Jos Buttler's manic mayhem was matched in equal measure by spin twins Ravichandran Ashwin and Yuzvendra Chahal as Rajasthan Royals beat Mumbai Indians by 23 runs in an IPL match on Saturday.

Buttler (100 off 68 balls) scored his second IPL ton off only 66 balls to help the Royals to 193 for 8, which seemed slightly sub-par due to Jasprit Bumrah's (3/17 in 4 overs) brilliant effort.

Ishan Kishan (54 off 43 balls) and unheralded N Tilak Verma (61 off 33 balls) added 81 in 8 overs before Ashwin (1/30 in 4 overs) and Chahal (2/26 in 4 overs) decisively tilted the game in RR's favour between overs 14 to 16 as MI managed only 170 for 8 after 20 overs.

While Royals have now won two out of two, MI have lost both their games in another dismal start to an IPL season.

In the end, there were two factors that combined to bring about MI's downfall. 
Firstly, it was Buttler's (11 fours and five sixes) assault against MI's weak-links like Basil Thampi and Murugan Ashwin that made the difference.

Three such overs yielded 73 runs and even Bumrah's brilliance didn't seem to be enough in the final context of the match.

And then while bowling, in between overs 14 and 16, Chahal-Ashwin combination gave away only 16 runs and the chase was derailed.

In the last four overs also, Trent Boult (1 for 29 in four overs), Prasidh Krishna (1/37 in 4 overs) and Navdeep Saini (2/36 in 3 overs) kept things tight by not giving Kieron Pollard (22 off 24 overs) any room to free his arms.

All of them knowing Pollard's weakness against fast wide yorkers, bowled them aplenty to keep the West Indies white-ball skipper under tight leash.

If there was one plus point for MI, that will be young Tilak Verma, who could be the next big player for the franchise with his eye-catching elegance coupled with brute power.

The reverse swept six off Ashwin was brilliant but Tilak played one slog sweep too many to get out off the next ball.

Buttler played shots all round the park to bring up his second IPL hundred and first of the current edition. It was all the more praiseworthy as Yashashvi Jaiswal (1) and Devdutt Padikkal (7) were dismissed cheaply.

Skipper Sanju Samson (30 off 21 balls) played a good knock as he and Buttler conjured 82 runs for the third wicket.

A late cameo by Shimron Hetymar (35 off 14 balls; 3x4; 3x6) compounded the bowling team's woes.

Buttler, who was off the mark with a boundary to fine-leg and hit his first maximum, a pull shot over mid-wicket, off Daniel Sams (0/32), in the second over seemed on a rampage.

He tore into Basil Thampi's fourth over, hammering him for three maximums and two boundaries, as Rajasthan fetched 26 runs and raced to 43/1.

Buttler, who hit two successive boundaries off Sams, brought up his fifty in just 32 balls and then took the Mumbai Indians attack to task.

Rajasthan Royals (RR) opener Jos Buttler slammed the first century of the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 as he played a brilliant knock of 100 runs off 68 balls against Mumbai Indians (MI) on Saturday (April 02). Buttler looked in fine form as he took the MI bowlers to the cleaners during his stunning knock.

Buttler made a steady start before going after the MI bowlers. He went all out against Indian pacer Basil Thampi in the fourth over of the RR innings and slammed 26 runs off it. Thampi started the over with a dot ball before being smacked for a four on the next delivery.

Thus, at the post-match presentation, Danny Marrison tried putting Samson in a spot and asked him if he feels it is 'about time to get that IPL trophy back in the RR cabinet' this time around. Here's the predicted playing XI for RR ahead of their season-opener versus SRH:

Jos Buttler is very likely to open. Given his stature and ability to put the opposition on the back foot from ball one, he will continue to start at the top and is likely to be accompanied by Yashasvi Jaiswal or Padikkal. Jaiswal struck form in the second and final leg of IPL 2021 and, hence, can be preferred once again to open with Buttler. Padikkal has also opened for his previous franchise, i.e. Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB), but has played at No. 3 in his twin outings for India in the shortest format.

RR might like to remain flexible with the No. 3 spot. They might be temped to send either Samson or Padikkal depending on the situation (Samson for Buttler, Padikkal for Jaiswal, respectively).&nbsp;Hetmyer looks like a certain at No. 5, followed by the likes of James Neesham, Riyan Parag and the main bowlers.&nbsp;

Babar's opening partner and wicketkeeper Md Rizwan and Shaheen Afridi were a part of the list. Rizwan had a dream run in 2021 in the shortest format, ending with 1,326 runs in 29 matches with his skipper Babar being a distant second (with 939 runs). Shaheen, on the other hand, was impressive throughout the calendar year and ended with 23 wickets. He was also the Player-of-the-Match in Pakistan's first-ever victory over India in a World Cup clash (during the T20 WC).&nbsp;

Shamsi returned with a whopping 36 scalps, along with SL's Hasaranga.

The other players in the list are Bangladesh's Mustafizur Rahman (28 wickets in 2021) and Australia's pacer Josh Hazlewood. The latter played a key role in Aaron Finch-led Australia's maiden T20 WC win, finishing with 11 scalps in 7 games at an average of 15.91.

No Team India player made the cut in ICC Men's T20I team of 2021. The International Cricket Council (ICC), on Wednesday (January 19), announced the elite XI with Babar Azam named captain. Babar, who led Pakistan to the semi-finals of the 2021 T20 World Cup, has two more Men in Green players in the star-studded list. Babar's opening partner and wicketkeeper Md Rizwan and Shaheen Afridi were a part of the list. The team later said in a statement that both Stokes, who managed two half-centuries in the match despite the pain, and Bairstow, whose 113 is the only hundred by an Englishman so far in the series, would travel to Hobart where they would be assessed. 
England have added Sam Billings to their squad and the 30-year-old is currently isolating in the team hotel.

With Stuart Broad bowling the eighth over, after Australia elected to bat first, the experienced pacer dropped it short and towards the leg side of opener Marcus Harris. Harris got an edge and the ball flew towards the keeper as Buttler&nbsp;timed his dive towards the right and covered some distance to hold onto the catch.

The right-hand batter was retained for INR 140 million. On the other hand, Buttler and Jaiswal have been retained for INR 100 million and INR 40 million respectively.&nbsp;

Two big names, the England duo Ben Stokes and Jofra Archer, were released and the director of cricket, Kumar Sangakkara revealed the reason behind it. He said, "We had to take a lot of factors into consideration while making this decision and would have ideally liked to have gone with four players but the uncertainty surrounding Jofra's long term injury forced us to retain only three."

"Absolutely brilliant as a team man, brilliant in a leadership role. He just brings his amazing energy to the field. We had to consider the number of retentions possible. Player availability, in terms of how much of the tournament that a player is available for. It's the same with Jofra. We did everything to ascertain the nature of the injury, the recovery period," he added.&nbsp;

Sangakkara further said, "There hasn't been a phenomenon like Jofra Archer in any form of cricket, especially T20 cricket. Australia clinched their maiden T20 World Cup title after a dominant performance in the final where they chased down the target of 173 runs with seven balls to spare. David Warner, who slammed a match-winning 53 off 38 balls in the final, has been selected as an opener in the team of the tournament alongside England's Jos Buttler, who enjoyed a brilliant campaign.

The team of the tournament released by the ICC has been picked by a selection panel of commentators, international players and journalists. Pakistan skipper Babar Azam has been named the captain of the side. Babar had a fabulous tournament on the personal front as he finished as the highest run-getter with 303 runs from 6 matches and led Pakistan to five wins in five matches in the Super 12 before their exit from the semi-finals.

Warner, who was also named the Player of the Tournament, scored 289 runs and finished as the second-highest run-getter behind Babar. While his opening partner Buttler notched up 269 runs in the tournament. Sri Lanka's Charith Asalanka was picked at no.4 for his heroics with the bat. Asalanka amassed 231 runs in the tournament including match-winning half-centuries against West Indies and Bangladesh.

South Africa's Aiden Markram slotted in at no.5 for his vital contributions in the middle-order for the Proteas. England's Moeen Ali and Sri Lanka's Wanindu Hasaranga are the two all-rounders who have been selected in the team of the tournament by the ICC. Hasaranga topped the wicket-taking charts with 16 wickets while Moeen picked up seven wickets and scored 92 runs for England.

Jos Buttler played a sensational knock of unbeaten 71 as England thrashed Australia by eight wickets in their Super 12 clash of the ongoing T20 World Cup 2021 in Dubai on Sunday. Buttler was in brilliant touch as he single-handedly took the Australian bowling apart to power his side to a convincing victory and retain the top spot in Group 2.

Buttler's 32-ball 71 was filled with some extraordinary strokes all around the ground including a six off left-arm pacer Mitchell Starc which was sent out of the park. It was a huge six from the right-hander, who connected well and sent the ball over the stadium roof for a maximum.

Former Australia cricketer Shane Watson, who is currently commentating during the T20 World Cup 2021, mistook the ball hit by Buttler for the moon during commentary. Watson confused the ball for the moon when the replay of Buttler's six was played.

“Isn’t that incredible, the beauty of the earth that we live on,” Watson said on-air looking at the footage of the ball before being corrected by his fellow commentator. The clip of Watson's error soon went viral on social media.
