India faced England in the ODI series opener at the Kennington Oval, London on Tuesday (July 12). After clinching the three T20Is, 2-1, Rohit Sharma-led India carried on with the momentum and hammered Jos Buttler & Co. by ten wickets to take a 1-0 lead in the process.

Opting to bowl first, everything clicked for India as they quickly reduced England to 26 for 5 before bundling them out for a paltry 110 in 25.2 overs, with Jasprit Bumrah returning with a fine 6 for 19. In reply, openers Rohit (56-ball 76*) and Shikhar Dhawan (31 not out) remained unbeaten as their unbroken 114-run stand completed the formalities for the visitors, in 18.4 overs.

During the run-chase, Rohit looked in command and was in full flow from the word go. During his unbeaten knock at The Oval, one of the Indian captain's six hit a young spectator in the crowd, resulting in the proceedings coming to a halt briefly. ENG vs IND, 1st ODI: Rohit Sharma's mammoth six hits young spectator, halts play briefly - WATCH

Virat Kohli remains a huge topic of discussion in world cricket with him not performing upto his usual standards at the international level. While his century-drought continues since late 2019, the 33-year-old had a rusty IPL 2022 -- ending with only 341 runs at a strike rate of 115.98 -- and has flopped so far in India's tour of England.

In the one-off Test against Ben Stokes & Co., in Edgbaston, Kohli returned with scores of 11 and 20 before he only managed 1 and 11 in the last two T20Is in the recently-concluded bilateral series.
Many former cricketers and experts of the game have opined on Kohli's form and how he can regain his touch. In this regard, former Indian stumper Syed Kirmani joined the bandwagon and has asked the former Indian to return to domestic cricket.

Rohit (76 not out) and fellow opener Shikhar Dhawan (31 not out) made light work of England`s 110, knocking off the victory target with 31.2 overs to spare. Gravitas: Calls for Virat Kohli to be dropped from Indian team

Rohit Sharma-led India locked horns with England in the first ODI, at The Oval, London, on Tuesday (July 12), where the visitors demolished Jos Buttler-led England by ten wickets. Opting to bowl first, India rode on Jasprit Bumrah's 6 for 19 to dismiss England for a paltry 110 -- their second-lowest ODI score versus the Men in Blue -- before chasing down the score in 18.2 overs to take a 1-0 lead.

During the Indian innings, Rohit stood tall with a sublime 58-ball 76 not out, striking at 131.03. Hitman was in a punishable mode by slamming as many as five sixes. One of his maximums hit a six-year-old young girl in the crowd.

Virat Kohli's form remains a cause of concern for Team India heading into the 2022 T20 World Cup. Kohli has so far had an dismal run in the ongoing England tour -- with scores of 11, 20, 1 and 11 in the one-off Test and last two T20Is respectively -- following an ordinary IPL 2022 edition.

Kohli's century-drought at the international level also continues, with him last reaching the triple-figure mark in late 2019 (during the pre-Covid era).
India were on a roll versus England in the three-match ODI series opener on Tuesday (July 12), winning the game by ten wickets with less than 50 overs being played overall. Rohit Sharma-led India opted to bowl first and bundled out Jos Buttler & Co. for 110, their lowest ODI score versus the Men in Blue, as Jasprit Bumrah wreaked havoc with 6 for 19.

Later, Rohit (58-ball 76 not out) and Shikhar Dhawan's sedate 31 completed the formalities for India, scripting an easy win over the two-time ODI world champions as they go 1-0 up in the series. After the clash, former England captain Michael Vaughan lavished huge praise on Rohit & Co., whom he believes should be on a roll and win all major titles in the coming years given their skillsets and talented players.

In addition, Bumrah scripted history by ending with the best-ever ODI bowling figures by an Indian in England.

ENG vs IND: Jasprit Bumrah wreaks havoc, achieves massive feat by an Indian bowler in 1st ODI

India and England were involved in a three-match T20I series, which ended on Sunday (July 10) in Edgbaston, Birmingham. With an unassailable 2-0 lead over Jos Buttler & Co., Rohit Sharma-led Men in Blue lost the third and final T20I by 17 runs, in a high-scoring encounter, and will now face the hosts in the series opener of the three ODIs.

While India will look to bring their newly-found T20I aggressive approach in the 50-over format, it will be interesting to see how England respond to the 50-over format's challenges sans Eoin Morgan. This will be the first time that the current world champions will enter the field in the shorter format without their sole World Cup-winning skipper and, hence, there will be eyes on England's new captain Jos Buttler. Needless to say, they will still resort to their gung-ho approach, which has already come into play even in the purest format of the game.

For India, there are fitness concerns regarding Virat Kohli, who is struggling to get back to his usual best. They will also miss the services of Bhuvneshwar Kumar, who was the Player-of-the-Series in the recently-concluded T20Is. Thus, expect anything over, or near, 300-plus contest with some advantage to the batting first side.

With the 2022 T20 World Cup right around the corner, many former cricketers and experts have shared their views regarding King Kohli, who has struggled to be at his usual best since the start of IPL 2022 edition and his century-drought continues since late 2019.

'What I found slightly baffling is....' - Aakash Chopra questions India's selection for 3rd T20I vs England

India started their white-ball series versus England on a winning note by defeating Jos Buttler-led English line-up by 50 runs in the first T20I at the Rose Bowl, Southampton on Thursday (July 07). While Hardik Pandya was the star performer, returning with 51 and 4 for 33, Deepak Hooda, Suryakumar Yadav, Yuzvendra Chahal and Arshdeep Singh also had a good outing.

After Rohit Sharma-led India's convincing win, former Indian opener Wasim Jaffer has heaped praise on Deepak Hooda and feels his recent performances will put pressure on a struggling Virat Kohli. While Kohli's strike rate has dipped a bit, especially in the IPL, Hooda has been onsong since the Ireland T20Is. The right-hander has had scores of 47*, 104, 59 and 33 in his last four T20Is and the 27-year-old has impressed with his hitting abilities from the word go, helping India get off to a flying start in the powerplays.

Thus, Jaffer told ESPNCricinfo, "Hooda’s performance will put pressure on Virat Kohli when he comes back. You’ve got a guy who has done so well, performed consistently in the IPL and the T20Is as well. The pressure might bring out the best of Virat Kohli."

“The big guys who are missing, KL Rahul (after recovering from injury) and Virat, are going to come back. But India will be happy that they have got the guys to back them up. The pressure might bring out the best of Virat Kohli." 'His performance will put pressure on Virat Kohli' - Wasim Jaffer heaps praise on Indian star

India have had a peculiar year with frequent captaincy changes. So far, six players have captained India in the calendar year, with more than five months to go in 2022. Apart from regular captain Rohit Sharma, the likes of KL Rahul, Virat Kohli, Rishabh Pant, Hardik Pandya and Jasprit Bumrah have led the team across formats.

Ahead of the start of the 1st T20I between India and England, in Southampton on Thursday (July 07), skipper Rohit -- who missed the fifth and final rescheduled Test between India and England in Edgbaston due to contracting the Covid-19 virus -- broke his silence over the frequent captaincy changes in the Indian camp.

"No. It's something we have prepared. We know the scheduling, we got to have the understanding, that players will be swapped every now and then. You can create your bench strength as well, a lot of opportunities for guys to come out and play. Exciting times, these guys have been here for a while playing in Ireland and played a couple of games here as well," said Rohit.

After the fifth and final rescheduled Test between England and India ended in a dramatic fashion for the visitors, in Edgbaston, Birmingham, the action shifts to the white-ball series, comprising three T20Is and ODIs each.

Rohit Sharma-led India will square off with Jos Buttler's England in the opening T20I of the three-match series, in Southampton, on Thursday (July 07). While India are also without some of its regulars such as Virat Kohli, Jasprit Bumrah, Rishabh Pant, KL Rahul, Ravindra Jadeja, England will look upon this series as the commencement of a new era under Buttler after the conclusion of the glorious Eoin Morgan-era. England, however, remains a strong side and will aim to continue in a similar manner in their new phase.

For India, they are now well ahead of this year's T20 World Cup, to be held in Australia. However, the South Africa home series and a near loss to Ireland in the second and final T20I will raise some questions. Does the team comprise the T20 tactical wherewithal to counter big-hitting sides on flat surfaces, which is very likely to be the case in Australia? The England series can answer some questions in this regard. The regulars will also return from the second and penultimate tie as the Men in Blue can now start playing their regular XI more often than not.

Match prediction for England vs India, 1st T20I: The surface at the Rose Bowl, Southampton has not been very high-scoring in this year's T20 Blast, with the average first-innings total being 165. Moreover, five out of he seven games have been won by sides batting first. Expect a good contest but England will start ahead of India, who are without many key players for the series opener.

Happy Birthday MS Dhoni: Virat Kohli, Suresh Raina lead wishes as former Indian skipper turns 41

England Test side has witnessed some major highs in the last few weeks. After whitewashing New Zealand 3-0 at home, Ben Stokes-led England beat India in the fifth and final rescheduled Test, in Edgabston, Birmingham, resorting to their newly-found bazball style of play; i.e. being more aggressive with the bat.

As a result, England have chased down three 275-plus totals versus New Zealand, on the trot, before beating India by chasing a mammoth 378-run target (being their most-successful Test run-chase). Thus, India's head coach Rahul Dravid shared his take on England's bazball approach after India missed a golden opportunity to win the five Tests 3-1 as the series ended in a 2-2 stalemate.

"People are talking a lot about Bazball. Some say this will change cricket entirely. As a coach what is your take on Bazball," a reporter asked Dravid during the press conference. To this, the former Indian captain-turned-coach politely responded with a smile and said, "Don't really know what's that."

'No one comes back to form....' - Irfan Pathan questions Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli's absence from WI ODI squad

India dominated proceedings for most parts in the just-concluded Edgbaston Test before losing the contest by seven wickets as the five-match series, which commenced during 2021 English summer, ended in a 2-2 stalemate on Tuesday (July 06).

In Rohit Sharma's absence, India were led by pacer Jasprit Bumrah whereas Rishabh Pant was his deputy. India were asked to bat first as they posted 416 after centuries from Pant and Ravindra Jadeja. In reply, England posted 284 courtesy of Jonny Bairstow's ton, giving a 132-run healthy lead to Team India. India, however, didn't capitalise and only managed to post 245 in their second essay, setting up a challenging 378-run target. While the target was a stiff one, India had a chance to completely bat England out of the contest by setting up anything over 450, however, they fell flat. In the run-chase, England were 109/3 before tons from Bairstow and Root took India home.

Important for India to have a stable captain: Former stumper highlights glaring issue after Edgbaston Test

Team India dominated the fifth and final Test versus England for most parts only to go down eventually by seven wickets as the five-match Test series, which started during the 2021 English summer, ended in a 2-2 stalemate on Tuesday (July 05) in Edgbaston, Birimingham.

Being asked to bat first, India were in a spot of bother at 98-5 before Rishabh Pant's 146 and Ravindra Jadeja's 104 propelled the Rohit Sharma-less team to 416 in the first innings. In reply, England managed only 284, despite Jonny Bairstow's century, to give a sizeable 132-run lead to the Indian team. India missed a trick by not completely batting England out of contest in their second essay, being dismissed for 245, but still setup a challenging 378-run target for the hosts to level the series.

Ben Stokes-led England's newly formed aggressive approach with the bat tested Jasprit Bumrah & Co. as they lost the plot to eventually lose by seven wickets, despite reducing England to 109-3 during the penultimate day's play. An unbroken 269-run fourth-wicket stand between centurions Bairstow and Joe Root (142 not out) took their side past the finish line.

India's Player-of-the-Series (who ended the series with 23 scalps overall) stated, "That's the beauty of Test cricket, even if you have three good days. We fell short with the bat yesterday and that is where we let the opposition in to let the match slip away from us. Ifs and buts can always be there. ENG vs IND, 5th Test: Where did India lose the plot despite a sizeable lead? Jasprit Bumrah explains

MS Dhoni remains a huge name in world cricket. The legendary cricketer retired from international cricket on August 15, 2020. However, he remains a darling of the nation for his stupendous contribution towards Indian cricket courtesy of his batting, finishing and wicketkeeping skills along with leading India to all three major ICC titles as captain.

While Dhoni ended with a mammoth 17,266 international tons with 16 hundreds overall, his wicketkeeping records were also exceptional. The former Indian captain ended with 829 dismissals -- 634 catches and 195 stumpings overall. He is the third-most successful keeper in terms of total dismissals and has accounted for most stumpings in white-ball formats. Dhoni's presence of mind, wise mind and being aware of the angles made him a force to reckon with as a keeper. His guidance and clever moves from behind the stumps often benefitted India.

Recently, India's former fielding coach R Sridhar opened up on Dhoni's brilliance behind the stumps and explained the science behind his prowess as a keeper.

"You didn't see him doing these things, probably in 2016 (correct me if I am wrong). His awareness of the game has grown so much. And those stumpings that you see, which he does, I would warn young wicketkeepers to not try that at home or in practice because he has done it after collecting millions of deliveries behind the stumps. Even if you break it down in slow motion, while his hands are coming forward towards the stumps, his wrists will be going back, giving a cushion to the balls," Sridhar added.

Rohit to undergo cardiovascular test to determine his availability for T20I series opener vs ENG: Report

In 1959, as many as five players (Vinoo Mankad, Hemu Adhikari, Datta Gaekwad, Pankaj Roy and Gulabrai Ramchand) led Team India. In 2022, India have broken the 63-year-old record as Jasprit Bumrah became the sixth player to lead the team in the calendar year.

It has been a unique year for India, with captaincy changes happening at regular intervals due to injury and Covid concerns or with two sides playing parallelly. In this regard, the likes of Virat Kohli, KL Rahul, Rohit Sharma, Rishabh Pant, Hardik Pandya and now Bumrah have led India across formats. Kohli led India in a solitary Test, during the third and final match versus hosts South Africa, before resigning from the post. KL Rahul had led in his place in the second and penultimate Test with Kohli out of action due to injury. Rahul also led in the three ODIs in South Africa before Rohit Sharma resumed captaincy duties in the home white-ball series versus West Indies and Sri Lanka, respectively.

Post IPL 2022, Rishabh Pant led India in the five T20Is versus the Proteas at home, as regulars such as Rohit, Kohli, etc. were rested before the one-off Test against England. Hardik led India in the recently-concluded Ireland T20Is as Rohit & Co. were preparing for their rescheduled fifth and final Test versus the Three Lions, which got underway on Friday (July 01). With Rohit being ruled out of the England Test due to Covid concerns, Bumrah became the sixth captain of India in 2022.

Can't get better than this. Excited and looking forward to this." Ahead of the match, head coach Rahul Dravid told the broadcasters, "I think he (Bumrah) is a very thoughtful individual, understands the game very well. Also he commands the respect of the team, which is very important as a leader. Bowling changes, field changes obviously will only get better with time. It's a new challenge. It's not easy for a fast bowler to captain, he's got to think about his own bowling too. Have had a few conversations with him, and told him that we need him more as a bowler. Captaincy is something that you'll get better at as you do it more."

Bumrah became the second pacer to lead India in the purest format after Kapil Dev. He is officially India's 36th Test captain.

ALSO READ | ENG vs IND, 5th Test: Milestone alert! ENG vs IND, 5th Test: Jasprit Bumrah becomes India's 6th captain in 2022, shatters 63-year-old record

The last time Virat Kohli played in England, he was India's full-time captain. During the 2021 English summer, Kohli-led India gained an unassailable 2-1 lead in the five-match series versus hosts England before the fifth and final Test got rescheduled due to Covid concerns in the Indian camp. Since then, Kohli stepped down as the Test and T20I captain and was sacked as ODI skipper. He will now play the series finale versus England under a captain (Jasprit Bumrah) and vice-captain (Rishabh Pant) who made their Test debuts under him.

On Friday (July 01), when Bumrah-led India take on the field versus Ben Stokes' England, the 33-year-old will have a tough job in hand to lead India's charge with the bat with no regular skipper Rohit Sharma as the visitors aim for their first-ever red-ball series triumph in England since 2007. As Kohli gears up for the series finale, the right-hander is just 40 runs away from joining batting icons Sachin Tendulkar and Sunil Gavaskar in an elite list.

If Kohli manages to score 40, or more, runs in the Edgbaston Test, he will join the elusive club of Indian batters to have scored 2000-plus runs versus England in the purest format. Till now, only Tendulkar and Gavaskar have achieved this feat. Kohli has 1,960 runs versus England from 48 innings in 27 Tests, at an average of 43.55. He has five centuries, nine fifties and six ducks versus the Three Lions.

ENG vs IND, 5th Test: Milestone alert! Virat Kohli needs 40 runs to join Tendulkar, Gavaskar in elite club

Ahead of India's fifth and final Test versus Ben Stokes-led England, the visiting side was dealt with a major blow on Sunday (June 26) when regular captain Rohit Sharma tested positive for Covid-19. Since then, he has isolated himself and is running against time to recover and become fully fit for the series decider, i.e, a spillover of the incomplete 2021 five-match series.

As per a report in ESPNCricinfo, it suggested that Rohit tested positive once again on Wednesday morning (June 29) and will undergo two more rounds of testing, one later in the day and the other on Thursday (June 30), before a final call is taken on his availability. In his absence, Jasprit Bumrah is being considered to lead India. If this happens, the 28-year-old speedster will become only the second pacer to captain India in whites after the legend Kapil Dev.

We will keep monitoring him, we have still got close to 36 hours to go so he will have a test later tonight and one maybe tomorrow morning as well. We will see, it is really up to the medical team and sports science team to decide on that. We will keep monitoring,” Dravid told reporters ahead of the 5th Test in Edgbaston, Birmingham.

India vs England, 5th Test: Is Rohit Sharma ruled out? Will Jasprit Bumrah lead visitors? Dravid gives updates

Rahul Dravid has operated with several captains ever since he took over as the permanent head coach of Team India last year. Ahead of the fifth and final Test between India and England, which gets underway on July 01 in Edgbaston, it seems that Dravid will have to work and strategise with another new captain in the form of Jasprit Bumrah.

The 28-year-old wily pacer Jasprit is in-line to become India's stand-in captain for the rescheduled fifth Test if regular skipper Rohit Sharma fails to recover on time. For the unversed, Rohit had tested positive for Covid-19 on Sunday (June 26), shortly after India's four-day practice game versus Leicestershire. He again tested positive, as per a report in ESPNCricinfo, on Wednesday morning (June 29) and will take two more tests (later in the day and on Thursday) before the series decider. Thus, it seems highly unlikely that Hitman will recover on time for the final Test, i.e. a spillover from last year's series. In 2021, Virat Kohli-led India had gained an unassailable 2-1 lead over hosts England before the final Test was cancelled in the wake of the Covid crisis in the Indian camp.

As per reports, the Indian team management has already informed Bumrah that he will lead incase Rohit doesn't recover. Earlier, the pacer had served as Rohit's deputy for the India-Sri Lanka home series, prior to IPL 2022. If he comes out as India's captain on Friday, he will become only the second speedster after Kapil Dev to lead the national side in whites.

For Rohit, the 35-year-old is set to undergo few more rounds of Covid-19 tests to know about his availability. In the incomplete five-match series, Rohit remains India's highest run-scorer, with 368 runs including two fifties and a hundred.

India have a solid chance of winning their first-ever Test series on English soil. Thus, Bumrah will have a huge responsibility on his shoulders in case Rohit misses out.

Jasprit Bumrah to captain Team India in 5th Test vs England if Rohit Sharma misses out: Report

Umran Malik finally made his debut for Team India in the just-concluded Ireland T20I series, held at The Village, Dublin. The Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) pacer, who ended IPL 2022 with 22 scalps, was handed his maiden India cap during the series opener, however, he bowled only a solitary over, conceding 14 runs.

Many were hoping for Umran to retain his place in the playing XI when India locked horns with Ireland in the second and final T20I, on Tuesday evening (June 28), with an unassailable 1-0 lead in their kitty. Much to many's delight, Umran was part of the XI and bowled his full quota of overs, returning with 4-0-42-1 (including two no-balls). However, the 22-year-old speedster, from Jammu & Kashmir, defended 16 runs overs in the final over of the run-fest, to give away 12 and take India to a 4-run win in defence of a mammoth 225/7. After the clash, former Indian opener-turned-commentator Aakash Chopra opined on whether Umran is fit for international level or he still needs more time.

'How ready is Umran Malik?' - Former India opener opines on pacer's preparedness at the top level

Hardik Pandya-led India locked horns with Ireland in the second and final T20I on Tuesday evening (June 28), at The Village, Dublin. With an unassailable lead, India aimed for a whitewash and opted to bat first. On a batting-friendly track, Deepak Hooda's 104 and Sanju Samson's 42-ball 77 propelled India to a mammoth 225/7 before the visitors defended the total by four runs to win the series 2-0, despite Andrew Balbirnie & Co.'s spirited fight.

During the Indian innings, Samson and Hooda got together at 13/1 and their 176-run second-wicket stand, highest partnership for India for any wicket in the shortest format, made heads turn.
