Flydubai cockpit attack: Could Israel lose its US Visa Waiver status over security lapse?

Israel’s ambassador to India has hit out at some West Asian and Western media outlets for mischaracterising the Flydubai flight terror incident as an “altercation” between pilots, saying the incident was a reminder that “suicidal hatred” against his country can take many forms. Reuven Azar made the remarks while commemorating three years since the 7 October 2023 terror attack by Hamas, which he described as “the most atrocious terrorist attack against our nation since the establishment of the State of Israel”. “Last week we shared the frustration of seeing again disinformation campaigns and attempts of some West Asian and Western Media outlets to categorise the flydubai terrorist attack as an ‘altercation’,” he said. “These are the same outlets which are hasty to blame us for every accusation made by dubious elements until proven wrong, and many times even after being proven wrong.” The flight, FZ1073 from Dubai to Tel Aviv, was diverted to Saudi Arabia on 30 September after the aircraft plunged thousands of feet. The co-pilot, identified as an Omani citizen, attacked the Indian captain with an emergency axe and tried to seize the controls. The United Arab Emirates’ attorney general has said the co-pilot attempted a “terrorist act”. Azar credited the outcome to the Indian captain and passengers on board. “Only last week we witnessed a stark reminder that suicidal hatred against our state can come in many ways, and thanks to a brave Indian pilot, Captain Smit Machchhar and brave Israeli passengers, we averted a 9/11 style mega terrorist attack,” he said. Captain Machchhar, who was seriously injured, has said he opened the cockpit door while the aircraft was descending so that others could enter. Israeli passengers subdued the attacker; two people with flying experience helped stabilise the Boeing 737, which landed safely. From 2019 to August 2026, Israel has spent nearly $470,000 on hair styling, makeup, and official representation expenses for its prime ministers both domestically and abroad. The data were revealed by the 'Israeli' Prime Minister's Office after a Freedom of Information request was filed in December 2025 by attorney Yaara Winkler-Shalit. The report indicated that Benjamin Netanyahu and his wife Sara were responsible for approximately 90 per cent of the total hair and makeup expenditures. In multiple documents, specific details, including the prime minister's personal hairstylists' and makeup artists' names, were redacted on grounds of alleged "state security". The data gave specific monthly breakdowns, along with the period surrounding the outbreak of war in late 2023. It revealed that the state paid nearly $2,600 for the prime minister's hair styling and $1,580 for makeup services between September and November in 2023. Also read: 25 years after 9/11: How America and world remembered nearly 3,000 lives lost - IN PICS Records show that in October 2023 alone, $810 was spent specifically on the prime minister's hair styling. Tensions have sharply escalated along the Israel-Lebanon border after Israeli airstrikes hit several areas across southern Lebanon, killing at least four people and injuring 20 others, according to Lebanon’s Health Ministry. Two women were killed in Arab Salim, while two more people were killed in Nabatieh al-Fawqa. Several other areas, including Nabatieh and Kfar Remman, were also hit.

Israel said the strikes were carried out after Hezbollah launched two explosive-laden drones toward Israeli forces operating inside what Israel calls a security zone in southern Lebanon. The Israeli military described the drone attack as a violation and said its strikes targeted Hezbollah-linked sites.

Lebanese President Joseph Aoun condemned the latest attacks and urged the United States and the international community to intervene and help halt the Israeli strikes. Aoun described the escalation as dangerous and accused Israel of targeting civilian and state infrastructure.

Turkey-Israel tensions are intensifying as Ankara delivers a strong response to Israeli criticism of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

Turkish officials have reaffirmed Ankara’s support for the Palestinian cause while accusing the Israeli government of targeting Erdogan with what they described as lies and slander. Turkish officials also sharply criticised the language used by Israel’s foreign ministry and accused the Netanyahu government of escalating tensions across the region.

The latest war of words comes amid growing friction between Turkey and Israel over Syria. Israel has carried out strikes on Syrian military infrastructure, while concerns have grown over Turkey’s reported plans involving personnel, drones and air defence systems in northern Syria.

The confrontation has added another layer to the wider West Asia crisis, with both Turkey and Israel increasingly viewing each other as strategic challenges.

The political timing is also significant, with Israel heading toward a general election. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has long built his political image around national security, and Turkey is increasingly featuring in Israel’s political and security debate.

The escalating rivalry raises a major question: could Syria become a new front in the wider West Asia conflict?

ISRAEL POLICE RECRUITMENT: The number of Arab citizens, particularly Muslims, joining the Israel Police has fallen sharply during Itamar Ben-Gvir's four years as national security minister, even as overall police recruitment has increased.

According to data from Israel's Ministry of National Security and the Israel Police, 135 Muslims joined the force in 2022, rising to 165 in 2023, before falling to 143 in 2024 and 96 in 2025.

The decline also extends to other Arab communities. Arab Christian recruitment fell from 48 recruits in 2022 to 12 in 2025, while Bedouin recruitment remained very low, dropping from six recruits in 2022 to two in 2025.

The figures stand out against a broader increase in police recruitment, with thousands of new officers reportedly joining the force in recent years.

Officials have pointed to changes in recruitment requirements, including minimum aptitude scores and Hebrew-language requirements. A previous policy had allowed some Arab candidates to meet different requirements aimed at increasing representation, but that policy was abolished after Ben-Gvir took office.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has sparked fresh controversy after referring to Britain as the “Islamic Republic of Britain” during a podcast appearance.

Netanyahu was discussing Britain’s historic relationship with Israel and the legacy of Winston Churchill when he contrasted the country’s past position with what he described as a changing political climate in Europe.

He also suggested that several European countries have shifted their approach towards Israel, particularly amid disagreements over the war in Gaza and Israel’s wider regional policies.

Netanyahu further referred to the possibility of a nuclear-armed Islamic republic, saying that, in his view, Britain could become one before Iran. The remarks are likely to attract attention in London and across Europe, where governments have increasingly expressed concerns over the Gaza conflict while maintaining complex diplomatic relationships with Israel.

Tensions between Israel and Syria continue to focus on the strategically important Golan Heights, as both sides remain locked in a dispute over territory and security.

Israel captured most of the Golan Heights from Syria in the 1967 war and later extended its laws and administration over the area. The United Nations and most of the international community continue to regard the territory as occupied Syrian land.

The situation has become more complicated since the collapse of Bashar al-Assad’s government in December 2024, when Israeli forces moved into the UN-patrolled buffer zone and expanded their military presence in southern Syria.

The latest developments come amid wider efforts to determine the future of Israel-Syria relations, with the Golan Heights remaining one of the most sensitive territorial issues in any potential agreement.

According to reports, mediators in Cairo have proposed a framework under which Hamas would gradually surrender its weapons, while Israeli forces would withdraw in phases. However, Israel has not fully endorsed the proposal, insisting that there will be no military withdrawal until Gaza is completely demilitarized.

Hamas has responded by saying that any handover of its heavy weapons will depend on Israel ending its military operations, withdrawing its forces, and committing to a permanent ceasefire. The proposed agreement also includes an international stabilization force and a new Palestinian police structure to oversee Gaza's future security.
