India were one of the overwhelming favourites heading into the T20 World Cup 2021. Expectations were high from Virat Kohli's men, who had played some amazing cricket in the build-up to the World Cup and dominated across formats. However, what unfolded in the UAE was hard to believe for many as India's campaign came crashing down in a matter of just two games.

Two games was all it took as the Men in Blue found themselves on the verge of an early exit from the competition. A lot was said about India's unbeaten record against Pakistan in World Cups with not many writing off the Babar Azam-led side even before they took the field against their arch-rivals in the opener in Dubai on October 24.

Pakistan produced a brilliant all-round performance to thoroughly outclass India and win the game by ten wickets to get off to a perfect start in the tournament. India's defeat not only marked an end to their flawless streak in World Cup matches against Pakistan but did enough damage to the team's confidence as they looked out of sorts in the next game against New Zealand.

In what was a painful repeat of the thrashing at the hands of Pakistan, New Zealand crushed India by eight wickets to further dent their hopes of qualifying for the semi-finals. Just when it looked like Kohli's team was set for an early exit from the tournament, India bounced back emphatically to thrash Afghanistan and Scotland in their next two games and keep their hopes alive.

However, their fate was no more in their hands with the Kohli-led side in desperate need of a favour from Afghanistan to finish above them and New Zealand in terms of net run rate. India needed Afghanistan to beat New Zealand to help them salvage their campaign, however, the Mohammad Nabi-led side suffered an 8-wicket defeat in their final Super 12 clash on Sunday to confirm India's exit from the tournament.

Not many Indian players have so far managed to impress in the ongoing T20 World Cup but there have been a few who have risen after a disappointing start and have helped the team stage a fightback after what was a disastrous start. Here we take a look at the hits and flops from Team India's campaign so far in the T20 World Cup 2021 with a game to spare against Namibia.

<h2>Hits</h2>

1) KL Rahul

Opening batter KL Rahul has been one of the few sparks in the Indian team from what has been an abysmal campaign so far in the T20 World Cup. Rahul faltered in the first two matches against Pakistan and New Zealand with 21 runs combined, before redeeming himself with two brilliant knocks in the next two games.

The stylish right-hander roared back to form with a classy 69 off 48 balls against Afghanistan where he slammed two sixes and six fours to help India register a big win by 66 runs. He continued his stunning form against Scotland as he took the Scottish bowlers to the cleaners to race away to a fifty off just 18 balls, helping India chase down 89 runs in just 39 balls.

Rahul smashed six fours and three sixes in his fiery cameo as India absolutely mauled Scotland. Rahul is India's highest run-getter so far in the tournament with 140 runs from 4 matches.

2) Jasprit Bumrah&nbsp;

After a disappointing outing against Pakistan where all Indian bowlers went wicket-less, Bumrah was the first Indian to pick up a wicket in the tournament. He dismissed Martin Guptill in the game against New Zealand to open India's wicket account in the tournament and followed it up with the dismissal of Daryl Mitchell in the same game.

Bumrah bowled at an economy of 4.80 and was India's best bowler against the Kiwis but his efforts were not enough to push India over the line.

He finished with excellent figures of 1/25 in his 4 overs against Afghanistan before wreaking havoc against Scotland. Bumrah bowled at an economy of just 2.70 in his two overs against Scotland, conceding 10 runs to return with two wickets. Fair to say, Bumrah has been one of the most consistent bowlers for the Men in Blue so far and has 5 wickets to his name in four matches.

3) Mohammed Shami&nbsp;

Trolled viciously after an off day against Pakistan, Mohammed Shami has since scripted a remarkable turnaround in the tournament. Shami was targeted over his faith and was on the receiving end of horrific abuse on social media after his poor outing against Babar Azam's men. He once again went wicket-less against New Zealand as questions were raised over his place in the team.

Shami's redemption came against Afghanistan where he picked up the important wickets of Mohammad Shehzad and Mohammad Nabi to derail their batting line-up and finish with sublime figures of 3/32 in his four overs. That was just the start as Shami once again wreaked havoc against Scotland.

The senior pacer responded to his critics in style as he picked up another three-wicket haul against Scotland while conceding only 15 runs from his 3 overs. Shami has been India's highest wicket-taker so far in the tournament with six wickets from four matches.

<h2>Flops</h2>

1) Bhuvneshwar Kumar

One of the senior-most members of the Indian squad in the ongoing T20 World Cup 2021, Buvneshwar has been around for several years now. He was once undroppable in T20s for India but the right-arm speedster has been struggling with his form ever since his return from injury last year.

Bhuvneshwar played in India's ten-wicket loss against Pakistan in the opener and was taken to the cleaners by Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan to concede 25 runs in his three overs without taking a wicket. He was dropped for Shardul Thakur in the next game against New Zealand before sitting out in the next two games as well.&nbsp;

There were a lot of expectations from Bhuvneshwar as one of India's prominent bowlers in the T20 World Cup but he has had a disappointing campaign.

2) Hardik Pandya

The star all-rounder didn't bowl at all in the second leg of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2021 for Mumbai Indians but was picked purely as a batter in the World Cup squad despite question marks over his place in the side. While he didn't bowl in the first game against Pakistan, Hardik clearly struggled with the bat.

He also picked up a shoulder injury during the game and was later taken for scans leading to questions over his fitness. Hardik was expected to be one of the vital cogs of India's wheel in the T20 World Cup and be a game-changer for the Kohli-led side, however, he has failed to deliver with both the bat and the ball in the tournament.

Though he has resumed bowling from the New Zealand game, Hardik is yet to make a significant contribution with the ball and his 13-ball 35 against Afghanistan has been his only major contribution with the bat so far in this year's T20 World Cup.

3) Varun Chakaravarthy

Touted as a rising mystery spinner, Varun Chakaravarthy has been a huge letdown for Team India at the T20 World Cup so far. He was picked over the likes of Yuzvendra Chahal and Kuldeep Yadav in the T20 World Cup squad but has failed to live up to the expectations in what has been a woeful campaign for him so far.

After going wicket-less in the first two games against Pakistan and New Zealand, Chakaravarthy was rightfully dropped from the playing XI against Afghanistan before making a comeback in the Scotland encounter. He once again failed to pick up a wicket against Scotland and is yet to open his account despite having bowled 11 overs in the tournament so far.

Hits and flops from India's T20 World Cup 2021 campaign

Former India cricketer Sanjay Manjrekar believes it is time for the Indian team to re-assess their T20 setup and leave out players who are better suited for the other formats of the game. India have had a poor start to their campaign in the ongoing T20 World Cup 2021 and are currently on the verge of missing out on a spot in the playoffs after two losses and one win in their first three Super 12 matches.

India's woeful start has led to several questions being raised about the selection of some of the members of the current T20 World Cup squad. Manjrekar cited the example of fast bowler Mohammed Shami and said while he is suited for Test cricket, India clearly have better bowlers than him when it comes to the shortest format of the game.

Indian pacers have struggled to deliver so far in the ongoing T20 World Cup 2021. Barring Jasprit Bumrah, none of the speedsters have managed to make an impact so far. Shami, who went wicket-less in the first two games against Pakistan and New Zealand, returned to form as he picked up three wickets against Afghanistan in their last encounter.

"I think the time has come now for India to look at their T20 team and look at certain players and maybe assess whether these guys are better suited to playing some other format... Maybe there are some players in this T20 team who will add greater value or the best value that they can possibly add in one format and not be as good in the others... I am thinking about Mohammed Shami," Manjrekar said in a preview video for&nbsp;Dafa News,&nbsp;ahead of India's game against Scotland in the T20 World Cup 2021 on Friday (November 05).

"I think we have seen enough of Mohammed Shami to know that his greatest quality and where he's a superb asset for the team is Test match cricket. The last time I looked, his economy in T20 cricket was 9. I know he bowled well against Afghanistan but India clearly has bowlers who are slightly better than Mohammed Shami in T20 cricket," he added.

Shami, who has been with the Indian team for quite a while now, has so far managed to play only 15 T20Is and has 15 wickets to his name at an average of over 34 and an economy rate of 9.79. Manjrekasr said the selectors should avoid making the mistake of selecting a player in a particular format based on his reputation in some other format.

"One must learn, as selectors especially, to disregard the reputation a man has earned in another format while assessing his place in a side for one format. India makes that mistake with Ravichandran Ashwin and to an extent Mohammed Shami," said the former India batter.

India will be looking to continue their winning run against Scotland on Friday after registering a big win by 66 runs in their last game against Afghanistan to open their win account in the tournament.&nbsp;

India clearly has better bowlers than him: Sanjay Manjrekar questions Md. Shami's spot in T20 WC squad

Team India have not had the best run in the T20 World Cup 2021 edition, being held in the UAE. The Virat Kohli-led Indian team lost their Super 12 round opening fixture versus arch-rivals Pakistan by ten wickets. On the other hand, the one-time winners also got thrashed by New Zealand by eight wickets before they finally turned things around in their third face-off, versus Afghanistan.

India beat Afghanistan by a whopping 66-run margin and need to win their remaining encounters convincingly whereas also hope for other results to favour them to stay alive in the T20 WC. Being in such a tricky situation, Indian players only have themselves to blame for their horrendous situation. Being touted as one of the strongest contenders, India are on the brink of an early elimination and need some clinical performances, along with the luck factor, to proceed to the semi-finals.

Hence, Team India supporters have vented out their frustrations on the national side. Mohammed Shami has been one of the most expensive bowlers for the Men in Blue, even though he ended with three scalps versus the Afghan line-up. He was subject to religious discrimination post the Pakistan thrashing whereas Kohli's 9-month old daughter Vamika has also received rape threats after India's first two games.

It is not right to harass players based on their religion. If such things happen, the future generation might be scared of taking up the game. Players are being called gaddars (traitors). Kohli’s nine-month-old daughter is getting rape threats. It is a sport, where one team has to win and one has to lose. India performed badly in a couple of games. But if you look at the stats of the entire year, India have been perhaps the most successful team."

Author's take

Despite the disappointments, Indian fans and supporters should back the team relentlessly as the national side have given them plenty to cheer for in the past. Moreover, attacking someone on religion or slamming their families add to the players' woes when they are already down with successive defeats. The players feel most disappointed after defeats and there is no denying that they always try to give their best, however, ultimately they have to face defeats as well. It is inevitable.

Players plays the game, religion doesn't: Former Pak spinner slams trolls for targetting Shami, Virat Kohli

T20 World Cup: Virat Kohli slams 'spineless people' for abusing Shami, calls it 'lowest level of human form'

Former India cricketer Mohammad Kaif has criticised the brutal trolling and online abuse directed at Team India's fast bowler Mohammed Shami after the team's loss against Pakistan in the T20 World Cup 2021. Shami was targeted by many on social media over his religion after having an off day at the office, against Pakistan.

India lost the game by ten wickets after failing to defend a total of 151 runs as Pakistan skipper Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan took the Men in Green over the line with an unbeaten opening stand. The defeat also marked an end to India's stellar unbeaten run against Pakistan in Cricket World Cup.

While many Indian players, including captain Kohli, were subjected to abuse on social media post the loss, Shami was even asked to 'leave the country' by a few. Ever since the conclusion of the match, the Indian cricket fraternity and millions of fans have extended their support to the fast bowler.

Former Indian cricketer Kaif is the latest to join the bandwagon as he stated that targeting Shami for his faith and asking him to leave the country was "uncalled-for and unpardonable".&nbsp;

"I have been witnessing how Mohammad Shami was trolled after the game against Pakistan. I have played enough cricket to understand that the fans do get angry when their team loses a game by a big margin.

"A batsman getting out for zero or a bowler getting hit for a six will always face abuse be it in a World Cup clash against Pakistan or an under-arm gully cricket game. But targeting someone for his or her faith, asking them to leave the country is uncalled-for and unpardonable," Kaif wrote in his column for India.com.

While extending his support for Shami, Kaif insisted that there are more genuine fans in the country than the amount of trolls on social media. And the real fans appreciate the talent and skills of the cricketers while limiting their criticism to the cricket field and not outside of it.

"Just imagine how a player, who for all his life has sacrificed everything to earn an India cap, would be feeling. But Shami, I know, is a tough cricketer. I can tell him from my experience, we have much more genuine fans in our country who give us unconditional love and they can easily outnumber the trolls on social media," said Kaif.

Shami will be eager to respond to his critics and deliver for Team India when they lock horns with New Zealand in their second game of the Super 12 in the T20 World Cup 2021 on October 31.

Targeting Mohammed Shami for his faith and asking him to leave the country is 'unpardonable': Md. Kaif

India and Pakistan met each other for the first time, across formats, after a gap of two years when they locked horns in match 4 of the Super 12 round in the T20 World Cup 2021 edition, being held in the UAE. Ahead of Sunday evening's clash (October 24), at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium, Dubai, India had a staggering 12-0 over their arch-rivals Pakistan in World Cup history (including both ODIs and T20Is).

However, India's unbeaten streak finally came to an end as Virat Kohli &amp; Co. were hammered by Babar Azam-led Men in Green by ten wickets, with 13 balls to spare. Nothing clicked for India as their top-order struggled versus Shaheen Afridi (3 for 31) whereas none apart from Kohli (57) managed to get going. India posted a modest 151-7, however, Pakistan openers (Babar 68* and Mohammad Rizwan's 79*) completed the run-chase with ease.

While Suryakumar Yadav, Rishabh Pant got starts, Ravindra Jadeja couldn't create much impact with the bat. In the bowling department, the likes of Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Mohammed Shami and Varun Chakravarthy struggled to control the run-flow and returned wicketless. Post the match, Shami has been subject to severe abuse on social media platforms by some&nbsp;Indian fans.&nbsp;&nbsp;

It was a devastating loss for Team India as both the batsmen and bowlers failed to deliver in the high-octane clash in Dubai. Captain Virat Kohli and Rishabh Pant were the only positives with the bat as they scored 57 and 39 runs respectively to help India post a fighting total of 151 runs on the board.

Former India cricketer Virender Sehwag came out in support of team India pacer Mohammed Shami, who is being brutally trolled on social media following India's loss against arch-rivals Pakistan in the T20 World Cup 2021 on Sunday (October 24). Sehwag slammed the trolls for abusing Shami, who had a bad day at the office against Pakistan in Dubai. India lost their opening encounter of the T20 World Cup 2021 against Pakistan by ten wickets to get off to the worst possible start. The defeat also marked an end to India's unbeaten run against the Men in Green in Cricket World Cup. India had a flawless 12-0 record against Pakistan in World Cup matches before Sunday with Pakistan making it 12-1 on Sunday. Following India's ten-wicket loss in the encounter, fast bowler Shami was viciously trolled on social media. Sehwag took to Twitter to call the trolls 'online mob' as he lashed out at them for attacking the pacer. Sehwag said he stood by Shami and wished him luck for the next match. “The online attack on Mohammad Shami is shocking and we stand by him. He is a champion and Anyone who wears the India cap has India in their hearts far more than any online mob. With you Shami," Sehwag wrote in a tweet. Captain Virat Kohli and Rishabh Pant were the only positives with the bat as they scored 57 and 39 runs respectively to help India post a fighting total of 151 runs on the board. Former Australia speedster Brett Lee feels India's KL Rahul and Mohammed Shami could emerge as the top run-getter and the leading wicket-taker in the T20 World Cup Super 12s.

Rahul has been in sublime form in the IPL where he was the third highest scorer and his Punjab Kings teammate Shami bowled some great spells in recent times including one in the World Cup practice game against England.

"I think India are probably the favourites with their top four or five batters and their bowling attack. I have KL Rahul down as the top run-scorer in the tournament and Mohammed Shami to be the leading wicket-taker, purely going on the last few months," Lee wrote in his column for ICC.

"So if they deliver and India have one of the leading run-scorers and wicket-takers, it's a good start."

Talking about Australia, Lee said that even though David Warner's confidence may have taken a beating after the harsh treatment meted out to him by Sunrisers Hyderabad in the IPL, the dashing opener is a big stage player, who will be key to the team's success in World Cup.

SRH removed Warner from the captaincy in the first leg of the IPL this year and when the league resumed in the UAE he, was left out of the playing XI after ordinary outings in the first two matches.

Lee exhorted the Aussies to change the statistics since they are yet to win a T20 World title. Australia begin their campaign against old foes South Africa on Saturday.

"We have not had a lot of success in this format - it is time we changed it and we do have a side that can take it all the way. It obviously won't be easy, especially when you look at how strong teams like England, India and New Zealand are," Lee further wrote.

"But this Australian side is loaded with talent and for me, the key is David Warner. I would like to say he is saving the runs for the games that count after his IPL form! He was really harshly dealt with there and it may have knocked some confidence out of him but he thrives on the big stage. Everything should be rosy for him here, class is permanent."

The 44-year-old, who played 76 Tests and 221 ODIs, picked Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood to do well for Australia, apart from Warner.

"I will also put a lot of weight behind Mitchell Starc. There has been some debate in the last year about Starc being past his best but he would be in my team every single time, Josh Hazlewood has had a good IPL and Pat Cummins is a superstar. He is the David Beckham of the team, whatever he touches turns to gold!."

About Australia's tournament-opener against the Proteas, Lee said "South Africa pose a massive threat".

"Players come and go, greats come and go. But when you play against a nation like South Africa, the respect is always there. We know they have some match-winners and that is where the T20 game will suit them.

"They have guys who can take the game away within four or five overs and it will be a real test.

"I think South Africa are closer to the Australian culture than any other nation, in terms of sport. New Zealand are obviously closer geographically but South Africans are abrasive on the sports field. They are always in your face and I love that, it's great. It is also why they have been so successful in all formats. I know they will give Australia a red-hot crack."

T20 World Cup: Brett Lee names Indian stars expected to be top scorer and leading wicket-taker

COVID-19 pandemic has changed cricket and the way the game was played traditionally. Bio bubbles have become the new normal to battle the contagious virus and ensure the players remain safe while playing their trades in several tournaments across the world. The bio-bubbles come with strict rules and restrictions, limiting the players to their team hotels.

Since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic last year, cricket is being played in bio-bubbles with the Indian cricket team also spending months away from their families during their tours. Playing in bio-bubbles has left many players struggling as the restrictions are taking a toll on their mental health .

Punjab Kings (PBKS) pacer Mohammed Shami recently opened up on the challenges of spending months in bio-bubbles while playing cricket. He has been away from his family for almost five months as he was part of India's tour of England and is now in UAE for the ongoing second leg of IPL 2021.&nbsp;

Shami said the players become irritated and can also get mentally disturbed due to spending a significant amount of time in bubbles while being away from their families. However, he insisted it is in the best interest of everyone and one has to be mentally strong to face the challenges that come with such bubbles.

“The biggest challenge is to go out in these times; travelling from one country to the other in bio-bubbles. If there is a long tour, you are away from your family for that period," Shami was quoted as saying by Sportstar.

Shami has so far played ten matches in IPL 2021 and has picked up 13 wickets at an economy rate of 7.33. He is the leading wicket-taker for the KL Rahul-led side and is fifth on the list of bowlers with the most wickets so far this season.

India channelled their aggression to their advantage to script a famous win at Lord's while England failed to rile up the opposition players despite regular attempts and that is something Joe Root is looking to avoid in the third Test beginning here on Wednesday.

The second Test was played in an intense atmosphere with players of both teams not shying from constant sledging.

With India leading the series 1-0, one expect more aggression from Virat Kohli's team but Root said his team has learnt its lessons from the previous game and will not be drawn into the conversations needlessly.

"There's the theatre and everything else surrounding the game. We've got to make sure that we play the game how we want to play and we look after that as best as we can, and not get too distracted or drawn into anything that's not honest," said Root in the virtual pre-match media interaction.

"We've got to be genuine to ourselves, genuine to how we are as individuals and how we are collectively and be as good as we can, the way that we go. Virat's team will play how they play, I just want us to go out and be the best version of ourselves."

Root has already admitted to tactical blunders that cost his side the Lord's Test. Their emotions also got the better of them.

"I think there were always conversations you always try to find one percenters in ways you can deal with different situations.

"We've done some good learning off the back of the last game I think we could have managed certain areas differently, me as the captain, we could have gone about things slightly differently.

"We have got three massive games to play in this series, there's a lot to play for. And you know we're desperate to bounce back strongly," he said.

England have made a few changes going into the game with Dawid Malan coming in to bat at number three and Haseeb Hameed moving up to open alongside Rory Burns.

Opener Dom Sibley has been dropped and Mark Wood has been ruled out of the game due to a shoulder injury.

Root expects Malan to make an instant impact even though the southpaw has not played a lot of red-ball cricket of late.

"Dawid obviously offers a lot of experience in that top three, not necessarily in terms of experience in Test cricket, but he has played a huge amount of international cricket now, he's dealt with pressure situations.

"He's played a lot of red ball cricket over the course of his career and he's also had great successes in a massive series in Australia and was our leading scorer out there, so we know that he's capable of big things."

Wood's injury has created an opening for Saqib Mahmood's Test debut and Root did not rule that out.

"I feel Saqib couldn't be in a better place to potentially play Test cricket, you look at how he's progressed over the last couple of years across all formats.

"But the opportunities, he's taken this year when I've been given them he's been exceptional," said Root.
The skipper, who has been scoring the bulk of the runs for his team, is confident that under-fire batting line-up will come good.

Root attributed his brilliant run of form to the technical changes he made recently.

"Sometimes it's that old adage if you have to take a little bit of backward step to come forward and feel like reaping the rewards of that and I think I've obviously, over a period of time, found myself getting out between 50 and 100.

"I feel I've managed those phases little bit better now. Just through a better understanding of what I want to play, what I want to leave. And I suppose, just even more experience within the game."

He duly credit the Indian pace attack for exploiting English conditions to perfection.

"They've got a wonderful attack and I say, look around Test cricket, there are some fantastic attacks out there. A lot of them do suit English conditions or have had the exploits to manage these conditions very well.

"India certainly have done that so far in this series, and we've got to keep being smart about finding ways to counter that, finding ways to score put the pressure back on them.

Virat's team will play how it plays, we will not get drawn into anything that's not honest: Root

England skipper Joe Root has praised the Indian pace attack ahead of the third Test, which will start on Wednesday (August 25) at Headingley in Leeds. "Obviously because 183 as per me we should make a good score and take the lead. We are in a good position because any team you bowl out for 183 at its home is a good performance," he said.

Former Australia pacer Brett Lee has praised the Indian bench strength and believes that the young bowlers are ready to take over from the likes of Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Shami.

India and England will lock horns in a five-match Test series beginning August 4 at Trent Bridge, Nottingham. The series will mark the start of the second cycle of the World Test Championship.

"The bench strength is crucial for a team to do well and India`s performance in Australia bears testimony to that. Teams are not of just 11 players anymore. There are some 16-17 of them and it is about having others who are good enough to stand up at the world level at any given time. Also, with travelling in bubbles, there will be players who get extended rests and others who get fatigued, but that is how the times are," Lee wrote in his column for ICC.

"A word here about the Indian bowling attack during the World Test Championship, which I feel has been fantastic. They have experienced bowlers and some good young guys coming through. They have enough pace, are excited and enthusiastic, ready to take over from the likes of Bumrah and Shami. This trend may help India do well for the next 10, 15 or even 20 years," he added.

In the first WTC cycle, New Zealand defeated India in the finals to win the Test mace. Lee believes that WTC has brought back the interest in the longest format of the game.

"It is heartening to note that lots of people have been watching Test cricket, and if at all any proof was needed for that, the broadcast figures for the final released last week are there for all to see. The World Test Championship has changed the cricket landscape, setting a new benchmark. We talk about T20 cricket and 50-over cricket and even newer versions of the game, but I believe that Test cricket continues to be in vogue," said Lee.

There will always be some series that is followed more than others. I think if a series is seen as high profile, it only helps build the excitement around the game, taking it beyond fans of just the participating countries, especially now with so much context to each match."

"As a fast bowler, it was heartening to see some good quality of fast bowling during the first edition of the championship. The final was dominated by the ball with some good bounce and carry. I hope that we continue to see more matches on pitches which are conducive for fast bowling," he added.

Doull said that Jasprit Bumrah and other Indian bowlers aren't genuine swing bowlers and rely more upon seam movement, hence couldn't match with their rivals in that ability.&nbsp;

India got two wickets from 49 overs on Sunday, with Ravichandran Ashwin and Ishant Sharma being the wicket-takers. Both Bumrah and Ishant looked flat with the new ball while Mohammed Shami looked in rhythm&nbsp;as the first change yet was unfortunate on most events.&nbsp;

Doull likewise added that he expected some more seam movement from Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Shami, yet they simply weren't adequately predictable.

In a conversation with Cricbuzz, Simon Doull said: "They are not genuine swing bowlers. We know Jasprit Bumrah can swing the ball, Ishant is more of a swing bowler nowadays, coming round-the-wicket he has that angled wrist with which he takes the ball away from the left-handers, into the right-handers. Mohammed Shami has never really been a genuine swing bowler and he's a seam bowler. That's why they weren't swinging the ball much. I did, however, expected the ball to seam a lot more. Shami and Bumrah at times found it but they probably weren't just consistent enough much like New Zealand weren't yesterday morning."

New Zealand scored 116 runs at the fall of two wickets Tom Latham and Devon Conway. Captain Kane Williamson is standing firm at the&nbsp;close by experienced batsman Ross Taylor.&nbsp;

When asked whether the absence of match practice influenced India's build-up in the WTC final, Doull said that this rationale was presumably overthinking. He referred to New Zealand's two-match series against England which helped them with match-readiness, adding that he expected something similar from Team India. :

"New Zealand went into the first Test at Lord's against England, they had the very same preparation that India had coming into this Test - intra-squad matches, training, practices - and they looked pretty set and ready to go. Tim Southee bowled beautifully and Devon Conway came off ten days of the net session into a double hundred at Lord's. And I thought India would be exactly the same. I think at times you may overthink it and say, 'Did they have enough preparation?' I think they probably did. I am sure in the last 10-12 days they would have bowled enough deliveries to make sure they were raring to go."

Simon Doull, nonetheless, additionally conceded that the lack of proper match practice has its own&nbsp;results.&nbsp;

"It's hard, though, when you can't simulate match practice. You try it in these intra-squad games but it just doesn't work. And that's the key - it's the genuinely hard match practice that makes you better and gets you ready for those matchups" - he concluded. &nbsp;

WTC Final: Not genuine swing bowlers - Simon Doull explains Indian pacers' struggles

Ajit Agarkar has named Mohammed Shami as his first pick in Team India's pace department for the World Test Championship final against New Zealand.&nbsp;

There has been a great deal of hypothesis about India's decision of seamers for the title decider. A spilled brief snippet of Virat Kohli saying he will focus on the Kiwis left-handers with Mohammed Shami and Mohammed Siraj working around the wicket has been doing the rounds.&nbsp;

During a conversation on Star Sports, Ajit Agarkar picked Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Shami, and Ishant Sharma as his favored seam department for Team India.

"The seamers will play a part and India has got as formidable an attack as any in the world. I think that's been their strength over the last few years. Whether it is a Bumrah, Shami - the No.1 bowler for me for a Test line-up for India and Ishant Sharma, he has gotten better over his career as he has played" - he said&nbsp;

He brought up that the Virat Kohli-drove side can even pick to play the fourth seamer in the event that it is a green top.&nbsp;

"So, those three certainly will start and if it is a green seaming wicket, you might see a fourth one for all you know. We still don't know what the conditions are likely to be but we presume in England, with the Dukes' ball, in particular, there will always be helpful for the seam bowlers. You can't imagine a pitch being very dry in mid-June" - he added.

Team India is probably going to play Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja alongside three pace bowlers, except if the conditions are shifted intensely for the seamers. Shardul Thakur may very well push out Mohammed Siraj if India ends up playing the fourth seamer to add some profundity to the batting line-up.

While expressing that the two sides will tingle to be the victors of the debut ICC World Test Championship, Ajit Agarkar was especially energetic about Team India making the last in the wake of being gone up against with a tough assignment at one phase.&nbsp;

"It is a big deal. Everyone remembers the first person to get to any sort of landmark and that's what makes it special. So, to be involved and particularly in the middle when the rules changed, the percentages came into play when India was way ahead at one point, they still had to get the job done. Both teams will be up for it and both teams will be very excited to be a part of it" - he said.

Cricket: Ajit Agarkar picks his No.1 bowler for the inaugural WTC Final

Indian pacer Mohammed Shami has said that the current crop of fast bowlers of the country has not only forced teams to take notice but also pushed them to twice before preparing green tracks to host the Indian cricket team. Shami, who is one of the senior members of India’s bowling department, is gearing up for a gruelling tour of the UK where India will play the final of ICC World Test Championship and five Test matches against England.<o:p></o:p>

India’s fast bowling contingent includes the likes of Jasprit Bumrah, Shami, Ishant Sharma, Umesh Yadav, Mohammed Siraj along with Shardul Thakur. <o:p></o:p>

"The best thing about our bowling unit is that we have 4-5 pacers who can constantly bowl at over 140-145 clicks. You can find 1-2, but to find 4-5 is tough, and we have that. We force the opposition to think what wickets they want to offer us. I don't think we've had bowlers who could bowl at this pace earlier, we never had 4-5 of them coming in units. Earlier, teams used to plan easily against us but today they are forced to think otherwise," Shami told India News.

'You did all the celebration for me': Mohammed Shami on Virat Kohli's animated send offs

It has not been a simple excursion for Mohammed Shami, one of the key bowlers of India's pace bowling department across all formats, to arrive at the space where he is today. From the battle of early cricketing years, injuries to a significant disturbance in close to home life a couple of years back - he has endured everything.&nbsp;

The experience has hardened him up such a lot that he favors an accept it-as-it-comes mentality throughout everyday life - and it's the same with regards to significant tasks like the World Test Championship finale against New Zealand one month from now or the five-Test arrangement against England which follows. Team India have additionally picked 3 backup seamers-Prasidh Krishna, Avesh Khan, and Arzan Nagwaswalla.&nbsp;

Mohammed Shami said as a senior individual from the squad, the sensation of duty comes naturally to him.

Lamentably, however, Shami couldn't be a part of the purple fix as he was struck on the elbow by a Pat Cummins while batting during the day-night first Test in Adelaide Oval - which governed him out of the remainder of the series just as the England series which followed. In any case, regardless of arranging a rebound to serious cricket after almost four months, Shami showed no corrosion as he dove head-first into the IPL crusade for his team Punjab Kings.

‘‘The experience over the years has helped me to learn to look after my body. I know how much training is needed, how to keep myself hydrated etc - all these factors must have also helped’’ – he said&nbsp;

Looking forward at what might be his way to deal with bowling in England, where his strong reverse swing could be at a higher cost than normal, Shami felt it would rely upon the conditions.

‘‘I do not believe in overthinking about what my approach will be. I found my rhythm back in the IPL and the rest, of course, depends on the conditions,’’ he said.

Mohammed Shami is just 20 wickets short of turning into the fifth Indian pacer to achieve 200 wickets in Tests. The fast bowler will be eager to accomplish the milestone on the impending visit through England.

'Virat has always been supportive': Mohammed Shami talks about India's successful fast-bowling unit

Indian pacers Mohammed Shami and Navdeep Saini are likely to join the Indian squad from the third Test in England, scheduled to be hosted by Ahmedabad from February 24. Both Shami and Saini were out of the Indian squad for the first two Tests due to injuries but have now recovered.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The Indian selectors are all set to announce the squad for the last two Tests against England soon and could also announce the team for the five-match T20I series that follows the longest format of the game, according to a report in TOI.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Shami had returned to India after fracturing his right arm during the first Test in Adelaide while Saini injured his groin in the final Test in Brisbane.&nbsp;&nbsp;

“Saini is currently at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru. He has bowling at full tilt. The Delhi selectors wanted to have his services for the Vijay Hazare Trophy but Saini was asked to stay back at NCA as he is likely to join the team in Ahmedabad,” a BCCI source told TOI.&nbsp;

The Indian selectors are all set to announce the squad for the last two Tests against England soon and could also announce the team for the five-match T20I series that follows the longest format of the game, according to a report in TOI. Shami had returned to India after fracturing his right arm during the first Test in Adelaide while Saini injured his groin in the final Test in Brisbane. “Saini is currently at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru. He has bowling at full tilt. The Delhi selectors wanted to have his services for the Vijay Hazare Trophy but Saini was asked to stay back at NCA as he is likely to join the team in Ahmedabad,” a BCCI source told TOI. ALSO READ: Indians never crib about overseas conditions: R Ashwin shuts down Chennai pitch critics Shami had resumed bowling a week ago and is nearing full fitness whereas Umesh Yadav has started bowling at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru after recovering from a calf injury. According to the report in TOI, the Indian team management is keen on keeping Saini fresh for the T20I series. The report adds that Rishabh Pant is also likely to return to the Indian limited-overs squad after his great run of form in Test cricket whereas Suryakumar Yadav could be added to the T20I squad. The BCCI is also keen on making an "A" pool ahead of the T20I World Cup, scheduled to be hosted by India later in the year with the likes of Nitish Rana, Ishan Kishan and Siddharth Kaul in the fray. Mohammed Shami, Navdeep Saini likely to join Indian team for 3rd Test vs England

In what comes as a huge blow to Indian cricket team, pacer Mohammed Shami, whose bowling hand was fractured during the third day of the Adelaide Test, has been advised six weeks of rest and will be flying back to India on Wednesday.

Shami will have to undergo a brief period of quarantine in India. The 30-year-old was hit by a bouncer from Aussie pacer Pat Cummins and couldn’t pick the bat in pain. However, in the latest development, Shami will not be available for the remainder of the series due to fractured hand and has been advised six weeks of rest.&nbsp;

Shami is likely to be fit by the end of January after undergoing six-week rest period and is expected to be available for India’s full-fledged home series against England, scheduled to start from February 4.

Shami’s injury comes at a wrong time for India with the visitors already missing skipper Virat Kohli from second Test onwards. Shami was one of the heroes for India when they visited Down Under in 2018-19 and ended up clinching the historic series 2-1.

Meanwhile, Mohammed Siraj or Navdeep Saini are set to replace Shami in the playing XI for the Boxing Day Test at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.

Team India’s premier strike bowlers Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Shami are unlikely to take part in all six white-ball matches against Australia, keeping the four-match Test series starting in December 17 in view. India will take on Australia in three ODIs and as many T20Is – to be played between November 27 to December 8 – before the red-ball series kickstarts.&nbsp;

With workload management being the prime focus after a busy Indian Premier League (IPL) 2020 both Shami and Bumrah, head coach Ravi Shastri and bowling coach Bharat Arun will want to keep their ace bowling pair fit and fresh especially when Ishant Sharma’s availability for the first Test is in the dark cloud.

The first red ball warm-match at Drummoyne Oval is set to be played on December 6. However, India’s second and third T20I will be played at the same time, coinciding with the schedule of the first warm-up match. The Indian team management might not risk Shami and Bumrah play six back to back matches in 12 days.&nbsp;

"If both (Bumrah and Shami) play the T20 Internationals (on Dec 4, 6 and 8), then they will have one warm-up matchless which I don't think the team management will fancy at this moment," a source said. So, there is a chance that Shami and Bumrah will be rotated during the white-ball series. Shami has been seen primarily bowling with pink and red balls during net sessions, which is an indicator of where his and team's priorities lie.

AUS vs IND: Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Shami likely to be rotated in white-ball series

Kings XI Punjab captain KL Rahul said that his pace spearhead Mohammed Shami wanted to bowl six yorkers in the Super Over while defending just five runs in their dramatic IPL match against Mumbai Indians here on Sunday.

The match ended in a tie in the regulation 20 overs and KXIP could only score five runs in the first Super Over but Shami bowled brilliantly to restrict MI to the same score. KXIP eventually won the match in the second Super Over.

"You can never prepare for Super Overs. No team does. So you have to trust your bowler's gut. You trust your bowler, and let them believe their instinct and gut," Rahul said at the post-match presentation.

"He (Shami) was very clear he wanted to go six yorkers. He has been phenomenal, and keeps getting better every game. It is important that senior players win the games for the team."

Rahul, who was named man of the match for his 77, expressed happiness at the victory but said his side would not want to make a habit of winning like this.

"It is not the first time. But we don't want to make a habit out of it. We will take the two points in the end. It doesn't always happen the way you plan so you don't really know how to stay balanced.

"I was just hoping we get over the line because the boys have been working really really hard. In the games that we have lost, even then we have played well and just not been able to get over the line."

He said the wicket was slightly slower and so he knew it would be important to get runs in the Powerplay.

"I knew Chris and Pooran... I trust them to take down spinners. So Chris coming in has made my job easier as a batter."

On his side winning two back-to-back close matches, he said, "We still want to take it one game at a time. It is sweet after the kind of matches we have lost but the talk in the dressing room is to focus on the process.

"We know we need to win everything from here, but we can't forget the processes that lead to a win."

Mumbai Indians batsman Kieron Pollard said the match showed that every run counted.

"In T20 cricket, 1 run and 2 runs are very very crucial. I am sure it was great for viewership. KXIP got the better of us and deserved the two points. KL again batted beautifully, going down to a Super Over, congratulations to them," he said.

"Around the 11-12 over, we knew we were a couple of overs behind. Getting 170-odd, that was a good total - above-par on a track that was on the slower side. With the dimensions, we thought we can defend that."

Despite the loss, Pollard said his side played good cricket.

"It's a matter of trying to improve each and every time. There are a couple of areas we need to improve on. We have a four-day break, enough time to reflect. The guys are confident in the dressing room.

"I was told that he (Rohit) is not feeling well (after the loss). We'll see what happens. He's a fighter," said the West Indian who remained not out on 34 off just 12 balls.

Asked how MI will take the energy-sapping loss, he said, "It's a game of cricket, you go out there to do your best, you prepare, there's a process and the situation dictates what happens.

"We were on the losing side tonight. We should have won this I believe deep down but these things happen."

Shami wanted to bowl six yorkers in Super Over: Rahul

India’s premier fast bowler Mohammed Shami has claimed that Team India may have the best pace attack in the history of Test cricket brushing aside the fearsome West Indies pacers of the 1970s and 80s.&nbsp;

Shami along with Ishant Sharma, Jasprit Bumrah, Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Umesh Yadav have taken giant leaps in making the Indian attack feared in world cricket.&nbsp;

"You and everyone else in the world will agree to this -- that no team has ever had five fast bowlers together as a package," Shami said in an online chat for ESPNcricinfo.

"Not just now, in the history of cricket, this might be the best fast-bowling unit in the world," he added.
When asked about whether the Indian pace attack is better than the Windies’ battery of 70s and 80s, Shami said that fast bowlers were waiting to take over the scene from the spinners.&nbsp;

"We have a bowler on the bench who can work up speeds of 145-48 kph (over 90mph)," said Shami, who has 180 wickets from 49 Tests.

The 29-year-old, who has rejuvenated himself to become one of the finest across formats, said that it is Indian skipper Virat Kohli who is central to things but when it comes to fast bowling, Kohli leaves it for the pacers to decide.

"We surround Virat Kohli and ask him to make the decision," Shami said of the support for the Indian captain.

"But he normally says, 'Don't get me involved in all this; you decide among yourselves, I don't have an issue'.
"We support each other whether we're getting wickets or not," he said.

Shami battled weight issues, injuries and legal quarrels before making a comeback into the Indian team. He scalped 14 wickets at the ICC World Cup 2019 including a match-winning memorable hat-trick. Shami also took 13 wickets during South Africa Test series in 2019.

Shami, during an Instagram Live session, said that he doesn’t think there’s enough time for IPL this year while adding that the T20 World Cup may also get postponed. Shami said that with many bilateral series and events getting cancelled, cricket calendar needs to be shuffled.&nbsp;
