Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma have had an ordinary run in IPL 2022 so far. While the former Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) has amassed only&nbsp;119 runs at 19.83 and a strike rate of 123.95 in seven outings, Mumbai skipper Rohit has 114 runs in an equal number of&nbsp;outings, at an average of less than 20.

Kohli fell for a golden duck in RCB's 18-run win over Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) in their last encounter whereas Team India and MI captain Rohit departed for a two-ball duck in his side's three-wicket loss to Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in match 33 of IPL 2022, on Thursday evening (April 21). In this way, he now also has most ducks in IPL history (14). Thus, both the Indian superstar batters have been far from their best. In addition, Kohli has&nbsp;played 100th successive innings, across formats, without a triple-figure score. Thus, the two batters' form is a concern for Team India going forward.&nbsp;

In a column with Betway, former England captain Kevin Pietersen came in support of Kohli and Rohit and further pointed out that these players have been cooked up by their national board. "Whereas Jos Buttler benefitted from a break during England's Test series in the West Indies, you've had the likes of Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli and Jonny Bairstow playing all formats and living in bubbles for months on end,” Pietersen said.

"That is not any way to maximise world-class talent. They've churned out money for their boards by fulfilling most matches in every format in the last couple of years and, as star players, they are under constant pressure with millions of people watching them,” Pietersen further added. "The cricket schedule is crazy. Even as a commentator, I’m working flat out. But, clearly, I’m not under the pressure that these guys are,” Pietersen argued.

"Honestly, I think these guys need a six-month break. Getaway to the US, to London, to wherever elsewhere travel is unrestricted. Clear your head, come back and rack up the runs again. It's unrealistic, but it would do some of these guys the world of good," Pietersen further opined.

It will be interesting to see how RCB uses Kohli for the rest of IPL 2022 whereas Rohit-starrer MI are on the brink of an early elimination. If Mumbai doesn't qualify, it will make sense for the franchise to rest Rohit so that he can rediscover his form going forward. Rohit has had runs for India in the recent past, however, it seems he also needs some time off in a&nbsp;year&nbsp;comprising T20 World Cup, to be held later this year in Australia.

Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma need a six-month break: Pietersen comes out in support of India's under-fire duo

England's Joe Root has been named the leading cricketer in the world, while South African women's team batter Lizelle Lee has been awarded the title of leading woman cricketer. Rohit had an exceptional summer at the top of the order for India, scoring 368 runs in four Tests at an average of 52.57. The India skipper scored a match-defining 127 at The Oval, his first Test century away from home. Root was named leading cricketer of the year after a historic 12 months in which he scored 1,708 Test runs in a calendar year, the third-most in history.

Lee was named the leading woman cricketer in the world after a dominant 2021, averaging 90.28 with the bat in ODI cricket, including a spectacular series against India in which she scored 288 runs in four innings.
Rizwan's T20 recognition came after a record-breaking 2021 in which he scored 1,329 runs at 72.88 in 27 T20s that included a century and 11 fifties. By passing 1,000 runs in a calendar year, he also became the first cricketer in the international game to achieve the feat.

Team India skipper Rohit Sharma, pacer Jasprit Bumrah among Wisden's five 'Cricketers of the Year'

Irfan Pathan had announced his arrival at international cricket with a bang. He made a mark with his swing, pace and yorkers during India's memorable 2003-04 Border-Gavaskar Trophy, in Australia, and was also a part of India's historic tour of Pakistan in early 2004.&nbsp;

During the tour, Pathan kept shining with the ball in key situations and also showed a glimpse of what was in store from him as a power-hitter. While his tour was memorable, playing a part in Sourav Ganguly-led India's 3-2 ODI series triumph and and a 2-1&nbsp;win in Tests, he had an embarrassing moment with none other than Master Blaster Sachin Tendulkar.&nbsp;

In his interaction with Vikram Sathaye on What the Duck, Pathan revealed the entire incident; leaving the host in splits.&nbsp;

He revealed, "I was in Pakistan. It was my second trip since I arrived. My plate was full of chicken biryani and nihari. At that time, there was an incident with Sachin Tendulkar. He walked in and saw my plate and sarcastically asked me 'Irfan, we are batting, right?' (although he knew we were to bowl first). Then he looked at my plate and casually said, "Oh, we are bowling? Okay" and quietly walked away (laughs).&nbsp;After that&nbsp;incident, I never used to sit and eat near him."

Throwback! 'My plate was full': When Irfan Pathan was left embarrassed in front of Sachin Tendulkar

Virat Kohli has dominated world cricket, especially since India's 2011 ODI World Cup win and following stalwart Sachin Tendulkar's international retirement. Kohli has been India's go-to-man whenever they need to address a batting collapse, across formats, and has bailed the team out on numerous occasions with fighting knocks, finishing touches and several memorable tons.

From 2012-2019, Kohli majorly dominated the scoring charts and has guided India to plethora of wins. However, the superstar cricketer and former Indian captain has been nothing close to his usual best with the bat -- in any formats -- since late 2019 despite scoring half-centuries at regular intervals. It is the triple-figure knocks which have evaded Kohli and, thus, former Pakistan cricketer Rashid Latif addressed the Indian's indifferent run and also mentioned a technical flaw in his approach while comparing him with the Master Blaster.

“When I speak about Virat, he always used to go across the stumps. But he never believed in date, stats, coaching. He is a great player but got caught. A bottom-hand player who goes across, he got caught there. That is why when the ball goes away, he would have a problem,” Latif said on his YouTube channel ‘Caught Behind’.

<section>
“Recently, Sri Lanka came to India for a Test series. The ball was kept low. On such low pitches, Sachin would never get out, whereas Virat did. Tendulkar would change his strategy. He would come inside the crease if it’s spinning too much, and vice-versa. Sachin has had this problem a few times – like Asif dismissed him in Karachi (2006), but most often he would adjust. So this is the difference if I have to compare (Kohli and Tendulkar). On poor pitches, there is no batsman better than Sachin," he added.

Anil Kumble has served Indian cricket with distinction. The wily leg-spinner not only returned with a plethora of wickets for Team India (956 scalps overall) but also bowled plenty of decisive and economical spells across formats, along with scoring some handy runs down the order.

In early 2016, Kumble became India's head coach for a year with skipper Virat Kohli at the helm. Despite success on the field, Kumble and Kohli's were reportedly the best as the latter's feedback on the former Indian captain led to his exit from the top post. Since then, a lot has been said and written about the strained relationship between Kohli-Kumble. Former BCCI CoA head Vinod Rai has now once again opened up on the whole saga and made a big claim that there were no such 'differences' between the two superstar cricketers.

There was nothing like the difference between Kumble and Kohli. Neither I had any such information nor I have written, " said Vinod Rai while in conversation with news agency ANI.

"The board did try to convince Virat Kohli but the selection of coach is done by Cricket's Advisory Committee (CAC). The CAC comprising Sachin Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly and VVS Laxman only selected Anil Kumble as coach earlier. I wrote this thing in the book when CAC was selecting the coach that you people should speak to the team and the coach because we were outsiders. If senior players like Sachin, Sourav and VVS speak to the players then the impact is different and if we speak, then it will not be that effective. So, these three spoke to the captain and the coach, " explained Vinod.

Nothing of this sort came to our notice. I have written in the book that this thing came to our notice in April and we took charge on 30th January. So, we did not get the chance to see it in the space of two months."

At present, both have moved on from the forgettable episode. While Kumble is the head coach of IPL franchise Punjab Kings (PBKS), Kohli's India captaincy era got over officially in early 2022. He had already resigned as the Royal Challengers Bangalore&nbsp;(RCB) captain last year.

Not correct to say there were differences between Virat Kohli, Anil Kumble, says ex-CoA chief Vinod Rai

Anil Kumble coached India for a year, from early 2016 to mid-2017. The former Indian captain's tenure was a quite a tale in itself. While he led India to considerable success across formats, his term came to an end unceremoniously after a fallout with then skipper Virat Kohli.

As a result, Kohli got the upper hand and Kumble was succeeded by ex all-rounder Ravi Shastri who later forged a lethal pair with the former. Former Auditor General (CAG)&nbsp;Vinod Rai reflected on Kumble's coaching saga. He&nbsp;revealed how he had to involve Master Blaster Sachin Tendulkar when he felt Kohli and Kumble weren't on the same page.

"See, I have on record said that we couldn’t have got a better coach than Kumble and we could have treated a cricketing legend like him much better. I find it intriguing that he was given a one-year term in 2016, while his predecessor (Ravi Shastri) was given two years term. Kumble was not only given one-year tenure but also there was no extension clause in his contract. Had there been an extension clause, I would have readily extended it," said Rai in conversation with&nbsp;FirstPost.

He further opined, "It was on this issue that Ram Guha was upset. He wanted us to automatically extend his term. Now, just imagine if we had extended the term, and somebody only to embarrass the CoA had gone to court, he could have easily stalled our move. So, I decided to follow the process and let Kumble be an automatic inclusion in the process."

Rai added, But when Virat Kohli raised the issue of younger players being intimidated by Kumble’s disciplinarian approach, I took the lead in speaking to Sachin Tendulkar. I saw myself as a rank outsider. Why would players listen to me? But if someone like Sachin (Tendulkar), Sourav (Ganguly) or VVS (Laxman) speaks to the team management or the players, there is a greater chance of a breakthrough. Still, I believe the entire episode could have been handled 100 times better."

Eventually, many firmly believe that the entire Kumble-Kohli saga could've been handled in a much better way. With the former leg spinner being one of India's biggest match-winners to date, his exit from the head coach position remains one of the forgettable chapters of Indian cricket.

With the former leg spinner being one of India's biggest match-winners to date, his exit from the head coach position remains one of the forgettable chapters of Indian cricket.

Deepak Hooda and Krunal Pandya had a major fallout while representing Baroda in the 2020/21 domestic season. It resulted in Deepak shifting base from Baroda to Rajasthan in the 2021/22 season. However, fate had other things in mind as the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) franchise roped in both of them in the IPL 2022 mega auction.

Deepak and Krunal's inclusion in the Lucknow franchise surely made heads turn. Since Lucknow's opening game in the ongoing 15th season, all eyes have been on their camaraderie and equation on the field. In the franchise's maiden outing, versus the Gujarat Titans (GT), both seemed to have moved on from their past fallout as they hugged each other on-field and were comfortable in each other's presence.

Dwelling on his equation with Krunal, Hooda&nbsp;told&nbsp;Dainik Jagran recently, "Krunal Pandya is like my brother, and brothers do fight. We are playing with one aim, which is to win games for LSG."

All eyes were on Hardik Pandya ahead of the IPL 2022 edition. There were many speculations whether he would don the role of an all-rounder or play only as a specialist batter-cum-captain for the new franchise, Gujarat Titans (GT).&nbsp;

After the opening two games for GT, Hardik has bowled his full quota of overs -- accounting for a scalp -- has shown maturity with the bat and as a leader. MSK Prasad, who was the chairman of selectors when Hardik was initially picked for Team India in early 2016, lavished praise on Hardik and said that 'wherever he does well, I feel proud like my own son has performed or done anything like that'.

“Whenever he does well, I feel proud and I feel like my own son has performed or done anything like that. It was very difficult to find a great all-rounder post the legendary Kapil Dev but someone who has got skills. The beauty about this boy is that his basics are very strong. His bowling basics, batting basics, fielding basics – everything is very strong. All that he needs to understand is to keep that part between his ears in a good stead and I am sure he will grow into a wonderful allrounder,” Prasad told cricket historian and broadcaster Boria Majumdar during his YouTube show.

"Now that he is not the same chubby-bubbly sort of a Hardik. Now he's married, settled down and got an added responsibility with Gujarat Titans. I'm sure it is definitely going to help him, Titans and Indian cricket. The way he led the other day – because I was there on the ground – he was very cool, calm and the manner in which he rotated the bowlers and placed fielders, everything was spot on. Even when the wickets were taken, he maintained his composure and I like that attitude," the former selector further pointed out.

When he does well, I feel proud: MSK Prasad names India player whose success elates him

Team India have produced several match-winners over the years. The list is a long one, which also includes the likes of former all-rounder Yuvraj Singh and ex-India captain MS Dhoni. While Yuvraj made his international debut before Dhoni, he played under the latter for the majority part of his career and the two formed a lethal batting pair in white-ball formats.

Both Yuvraj and Dhoni shared the dressing room for India during their victorious campaigns in the 2007 T20 World Cup and the 2011 ODI World Cup. While Yuvraj was the man in form during the entire 50-over World Cup, held in the subcontinent sans Pakistan, Dhoni took the onus upon himself to deliver the goods when the stakes were down for the Men in Blue in the tournament finale versus Sri Lanka, at the iconic Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai on April 2.

Recalling India's tremendous run in the 2011 ODI World Cup, hosts' then mental conditioning Paddy Upton made a big statement by claiming that not Yuvraj but Dhoni&nbsp;a 'massive high-pressure' player. "He (MS Dhoni) would do what he is the best in the world at – which is seeing a team home in a chase in the second innings in a white-ball game. He had delivered nothing in the eight games before the final. Yuvraj had done his bit, he had played his tournament. He was done, he was spent. That moment was set up for someone like Dhoni. There are very few players in the world who are genuine “massive high-pressure” players. Yuvraj Singh is not one of those, Dhoni is,” Upton wrote in his column for The Indian Express.

“The moment ‘t just a testimony to his leadership and courage, it spoke a lot about his relationship with Gary. Mind you, Gary didn’t have to stand up and have a conversation with Dhoni to discuss the merits and demerits of the move. It was just the two leaders of the team being on the same page. The knock on the glass, him pointing to himself, Gary’s nod… and it was done. I do remember very clearly when Dhoni walked down the stairs, I turned to Gary and said “Do you realise Dhoni is going there to fetch us the World Cup?” I had absolute conviction that Dhoni would come back with the trophy,” he said.

Hardik Pandya and KL Rahul are currently involved in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 edition where both the star cricketers are showcasing their cricketing skills and captaincy credentials to world cricket. They seemed to have got carried away: Rai recalls Hardik-Rahul's infamous appearance on a talk show

Anil Kumble served as Team India's head coach for a year, from early 2016 to mid-2017. While he had a successful run as the head coach of the senior men's team, his tenure ended unceremoniously following his infamous fallout with then captain Virat Kohli.

As a result, Kumble's tenure came to an end after India's massive 2017 Champions Trophy final loss, to Pakistan, and the former leg-spinner was replaced by Ravi Shastri at the top job. A lot has been said and written about Kohli's relationship with Kumble and how the two created differences, which led to the ouster of the latter.&nbsp;

In his book&nbsp;Not Just a Nightwatchman, former Auditor General (CAG)&nbsp;Vinod Rai&nbsp;has revealed that Kohli had stated that “young members of the Indian team felt intimidated by Kumble”. While Rai maintained that the relationship between Kohli and Kumble was quite strained and going downhill,&nbsp;things could've been handled in a much better way than how it finally turned out to be.

"In my conversations with the captain and team management, it was conveyed that Kumble was too much of a disciplinarian and hence the team members were not too happy with him. I had spoken to Virat Kohli on the issue and he did mention that the younger members of the team felt intimidated by the way he worked with them,” Rai has written in his book.

“We had long conversations with Kumble after he had returned from the UK. He was obviously upset about the manner in which the entire episode had panned out. A lot has changed in Indian cricket post the 2021 T20 World Cup, in the UAE. Since then, Rohit Sharma has taken charge of Team India across formats whereas Rahul Dravid succeeded Ravi Shastri as the head coach of the senior men's team. While the likes of Cheteshwar Pujara, Ajinkya Rahane, Ishant Sharma and Wriddhiman Saha have been dropped from the Test side, youngsters such as Rishabh Pant, Shreyas Iyer, Md Siraj and KL Rahul are rising in stature with each series.&nbsp;

Talking about Pant, the 24-year-old has seen massive growth in his international career since the India-Australia 2020-21 series Down Under. Since then, he has scored runs across all forms of the game and improved immensely as a wicketkeeper. Recently, India's batting coach Vikram Rathour heaped praise on the Indian youngster and feels that he is now a matured cricketer who cannot be dropped easily.&nbsp;

Rathour also feels that Pant has it in him to succeed MS Dhoni and become the next finisher for Team India. Following Dhoni's international retirement, the role of a finisher has been fulfilled by the likes of Hardik Pandya and Ravindra Jadeja, however, Rathour feels Pant is suited to make an impact lower down the order (despite being experimented to bat at No. 4).

Pant is currently involved with the Delhi Capitals (DC) in IPL 2022 edition. Under him, DC have won and lost a game each after their opening two encounters in the 15th season.

Rishabh Pant has become an all-format player for Team India. Things, however, weren't the same for the swashbuckling left-hander post India's 2019 ODI World Cup campaign. After IPL 2020, questions were raised for his shot selection, fitness and wicketkeeping skills as many former cricketers and experts slammed his approach towards the game.

Nonetheless, Pant answered his critics in style after the conclusion of the 13th IPL season, in the UAE. The 24-year-old got a chance in India's MCG Test versus Australia during the 2020-21 Border-Gavaskar Trophy and hasn't looked behind ever since. Since then, Pant has slammed six half-centuries and two tons in red-ball format, four fifties in ODIs and has played some vital cameos in the shortest format as well. Moreover, his keeping has improved leaps and bounds whereas he is also the Delhi Capitals (DC) captain in the IPL.

I was talking to Rohit bhai and Mahi ]Dhoni] bhai a little bit. But mostly I kept believing in myself."

"It was obviously very challenging. That was a low phase in my life. You feel good when you come from hard times and play like that (50 off 101 against England). But, at the same time, I do not think of either [fifties] too much. I just play on the merit of the ball. [However,] I did find that I could control my instincts better," Pant added.

'I was talking to Rohit Sharma, MS Dhoni' - Rishabh Pant recalls his tough phase before miraculous comeback

Virat Kohli remains the poster boy of Indian cricket despite not being the captain across formats. In mid-September, the superstar cricketer announced that he will resign as the shortest format's&nbsp;captain post India's campaign in the 2021 T20 World Cup, in the UAE.

Post the T20 WC, radical changes were made in the Team India setup. While Kohli was sacked as the ODI skipper, he also went onto step down as the Test captain in early 2022. Amid all this, he had already given up Royal Challengers Bangalore's (RCB) captaincy after Bengaluru's end of campaign in IPL 2021. Thus, resuming as a pure batter for India and the RCB franchise, Kohli's brand valuation has taken a dip as well.

According to a report filed by&nbsp;TimesofIndia, the 33-year-old Kohli's brand valuation has shrunk from around $238 million in 2020 to $186 million in the next year (2021). Despite the dip, the former India and RCB skipper continues to hold&nbsp;the top spot in the top celebrity endorser list. This is for the fifth consecutive time that he has retained the No. 1 spot&nbsp;in India's top celebrity endorser list, staying ahead of the likes of Ranveer Singh (second), Akshay Kumar (third), Alia Bhatt (fourth) and MS Dhoni (fifth). Moreover, India's full-time captain Rohit Sharma occupies the 13th spot (with brand value of USD 32.2 million).

On the other hand, Dhoni's brand valuation has also seen an increase (to $61 million).&nbsp;"There were rumours that Dhoni quit the Indian Premier League (IPL). But he turned it around by taking Chennai Super Kings (CSK) to a win and transitioning to the role of a mentor for the national team,” Aviral Jain, MD, Duff &amp; Phelps (A Kroll Business) told TOI. He further added, "Dhoni has become a timeless brand similar to Sachin Tendulkar."

“Brand value is directly proportional to eyeballs, focus and the chemistry the brand is able to create among its users and fans. More so in the case of a persona brand from the world of cricket,” said Harish Bijoor who is the founder of Harish Bijoor Consults.

Kohli No. 1 in top celebrity endorser list despite brand valuation dip, Dhoni's climbs to $61 million: Report

KL Rahul has become an all-format player for Team India in current times. While Rahul dons the role of an opener in Tests and T20Is, the right-hander plays in the middle-order for India in the 50-over format. However, he wasn't a regular starter in all forms of the game a few years back.&nbsp;

In the 2019 ODI World Cup, Rahul was part of India's middle-order before Shikhar Dhawan's injury promoted him as an opener along with Rohit Sharma. Rahul returned with 361 runs in his maiden 50-over World Cup, with a century and two fifties. Despite his good run with the willow in the showpiece event, Rahul was part of India's T20I, ODI and Test squads for the following&nbsp;West Indies tour, however, he was dropped from the playing XI in the white-ball series.

Rahul recently spilled the beans on his sudden omission from India's playing XI. In a chat with Gaurav Kapoor in the new season of Breakfast with Champions, Rahul said, "I remember in 2019, I think we played the World Cup and right after it, we went to the West Indies for a series. I played the World Cup, I did decently well and then we went into the series and I got dropped. I was messaging him, he said 'Come by the pool. I'm having a drink'. It was his 300th game the next day so he was very happy and he had some friends over. So I went. I was by the pool. He came, sat with me, spoke to me that why are you not playing."

Rahul then revealed how Universe Boss Chris Gayle came to his aid and lifted his spirits. "You know, I obviously was frustrated because I played the World Cup and I'm not playing this. Makes no sense. So, I was just talking to him and he's like 'See you can always say that you're not playing because of 100 other reasons but it's in your hands whether you play or not. If 70 is not enough, get 150. If you are getting 150, get 200 if that's not enough. That's how you need to look at things. If a 600-run IPL season is not enough, then get 800. Or like you're getting 50s, 60s in the World Cup, you should have converted that and gotten 100-120s. Then no one has the power to drop you'," he further added.

KL Rahul recalls being sidelined despite a good CWC'19 for India, reveals how Chris Gayle lifted his spirits

The IPL 2022 edition is set to get underway on March 26. Ahead of the new season, the ardent fans are excited to see how the two new teams shape up and compete with the rest. While KL Rahul will lead the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG), the Gujarat Titans (GT) will be led by local boy Hardik Pandya.

Ahead of the 15th season, all eyes are on Hardik as it remains to be seen if he will return back as an all-rounder. Since the 2021 T20 World Cup, Hardik hasn't been in the scheme of things for Team India, mainly due to the all-rounder working on his fitness to return back to bowling in full flow. In the last two IPL seasons, Hardik didn't bowl a single over for the Mumbai Indians (MI). However, ex-Team India head coach Ravi Shastri feels the 28-year-old needs to bowl to be able to return back in the playing XI for India in white-ball formats.

"In the top five, there's a lot of muscle there. If anyone's occupying the position Nos. 5, 6 onwards, he'll have to bring that extra department to the game. That is why from Hardik's point of view, from India's point of view, from the Gujarat team's point of view, it's extremely important that he strings those two or three overs together because if he does and bowls with even limited success, he becomes an automatic choice in the Indian team," said Shastri to&nbsp;Espncricinfo.

"I think the all-rounder's position at No. 6 for sure. Ideally, someone in the top-five who can bowl two or three overs. That takes the pressure off the captain. It gives him then six and a half bowlers from whom he can choose. That will be one area I'll be looking at very closely. And of course the fast bowling and fielding. I'm not really worried about the batting. Batting is there," he added.

'He'll have to bring....': Shastri claims Hardik needs to bowl in IPL 2022 to make India comeback

The race for the semi-finals have intensified with each passing day in the ongoing ICC Women's World Cup in New Zealand. While Meg Lenning-led Australia were the first team to book a slot in the semis, they have been joined by South Africa as the Proteas Women made it to the top four following their washout encounter versus West Indies on Thursday (March 24).

Talking about the West Indies-South Africa clash, only 10.5 overs of play was possible before rain played spoilsport to allow the South Africans to go through. West Indies also moved up to occupy the third spot in the points table and remain alive in the semi-finals race, however, they&nbsp;will need either India or England to lose a game to qualify. Before talking about Mithali Raj-led India's chances for the semi-finals, here's a look at the points table:

With Australia and South Africa already through to the semis, the remaining two spots have three contenders in the form of West Indies, England and India. Pakistan is&nbsp;out of the tournament whereas Bangladesh&nbsp;have an almost impossible task even if they win both games (against Australia and England, respectively) as their NRR is very poor. Hosts New Zealand need a humongous win and, hence, are almost out.&nbsp;

Defending champions England need to win their remaining game to get to 8 points and hope India lose to South Africa. Finally coming to the two-time runners-up Women in Blue, the result in the West Indies-South Africa game is&nbsp;a huge blow to India's chances. They not only need a win in their last league stage encounter -- versus South Africa -- but&nbsp;even with a victory, India might lose out on a semi-final slot as England have a better NRR after a thumping&nbsp;win versus Pakistan.&nbsp;A defeat against the Proteas and England's win will knockout Mithali &amp; Co.

EXPLAINED! How things have complicated for India in CWC 2022 semi-finals race after SA-WI washout

The IPL 2022 edition is nearing its commencement and the excitement is on another level. With two more teams joining the cash-rich league, the upcoming season is expected to raise the bar and also further increase the popularity of the T20 league worldwide.

Ahead of the first ball of the 2022 edition, which will be played between defending champions Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) on March 26, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) secretary&nbsp;Jay Shah&nbsp;has confirmed that the revenue from sponsorships for the 15th&nbsp;season is all set to surpass&nbsp;the INR 1000 crore mark (INR 10 billion).

For the unversed, IPL 2022 will also be the first-ever season where the cash-rich league&nbsp;will see sponsorship for the Purple Cap and Orange Cap. In fact, the BCCI has&nbsp;sold as many as 9 sponsorship slots for the forthcoming season.

“This clearly shows the value of IPL as a brand. We are absolutely delighted with these new sponsorship deals. This year we have clocked the highest ever sponsorship revenues. For the record for the 1st time, we will be crossing the 1000 cr revenue mark from&nbsp;IPL Sponsorships&nbsp;for a single season," Shah said while speaking to Inside Sport.

In a chat with the&nbsp;Times of India, the BCCI secretary had stated that such an influx of money is good for the sport in India. In addition, he&nbsp;assured that&nbsp;the earnings will be meant for the upliftment of Indian cricket.

<section>
"Doing our best to acquire the justified value that a brand like IPL warrants is definitely on top of my mind. At the same time, we will also maintain complete transparency and that is one of the reasons why the media rights will be awarded through an e-auction," Shah told&nbsp;TOI. "You can gauge the popularity of the league and the confidence of the investors from the interest it generated and the valuation that the two teams attracted".

The IPL 2022 edition is nearing its commencement and the excitement is on another level. With two more teams joining the cash-rich league, the upcoming season is expected to raise the bar and also further increase the popularity of the T20 league worldwide. Ahead of the first ball of the 2022 edition, which will be played between defending champions Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) on March 26, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) secretary Jay Shah has confirmed that the revenue from sponsorships for the 15th season is all set to surpass the INR 1000 crore mark (INR 10 billion). For the unversed, IPL 2022 will also be the first-ever season where the cash-rich league will see sponsorship for the Purple Cap and Orange Cap. In fact, the BCCI has sold as many as 9 sponsorship slots for the forthcoming season. We are absolutely delighted with these new sponsorship deals. This year we have clocked the highest ever sponsorship revenues. For the record for the 1st time, we will be crossing the 1000 cr revenue mark from IPL Sponsorships for a single season," Shah said while speaking to Inside Sport. In addition, he assured that the earnings will be meant for the upliftment of Indian cricket. "Doing our best to acquire the justified value that a brand like IPL warrants is definitely on top of my mind. At the same time, we will also maintain complete transparency and that is one of the reasons why the media rights will be awarded through an e-auction," Shah told TOI. "You can gauge the popularity of the league and the confidence of the investors from the interest it generated and the valuation that the two teams attracted". Thus, it seems that IPL 2022 is already headed to be a blockbuster season even ahead of its commencement.

IPL revenue to cross INR 10-billion mark for first time ever, confirms BCCI Secretary Jay Shah

After the end of the second and penultimate Test between hosts Pakistan and Australia, the series scoreline remains 0-0. While the series opener was a run-fest in Rawalpindi, the pitch at Karachi also failed to provide a result as the two teams have shifted focus to the series finale, which will get underway at the Gadaffi Stadium, Lahore on March 21.

Ahead of the third and final Test, former Pakistan cricketer Aquib Javed has slammed the Ramiz Raja-led Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) for the pitches it has produced and asked them to take a leaf from the curators in India. In this regard, he said on his Youtube channel, "Why go anywhere else? I would say find out from the curators in Mumbai, Bangalore, Chennai etc how they prepare the turners on which Indian spinners dominate. I am surprised until now Pakistan has not been able to produce pure turning tracks, which will help our spinners."

Thus, Javed has asked PCB to learn from the Indian curators in preparing turning pitches which would benefit the hosts. In the recently-concluded India-Sri Lanka Test series, in India, Rohit Sharma &amp; Co. whitewashed the Lankans despite not playing on rank-turners but on pitches which did offer adequete help for the spinners and also led to pacers chipping in with regular scalps. Thus, it will be interesting to see what kind of a surface is prepared for the Pakistan-Australia Test series finale.

MS Dhoni remains a big name in world cricket. Ever since his international retirement, his ardent fans eagerly wait for the 40-year-old's presence on the 22-yard cricket strip during the IPL. Ahead of the IPL 2022 edition, set to be held in India, Dhoni opened up on his fascination for jersey number 7 and revealed why he sports the same&nbsp;number&nbsp;since his early days in international cricket.

For the unversed, Dhoni sports the No. 7 jersey since he made his debut for Team India. Even in the IPL, the superstar cricketer has donned the same&nbsp;number -- for Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and now-defunct Rising Pune Supergiants (RPS). Thus, the wicketkeeper-batter revealed why he likes to retain&nbsp;the exact&nbsp;jersey number.

Speaking at a CSK&nbsp;event on Wednesday (March 16), the ex-Team India captain Dhoni revealed the "simple reason" behind choosing the specific shirt number.

"A lot of people initially thought that 7 is a lucky number for me and all of that. But I chose the number for a very simple reason. I was born on the 7th of July. So it's the 7th day of the 7th month, that was the reason. Rather than getting to all the different things as to what number is a good number and all, I thought I will use my date of birth as the number," Dhoni said.

"A lot of people said 7 is a neutral number and even if it doesn't work for you, it doesn't really go against you. That also I added to my answer. I am not very superstitious about it, but it's one number that is close to my heart and I have kept it over the years with me," he added.

R Ashwin ended the India-Sri Lanka Test series with 12 wickets. With this, the 35-year-old wily-spinner's Test wicket-tally now reads 442, being the eighth-highest overall. Among Indians, he surpassed Kapil Dev's wicket-tally (434) and became the second-highest, only after former captain and coach Anil Kumble.&nbsp;

For the unversed, Kumble's tally is 619. He, thus, has a sizeable lead over Ashwin but Little Master Sunil Gavaskar feels the off-spinner has it in him to break Kumble's tally. In a recent interaction, the former Indian opener explained why he feels Ashwin can do the unthinkable and go past Kumble's magical number.&nbsp;

Mithali Raj-led India have had a topsy-turvy ride so far in the ongoing ICC Women's World Cup. The two-time runners-up thrashed Pakistan in their tournament-opener before falling flat against hosts New Zealand. India bounced back in style versus the daunting&nbsp;West Indies line-up before losing to England in their fourth outing in the showpiece event in New Zealand.

On Wednesday (March 16), India faced defending champions England at Bay Oval, Mount&nbsp;Maunganui. Opting to bowl first, England rode on&nbsp;Charlotte Dean's 4 for 23 as the big guns such as Smriti Mandhana, Harmanpreet Kaur, Mithali, Deepti Sharma and the likes fell flat as India were dismissed for 134 in 36.2 overs. In reply, England finished the run-chase with four wickets in hand in 31.2 overs.&nbsp;Natalie Sciver's 45 and skipper Heather Knight's 53 led the charge of England as they finally opened their account after three successive defeats.

After the defeat, India find themselves in a tight spot to enter the semi-finals of the CWC 2022 edition. With three big games left, Mithali &amp; Co. will need to revamp at the earliest to finish at the top four. Here's how they can make it to the semi-finals despite the England drubbing:

For the unversed, a&nbsp;total of 4 wins are deemed enough to qualify for the knockouts. Thus, India need two more wins -- from three games -- to enter the semis. With India to play Australia, Bangladesh and South Africa, respectively, they are still very much in chance to enter the next round even if they lose to the invincibles and so far unbeaten team Australia. As long as the Women in Blue do not lose by a huge margin versus the Aussies, wins against the other two opponents should&nbsp;be just enough&nbsp;to enter the semi-finals. Nonetheless, the face-offs versus the Bangla Tigers and South Africa won't be a cakewalk by any means whatsoever.

Talking about Bangladesh and South Africa, the former has only one win -- having beaten Pakistan -- whereas the Proteas are&nbsp;unbeaten, so far,&nbsp;after three outings. Thus, India have their task cut out to win at least two and not lose any game by a big margin.

Above all, they need to address their inconsistency and pull up their socks to progress ahead and become serious contenders.

After the England loss, Mithali said at&nbsp;the post-match presentation, "We definitely didn't have partnerships and it didn't go our way despite getting what we wanted after losing the toss. When you lose you always think you are short on runs. Getting 200 could have had the match go either way. Every game we've done well as a fielding unit. It is a department where we have improved. EXPLAINED! Here's how Mithali Raj's India can make it to CWC 2022 semi-finals after England drubbing

Virat Kohli's indifferent run with the bat continued in the just-concluded India-Sri Lanka Test series. In the two-match Test series at home, the 33-year-old former Indian captain managed only 81 runs -- at an average of 27 -- without a single fifty-plus score as his century drought continues at the highest level.&nbsp;

Kohli's last hundred at the international level came in late 2019. Since then, he has scored plenty of fifties but a big score continues to evade him. With another below-par series, the right-hander's ardent fans' wait for his 71st international ton has extended. Amid all this, Kohli's childhoood coach Rajkumar Sharma has a message for his pupil. Raj wants his student to return to his cricket academy, in Delhi, and rework on his basics in order to deliver at his usual best.

During the 2006 Champions Trophy, Dhoni made a vital 23-ball 28 in Rahul Dravid &amp; Co.'s face-off versus Ricky Ponting's Australia, in Mohali, but made heads turn with a stunning reverse sweep off Nathan Bracken in India's final over.

Talking about the India-Aus face-off, Dravid-led side's 249/8 was not much of a challenge for the Aussies as the Men in Yellow chased down the score with six wickets and 26 balls to spare. When India's Test squad was announced for the ongoing home series versus Sri Lanka, a lot of changes came into place with many senior players being shown the door. The likes of Cheteshwar Pujara, Ajinkya Rahane, Ishant Sharma and Wriddhiman Saha were dropped as the BCCI selectors stressed on focusing on younger breed of players for grooming them in the purest format.

Despite being dropped, the doors have not been shut for Pujara and Rahane as per chief selector Chetan Sharma's statement. However, the duo have been demoted to Grade B, from Grade A, category in BCCI's central contracts list. On the other hand, Ishant and Saha are out-of-favour and it seems the two won't be in the scheme of things for Team India going forward. While Saha has been told that Rishabh Pant and KS Bharat will be preferred for the keeper's slot in whites, Ishant's future also looks gloomy.

Even though Ishant-Saha are out of contention, at least for now, they feature in BCCI contracts list. Former Indian opener-turned-commentator Aakash Chopra explained why the pair have a central contract.

"Ishant Sharma and Wriddhiman Saha's names are also there in BCCI's central contracts. In fact, Ishant Sharma is at 3 crores. Are you wondering why? Why was Saha given a central contract when you have told him that you are not going to select him at all?" said the cricketer-turned-commentator on his&nbsp;YouTube&nbsp;channel.

"It seems Ishant Sharma also has an extremely limited role left in Test cricket, so why is he in the 3-crores contract and not 1 crore? These are things that you wonder?&nbsp; These are the contracts from October 2021 to the upcoming September. That is why Saha has the right. He was India's player in this contract period. He scored runs for India in December, that is why his name is there in this list, same goes for Ishant Sharma, he was playing regularly," he opined.

Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli and Jasprit Bumrah remain the highest earners whereas the likes of Shreyas Iyer, Md Siraj and Axar Patel have been promoted. R Ashwin created history during India's massive win over Sri Lanka in the first Test in Mohali. During the course of the game, Ashwin surpassed Kapil Dev's wicket-tally (434) to become the country's second-highest wicket-taker in Tests, now only behind Anil Kumble (619).

With 436 wickets in 85 Tests, the 35-year-old Ashwin has played a huge role in India's dominance in whites, especially at home. Ahead of the second and final Test versus Sri Lanka, which will be a day-night encounter at the iconic M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru, the wily offie shared the role of former Indian batter and women's team coach WV Raman in his growth as a cricketer.

In 2006, Ashwin made his first-class debut for Tamil Nadu. Back then, Raman was the coach and the World Cup-winner recently spilled the beans on the former's role in his career in an interview posted by the BCCI.&nbsp;

“When I made my debut, I had walked into the Chepauk stadium and Raman was the coach. (He was) a hard taskmaster and a lot of people feared having conversations with him. So, we were going through this practice session one day and he was giving these fielding sessions. But the amount of pressure he used to inflict on people who were throwing the ball on the top of the stumps was incredible,” Ashwin recalled.

“If you didn't throw the ball at the top of the stumps, he would just have a go at you. This kept happening for 10 days, 12 days, 2 weeks, 3 weeks, and we got a little comfortable. He used to prod me at the net, I used to question him and I didn't really have fear speaking in the team meeting," he further opined.

"One day, he just took me to the side and said, 'Ashwin, you've just come into the side. I appreciate you speaking in the team meetings, but you also need to understand why we say certain things. We say it with the intent to make sure that once you go to the Indian team, you are not found wanting with your basics'. And that really opened the floodgates for me and Raman forever. Because I knew this man had the best intent in place for anybody who walked into the ground inside this team,” added Ashwin.

Ashwin is currently gearing up for India's second and final Test versus Sri Lanka, starting on Saturday (March 12). The veteran will hope to continue his merry run in whites and lead India to a 2-0 series whitewash over the Asian neighbours.

'He was a hard taskmaster, a lot of people feared....' - R Ashwin on ex-India batter's role in his growth

Rohit Sharma-led Team India was clinical in the Test series opener versus Sri Lanka, in Mohali, to register a massive win, by an innings and 222 runs. With this, India gained an unassailable 1-0 lead in the two-match series and will now go for the kill in the final Test, which gets underway on March 12 at M Chinnaswamy Stadium, Bengaluru.

Ahead of the second and final Test, which will be a pink-ball contest, Rohit Sharma and off-spinner R Ashwin have a few milestones in sight. For the unversed, former skipper Virat Kohli is India's leading run-getter in day-night encounters in whites. Kohli has 241 runs in 3 Tests, including a ton (which remains his last triple-figure knock at the highest level), whereas his predecessor Rohit is at the second spot. Hitman is 129 runs behind (112) and, thus, will hope for a big score to surpass Kohli, unless the latter also manages a daddy hundred.

Ind vs SL, 2nd Test: Rohit Sharma eyes Virat Kohli's record, R Ashwin on cusp of achieving big feats

Rohit Sharma-led Team India produced an emphatic and flawless performance in the first Test versus Sri Lanka in Mohali. Right from the word go, everything clicked for Rohit &amp; Co. as they emerged on top courtesy a massive win, by an innings and 222 runs.

Opting to bat first, India posted 574-8 decl. and dismissed the Dimuth Karunaratne-led Sri Lankans for a paltry 174 and 178 with R Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja and Mohammed Shami chipping in with majority of wickets. While Jadeja returned with 175 not out and a nine-wicket haul in the match, Rishabh Pant also continued to grow in stature in whites with an attacking 96 and three vital dismissals behind the stumps. Thus, veteran keeper-batter Dinesh Karthik has heaped praise on Pant ahead of the second and final Test between both sides,&nbsp;at the iconic M Chinnaswamy Stadium, Bengaluru.&nbsp;

India and New Zealand locked horns with each other in match 8 of the ongoing ICC Women's World Cup, at the Seddon Park, Hamilton, on Thursday (March 10). After a spirited win over arch-rivals Pakistan, by 107 runs, Mithali Raj-led Indian eves were expected to get a tougher competition from the home side, who eventually beat them by 62 runs to now have two wins from three encounters.

The Indian bowlers managed an early breakthrough, after Mithali &amp; Co. opted to bowl first, but couldn't stop the Kiwi top and middle-order from setting up a good score. At one point, the White Ferns were oncourse to get beyond the 280-run mark, India restricted them to 260-9 in 50 overs. Pooja Vastrakar's 4-fer stood tall but Jhulan Goswami also remained economical (9-0-41-1). She also accounted for a wicket, with a peach of a yorker to dismiss Katey&nbsp;Martin. In the last over of NZ's innings, Goswami's top-notch yorker led to Martin's departure (41) and the latter also acknowledged her with a fist-pump.

In the run-chase of 261, India were never in the hunt due to a slow and timid approach by the batters. Harmanpreet Kaur's 63-ball 71 was the only shining aspect whereas the likes of Mithali and Yastika Bhatia struck at below 60 and 50, respectively, to add pressure on the scoreboard.

After the defeat, Indian captain Mithali&nbsp;said at the post-match presentation, "I think after those early wickets, they got a good partnership going and it seemed like 280 would be on the cards. But we did well to pull things back at the end. It was a chaseable score, provided the top order managed the run rate properly. We needed one of the batters to bat deep. There was a lot of extra bounce under lights, nothing unplayable but we could have done better. The batting needs to get better. The bowlers have done well today, they did well last game too. The batting has to step up."

India will next face West Indies on March 12 (Saturday), at the same venue.

The Indian bowlers managed an early breakthrough, after Mithali & Co. opted to bowl first, but couldn't stop the Kiwi top and middle-order from setting up a good score. At one point, the White Ferns were oncourse to get beyond the 280-run mark, India restricted them to 260-9 in 50 overs. Pooja Vastrakar's 4-fer stood tall but Jhulan Goswami also remained economical (9-0-41-1). She also accounted for a wicket, with a peach of a yorker to dismiss Katey Martin. In the last over of NZ's innings, Goswami's top-notch yorker led to Martin's departure (41) and the latter also acknowledged her with a fist-pump. S Sreesanth announced his retirement from all forms of cricket on Wednesday evening (March 09). The discarded Indian pacer represented the national team in 90 internationals (27 Tests, 53 ODIs and 10 T20Is).&nbsp;

The 39-year-old was part of MS Dhoni-led Indian team's title-wins in the 2007 T20 World Cup and 2011 ODI World Cup. Sreesanth's best performances came in India's maiden Test win in South Africa (in 2006) and he was also a part of the Rahul Dravid-led side's Test series triumph in England, in mid-2007. Following the IPL 2013 spot-fixing scandal, his career took a massive downfall. He had restarted his career&nbsp;recently&nbsp;after successfully overturning&nbsp;a life ban from the sport for his involvement in the spot-fixing saga. Thus, he made a&nbsp;sensational comeback in the action-packed edition of the&nbsp;Ranji Trophy before&nbsp;calling it quits soon.
