The US state of Utah has sued the short video format application TikTok. It accused&nbsp;the Chinese-owned app of harming and "exploiting" young children by intentionally making them spend unhealthy amounts of time on the platform.

The suit filed on Tuesday (Oct 10th) is only the latest action challenging the popular app in the United States. Indiana and Arkansas had launched similar lawsuits against the video-sharing platform earlier.

<h2>Compulsion, exploitation and more</h2>

Utah's suit has been filed in the state court. It alleges that videos on TikTok leverage "highly powerful algorithms and manipulative design features — many of which mimic features of slot machines" and claims that as a result of these "manipulative" tactics, young consumers get hooked.

Reuters reports that in the filing, Utah Attorney General Sean Reyes said: "What these children (and their parents) do not know is that TikTok is lying to them about the safety of its app and exploiting them into checking and watching the app compulsively, no matter the terrible effects it has on their mental health, their physical development, their family, and their social life."

<h2>What action is Utah seeking?</h2>

As per Reyes, Utah's investigation into TikTok is ongoing. The Utah Attorney General, as per Reuters, also said that he will next week ask a court to compel TikTok's compliance with investigative subpoenas.

Utah, according to the report, is seeking civil penalties and an injunction that will prohibit TikTok from violating a consumer protection state law which shields them from deceptive business practices.

Responding to the suit, TikTok said that it "has industry-leading safeguards for young people, including an automatic 60-minute time limit for users under 18 and parental controls for teen accounts."

TikTok, which is owned by ByteDance, a China-based company, has more than 150 million users in the US.

The company is already facing multiple lawsuits across the US. Last year, a group of Republican lawmakers had alleged that "many children are exposed to non-stop offerings of inappropriate content that TikTok’s algorithm force-feeds to them."

In December, Indiana sued the app. The case is pending in the state court. Arkansas launched its suit in March. The case that also involves Facebook-parent Meta accuses the social media companies of "pushing addictive platforms."

The state of Montana went one step further and banned the use of the app in the state. However, TikTok is seeking to block the ban which takes effect on Jan 1st. A hearing of the lawsuit is scheduled for Thursday (Oct&nbsp;12).

Colonel Naw Bu revealed that the strike attack happened at around 11:30 pm on Monday night.

The KIA is currently investigating the nature of the strike that struck the camp near Laiza town, situated along the border with China.

As per Colonel Naw Bu, they "did not hear any aircraft." This has prompted suspicions that the military may have employed a drone to carry out the strike.&nbsp;

Kyaw Zaw called on the international community "to take action," and said that the attack so close to China showed that the junta did not respect its neighbour.

"Even though oil prices spiked by 4.3 percent on the first trading day after the attack, the US dollar weakened, and share prices rose, implying that traders think this military shock will also likely not trigger a new bear market," he added.

In Israel's Ofakim, a woman reportedly distracted the Hamas for 15 hours, before being rescued.&nbsp;The woman has been identified by Israel's Channel 12 News as Rachel Adari.

Talking to the Israeli News channel, Rachel recalled that five terrorists armed to the teeth with guns and other weapons entered the house where she and her husband were present.

"I said to my husband, if we will die, we will die together," Rachel Adari told the outlet.

The couple's son, a police officer, was on the outside, helping the YAMAM counterterrorism force plan a rescue. Aware of the fact, Rachel decided to buy some time.

She told Channel 12 that she could see that the Hamas operatives were agitated, and that's when she came up with a plan.

"I saw they were angry, and I asked them if they were hungry," she said.

"I made them coffee and gave them cookies. They started singing Lior Narkis (Israeli singer's) songs to me. I distracted them. I knew my son was helping the YAMAM and that they would come rescue me."

The next few hours were spent waiting, hoping to be rescued.

At around midnight, the couple saw the IDF approaching.

After 15 hours of waiting, the couple was rescued. The Hamas operatives were killed by the Israeli special forces during the rescue operation.&nbsp;

<h2>The Israel-Hamas conflict</h2>

Just a few days ago, Israel, which has one of the world's most powerful militaries, was caught off guard by what is proving to be the worst breach in its defences since Arab forces waged a war around 50 years ago, in 1973.

As per Reuters, the death toll from the Hamas attacks on Saturday (Oct 7) has climbed to 900 — mostly civilians gunned down in their homes.

Gaza's Health Ministry claims that the retaliatory strikes have led to the death of around 687 Palestinians.

The United Nations reports that around 180,000 Gazans have been rendered homeless due to the conflict.

Winters also disclosed that the police were coordinating with investigators from the US State Department.

According to the Japan Meteorological Agency, 280 kilometres (170 miles) south of Tokyo, Hachijojima island was hit by tsunami waves of height 60 centimetres (24 inches). Smaller tsunami waves of 40cm and 20 cm were recorded in the western Kochi prefecture and southern Miyazaki prefecture, respectively.

Seismologists from JMA, as per an AFP report, said there were no immediate reports of damage from the minor waves generated.

However, despite that, Tateyama city of Chiba, located near Tokyo, had urged residents in coastal areas to evacuate after the advisory.

During a press conference, JMA official Toshihiro Shimoyama warned that "it is dangerous in the sea and near the coast".

Dubbing the killing an assassination, the US-based journalist, rights activist, in a video posted on social media platform X, said, "Today shocking revelations about the 'assassination' of Sikh religious leader, Hardeep Singh Nijjar, in Canada have emerged from within the CCP. It is alleged that the 'assassination' was carried out by CCP agents."

Zeng attributed the information to the Chinese writer and YouTuber Lao Deng, who she said lives in Canada now.

"Lao stated that in early June this year, as part of their disruption initiative 'Ignition Plan', the CCP Ministry of State Security sent a high-ranking official to Seattle, USA. A secret meeting was held there... The objective was to sabotage relations between India and the West," she claimed on X.

"The agents were tasked with assassinating Hardeep Singh Nijjar, the Sikh leader in Canada. Following the meeting, the CCP agents meticulously executed the killing plan," she added.

As per Zeng, on June 18, CCP agents "armed with silenced guns tracked Nijjar."

Pratt would go on to discuss this with at least 45 others,&nbsp;including 11 of his company's employees, 10 Australian officials, six journalists, and three former Australian prime ministers, reports ABC News, citing sources.

Quoting sources, the Times reports that Trump's disclosures "potentially endangered the US nuclear fleet."

Tibetan spiritual leader Dalai Lama has expressed grief over the tragedy that has befallen the northeastern Indian state of Sikkim.

Latest tolls show that the flash floods have claimed the lives of 14 people, while 102 people remain missing. As per reports, over 3,000 tourists are feared to be stranded in different parts of the state.

The 14th Dalai Lama, as per a press statement released on Wednesday (Oct 4th), expressed his grief over the loss of life and widespread damage to property.

A letter to Prem Singh Tamang, Chief Minister of Sikkim, read, "His Holiness the Dalai Lama expressed his sadness about the loss of life and widespread damage to property that has occurred in Sikkim as a result of the flash flood that took place in the Teesta River Valley last night."

"I offer my condolences to families who have lost loved ones…as well as others affected by this disaster, and pray for their welfare," wrote the Tibetan spiritual leader.

He also said that as a mark of his solidarity with the affected people, he has instructed the Dalai Lama Trust to extend financial aid towards relief and rescue efforts.

<h2>Latest toll</h2>

As per ANI, all the 14 people who lost their lives in the calamity were civilians. At least 102 people are missing, and over 3,000 are believed to be stranded. Around 12 to 14 workers who were working on the Teesta Stage 3 dam in Chungthang are among the missing.

"There are 12–14 workers still stranded in the tunnels of the dam. Collectively, across the State, 26 people have been reportedly injured and rushed to the hospitals. While 23 Army personnel in Bardang are still missing. They had a convoy vehicle which was parked adjacent to the highway which got submerged in the sludge," Sikkim Chief Secretary VB Pathak told media.

As per Pathak, on Tuesday night (Oct 3rd), Sikkim's Lhonak Lake "received a cloudburst around 10:42 pm."

"Thereafter, the lake breached its embankment and made its course towards the Teesta River. Soon different parts of the Teesta basin reported a rise in water, with particularly alarming levels in Chungthang where the Teesta Stage 3 dam was breached," he added.

One platoon of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) is already engaged in rescue efforts. The state government has requested three extra platoons. The request has been approved by the Indian central government.

On Thursday, US Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas in a notice in the US Federal Register said that there was "an acute and immediate need to construct physical barriers and roads in the vicinity of the border of the United States in order to prevent unlawful entries."&nbsp;

The new section of the Mexico wall, as per AFP, will be built in the Rio Grande Valley Sector of the US-Mexico border, which is a "high illegal entry" area, said Mayorkas. The Rio Grande Valley Sector, as per the US Homeland Security Secretary, has been the location of more than 245,000 illegal entrants this fiscal year.

<h2>Biden's stand on the wall</h2>

The day he took office in January 2021, Biden announced, "no more American taxpayer dollars be diverted to construct a border wall".

He also said there would be a review of all the resources that had already been committed.

He had proclaimed: "Building a massive wall that spans the entire southern border is not a serious policy solution."

After 'quietly' announcing the plans for the new addition to the pre-existing wall,&nbsp;Mayorkas said there was "no new Administration policy with respect to border walls. From day one, this Administration has made clear that a border wall is not the answer."

He added that the "additional physical barriers" will be funded for using an appropriation made by Congress for the purpose of this wall back in 2019 when Trump was still in office.

Back in May of this year, when the Title 42 law expired, the Biden administration also introduced tough new rule that requires migrants to make an appointment on a government-run smartphone app before approaching a legal port of entry.

Those going against the rule face a tougher bar for asylum if they cross the border illegally.

<h2>Trump claims victory</h2>

The Mexico border wall was former president Trump's signature policy. His first political campaign for president was known for its rally chant, "Build That Wall."

On Thursday, after the Biden administration's plans were announced, Trump was quick to claim victory and demand an apology.

Taking to his social media platform Truth Social, he said: "As I have stated often, over thousands of years, there are only two things that have consistently worked, wheels and walls!"&nbsp;

He also said that the Biden administration showed "I was right when I built 560 miles... of brand new, beautiful border wall."

"Will Joe Biden apologise to me and America for taking so long to get moving, and allowing our country to be flooded with 15 million illegals immigrants, from places unknown," he asked.

<h2>Illegal migrants: A burning issue in US</h2>

Illegal immigration has become a major political issue for Biden. Opposition Republicans have repeatedly accused the president of lax border policies.

Republican governors of states near the border say Biden is not doing enough to stop the crossings, and have even transported some arriving migrants to Democrat-controlled cities such as New York and Chicago.

This has now led to some Democratic leaders voicing criticism against Biden.

As per the Washington-based Migration Policy Institute, around 11 million immigrants have entered the US without legal documentation.

These include hundreds and thousands of Venezuelans fleeing economic and political turmoil at home.

To enter the US, they trek through a treacherous jungle region between Colombia and Panama known as the Darien Gap.

This high number of migrants has strained US cities at the border and further north, reports Reuters.

As per the US Department of Justice, there are around two million claims by illegal immigrants looking to extend their stay in the US pending in the immigration court.

<h2>Biting incidents: Some went unreported</h2>

As per reports, there are 11 known incidents of Commander biting the White House staff, including Secret Service agents. However, as per a CNN report from Wednesday (Oct 4), there were several more incidents that went unreported.

The most recent reported incident is from last month when the canine bit a Secret Service agent on White House Grounds.

There were 10 more similar incidents of the German Shepherd biting people between October 2022 and January 2023.

This information was uncovered by the Conservative legal activist group Judicial Watch, which obtained reports of incidents where Commander terrorised staff.&nbsp;

As per Internal Secret Service communications, as reported by the New York Post, on 3 November 2022, an officer landed in hospital after being bitten on the thigh and arm. The agent was referred to the hospital by the White House physician's office.

Daily Mail on Wednesday (Oct 4) published pictures of Commander allegedly biting White House grounds superintendent Dale Haney. The photos from a week ago were clicked by a tourist visiting the White House grounds.

The White House superintendent, as per an Axios, has denied reports that he was bitten by Commander.&nbsp;

On this, Elizabeth Alexander said: "We spoke to Dale about the picture, and he said that Commander was being playful, and there was no bite, no pressure of teeth on his skin, no mark — just some dog slobber."

Commander, aged two, was a gift to the US President from James and Sara Biden, his brother and sister-in-law. He first came to the White House on 20 December&nbsp;2021.

Donald Trump to be the next US House Speaker?

Rishi Sunak, the British prime minister, has proposed a peculiar way to create a 'smoke-free' generation. He wants to raise England's legal age for buying cigarettes by one year, every year. However, critics of the plan say it would just create a "black market."

Defending his plan, Sunak said in an interview with Radio 4: "Smoking is unequivocally the single biggest preventable cause of death, disability and illness."

"Our understanding is death caused by hypoxia due to a system fault on the submarine. The submarine hit a chain and anchor obstacle used by the Chinese Navy to trap US and allied submarines."

"This resulted in systems failures that took six hours to repair and surface the vessel. The onboard oxygen system poisoned the crew after a catastrophic failure," it adds.

<h2>China denies incident</h2>

Beijing, as per Daily Mail, has denied that such an incident took place. The nation has dismissed speculation as "completely false."&nbsp;Taiwan has also refuted internet reports.

However, the highly classified UK report insists that it happened.

Talking to the Daily Mail, a British submariner speculated: "It is plausible that this occurred and I doubt the Chinese would have asked for international support for obvious reasons."

"The risk assessment will be country agnostic, but we will take into account geopolitical factors to determine how severe those risks are," an EU official said.

The four technologies were chosen because they are considered highly likely to pose the most immediate risks.

However, the one recently captured by NASA, as per calculations based on the tornado's shadow, was about two&nbsp;kilometres (1.2 miles) in height — much taller than the average tornado the US experiences every year, and about five times the height of the US Empire State Building.

Lemmon, who is a member of the Perseverance science team, said, "Most are vertical columns. If this dust devil were configured that way, its shadow would indicate it is about 1.2 miles (2 kilometres) in height.”

The rover spotted the dust devil on a location nicknamed "Thorofare Ridge." It was about four kilometres or 2.5 miles away from the Perseverance Rover and was moving at a speed of about 19 kilometres per hour or 12mph.

As per estimates, its width was about 200 feet (or 60 metres).

The Malaysian department earlier had said that a regional meteorological agency identified nearly 250 "hotspots," that were indicative of fires on Sumatra and Borneo islands in Indonesia. However, none were detected within Malaysia.

Almost every dry season, thick smoke blankets the skies over the region, posing health risks and concerns for the tourism and aviation industries.

Wan Abdul Latiff Wan Jaffar, director of the Department of Environment in Malaysia recently, in a statement, reported a decline in air quality, particularly in the western part of Peninsular Malaysia. He said that in total, 11 areas recorded unhealthy Air Pollution Index (API) readings.

Furthermore, schools and kindergartens will be required to stop all outdoor activities when API readings reach 100. They will be closed when the API reaches 200.

Environmental organisation Greenpeace has called on countries in the region to enact legislation to hold plantation companies accountable for causing air pollution.&nbsp;

Heng Kiah Chun, regional campaign strategist for Greenpeace Southeast Asia, emphasised the need for a domestic transboundary haze act and said that enabling it "is necessary to act as a deterrent, especially as there are bad apples in the industry."

The democrat, as per a BBC report, was parking his vehicle about a mile or 1.5 kilometre away from the US Capitol, when three armed men stole his car.&nbsp;

Confirming the theft, Cuellar's Chief of Staff, Jacob Hochberg told AFP that "Three armed assailants approached the Congressman and stole his vehicle" as he was parking. The incident happened around 1:30 GMT (21:30 local time) in Washington's Navy Yard neighbourhood.

They initially sent the letter on July 10.

However, unsatisfied with the Pope's initial response, the five cardinals reworded their dubia and, citing "the gravity of the matter" sent it again on August 21.

Dubia is Latin for doubt and is an official request to a sitting pontiff. It seeks a simple "yes" or "no" response on disputed matters of Catholic teaching, practice and the running of the Church. &nbsp;&nbsp;

'Help from God'

"When you ask for a blessing, you are expressing a request for help from God, a prayer to be able to live better, a trust in a father who can help us live better," said the Pope in a letter released by the Vatican.

In the letter dated September 25, he also said that clergy must show "pastoral prudence, must adequately discern if there are forms of blessing requested by one or various people, which do not convey a wrong concept of marriage."&nbsp;

"We cannot be judges who only deny, reject, and exclude," he said.

However, he maintained that the&nbsp;Church still considered same-sex relationships "objectively sinful" and that same-sex marriages wouldn't be recognised.

Its executive director Maya Forstater called it "fantastic news," and remarked that "Undoing the damage (purportedly wrought by staff trans activists) will take years of concerted effort but will bring huge benefits for all patients and staff, most especially women."

Kagame has won international acclaim for presiding over peace and economic growth since the end of the 1994 genocide, in which an estimated 800,000 ethnic Tutsis and moderate Hutus were killed.

But he has faced mounting criticism for what human rights groups say are the suppression of political opposition and the muzzling of independent media.

Kagame has rejected these accusations.

Nine years after its wildly successful Mars Orbiter Mission (MOM), aka Mangalyaan, India is preparing to send another spacecraft to the red planet.

This was reported by Hindustan Times (HT) citing officials from the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO).

The Mars Orbiter Mission-2 or MOM-2 would reportedly carry four payloads. As per documents assessed by the news outlet, these payloads would contain scientific instruments that will study aspects of the barren planet, including interplanetary dust, the Martian atmosphere and the environment.

According to the mission document, payloads will include: a Mars Orbit Dust Experiment (MODEX), a Radio Occultation (RO) experiment, an Energetic Ion Spectrometer (EIS) and a Langmuir Probe and Electric Field Experiment (LPEX).

Speaking on condition of anonymity, an ISRO official told HT that "all of these payloads are in different stages of development."

"There are no measurements of Interplanetary Dust Particles (IDPs) at Mars. The instrument can detect particles of size from a few hundred nm to few µm, travelling at hypervelocity (&gt; 1 km/s). The outcomes can help explain the dust flux at Mars, whether there is any ring (as hypothesized) around Mars and also confirm whether the dust is interplanetary or coming from Phobos or Deimos (the two moons of Mars). The study of dust can help explain the RO experiment results," said the mission document.

Radio Occultation instrument will measure neutral and electron density profiles, reports HT. It will help understand the behaviour of the planet's atmosphere.

Finally, the Langmuir Probe and Electric Field Experiment (LPEX) will enable the measurement of electron number density, electron temperature and electric field waves — which will give a better picture of the plasma environment on Mars.

The previous Mangalyaan mission was India's first interplanetary mission, which made the nation only the fourth country to achieve Mars orbit, after Russia's ROSCOSMOS, the US's NASA and the European Space Agency.
