Lebanese authorities have arrested a man accused of spying for Israel and allegedly infiltrating Hezbollah's internal network in what investigators describe as one of the most significant intelligence breaches faced by the Iran-backed group in recent years. According to Lebanese investigators, the suspect allegedly provided highly sensitive intelligence that helped Israel identify and target several senior Hezbollah military commanders during 2024, including Fouad Shukur and Ibrahim Akil. Officials say the suspect maintained close access to Hezbollah's leadership and reportedly met individuals linked to Israel's Mossad intelligence agency during trips to Turkey before passing information about targets in Beirut.

Despite a fragile ceasefire, tensions remain elevated between Israel and Lebanon as both sides continue to exchange accusations over violations and military activity near the border. The truce has helped prevent a wider conflict, but fears of renewed escalation persist amid ongoing security concerns and regional instability.

The situation remains closely watched by international observers, with growing concerns that any miscalculation could reignite hostilities between Israel and Hezbollah.

Tensions Remain High Between Israel And Lebanon

Fighting between Israel and Hezbollah continues despite a nominal ceasefire, with fresh strikes and evacuation orders heightening tensions. Israel has urged residents to leave parts of Nabatiyeh in southern Lebanon, while reports suggest U.S. President Donald Trump expressed anger over the latest escalation. The developments have raised concerns about the risk of a wider regional conflict.

During the attack by Hamas on Israel, both jumped out of the window of their home and ran in separate directions after Palestinian terrorists shot at their door. Later, Gritzewsky was captured, and gunmen seized her to put between two men on a motorcycle and covered her head and face. Her captors later confirmed that Zangauker was also a hostage.
Greeted with sticks, rocks, & pipes
Matan Zangauker told Channel 12 in November that he was greeted by “children, women, old people, lined up with sticks, with rocks, with pipes, and they started to hit me, to beat me" while he was driven into Gaza on a motorcycle on October 7. Zangauker said the first Israeli he encountered in the tunnels that day was the body of a dead IDF soldier, with his captors warning that he would meet the same fate. He was later held alongside Yocheved Lifshitz, also from Nir Oz, who was abducted on October 7 and released weeks later, while her husband, Oded Lifshitz, died in captivity. He said he was frequently moved between locations, largely within the tunnel network, and was sometimes held with other hostages and at other times alone. Despite being a civilian, Zangauker said his captors treated him as a soldier, subjecting him to beatings and food deprivation. He also said his captors used psychological pressure, feeding him false claims about their supposed battlefield gains against the Israeli military. After nearly two months in captivity, Gritzewsky was released in November 2023. Zangauker stated that he was unaware that Ilana had also been taken captive and believed she had managed to hide after they separated. He said he only learned of her abduction when he was permitted to watch television on November 30, the day she was released.

Co-developed by Israel's Rafael Advanced Defence Systems and Elbit Systems, it is a high-powered, 100-kilowatt laser-based weapon system that has already completed successful trials against projectiles, including missiles, drones, mortars, and aircraft.According to Israel's Defence Ministry, laser interception is much cheaper at $5 each, a negligible amount compared to the missile, which costs around $50,000 each. Read Also: Top 10 biggest warships in the world: From WWII’s Yamato to modern supercarriers Lasers, weapons like Iron Beam, use concentrated beams of photons to deliver the destructive effect at the speed of light. The head of the Middle East Bureau at the Israel Foreign Ministry, Jonathan Zadka, has said that his country would like to join the India-Middle East-Europe Corridor (IMEC) officially as it looks to engage with countries in Asia, especially India. Speaking to WION’s Sidhant Sibal in Jerusalem, Jonathan Zadka said, “Our discussion with India and other partners in different capacities of the IMEC is happening in an ongoing manner most of the time.”IMEC was announced in New Delhi on the sidelines of the G20 Summit in India in 2023, and since then some segments of the mega connectivity corridor have seen work being undertaken. But the ongoing West Asia conflict has impacted parts of the corridor. On being asked about the delay, he said, “It would be important for this to be put on the fast pace.” He was optimistic about the future of the Abraham Accords that saw normalisation of ties between Israel and some Arab countries. Zadka was earlier the Consul General of Israel in Bengaluru.

Sidhant Sibal: What is Israel’s view about the India Middle East Europe Corridor?Jonathan Zadka: So the IMEC element is a key cornerstone in any regional architecture that we see. The fact that IMEC would be a way for us to engage better with countries in Asia, mainly with India, throughout the Middle East and via Israel to Europe and then to the United States, is a key element that we aspire to. Hopefully, I think soon, we will be able to see a way forward in which what I make is actually taking root and established in a more concrete manner. Sidhant Sibal: What kind of conversations have you had with India over the IMEC? You’re not officially part of the IMEC. So when does Israel plan to become a member of IMEC?Jonathan Zadka: Israel is not a member of IMEC, but is mentioned in the IMEC MOU, especially the Haifa port. Our discussion with India and other partners in different capacities of the IMEC is happening in an ongoing manner most of the time, and hopefully we will be able to join the IMEC soon, with the help of the other signers to the MOU. Sidhant Sibal: The pace of IMEC is still very slow. It’s not fast, particularly when it comes to this part of the world, primarily because of the ongoing conflict, how much that has been an impediment, and also the normalisation process with Saudi Arabia. Do you think that that is also an impediment when it comes to speeding up the entire corridor, the connectivity project?Jonathan Zadka: I think when it comes to the IMEC, it carries many, many forms. It is a matter of physical route. It could be an element that carries out transportation elements, energy, data, ideas, and many other scope of elements. And for us, it would be important for this to be put on the fast pace. We would first want to be joined officially to the IMEC and then later on, I think we will be able to carry different avenues of cooperation, from India through Israel to other countries. Hopefully this would coincide with the enlargement of normalisation and better processes in the Middle East, including the extension of the Abraham Accords. Sidhant Sibal: Summing it up on Abraham Accords, what’s the update like? Are you looking at more countries joining the Abraham Accords? And we have seen the Abraham Accords surviving the current situation in West Asia that emerged after the 7th of October terror attack.Jonathan Zadka: The key important issue is that the Abraham Accords is very much present. It is a strategic, it manifests the strategic decision by the different partners for them to join together by the Abraham Accords to think about a better future for everybody. Hopefully this would be larger in scope as sooner than later. The reporter was in Israel at the invitation of the Israeli embassy in New Delhi.

A freshwater lake in Israel has turned red, causing panic among people in the nearby areas. The Sea of Galilee has taken on a strange hue over the past few days. The lake is a popular tourist attraction in Israel, especially among Christian pilgrims who visit the country to see the places Jesus set foot it. Several people also love taking a dip in the lake. However, the red colour has caused a scare in the region. The Water Ministry inspected the lake and cleared it as being safe. It also revealed the reason for the lake turning red. A green algae called Botryococcus braunii is thriving in the lake, giving it a new colour. The green algae have turned the water red. As strange as it sounds, officials say there is a simple explanation for it. According to the ministry, the algae produce a natural pigment when exposed to sunlight, which gets accumulated in certain portions of the lake. It is red in colour, lending the lake a mysterious hue. Officials also tested the waters to check for safety and assured people that the water in the Sea of Galilee is perfectly fine. The Water Authority will continue to monitor the water quality and whether it is affecting the ecosystem in the lake. The sudden tinge in Israel's national lake caused panic. This alga Botryococcus braunii, belongs to the Chlorophyta group and produces carotenoid pigments. The algae have also been studied many times and is known to produce large amounts of hydrocarbons, making them a promising candidate for biofuel production. Israel has also witnessed such coloured water in the past. In 2022, the water in some villages and freshwater sinkholes in the Dead Sea area turned red. At the time also the algae were also found to be blooming in these areas.
Climate change and algae blooms in seas
Algae blooms are becoming common across the globe because of global warming. As the temperature of oceans rises, it creates the perfect conditions for the algae to bloom. The heat from the Sun, along with nutrient concentrations, like phosphorus and nitrogen, triggers the algae to grow and spread in the waters. This is what has happened in the Sea of Galilee also. While the algae do not affect human health, they are a problem for the large ecology of the seas. The sheet of algae prevents sunlight from penetrating deep into the waters, affecting those lifeforms several feet below the surface that depend on it for survival. Later, when the algae die and decompose, they depelete the dissolved oxygen in the water, a phenomenon known as hypoxia.

Since October 7, following the Hamas attack on Israel, which claimed the lives of 1,160 victims, images of the massacre flooded across the news outlets and social media. Israel has accused Hamas on several occasions of spreading false information regarding its war to make it seem like a genocide. But gradually, the West and even the US are agreeing that the aforementioned war bore the imprints of ethnic cleansing. Here are the top 10 claims made by Israeli officials or the IDF since October 7 that have been challenged, debunked or questioned by journalists or rights groups

40 Beheaded babies - In the aftermath of the Hamas attack, a rumour surfaced which claimed that 40 babies were beheaded in the Kfar Aza Kibbutz. The rumour originated with reports from Israeli commanders and members of civilian rescue groups who were interviewed by i24NEWS journalist Nicole Zedeck at the site. The Israeli government's press office, when contacted by French outlet Le Monde, said there were no decapitated babies. When CNN visited the location did not find any evidence of a beheaded youth, and the IDF did not release any pictures of the attack.

The war is all about hostages- The Israeli Government has repeatedly claimed that the war is all about the hostages, it's all about getting them home. Multiple reports suggest that Hamas have offered the release of all civilian hostages by October 9 and 10, on the condition that the Israeli military will not enter the Gaza Strip and release all the Palestinian prisoners. Israel rejected that offer and determined to go ahead with the military campaign to dismantle Hamas. Israeli ministers keep saying again and again that hostages are not their priority.

Hamas headquarter in Al-Shifa hospital- The IDF have claimed that Al-Shifa hospital, the largest hospital in Gaza, hosts a major command centre of Hamas, and it uses this infrastructure to carry out its operations, and these claims were used to explain the attack on the hospital. The United States, particularly the White House and its intelligence, have supported these claims, claiming that they have proof Hamas uses Al-Shifa hospital and other hospitals have been used as a command centre by Hamas. The evidence provided by the IDF is inconclusive. Media outlets such as CNN, AP, The Guardian and Al Jazeera questioned the evidence provided by the IDF, such as Weaponry & Equipment and images and videos of tunnels. The tunnel found had no direct links with the hospital. The videos showing tunnels didn't fully prove the initial claims, and one report concluded that rooms connected to a tunnel network showed "no immediate evidence of military use by Hamas"

4.Hamas misfired the Al-Ahli hospital rocket- Israel have been accused of attacking Al-Alhil hospital, it claimed that Islamic Jihad rocket misfired and heat the hospital. Initial report criticised IDF, the Israeli military presented ,audio and video evidence — some of which was later found to be questionable or out of context.5. Hamas stealing the aid- The Israeli government, Netanyahu himself, has repeatedly accused Hamas of stealing aid going into Gaza. But according to The New York Times, the Israeli Military officials have found no proof of that, and even USAID analysis found no evidence of aid diversion by Hamas.6. Safe Zones for Civilians- Israel designated safe zones for babies and children to flee, but in reality, it bombed those same areas it called safe zones.7. We don’t target Civilians- The IDF repeatedly targeted civilians and children. As of mid-2025, approximately 40,000 women and children have been killed. According to the UN and NGO, entire families and neighbourhoods have been wiped out.8. UNRWA collaborated with Hamas- Israel alleged that UNRWA is a front for Hamas, which led to the funding cut of UNRWA from the US and other countries. The Wall Street Journal have admitted that Israeli claims lacked solid evidence.9. 'We don't use Human shields, Hamas uses civilians as shields'- IDF claimed that Hamas uses human shields by hiding in civilian areas, the IDF have never used human shields. Multiple reports show that the IDF takes Palestinian hostages and uses them as human shields.

“He told me to take them. In the next attack, use them as a human shield.” An IDF soldier and five former Palestinian detainees tell CNN that the Israeli military has used civilians as human shields in Gaza, as @JDiamond1 reports. pic.twitter.com/o49EZNtTXS— Christiane Amanpour (@amanpour) October 24, 2024

10. Massacre denial- Israel has been repeatedly accused of killing aid workers and people seeking aid. IDF have repeatedly denied these allegations, except Sky News investigation found that on March 23, 2025, five aid workers were killed. CNN investigation found that more than 100 aid seekers were killed, and more than 400 were injured. Hamas too have made lots of unverified claims. Israel has accused international media of bias while journalists accuse Israel of not allowing free access to Gaza.

Since the start of Israel's attack on Gaza, there have been numerous claims made by the IDF on several occasions to pose its campaign as just. Here are the top 10 Israeli claims that have been challenged and debunked by international media.

Here are the top 10 claims made by Israeli officials or the IDF since October 7 that have been challenged, debunked or questioned by journalists or rights groups 40 Beheaded babies - In the aftermath of the Hamas attack, a rumour surfaced which claimed that 40 babies were beheaded in the Kfar Aza Kibbutz.

Since the start of Israel's war on Gaza, there have been numerous claims made by the IDF on several occasions to pose its campaign as just. Here are the top 10 Israeli claims that have been challenged and debunked by international media.

10 widely reported and controversial claims by Israel since the start of Gaza war in October 7

Human trafficking gangs taking advantage of the war and frequent pauses in international flights have begun trafficking women via the Jordan route to Israel. These groups promise high-paying jobs of NIS 65,000 monthly and luxurious living in Israel, but they are eventually forced into prostitution and subjected to abuse. According to an investigative report by the Israeli outlet N12, official Jordan border points like the Sheikh Hussein Bridge are the route most used by the traffickers. The victims are mostly taken from countries like Palestine, Eastern European countries, or African countries that are war-torn and facing extreme poverty. According to a report by the Assaf Association, an Aid organisation for refugees and asylum seekers in Tel Aviv and Jerusalem, about 850 Ukrainian women have been forced into prostitution since the beginning of the Russian invasion. An excerpt of the chat as reported by N12, “Right now, you can only enter through Jordan,” a trafficker posing as a recruiter told a Russian woman on Telegram, "You will need to purchase plane tickets to Jordan. We will finance a six-day stay in a hotel in Amman, which costs approximately $500, and we will also cover the cost of food and transportation to Israel. You must have at least $1,000 to cross the border." In a similar incident in 2024, five South African women were rescued in Jerusalem and Tel Aviv. They had been trafficked through Jordan, under the guise of pilgrims. Once in Israel, they endured imprisonment, physical abuse, and were coerced into prostitution. Some of the survivors reportedly live on minuscule wages in Bat Yam, a neighbourhood in the south of Tel Aviv, known for its Russian communities. With the increased enforcement at the Egyptian border, trafficking rings are pushed to the Jordanian route. There are ads written in Russia that claim an 80 per cent success rate of crossing the Jordan border, and others bragging about having no issues with the security forces at the Jordan border. In March 2025, an Indian national, Thomas Gabriel Perera, was killed while attempting to cross the Jordanian border. He had reportedly been offered a job in Israel by a fellow Indian national working in Jordan with a monthly salary of approximately NIS 14,550. In the case of the South African Women, ‘one woman was thrown naked into the street’ for perceived underperformance. Many report confiscation of documents, restricted movement, psychological trauma, and isolation from support systems. There had been numerous documented cases of Palestinians being trafficked from the West Bank and Gaza to Israel. In January 2024, an IDF soldier was among 14 Israelis accused of trafficking Palestinian women into Israel. According to a report by the US Department of State, since October 7, the resulting displacement of residents in areas around Gaza, NGOs have reported the increased vulnerability of children to exploitation, including sex trafficking.According to a report by Israel's justice ministry from 2020 to 2024, 326 official victims of trafficking were recognised, among them, 71 per cent were women, 40 per cent were sexually exploited, and 44 per cent endured slavery. Israel has laws against trafficking, like the 2006 Anti-trafficking law, which prevents human trafficking for labour and sex work. But the enforcement had been particularly feeble. Between 2017–2021, 789 investigations were launched, but only 155 indictments were filed. The anti-trafficking police unit was disbanded in 2011, significantly weakening the oversight.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has lost the decisive parliamentary majority, with the departure of major ultra-Orthodox allies. This means that there is a strong possibility of early elections, although not immediately. United Torah Judaism, led by Degel HaTorah and Agudat Yisrael factions with 7 seats, and the Shas Aryeh Deri with 11 seats, recently left the coalition, reducing the number of coalition seats to a mere 49 seats in the Knesset of 120 seats. Yet new elections are not imminent. The government will fall only if there is a key vote on any issue, particularly disbanding the Knesset. If those parties do not join such a vote, that would bring down the government; it would not matter. The Knesset will be back from its break in October, thus giving an appropriate window of time for Netanyahu. As of now, it could hold indefinitely as a minority government.
Who is Yuli Edelstein? Netanyahu will 'do anything to stay in power': Is Israel looking at another election?

The Israeli Defence Forces (IDF) on Saturday (July 27) said that its drone strike in southern Lebanon has killed a top Hezbollah commander identified as Ali Abed al-Qader Ismail. The IDF said that it launched a drone strike in Lebanon's Bint Jbeil area and killed Ismail, who was involved in efforts to restore Hezbollah's capabilities. It also added that Ismail's activities “constituted a blatant violation of the understandings between Israel and Lebanon.” The IDF also declared that it will continue to remove "any threat posed to the State of Israel." This marks the third attack on a Hezbollah terrorist in Bint Jbeil sector within the past week.

The man “was involved in efforts to rehabilitate the terrorist organization in the Bint Jbeil area of southern Lebanon and operated to recruit terrorists during the war,” a military statement said. On Thursday, Israel said it had struck Hezbollah weapons depots and a rocket launcher, and “eliminated a Hezbollah terrorist” in Lebanon’s south. Lebanon said it was in violation of the November truce reached between Israel and Lebanon. Under the truce, Hezbollah was to withdraw its fighters north of the Litani river, about 30 kilometers (20 miles) from the Israeli border, leaving Lebanon’s army and United Nations peacekeepers as the only armed parties in the region. Israel was to withdraw its troops from Lebanon. However, Lebanon claims that Israeli troops continue to be present in as many as five areas.
Israel-Lebanon tensions
Israel doubled down its attack on Lebanese militant group Hezbollah after the October 7 Hamas attack. It led to the Israeli invasion of Lebanon in 2024, which was the biggest escalation of tensions between the two countries after the 2006 Lebanon War. Tensions escalated in 2024 when Isarel killed key Hezbollah leaders Hassan Nasrallah, and his successor, Hashem Safieddine. IN November 2024, a ceasefire agreement was reached between Hezbollah and Israel. The ceasefire is being monitored by a panel of five countries, led by the United States, though Israel retains the right to strike at immediate threats in Lebanon during this period. The ceasefire was extended to 18 February 2025.

Amid the rising tensions between Israel and Iran, a US envoy at a UN Security Council meeting on Friday stumbled and accidentally blamed Jerusalem for spreading "chaos, terror and suffering" in the Middle East before realising her mistake. The US Chargé d'Affaires ad interim to the UN, Dorothy Shea, was giving a speech during the UNSC, condemning Iran's activities against Israel. "Israel's government has also spread chaos, terror and suffering throughout the region," Shea reads out. Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump will be making a decision on joining Israel in attacking Iran or not, in two weeks as the war between Israel and Iran continues for a week now with Israel attacking Tehran's nuclear facilities and military officials. During White House briefing, spokesperson Karoline Leavitt said that trump will “make a decision on whether to attack Iran within two weeks.” "Based on the fact that there's a substantial chance of negotiations that may or may not take place with Iran in the near future, I will make my decision whether or not to go within the next two weeks," Trump said in a statement read out by his press secretary, Karoline Leavitt. The White House added that “correspondence has continued with Iran.” An Israeli official on Thursday told The Times of Israel that it expects that US President Donald Trump will join the strikes against Iran’s nuclear program. “The expectation is that they join, but no one is pushing them,” says the official. “They have to make their own decision.”“We’ll know in the next 24-48 hours,” the official estimated, before the White House said that the US president will decide in the next two weeks.

Oops! US envoy accidentally blames Israel for ‘chaos and terror’ at UN- WATCH

She then takes an awkward pause, shakes her head as she quickly corrects herself and repeats the sentence, “Iran's government has also spread chaos, terror and suffering throughout the region.” She continues with her speech, “Let us not forget that the Iranian government was an enabling and ideological material force behind Hamas's deadly assault on Israel.” This slip-up by the senior US diplomat on a stage as large as the United Nations Security Council went viral on social media. Sri Lanka has welcomed the Indian announcement on evacuation of Sri Lankan nationals from Iran as the West Asia crisis intensifies. Speaking to WION's Sidhant Sibal, Arun Hemachandra, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Sri Lanka said, that this "This gesture exemplifies the spirit of regional solidarity and trusted friendship that our nationals have built over decades". This is not the first time India has evacuated nationals from neighbouring countries during a crisis. During the 2022 Operation Ganga evacuation from Ukraine, India had evacuated foreign nationals from neighbouring countries like Nepal, Bangladesh and Pakistan. During 2020, evacuation from Wuhan, China during the outbreak of COVID, India evacuated Maldives nationals. The Sri Lankan Deputy Foreign minister hoped that the situation in west Asia will come to normal soon. Full Interview: Indian mission in Tehran has announced that they will help in evacuation of Sri Lankan nationals. If you can give your reaction to this?Arun Hemachandra: Well, in light of the rapidly escalating situation in the region, I wish to express my deep appreciation to the Government of India for their timely and generous assistance in facilitating the evacuation of Sri Lankan nationals from the Islamic Republic of Iran. Under Operation Sindhu, not only Indian citizens were brought to safety, but the Indian authorities also extended their helping hand to Sri Lankans and other South Asian nationals. This gesture exemplifies the spirit of regional solidarity and trusted friendship that our nationals have built over decades. Sir, perhaps if you can talk about the number of Sri Lankan nationals in Iran to give a broader view to us, and I believe that the Sri Lankan government also announced last week that you are moving your embassy to north of Iran?Arun Hemachandra: Due to the tensions seen in the region, we took a decision to shift the embassy from Iran to the northern part of Iran. And overall, there are 30 plus Sri Lankans living in Iran, as per the statistics that we have, including the embassy staff. So we are grateful, once again, to India's External Affairs Ministry and Indian Embassy in Tehran for their proactive coordination and the care they extended. What is the Sri Lankan stance of the West Asian crisis? If you can put in perspective. Arun Hemachandra: The primary motive at the moment is the safety of Sri Lankan citizens, those who are in Israel as well as Iran. So we are looking forward to making sure that each and every Sri Lankan citizen is protected and safeguarded. And in terms of the bilateral relationship, we do have relationships with both nations. And so we are really watching this situation, and then we hope there will be normalcy very soon.

The war between Israel and Iran is being very expensive. Billions of rupees are spent each day on air defense equipment, which has caused a weapons shortage. Having spent $67 billion on the Gaza campaign, the cost of the war with Iran is also escalating day by day.The conflict with Iran is costing Israel very dearly. On one hand, Israeli weapons are being destroyed and on the other, billions of rupees are being used up in intercepting Iranian missiles and drones. The catch is that Israel does not possess sufficient air defense missiles to wage the war against Iran for an extended period. But during the shortage of weapons, America has again assisted and weapons were delivered to Israel in 14 cargo planes. Each blast not only destroys things but also squanders crores of rupees. It doesn't matter whether Israel bombs Iran or defends itself against Iran's attack, the war costs are mounting with each blast. Israel is spending 17 billion rupees each day on air defense systems alone. Israel's Arrow Air Defense missile costs about 16 crores. David Sling missiles cost about 8 crores. Now whether it is Iran's suicide drones or ballistic missiles, crores of rupees worth missiles are being launched daily from Israeli air defense. Billions of rupees have been spent by Israel in the war with Gaza and Iran. In 2024, Israel incurred an expenditure of 67 billion dollars in the Gaza operation. Now Israel is spending around six thousand crores rupees daily in the ongoing conflict with Iran. Over Rs 2500 crore alone is being spent on fuel and weapons daily. Israel's Finance Ministry says that when one lakh soldiers are deployed, approximately Rs 270 crore is incurred on their salaries and arrangements daily. Despite such massive expenditure, Israel has a massive lack of air defense. Yet, as per a new report, another stockpile of weapons has been dispatched to Israel by America once again. 14 cargo planes have arrived in Israel. America and Germany have sent weapons. 800 cargo planes have arrived in Israel after the Gaza operation. Details of the weapons carried by cargo planes are unknown but Israel's air defense is thought to be strengthened. As per American news reports, Israel is employing Arrow-3 missiles. There could be an enormous lack of Arrow-3 missiles in the future times. Iran's ballistic missiles will not be intercepted in the future. The issue of worry for America is that if the war against Iran prolongs for a long duration, then how will Israel be saved. The US is also deploying more Navy to give Israel aerial protection from Iran. Now, drones are being intercepted by fighter aircraft as well as air defense, but air-to-air missiles are utilized for that. If Iran keeps on launching drones attacks, then Israel will also run low on air-to-air missiles by a great deal.

Every blast burns billions: Israel struggles to keep pace amid conflict with Iran

After spending $67 billion on the Gaza operation, the expenditure on the war with Iran is also increasing continuously

In the early part of 2003, American Army rumbled over the Kuwait border into Iraq in the name of liberation. The pretext: weapons of mass destruction, regime change, and freedom for the Iraqi people. Within a matter of weeks, Baghdad had fallen. Saddam Hussein had been toppled; his regime destroyed. But as history would soon reveal, over-throwing a government was the simple part. What ensued was decades of sectarian strife, insurgencies, foreign interventions, and a region thrown into disarray. Now, with Israel bombarding Iranian military and nuclear facilities and the threat of American intervention hanging over it, the world is asking an all-too-familiar and foreboding question: Is America about to revive 2003 in Tehran? The Iran-Israel war that has broken out has spread much beyond covert attacks and proxy tensions. In what Israel called as ‘Operation Rising Lion’, its fighter jets have initiated prolonged air bombardment operations above Tehran, Natanz, Esfahan, and other military centres. Civilian neighbourhoods have been hit; communication and energy grids are crumbling. As of June 19, more than 500 have been killed and thousand injured, according to a human rights group. Iran’s response, swift and muscular, included launching hundreds of ballistic missiles and drones at Israeli territory—most intercepted, some not. The region is on fire. Amidst this spiral, the voice of US President Donald Trump—now again a leading figure in American foreign policy—is unmistakably belligerent. He has called for Iran’s “unconditional surrender,” declared that the Supreme Leader is “not hard to find,” and suggested that only full military intervention can bring this war to a decisive close. The language mirrors that of George W. Bush in 2003. The assumptions do too: that air superiority, regime decapitation, and a short, sharp campaign can reset the Middle East in America’s favour. But this is not Iraq. And that assumption may be the most dangerous one yet. The strategic thinking in 2003 was based on two key premises: that Iraq had weapons of mass destruction, and that a swift removal of Saddam’s regime would lead to democratic transformation. Both premises collapsed under the weight of reality. Iran, on the other hand, does have an advanced nuclear program—although how close it is to building a weapon remains hotly debated. What’s beyond dispute is that its nuclear infrastructure is more advanced, more dispersed, and significantly better protected than Iraq’s ever was. Facilities like Fordow and Natanz are buried deep underground, hardened against aerial attacks. Even Israel’s cutting-edge F-35s and intelligence assets cannot reach them without either massive US bunker-busting weaponry or ground troops. Therein lies the Iraq parallel—and the trap. Just as Iraq’s regime change required boots on the ground to truly take control of the state apparatus, any serious attempt to dismantle Iran’s nuclear and military command structure would likely require a similar invasion. Airstrikes, however sophisticated, have their limits. And Tehran knows this. But there are deeper differences that make a repeat of 2003 far more perilous in 2025. Iran is a large, militarily capable state with regional networks—from Hezbollah in Lebanon to militias in Iraq and Syria—that can ignite multiple fronts. Its ability to retaliate is proven. Within hours of the first Israeli strikes, it launched one of the largest missile salvos in modern military history. Though most were intercepted, the message was clear: this is not a regime that will fall quietly. Even more critical is the geopolitical context. In 2003, the United States enjoyed broad—if ultimately misguided—international support. Today, the US is deeply divided at home and increasingly distrusted abroad. More importantly, it's not a unipolar world anymore. Russia and China—both Iran's friends—are vying for global power and actively shaping a multipolar order that resists American dominance. Any US action against Tehran will have to contend not just with Iran, but with a broader geopolitical axis that sees American interventionism as a common threat. These questions have no clear answers—and that’s exactly the problem. Iran, for all its internal repression and foreign policy aggressions, retains a resilient state structure. Removing its leadership without triggering national fragmentation would be almost impossible. Already, the Israeli bombings have stirred both fear and fury within Iran. Anti-government protests have erupted, yes—but so have nationalistic calls for unity. The regime is bloodied but not broken. And unlike Iraq, it has prepared for this scenario for decades. There are also the legal and humanitarian ramifications to consider. Several civilians have died in the Tehran region alone since Israeli strikes began. Hospitals are overwhelmed, and infrastructure is buckling. An American-led invasion would only magnify the toll—likely exponentially. The US would find itself at the center of international condemnation, with little to show but further destabilisation. And yet, despite all this, the temptation to act militarily remains strong in Washington’s more hawkish circles. They argue that deterrence has failed, that Iran’s leadership is emboldened, and that without a decisive blow, the region will descend into permanent conflict. They point to the limitations of sanctions, the breakdown of the 2015 nuclear deal, and the erosion of American credibility. To them, war is not the worst option—it is the only option left. But this is a false binary. Between all-out invasion and passive diplomacy lies a spectrum of action. The United States could intensify its containment strategy—reinforce missile defense across the Gulf, expand cyber operations to disrupt Iranian command-and-control networks, empower internal dissent, and prepare for limited retaliatory strikes without committing to regime change. The lessons of 2003 are not just historical footnotes. They are warnings. They tell us that removing a regime without understanding the society underneath is folly. That military victory without political vision is ruinous. And that America’s power, though vast, cannot impose stability on nations from 30,000 feet in the sky. As Israeli jets continue to strike and Tehran vows vengeance, the drums of intervention beat louder. But the echoes from Baghdad still ring. The world would do well to listen.

The Iran-Israel war that has broken out has spread much beyond covert attacks and proxy tensions

If the Strait of Hormuz is closed, much of the world could go without fuel. After the Israeli bombing that started on June 13, several Iranian politicians have suggested that the Strait should be closed. Esmail Kowsari, a commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), said the option was 'under consideration'. Why is the Strait of Hormuz so important? Can Iran really close the strait? Here is what you should know:
What is the Strait of Hormuz? Why is it strategically important?
Strait of Hormuz is a narrow waterway located between Iran and Oman. The strait, only 33 kilometres across at its narrowest point, links the Persian Gulf to the Gulf of Oman and Arabian Sea. It is the only sea passage for oil exports from key oil producers in the Gulf, like Saudi Arabia, UAE, Kuwait, Iraq and Qatar.
Why is Strait of Hormuz important for global trade?
Through this chokepoint passes nearly 20 per cent of the world's oil. It is estimated that 20 million barrels of petroleum liquids were transported every day through the strait in 2024. Nearly a third of global liquefied natural gas (LNG) trade also passes through the strait. A closure or disruption of maritime traffic in the Strait of Hormuz can cause a rise in global energy prices. It can play havoc with supply chains and impact economies, particularly in Asian importers like China, India, Japan and South Korea, which together account for 84 per cent of its crude oil shipments.Much of the Gulf oil and LNG for Europe also passes through the Strait of Homuz. These factors make the waterway strategically important for global energy security. https://www.wionews.com/videos/iran-israel-war-us-officials-prepare-for-possible-strike-on-iran-in-coming-days-report-1750335066169/embed Iran-Israel War: US Officials Prepare For Possible Strike On Iran In Coming Days: Report
Does Iran really control Strait of Hormuz?
The direct answer is, not entirely. But Iran's geographic position is along the northern coast of the Strait of Hormuz. This helps Iran exert influence on the strait. Technically, Iran can block traffic along the strait, as its narrowest point, at 21 nautical miles, is partly within its territorial waters, overlapping with Oman’s to the south.
Iranian military presence near the Strait of Hormuz
In theory, at least, Iran can deploy naval mines, launch ballistic and cruise missiles, suicide drones, fast attack boats, as well as Kilo and Ghadir class submarines. While it has not entirely used its military muscle in the strait, it has often threatened to do so. Iranian military's presence in the nearby strategic islands such as Greater Tunb, Lesser Tunb, and Abu Musa emboldens it to disrupt shipping along the Strait of Hormuz.
Has Iran ever fully closed Strait of Hormuz?
No, because it's against global law on 'innocent passage', specifically the international maritime law, formally known as United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea or UNCLOS. Iran has ratified the 1982 convention, though it has not signed the treaty. Besides, Oman has control over the southern coast of the strait, which limits Iran’s ability to exert any unilateral control over the strait.
Iran's threats to close or block Strait of Hormuz are not new: Past actions
Even so, Iran has quite often resorted to threatening the global community with closure or blocking of the Strait of Hormuz. The threats, which are being made amid the the ongoing war with Israel, happened in 2011, 2012, 2018 and 2019 too, at the height of tensions with the US, Israel, or as a response to international sanctions. Iran conducted mine attacks on oil tankers and seized some vessels in 2019. In April 2024, it seized a container ship amid the Israel-Hamas War in Gaza.
Will the Tanker War of the 1980s repeat?
But the first major disruption of the Strait of Hormuz occurred during the Iran-Iraq War of 1980–1988. At the time, Iran conducted attacks on neutral oil tankers, disrupting traffic, though not entirely stopping it. If push comes to shove, Iran can try to hit the strait using its military capabilities around the area. But it is likely going to be one of its last options.

Iranian military presence near the Strait of Hormuz In theory, at least, Iran can deploy naval mines, launch ballistic and cruise missiles, suicide drones, fast attack boats, as well as Kilo and Ghadir class submarines. Iran's threats to close or block Strait of Hormuz are not new: Past actions Even so, Iran has quite often resorted to threatening the global community with closure or blocking of the Strait of Hormuz.

After the Israeli bombing that started on June 13, several Iranian politicians have suggested that the Strait of Hormuz should be closed. Can Iran really close the Strait?

Where is Strait of Hormuz? Can Iran really close it as some officials threatened amid war with Israel?

Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz on Thursday said that ‘the cowardly ruler’ of Iran, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, will be ‘held accountable’ for his crimes following Iranian missiles that were launched at an Israeli hospital in Beersheba. In a post on his social media platform, Katz mentioned, “The cowardly Iranian dictator sits in the depths of the fortified bunker and fires aimed shots at hospitals and residential buildings in Israel. These are war crimes of the most serious kind - and Khamenei will be held accountable for his crimes.”
