<p>Sasha Korogodski, the lead researcher of the report, pointed out that while over 530 companies worldwide specialise in diabetes diagnostics, only 33 are located in the regions most affected by undiagnosed cases — Africa, south-east Asia and the western Pacific.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"Limited healthcare infrastructure, including a shortage of healthcare professionals and diagnostic equipment, can impede the early diagnosis of diabetes," said Korogodski.</p>

<p>This research looks at over 2,800 companies, 1,500 investors, and 80 research and development hubs devoted to diabetes to evaluate the global impact of this condition.</p>

<p>Despite substantial investments, diabetes remains a significant contributor to global mortality. In 2021, nearly 7 million deaths worldwide were attributed to diabetes, with over $970 billion spent on treatment. It also found that most of the organisations involved in diabetes research and care — over 70 companies, or 55 per cent globally&nbsp; — are located in the United States.</p>

<p>As per the study published in Nature Communications, the worm that is also known as 'night crawler' contributes to 6.5 per cent of all grain harvests globally. This includes crops like rice, maize, wheat and barley.</p>

<p>Their contribution is highest in the global south, where earthworms contribute to 10 per cent of production in Sub-Saharan Africa, and eight per cent in Latin America and Caribbean.</p>

<p>Scientists have long been aware of earthworms and their contribution to enhancing plant growth. Charles Darwin, a naturalist, wrote about this way back in 1881. However, this research is the first time that a number has been put to exactly how much they help.</p>

<p>The report stated that they are witnessing ‘The Great Variabilisation Trend’. Enterprises in a bid to cut costs are moving away from fixed employees to task-based employees. This has led to an increase in gigification because enterprises are now able to factor in variable demand and manage operational costs.</p>

<p>Hence, the sectors where gig wasn’t very popular are now becoming a norm.</p>

<p>One of the primary reasons behind the decrease in frontline jobs was driven by the e-commerce sector. The dominance of the e-commerce sector, says the report, has been replaced by the logistics and mobility and financial management and IT sectors, which collectively contribute to more than 61 per cent of the new jobs created.</p>

<h2><strong>Increase in sexual harassment cases</strong></h2>

<p>Recent months have witnessed a steady increase in the number of sexual misconduct cases at America's main Antarctic base.&nbsp;</p>

<p>As per a National Science Foundation (NSF) report published in 2022, 59 per cent of the women reported a negative experience of harassment or assault while in Antarctica,&nbsp;72 per cent of women said such behaviour was a problem on ice.</p>

<p>Speaking to AP, many women said&nbsp;"they were left to fend for themselves against sexual harassers."</p>

<p>A previous report by AP also found a pattern, where women working in Antarctica found their claims of sexual harassment minimised by employers.</p>

<p>In many of these cases, alcohol played a role. However, as per NSF, the changes involving alcohol were related to morale and welfare at the base, and had nothing to do with preventing sexual harassment or assault.</p>

<p>It has published a list of several new measures, including enhanced training, a new survey to collect data and monitor trends, and visits to the ice from experts, all of which will help deal with incidents of sexual assault in Antarctica.</p>

<p>"We will not rest until we are confident that every member of the Antarctic community feels safe and supported," said Karen Marrongelle, the NSF's chief operating officer in a statement.</p>

<p>Dharmesh Rathod, Kuvariya' Garba trainer talking to the press said: "Vinit had been coming to my garba classes for the past two months and was doing well. On Monday too, we were all enjoying ourselves when he suddenly collapsed on the ground. We called a 108 ambulance and took him to the hospital but unfortunately, we could not save him."</p>

<h2><strong>Did he have a history of heart ailments?</strong></h2>

<p>As per NDTV, speaking to the press, a member of the victim's family said that Vinit did not have any underlying illness and was completely fine.</p>

<p>The case comes to light at a time when India has increasingly seen incidence&nbsp;of young people suddenly collapsing due to cardiac arrests.&nbsp;</p>

<p>During a live interview on another GB News programme, 'Dan Wootton Tonight', Fox asked what "self-respecting man" would "climb into bed" with PoliticsJOE reporter Ava Evans.&nbsp;</p>

<p>These comments were reportedly a reaction to Evans' earlier statement against calls for a minister of men.</p>

<h2><strong>Questioning the role of monarchy in modern Thailand</strong></h2>

<p>BBC reports that Arnon Nampa, a human rights lawyer, was the first activist to publicly call for a national dialogue about the monarchy's role in today's Thailand.</p>

<p>On August 3, 2020, speaking during a student-led protest against the then-military-backed government, Nampa broke a longstanding taboo by advocating for the monarchy to be part of wider reform discussions.</p>

<p>The move aided his rise to prominence, but it came with its own set of risks. In Thailand, something as minor&nbsp;as criticising the royal family on social media has historically resulted in severe penalties. In the past, people have been jailed for up to 30 to 40 years.</p>

<p>Arnon Nampa has been charged 14 times under the lese-majeste and faces multiple charges under other national security laws like the Sedition and the Computer Crimes Act. He has already spent several months in prison, reports BBC.</p>

<h2><strong>Public debate and more</strong></h2>

<p>The verdict against Arnon comes after months of public debate about the lese-majeste law following the general election in May.&nbsp;</p>

<p>In the elections, the progressive Move Forward party, which advocated for reform, including changes to the lese-majeste law, won the largest number of votes and seats in parliament.&nbsp;</p>

<p>However, the military-appointed Senate used this demand as justification to block the Move Forward from forming a government. Instead, it ultimately formed an alternative coalition consisting of many conservative parties.</p>

<h2><strong>The Royal Defamation law</strong></h2>

<p>Thailand's lese-majeste law criminalises insults against the monarchy. The enforcement of this law has faced widespread criticism for its harsh penalties, and its enforcement has increased since the military seized power in a 2014 coup.</p>

<p>"However, following a series of communications with the parents they informed Gymnastics Ireland that they would not be engaging in the process and were seeking legal advice," it added.</p>

<p>Now, a new "gear change" by UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak will force convicted rapists to serve the duration of their full sentences. This, as per Daily Mail, is likely to be part of an upcoming speech by Sunak.</p>

<h2>The 'real Rishi'</h2>

<p>As per Daily Mail, the move is part of a wider 'gear change' by Number 10 Downing Street, which aims to reveal the 'real Rishi' ahead of the general elections next year.</p>

<p>Part of this strategy was last Wednesday's 'green gamble' hitting the brakes on the race to net zero.</p>

<p>At the time, announcing the move, Sunak said it was "the first in a series of long-term decisions to deliver change".</p>

<p>As per the report, UK Ministry of Justice figures show that in the seven years — since 2016, 112 sex offenders released early have gone on to commit serious offences.</p>

<p>Notorious cases include that of Ashley Shuck, a rapist who in 2017 was convicted of raping ad kidnapping an elderly woman&nbsp;and sexually assaulting another woman, just weeks after he was released halfway through a previous eight-year sentence for raping an 18-year-old.</p>

<p>Last year, the Police, Crime and Courts Act automatically ended the early release for sexual offences that carry the maximum sentences. Additionally, those serving a sentence of four years or more are now required to serve at least two-thirds of their sentence.</p>

<p>Obesity is increasing in the United States, according to new data from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.</p>

<p>As per the data released on Thursday (September 21st) obesity is becoming more common in a growing number of US states.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The survey by the CDC and state health departments revealed that of the 50 US states, 22 have at least 35 per cent of adults dealing with obesity. All states have obesity rates of at least 20 per cent.</p>

<h2><strong>Increasing obesity</strong></h2>

<p>Data from the Behavioural Risk Factor Surveillance System shows that in 2021, only 19 states had at least 35 per cent of adults with obesity. New data from 2022 shows this number is up, and now 22 states have reported at least 35 per cent of adults with obesity.</p>

<p>The number was highest in Louisiana, Oklahoma and West Virginia, where more than 40 per cent of the adults had obesity.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Furthermore, the data also found "notable differences" in the prevalence of obesity by race and ethnicity.</p>

<p>Among black adults, obesity was reported by around 35 per cent of adults in 38 states. At least 35 per cent of Hispanic adults in 32 states were found to be obese.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The figure did not exceed 35 per cent among Asian adults in any state. While for white adults, the 35 per cent metric was reached in 14 states.</p>

<h2><strong>How did the report measure obesity?</strong></h2>

<p>The report considers adults with a body mass index of 30 and above as obese. The data, as per a CNN report, is based on self-reported measurements of height and weight.</p>

<p>In a draft form released on Wednesday (September 20), the FAA, via its proposed rule, seeks "to limit the growth of new orbital debris and reduce the potential for collisions with spacecraft and satellites to promote a sustainable space environment."</p>

<h2><strong>Why is this important?</strong></h2>

<p>This junk can put space missions and satellite launches at significant risk. Upon launch, the space vehicles can potentially collide with the junk that is crowding the planet's orbit.&nbsp;</p>

<p>In a statement, the FAA said "If left unchecked, the accumulation of orbital debris will increase the risk of collisions and clutter orbits used for human spaceflight and for satellites providing communications, weather and global positioning system services."&nbsp;</p>

<p>As per the FAA, as of July 2023, the Earth's orbit contains over 23,000 orbital objects of sizes 10 cm and above. Furthermore, there are around one-half million objects sized between 1 and 10 cm, over 100 million larger than 1mm.</p>

<h2><strong>How will FAA achieve this junk shedding?</strong></h2>

<p>The proposed rule provides commercial space operators with five options to choose from. These options relate to the disposal of the upper stages of launch vehicles.&nbsp;</p>

<p>As per the FAA website, these include: conducting a controlled re-entry; moving the upper stage to a less congested storage or graveyard orbit; sending the upper stage to an Earth-escape orbit; the retrieval of the upper stage (called active debris removal) within five years; or performing an uncontrolled atmospheric disposal.</p>

<p>Strictly limiting the uncontrolled reentry of the upper stages can take away the uncertainty of where it might land. This will help mitigate the risk to people on the ground and in flight, says FAA.</p>

<p>"Shortening the removal deadline would decrease the risk of orbital debris causing damage to spacecraft, which could create more debris, shorten another spacecraft’s mission or endanger the lives of human spaceflight participants," states the proposed rule, as reported by space.com.</p>

<p>"Given that the entire mission lifetime of upper stages and their components is quite short, and spent upper stages pose a significant risk of debris propagation the longer they are in orbit, it may be appropriate to have a shorter disposal timeline of 5 years or another time period less than 25 years," it notes.</p>

Furthermore, there are around one-half million objects sized between 1 and 10 cm, over 100 million larger than 1mm. How will FAA achieve this junk shedding? The proposed rule provides commercial space operators with five options to choose from. These options relate to the disposal of the upper stages of launch vehicles. As per the FAA website, these include: conducting a controlled re-entry; moving the upper stage to a less congested storage or graveyard orbit; sending the upper stage to an Earth-escape orbit; the retrieval of the upper stage (called active debris removal) within five years; or performing an uncontrolled atmospheric disposal. <p>However, he vowed that for the benefit of the people, he would find a middle ground.</p>

<p>Currently, in Thailand, people older than 20 years of age are legally allowed to use cannabis within their residences. Additionally, food containing cannabis extracts can be consumed within licensed restaurant premises. However, pregnant or breastfeeding women are not allowed to consume cannabis or its products.</p>

Thailand PM vows to change law that allows recreational use of cannabis

<p>As reported by The Telegraph, the disease that is without a cure and causes infertility in dogs was previously only observed in imported animals.&nbsp;</p>

<p>However, talking to the publication, Dr Christine Middlemiss, the Chief Veterinary Officer at the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs in Britain, has disclosed that evidence suggests that some dogs in the UK are contracting this infection.</p>

<h2><strong>Zoonotic implications</strong></h2>

<p>As per the report, while it is not yet considered endemic, the instances in which British dogs contracted Brucella canis have increased.&nbsp;</p>

<p>They were linked to specific circumstances, including mating with an imported dog, contact with a pregnant imported dog, or being the offspring of imported canines.&nbsp;</p>

<p>However, in spite of the low risk, the situation has drawn increasing attention, particularly as three people have contracted the disease from dogs this year. This has also led to the doubling of human tests conducted by the NHS.</p>

<p>Dr Middlemiss pointed out that the infection seemed to be spreading within kennels through breeding, and that the prevalence remained relatively low.</p>

<p>"There is not a lot – &nbsp;there is very little. But that is new for us."</p>

<p>The report reportedly lists euthanasia as the only definitive method to halt onward transmission. However, the decision still lies with the dog owner, as a Brucella canis positive result is not a definite death sentence.</p>

<p>However, destruction of forest habitats in south-east Asia has put the genus at the threat of extinction.&nbsp;</p>

<p>This genus, as per The Guardian, has around 42 species and also includes the largest flowers in the world that are more than one metre across.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Only one species of the genus, Rafflesia magnifica, is listed as critically endangered by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN). Researchers want all the Rafflesia species to come under the protection of the IUCN Red List of threatened species.</p>

<h2><strong>Iconic flower under threat</strong></h2>

<p>A new study published in the journal Plants, People, Planet claims that over two-thirds of the Rafflesia flowers are not protected under the current conservation strategies.</p>

<p>Dr Chris Thorogood, from the University of Oxford Botanic Garden, the author of this study that happens to be the first assessment of threats faced by these plants, said that the assessment "highlights how the global conservation efforts geared towards plants – however iconic – have lagged behind those of animals".</p>

Posting the video, Suter wrote: "Yesterday, we were in the West Coast National Park in South Africa. Fortunately, we were able to rescue three seals that were entangled in a net. In this video, you can only see two of them - so grateful they all made it."</p>

<p>"It was a very tangible reminder of how important it is to educate ourselves, clean up our beaches and work to ensure plastic and things like this are not in our oceans. There is so much plastic and other waste, I can't imagine what animals go through," he added.</p>

<p>As per World Animal Protection, an international non-profit organisation that has been working for animal welfare for over 50 years, thousands of marine animals die due to human fishing gear every year.</p>

<p>"Every year, over 136,000 whales, dolphins, seals and turtles are caught in ghost gear – lost, discarded or abandoned fishing equipment."</p>

<p>"A staggering 640,000 tonnes, the equivalent of 52,000 London double decker buses, or 12 Sydney Harbour Bridges of ghost gear is left in our oceans annually. Some of these nets are bigger than football pitches."</p>

<p>As per the animal welfare organisation, fishing gears that are made to "capture and kill" marine animals "continue&nbsp;to do this after being left in the ocean."</p>

<p>Fortuitously, the CME that the Parker Solar Probe travelled through was on the sun's far side and not directed toward Earth. <p>Just a year ago, Japan's population aged 65 or older stood at 29&nbsp;per cent. This year, this figure is expected to expand to a record 29.1 per cent of its 125 million population.</p>

<p>Third-ranked Finland's 23.6 per cent population is of the age bracket.</p>

<p>As per the National Institute of Population and Social Security Research, by 2040, it is projected that around 34.8 per cent of the Japanese population will be aged 65 or more.</p>

<p>As per the ministry, with the baby boomer (born between 1946-64) population turning 75 or older, a huge part of Japan's people are now 'older'. Approximately 12.59 million people are aged 80 or older, while 20 million are 75 or older, it said.</p>

<p>This has resulted in the nation relying on an elderly labour force. As per AFP, more than nine million elderly Japanese are working and account for around 13.6 per cent or one in seven workers that make up the nation's workforce.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Gao Yi, executive director of the Translational Medicine Centre at Zhujiang Hospital of Southern Medical University in Guangdong province said: "In animal models involving pigs and monkeys, we observed that our method increased the survival rate from 17 per cent, as seen with conventional treatments, to 87.5 per cent."</p>

<h2><strong>How will it help liver patients?</strong></h2>

<p>Currently, liver transplantation is the only effective treatment for liver failure.&nbsp;However, the treatment is often limited by a shortage of donors, complex surgeries, high cost, and finally, the need for lifelong immunosuppressants.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The stem cell-based artificial liver aims to support the diseased liver until it regenerates or a suitable graft for transplantation becomes available.</p>

<p>China, as per the report, has a high prevalence of liver failures, with about 500,000 to 1 million newly diagnosed cases reported every year. Despite that, conventional treatments offer only&nbsp;limited management, and till date, there is no cure.&nbsp;</p>

<h2><strong>When will the treatment be available to the public?</strong></h2>

<p>Clinical trials for this innovative device will determine its effectiveness in human patients. However, it represents a promising breakthrough in liver failure treatment.</p>

<p>These antibodies, as per PTI, are vital for the treatment of Nipah virus infections, a disease with a high mortality rate. Monoclonal antibodies are synthetic proteins that mimic the immune system's ability to fight harmful pathogens.</p>
