to stop.

However, the signal from the umpire came too late as Shami had already reached the crease by then and the ball was delivered to Crawley, who walked away from the stumps after noticing the umpire's signal. Kohli was not at all happy with the umpire's decision to stop Shami so late in his stride and was seen arguing with Dar.

Nehra believes Shami is not in the scheme of things for India ahead of the T20 World Cup 2022 which is just four months away. The next edition of the showpiece event will be played in Australia this year.

Shami was part of the Indian squad which had a disappointing campaign in the T20 World Cup 2021 in UAE last year. He featured in India's clash against Namibia at the World Cup and has since not managed to play a single T20I for the Men in Blue. He is not part of India's squad in the ongoing T20I series against South Africa at home.

While many believe he has a chance to make his comeback in the T20I side ahead of the World Cup, Nehra feels Shami won't make the cut. However, the former India pacer backed Shami to be part of India's squad for the 2023 ODI World Cup which will be played at home next year.

"Seems like he doesn't feature in the current scheme of things for the T20 World Cup. But we all know about his abilities. Even if he doesn't play in this year's T20 World Cup, India will definitely consider him for the 2023 World Cup at home. We don't have many ODIs this year and Shami is on a break at the moment after the IPL. India can play him in England for the 50-over games after the Test match," Nehra said on Cricbuzz.

Shami, who has been rested from the ongoing series against South Africa at home, will return to action when India take on England in the final sixth Test in July. He is expected to spearhead India's pace attack along with Jasprit Bumrah in the one-off Test match. Nehra wants India to play Shami in the white-ball matches as well after the Test match in order to have a full-strength bowling attack.

"We don't have many ODIs this year and Shami is on a break at the moment after IPL. India can play him in England for the 50-over games after the Test match. You will play three ODI games against a top-quality white-ball team like England, and you would definitely love to beat them. And for that, you need your best bowlers. I would definitely take Shami in that bracket," said Nehra.

The 22-year-old has often been compared with former Pakistan pacer Waqar Younis with many believing his action is quite similar to that of the Pakistan pace legend. However, Umran recently revealed he has never followed Waqar and that his pace-bowling idols are three Indian pacers.

“I have not followed Waqar Younis. I have a natural action. My idols include (Jasprit) Bumrah, (Mohammed) Shami and Bhuvneshwar (Kumar) bhai. I used to follow them when I was playing while coming through the ranks,” Umran said during Indian Express Idea Exchange.

Shami, who was part of India's playing XI for the high-profile clash, had an average outing in the game. The senior fast bowler was trolled brutally on social media and was abused by many. Several former and current Indian cricketers had&nbsp;rallied behind Shami and extended support to&nbsp;him.

Recalling the abuse faced on social media, Shami said the trolls who disrespect a player based on his religion can never be true fans of the game or real Indians. The fast bowler also asserted that he never lets comments from such people affect himself or his game.

“There is no cure for this kind of thinking. Those who troll (on religion) are not real fans, nor are they real Indians. If you consider a player as a hero and then behave this way, you are not being an Indian supporter. And I feel one should not get hurt by comments made by such people," Shami was quoted as saying by Indian Express.

“There was just one thing going on in my mind. If I consider someone as my role model, I will never speak ill about that person. And in case someone is saying something hurtful to me, he can’t be my fan or a fan of the Indian team. So actually, I don’t mind what he says,” he added.

It was not the first time that an Indian athlete was subjected to vile abuse on social media for his performance on the field. However, Shami said the players know what they are and their duty is to play for the country and they do not need to prove anything to anyone.

“We know what we are, we don’t need to say what India means to us because we represent the country and we fight for our country. So we don’t need to prove anything to anyone by saying or reacting to such trolls," Shami said.

Shikhar Dhawan was the third most expensive pick as the senior India batter was also roped in by Punjab Kings, who headed into the mega auction with the largest purse among all ten teams. Punjab Kings spent a whopping Rs 8.25 crore (INR 82.5 million) to rope in Dhawan, who has been a consistent run-getter in the IPL over the years.
