When the opening day of the media rights auction commenced, on Sunday (June 12), it was revealed that IPL is now the second most lucrative sports league&nbsp;worldwide after the NFL. What started as a tournament with a lot of certainties riding on it, the IPL has come a long way since its inception in 2008.&nbsp;

Thus, BCCI chief Sourav Ganguly also recently expressed his happiness seeing IPL's remarkable rise and said while speaking at the India Leadership Council event, "I've seen the game evolve, where players like me earned a few hundreds and now have the potential of earning crores. This game is run by the fans, by the people of this country, and by the BCCI, which was formed by cricket fans. This sport is strong and will continue to evolve. The IPL generates more revenue than the English Premier League. It makes me feel happy and proud that the sport I love has evolved to become so strong."

IPL media rights auction: Disney Star, Viacom18 among winners as BCCI earns UNIMAGINABLE amount

Dinesh Karthik has made a remarkable comeback into the Indian team after the 2019 ODI World Cup. Many had written him off but the veteran keeper-batter produced a sensational performance with the bat for the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in IPL 2022 and, hence, earned a recall into the Indian T20I line-up.

Karthik, at 37, is part of the Rishabh Pant-led Indian squad for the ongoing South Africa home T20Is. While he faced only two balls and was unbeaten on 1 in the series opener, Karthik produced another gem of an innings as a finisher when he returned with a 21-ball 30* in the second T20I versus the Proteas in Cuttack on Sunday evening (June 12). Thus, he is now also performing for Team India as he remains in contention to feature in the national side's 2022 T20 World Cup squad.

However, former Indian opener-turned-commentator Gautam Gambhir feels Karthik will find it tough to retain his place once regulars such as KL Rahul, captain Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli and others return.

Speaking on Star Sports' Match Point, Gambhir lauded DK's 2nd T20I heroics and said, "It was very valuable (the knock), he has been doing that for the last 2-3 months for RCB. But, I was a bit amazed that Axar came ahead of Dinesh Karthik. I would've been more happy if he had come ahead of Axar."

<section>
"Too early to say. T20 World Cup is far ahead. He needs to consistently perform till then but if he wants to bat only in the last three overs, things could get tough. India will definitely be looking at someone in the top 7 who can bowl and if Axar is batting at 7, the team would be a batter short," he opined.

"In such a case I would not have him (Karthik) in the World Cup Squad. I would definitely have people like Rishabh Pant, and Deepak Hooda (in the team). We have got KL Rahul, we've got Suryakumar Yadav, Rohit Sharma. Once they come back, it's going to be tough for Dinesh Karthik to find a place in the playing XI. If he doesn't have a place in the playing XI, there's no point giving him a place in the squad," Gambhir mentioned.

"Once KL, Rohit, Surya and Virat are back, I don't see him in the playing XI. This will be your top 4 and then you'll have someone like Hooda, Pant, Hardik, Jadeja. I will have a younger guy (in place of Karthik) who is a better fielder on those grounds and can probably chip in with a couple of overs as well. Karthik, unfortunately, will have to miss out unless and until the selectors make a huge call and drop one of the top four," the cricketer-turned-politician added.

Karthik, however, would want to continue performing for Team India in the remainder of the SA series to keep his World Cup dreams alive. On Tuesday evening (June 14), Pant &amp; Co. will take on Temba Bavuma's South Africa in the third T20I to keep the series alive after conceding a 2-0 lead.

IPL media rights: Action to resume on Day 3 after whopping sale of Indian broadcast & digital packages

MS Dhoni-led India created history by becoming the first-ever host nation to win a 50-over World Cup during the 2011 edition in the subcontinent. Dhoni &amp; Co. were favourites ahead of the tournament and beat teams like Australia, Sri Lanka, Pakistan and many others to end with the elusive trophy&nbsp;and break their 28-year-long title drought.

During the second semi-finals, hosts India faced Shahid Afridi-led Pakistan, who came into the game without Shoaib Akhtar. Despite being in the squad, the Rawalpindi Express wasn't named in the playing XI and was declared "unfit" by the team management. Recently, Akhtar recalled the semi-final, held in Mohali, and stated it was "unfair" from the team management to drop him. He&nbsp;further added that had he played, he would've dismissed Indian openers Sachin Tendulkar (who was the Player-of-the-Match for his chancy 85) and Virender Sehwag (who gave the team a flying start).

“Mohali memory haunts me...that 2011 World Cup semi-final. They should have played me, they should have. It was completely unfair from the team management. I knew that I had just two matches left and I had this desire that at Wankhede the Pakistan flag is held high and the team is plays the final. I knew that India was under immense pressure. The entire nation and the media were looking up to the team which means we were the underdogs. So I believed that we shouldn't have taken the pressure,” Akhtar said in an interaction with Sportskeeda. &nbsp;

“They told me I was unfit. But I went inside, I bowled eight straight overs during the warm-up. If I played that match, no matter what the consequence would have been, I would have dismissed Sachin and Sehwag. India would have collapsed if Sachin and Sehwag were dismissed early. I was really really hurt. So see that match for 5-6 hours and watch Pakistan lose from the dug-out...I am not that kind of person who cries but I'm a kind of person who breaks things. And I did break a few things in the dressing room because I was so sad, disappointed and furious and so was the entire nation. I knew that all it mattered was those first 10 overs,” the former pacer&nbsp;added.&nbsp;

Talking about the contest, India opted to bat first and rode on Sehwag's 38, SRT's 85 and Suresh Raina's vital 36 to post 260/9. In reply, Afridi &amp; Co. were bowled out for 231 to lose by 29 runs. Later, Dhoni-led India beat Sri Lanka in the final to win the title.

MS Dhoni-led India created history by becoming the first-ever host nation to win a 50-over World Cup during the 2011 edition in the subcontinent. Dhoni & Co. were favourites ahead of the tournament and beat teams like Australia, Sri Lanka, Pakistan and many others to end with the elusive trophy and break their 28-year-long title drought.

He further added that had he played, he would've dismissed Indian openers Sachin Tendulkar (who was the Player-of-the-Match for his chancy 85) and Virender Sehwag (who gave the team a flying start). “Mohali memory haunts me...that 2011 World Cup semi-final. They should have played me, they should have. It was completely unfair from the team management. I knew that I had just two matches left and I had this desire that at Wankhede the Pakistan flag is held high and the team is plays the final. I knew that India was under immense pressure. The entire nation and the media were looking up to the team which means we were the underdogs. So I believed that we shouldn't have taken the pressure,” Akhtar said in an interaction with Sportskeeda. Hardik Pandya's captaincy stocks have risen ever since he impressed one and all with his leadership qualities in the IPL 2022 edition. In what was the star all-rounder's first-ever season as captain, the 28-year-old made a huge mark by leading the debutants Gujarat Titans (GT) to their maiden title, beating Rajasthan Royasl (RR) with ease in the final.

Hardik's calm and composed nature on the field, leading the charge in all departments despite additional responsibility and some tactical decisions stood out as many former cricketers and experts of the game are impressed with his game-reading abilities as captain. Ahead of the India-South Africa T20Is, where Hardik has been promoted as the vice-captain after Rishabh Pant replaced an injured KL Rahul to become the new stand-in skipper, former off-spinner Harbhajan Singh made a huge claim on Hardik.

"One of the biggest revelations in this year's IPL was the advent of Hardik Pandya as the skipper of the Gujarat Titans and the way he led the team from the front to win the coveted title is definitely praiseworthy. His intent and positive captaincy are signs that he can lead Team India in the future," Harbhajan told PTI in an interview.

For the guys who played the final, we gave them an extra day off. But I think his leadership was very impressive right through the IPL. He performed very well. In the sense, you don't have to be designated as a leader to be part of any leadership group. It's not only about Hardik being designated in a position. Injury-hit Team India will face Temba Bavuma-led South Africa in the series opener of the five-match T20Is at home on Thursday evening (June 09), in New Delhi, India. On Wednesday evening (June 08), news broke out that stand-in captain KL Rahul has been injured, along with wrist spinner Kuldeep Yadav, hence, Rishabh Pant will lead India in the five&nbsp;T20Is&nbsp;versus the Proteas.

For the unversed, Pant was already named the captain when the BCCI selection committee named a Rohit Sharma-less Indian squad for the SA T20Is. With big names such as Rohit, Virat Kohli and Jasprit Bumrah rested, and now with Rahul's absence, Pant has a huge task to keep India's winning run intact in the shortest format (12), who are one victory away from creating a new world record of most successive T20I wins.&nbsp;

As soon as Pant will enter the Arun Jaitley Stadium, New Delhi for the coin toss with Bavuma, he will join an elite list by going past former captains Virat Kohli and MS Dhoni. Suresh Raina, the former all-rounder, is the youngest ever Indian captain in men's&nbsp;T20Is (23 years and 197 days), hence, Pant is all set to join him at the second spot. India vs SA: Captain Rishabh Pant set to join elite list during 1st T20I, to go past Virat Kohli & MS Dhoni

India and South Africa will lock horns with each other in what is expected to be a mouth-watering five-match T20I series with the opening game to be played on Thursday evening (June 09). While Temba Bavuma-led Proteas are a strong squad, India have been hit with several injury concerns after their famed trio -- regular captain Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli and Jasprit Bumrah -- were rested.

Ahead of the first T20I, news broke out from the Indian camp that regular vice-captain and stand-in skipper KL Rahul has been injured, along with wrist spinner Kuldeep Yadav. Hence, Rishabh Pant is all set to don the captain's hat for the first time ever for Team India whereas the 28-year-old IPL-winning skipper Hardik Pandya will be his deputy for the series. Thus, India have lots riding on them to beat Proteas and also keep their unbeaten streak alive in the shortest format (currently at 12). If India win the series opener, they will create a world record of winning the most consecutive T20Is.&nbsp;

Match prediction for India vs SA 1st T20I: The sweltering heat of a typical June afternoon is set to trouble players from both sides. While the majority of them have played IPL 2022, the heat and humidity has just worsened in the national capital. Dew is, however, expected in the evening game and, hence, both sides' captains will prefer batting second, which has become a trend in the shortest format.

For India, they will have some issues finalising their playing XI after injuries to Rahul and Kuldeep. Nonetheless, they still have a lot of options, especially in bowling, but it will be interesting to see the all-rounders and bowlers who get the nod. In batting, the onus will lie on Ishan Kishan-Ruturaj Gaikwad, Pant, in-form finishers Hardik and Dinesh Karthik (if he plays). For SA, they have their main players but it remains to be seen how they adapt to the conditions and the surface in Delhi.

Ahead of the first T20I, news broke out from the Indian camp that regular vice-captain and stand-in skipper KL Rahul has been injured, along with wrist spinner Kuldeep Yadav. Hence, Rishabh Pant is all set to don the captain's hat for the first time ever for Team India whereas the 28-year-old IPL-winning skipper Hardik Pandya will be his deputy for the series. Thus, India have lots riding on them to beat Proteas and also keep their unbeaten streak alive in the shortest format (currently at 12). If India win the series opener, they will create a world record of winning the most consecutive T20Is. ALSO READ | India vs SA: Captain Rishabh Pant set to join elite list during 1st T20I, to go past Virat Kohli & MS Dhoni For India, they will have some issues finalising their playing XI after injuries to Rahul and Kuldeep. Possible India XI: Ruturaj Gaikwad, Ishan Kishan, Shreyas Iyer, Rishabh Pant (c & wk), Hardik Pandya (vc), Dinesh Karthik/Deepak Hooda, Axar Patel, Bhuvnenshwar Kumar, Harshal Patel, Avesh Khan, Yuzvendra Chahal Possible SA XI: Temba Bavuma (c), Quinton de Kock (wk), Reeza Hendricks, Rassie van der Dussen, Aiden Markram, David Miller, Dwaine Pretorius, Kagiso Rabada, Keshav Maharaj, Anrich Nortje, Tabraiz Shamsi.

India vs South Africa 1st T20I: Match prediction and likely playing XIs of both teams

The Ranji Trophy knockouts commenced soon after IPL 2022 and there is plenty happening in the quarter-finals. In Bengal versus Jharkhand clash, being held at the Just Cricket Academy Ground, Bengaluru, the Abhimanyu Easwaran-led Bengal have broken a 129-year-old record courtesy of their brilliant batting performance after being asked to bat first.

As many as nine batsmen hit half-centuries for Bengal as they&nbsp;scored a mammoth 773 for 7 declared on Wednesday in the first innings versus a hapless Saurabh Tiwary-led Jharkhand. While two of the nine batsmen returned with centuries -- Sudip Gharami top-scoring with 186 followed by Anustup Majumdar's 117 --&nbsp;the other seven went past the fifty-run mark. Sayan Mondal and Akash Deep remained unbeaten on 53 each whereas Manoj Tiwary,&nbsp;Shahbaz Ahmed, Abhishek Raman, captain Abhimanyu and wicketkeeper Abishek Porel were dismissed after scoring half-fifty apiece.

Thus, Bengal's&nbsp;innings beat a first-class record that&nbsp;stood rock solid since 1893. Back then,&nbsp;a touring Australian side had made&nbsp;eight half-centuries in an 843-run innings against a combined team from Oxford and Cambridge universities in Portsmouth, England.&nbsp;

"What a team, what an effort! Proud to be a part of it," batsman&nbsp;Tiwary, who scored 73, wrote on Twitter while sharing a picture with&nbsp;the other eight batters.

Umran Malik had made heads turn throughout the IPL 2022 edition. His raw pace, deadly yorkers and some tidy spells changed the complexion of the game in favour of Kane Williamson-led Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) before the one-time winners' group stage exit.

Umran, however, returned with as many as 22 wickets and was the fourth-highest wicket-taker, overall, in the 15th season of the IPL, which ended with Gujarat Titans (GT) being crowned the eventual winners. Further, the Jammu &amp; Kashmir speedster bowled the fastest ball of the match in every game SRH featured in and held the record for bowling the quickest ball of the season (157 kph) before Lockie Ferguson went past him&nbsp;in the final (by clocking 157.3 kph).&nbsp;

After a memorable IPL 2022 season, Umran is now part of India's T20I squad for the home series versus South Africa, which gets underway on June 09 in New Delhi. Before that, the 22-year-old revealed how SRH's bowling coach and legendary SA pacer Steyn had predicted his India call-up before IPL 2022.

"When I got selected for India, Dale sir (Steyn) was with me in the team bus. We were going for the match. Everyone congratulated me and Dale sir said, 'I told you before the IPL that you will get the India call-up after the season'. And that's exactly what happened, by the grace of god. My goal is to give my best for Team India now,” Malik said in the video shared by BCCI.

'I thought 'dad should've been here': Md Siraj recalls memorable Test debut at the MCG

Team India already have one eye on the forthcoming T20 World Cup, set to be held in Australia later this year, after their disastrous run in the last year's edition. Ahead of the showpiece event, former Indian captain, Kapil Dev slammed India's top order's T20 batting approach and asked them to strike at a higher rate.&nbsp;

The 1983 World Cup-winning skipper Kapil feels that Rohit Sharma, KL Rahul and Virat Kohli have the potential to go at a strike rate of 150-160, however, they restrict themselves and often get out while accelerating at the latter half of the innings, putting pressure on the rest of the batters. Kapil also went on to add that if they can't change their approach in a fast-moving game, they should be replaced by fresh faces.&nbsp;

"They have a big reputation and there's huge pressure on them, which shouldn't be the case. You have to play fearless cricket. All of these are players who can hit at a strike rate of 150-160. Whenever we need them to score runs, they all get out. When it is time to take off (in the innings), they are out. And that adds to pressure. Either you play an anchor or you play striker,” said Kapil on the Youtube channel&nbsp;Uncut.

Kapil stressed on Rahul and said, "When you talk about KL Rahul, if the team tells him to play the entire 20 overs and you come back with a score of, say 60 not out, you're not doing justice to your team." He added, "

“I think the approach needs to change. And if it doesn't, you have to change the players. A big player is expected to make a big impact. Having a big reputation is not enough, you also have to deliver great performances."

At present, a second-stringed Rahul-led India are gearing up for the home T20Is versus South Africa, starting on June 09. Rohit and Virat have been rested and will return to action during the one-off Test versus England, on July 01.

Either you play an anchor or you play striker,” said Kapil on the Youtube channel Uncut. ALSO READ | Need a wicketkeeper who will play Dhoni’s role: Shastri on how Karthik can cement his place in Indian team Kapil stressed on Rahul and said, "When you talk about KL Rahul, if the team tells him to play the entire 20 overs and you come back with a score of, say 60 not out, you're not doing justice to your team." He added, " “I think the approach needs to change. And if it doesn't, you have to change the players. A big player is expected to make a big impact. Having a big reputation is not enough, you also have to deliver great performances." At present, a second-stringed Rahul-led India are gearing up for the home T20Is versus South Africa, starting on June 09. Rohit and Virat have been rested and will return to action during the one-off Test versus England, on July 01.

When we need them to score runs, they get out: Kapil Dev on India's top order's T20 batting approach

Former Indian opener-turned-commentator feels that nobody really remembers the 50-over matches anymore and called for changes to be made in the ODI format. Before him, ex-Indian team head coach Ravi Shastri had called up for the discontinuation of T20I matches and restricting the format to only World Cups. Now, Chopra feels it is the shorter format which is 'most boring contest and meaningless'.

In a video shared on his YouTube channel, the 44-year-old cricket expert Chopra pointed out,&nbsp;"If you see the interest levels, keeping the Tests aside as everything is not commercialization, I feel ODI cricket is the most boring contest. It is the most meaningless, it is the format that no one remembers."

"It is the format where neither the broadcasters nor the fans enjoy it. That's ODI cricket and there are multiple reasons for that. In 50-over cricket, the 30 overs in the middle are neither a Test nor a T20. ODI is not a format that is going to keep you engaged for too long," he opined.

Chopra further added, "I think ODI cricket is struggling. It is not T20I cricket that is struggling. Let the T20 internationals continue because the broadcasters will need them, or else they won't give you the money. Every country's broadcast rights will take a major hit."

Ever since the T20 cricket rose to prominence, it has affected both Test and ODI format. While a lot is being done to keep the purest format relevant in current times, with the introduction of a WTC, and many Test series have lived upto expectations as well recently -- with less number of draws -- ODI cricket has taken a hit, especially when it comes to bilaterals involving lowly-ranked sides.

Tests, ODIs or T20Is? Former Indian opener picks the format which is 'most boring and meaningless'

Hardik Pandya impressed one and all with his all-round abilities and captaincy in the recently-concluded IPL 2022 edition, leading the debutants Gujarat Titans (GT) to their maiden championship. With Hardik's stunning comeback at the competitive level, the 28-year-old is set to also&nbsp;return for Team India in their forthcoming home T20Is versus South Africa, starting on June 09.

Hardik's fitness and all-round abilities were keenly observed by many during IPL 15. The 15th season was Hardik's return to competitive cricket after a long time, having been on a break following the 2021 T20 World Cup due to fitness concerns. While he did bowl at regular intervals, picking eight wickets, and amassed&nbsp;487 runs for Gujarat, many feel he is now ready to make a comeback in the white-ball formats and slowly reappear in&nbsp;the red-ball side. However, former Indian head coach Ravi Shastri wants Hardik to only stick to T20Is till this year's World Cup, set to be held in Australia later this year.

"He will walk back into that squad for me either as a batter or as an all-rounder. I don't think he is that badly injured where he cannot bowl you two overs. He has had ample rest and he will continue to have ample rest because that's the only format he should play going into the World Cup. They shouldn't take the risk of making him play ODI cricket," said Shastri in&nbsp;Star Sports'&nbsp;show&nbsp;Game Plan.

Shastri further asserted how a fully fit Hardik is an asset for Team India, as he has the capability of doing two players' jobs.&nbsp;

"Massive, he does the job for two players. A Hardik Pandya playing just as a batter would mean he has to bat in the top four or five, but Hardik Pandya playing as an all-rounder means he can bat at five, six, or four and still bowl those two-three overs for you," said the ex-India&nbsp;coach.

In the last few&nbsp;years, Hardik hasn't bowled a lot -- in the IPL or for India -- due to back concerns. However, he bowled at regular intervals in IPL 15 and also clocked the 140kph mark in the first few matches.

India and Australia were engaged in a gruelling four-match Test series in 2020/21 Down Under. During the last edition of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, in Australia, India had their back against the wall at most times but found ways to stage a comeback at all times to eventually beat the then Tim Paine-led Australia 2-1 in their own backyard and retain the BG Trophy.

After being 1-0 down following the series opener defeat, India was without then regular captain Virat Kohli -- who was out on maternity leave -- but defied all odds to emerge on top eventually. Under Ajinkya Rahane, India levelled the series in the second Test, at the MCG, and then pulled off a&nbsp;heist to save the third and penultimate encounter before winning the series finale by three wickets.&nbsp;

Recently, R Ashwin recalled India's miraculous SCG Test escape, where his and Hanuma Vihari's unbeaten 62-run sixth-wicket stand saved the visitors from the jaws of defeats. "It was surprising to me that I went bowling after the injury with painkillers. And bowled 13 or 14 over on the trot. It was so bad I was rolling on the floor because of the pain. My wife and kids helped me to stand and then the Physio came to check me. I went to the game crawling, but did my best," Ashwin told ANI.

The 62-run stand between Ashwin and Vihari helped India save the Test match when they were asked to chase 407. At one stage, India were 250-3 and on the attack courtesy of Rishabh Pant's 97 and Cheteshwar Pujara's gritty 77. However, their dismissals exposed India's lower order, filled with injured players such as Ravindra Jadeja, Vihari, and Ashwin.

Recalling how Vihari and he&nbsp;came up with a strategy to not let Australia break their stand, Ashwin added, "We both got comfortable the instant we went in. We realised what problem we had, he could not come forward and be going on the backfoot. He was struggling from the hamstring injury. When I went to the crease I could not go forward against the fast bowlers. So in that situation, I said we will rotate and see how this will work."

Young guns&nbsp;such as Shubman Gill, Washington Sundar, T Natarajan, Md Siraj, Shardul Thakur, Pant, etc. made a mark to star in India's memorable 2-1 win over Australia.

My wife and kids helped me to stand: R Ashwin recalls India's miraculous escape in SCG Test

India's tour of Australia, in 2020/21, was a memorable affair for the visitors. While India lost the ODIs, 2-1, they won the T20Is, by the same margin, before the action moved to the four-match Test series Down Under. After a disastrous performance in the first Test, in Adelaide, India was without regular skipper Virat Kohli -- who missed the remainder of the series -- due to paternity leave, however, Ajinkya Rahane-led India came from behind to win the series 2-1 in a historic fashion.

India battled various obstacles to win the series 2-1. While many regulars got injured, India also faced racial discrimination when Md Siraj was fielding near the boundary ropes during the third and penultimate Test at the SCG, Sydney. Recently, Ajinkya Rahane recalled the conversation he had with the umpires when the situation was blown out of proportion with Siraj being repeatedly racially abused.&nbsp;

"When Siraj again came to me (on the fourth day), I told the umpires (Paul Reiffel and Paul Wilson) that (they) need to take action and we won't play till then," Rahane said as per an ESPNCricinfo report on the sidelines of an event in Mumbai on Wednesday (June 02).

"The umpires said that you can't stall the game and can walk out if you want. We said that we are here to play and not sit in the dressing room and insisted on getting the abusers out of the ground. It was important to support our colleague given the situation he had been through. What happened in Sydney was completely wrong," he opined.

Rahane further opened up on the big issue of racism and said, "I don't think it has anything to do with a particular section of people in a particular country. Everywhere people do believe that they belong to a majority sort of a thing and they will have their way. And I think racism is one tip of it, where people believe that is a way of differentiation with someone. The only solution is better parenting and better awareness."

"Yes, it happened at that ground (SCG) and at that place (Australia) a lot more. But it was courageous of him (Siraj) to bring it up so at least a wider section of people know and the people sitting next to such people in the ground do better next time. It is something one must condemn. But I want to bring it up that everywhere people are differentiating people on different grounds, which is not right," concluded the Test specialist.

Despite the on-field drama, Siraj was one of India's top performers in the 2020/21 Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Australia, He returned with most wickets for the visiting side, ending with 13 scalps.

Virender Sehwag remains a big name in world cricket. Sehwag was part of the golden era in Indian cricket where he rubbed shoulders and shared the dressing room with some superstar cricketers such as Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid, MS Dhoni, etc.

Sehwag represented India in&nbsp;104 Tests, 251 ODIs and 19 T20Is and was part of India's glorious wins in the 2007 T20 World Cup and the 2011 ODI World Cup. However, Sehwag wouldn't have played the 50-over World Cup in 2011 had it not been for Sachin Tendulkar. The former Indian opener recently revealed he was taken aback by his ODI omission, during the 2007/08 CB series which India won under MS Dhoni, and Tendulkar's advice helped him from rethinking about his&nbsp;retirement from the 50-over format.

"In 2008 when we were in Australia, this question (of retirement) came to my mind. I made a comeback in the Test series, scored a 150. In the ODIs, I couldn't score that much in three-four attempts. So MS Dhoni dropped me from the playing XI then the thought of quitting ODI cricket came to my mind. I thought I will continue playing only Test cricket," Sehwag told Cricbuzz.

Thought of quitting ODI cricket after MS Dhoni dropped me, reveals former Indian opener Virender Sehwag

The IPL 2022 edition ended on May 29 (Sunday). There were plenty of memorable performances by uncapped players, veteran stars whereas some big names failed to get going and fell flat. The likes of Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, Ravindra Jadeja, Kieron Pollard, Glenn Maxwell and many other superstar cricketers failed to live upto expectations and had an ordinary run.

Thus, former Indian opener-turned-commentator Aakash Chopra picked Team India's T20 World Cup squad, for the mega event set to be held in Australia later this year, on the basis of Indian players' IPL 2022 performance. While Chopra named Hardik Pandya -- IPL 15's winning captain -- as India's skipper, he dropped Virat, Rohit, Rishabh Pant and Jadeja.

Among the veteran Indian players, the likes of Dinesh Karthik and Umesh Yadav were successful for Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) and Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), respectively. Now, Hardik is set for a return in Team India jersey as the white-ball side is set to host Temba Bavuma-led South Africa in a five-match T20I series, starting on June 09 in New Delhi. For the unversed, the series will mark the 28-year-old Hardik's return as he last played for the national side during the 2021 T20 World Cup. Ahead of his return, Little Master Sunil Gavaskar heaped praise on Hardik, post IPL 2022 final, and suggested his batting slot for Team India for the SA T20Is.

Speaking to&nbsp;Star Sports, batting legend said,&nbsp;"I think he'll probably be slotted at five or six. Just imagine, if India has a Hardik Pandya and a Rishabh Pant at five or six. They can probably swap around a little bit -- that is going to be some explosive combination from the 14th to the 20th over. In six overs, you can probably expect even maybe 100-120 runs. They are capable of doing that. So, that's going to be an exciting aspect. That's something I'm really looking forward to -- Rishabh Pant and Hardik Pandya batting at five or six."

The BCCI selection committee announced an 18-member Team India T20I squad for the forthcoming five-match series versus South Africa at home. In the KL Rahul-led Indian team, many regulars such as all-format skipper Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli and Jasprit Bumrah have been rested whereas some seniors have missed out while other key players such as Suryakumar Yadav and Ravindra Jadeja are injured.

Shikhar Dhawan was one notable omission in the young squad. While the senior player has been out of the T20I side since being dropped from the squad for the last year's World Cup, many thought a comeback was on the cards for him after amassing 460 runs for Punjab Kings (PBKS) in 14 league stage matches. Nonetheless, the selectors preferred youngsters in place of Dhawan as Ishan Kishan, Ruturaj Gaikwad, etc. made the cut. As per a report in InsideSport, Dhawan was informed about his non-selection before the team was announced by head coach Rahul Dravid.

“Shikhar has been a great servant of Indian cricket for over a decade. But in T20s, you have to give chances to youngsters who have been doing well. Rahul had to make the tough call and we all agreed. Shikhar was informed by Rahul before the team was announced on Sunday,” a senior BCCI official was quoted as saying by InsideSport.

MS Dhoni is a crowd-puller. The 40-year-old remains a big name in world cricket despite retiring from international cricket on August 15, 2020. The former Indian captain has a humongous fan-following across the globe. He not only led India to all major ICC titles, but also created a niche for himself with his unorthodox-yet-effective keeping skills, power-hitting, finishing knocks and helping many current superstar Indian cricketers' careers flourish.

Recently, Dhoni was seen in the ongoing IPL 2022 edition where he represented the Chennai Super Kings (CSK). While the Yellow Army failed to enter the playoffs, Dhoni's presence on the field continued to attract eyeballs.

CSK's throwdown specialist Kondappa Raj Palani recently narrated an unheard story where he was in awe of Dhoni's charisma and was even scolded by the&nbsp;legendary cricketer.

"The first time, the camp started when Dhoni retired. I saw him for the first time then. He asked if you were the throwers. He asked me to throw balls at him. The team was pleased after that. The net bowlers were speaking about his retirement. After two or three weeks, he came to play sidearm. Everybody was arriving," Palani said on the Chennai Super Kings website.

"Fleming, Hussey and everyone said Dhoni was coming and asked me to bowl carefully. The first two balls were wides. The next ball was a full toss. Dhoni came to me and said 'Stop looking at me and bowl'. He asked me to play naturally. I then started bowling wherever he wanted and then he was very happy. He started addressing me everyday since with my name," he added.

On the other hand, Palani's fellow throwdown specialist, Murugan, had a much smoother and easier encounter with Dhoni.

"He mostly asks me to bowl front foot. He used to say picking wickets is next. First, get the feel of it. We started giving him that," Murugan mentioned.

Dhoni, who has close to 5,000 runs in IPL, is set to return for thw 16th season next year. His ardent fans will certainly come in large numbers to support him and hope for CSK's revival in IPL 2023.

CSK's throwdown specialist Kondappa Raj Palani recently narrated an unheard story where he was in awe of Dhoni's charisma and was even scolded by the legendary cricketer.

Rishabh Pant has now become a regular for Team India across formats. While Pant made his name with his IPL heroics and was being seen as the next-big-thing in white-ball formats, the 24-year-old has achieved more success in Test cricket so far at the international level.

In 30 Tests, Pant has 1,920 runs at an average of 40.85 and has scored hundreds in England, Australia and South Africa. Thus, former Indian opener Virender Sehwag -- who also defied odds by doing exceeding well in red-ball format when many deemed him to be fit for the shorter forms of the game -- has made a big statement on Pant.&nbsp;

Sehwag stressed the importance of Test cricket and claimed that Pant won't be known for long if he only excels in white-ball formats but will etch his name in the history books by playing 100, or more, Tests for India.

“If he goes on to play 100+ Tests, his name would be etched in the history books forever. Only 11 (12) Indian cricketers have achieved this feat, and everyone can recall those 11 names,” Sehwag told Sports 18 while speaking&nbsp;about the Delhi Capitals (DC) skipper.

“Why does Virat Kohli emphasise so much on playing Tests? He knows that if he plays 100-150 or even 200 Tests, he will be immortalised in the record books,” Sehwag added.

In Indian cricket history, only 12 cricketers have played 100 or more Tests. The list includes Sachin Tendulkar, Dravid, VVS Laxman, Anil Kumble, Kapil Dev, Sunil Gavaskar, Dilip Vengsarkar, Sourav Ganguly, Virender Sehwag, Harbhajan Singh,&nbsp;Kohli and Ishant Sharma.&nbsp;

Pant was last seen in action on the 22-yard cricket strip during the IPL 2022 edition, while leading the Delhi franchise who ended fifth on the points table and missed out on qualifying for the playoffs with one victory less under their belt. He will now be KL Rahul's deputy during the India-South Africa T20Is at home, which gets underway on June 09.

Sehwag&nbsp;amassed 8586 runs in Tests averaging 49.34 at an whopping&nbsp;strike rate of 82.23 and also ended with 8,273 runs in ODIs at 35.05, striking at&nbsp;104.33
