Babar has been one of the consistent performers for Pakistan across formats over the last few years and has already established his credentials as one of the best in the world. Virat Kohli, Anushka Sharma respond after Kevin Pietersen sends message of support to former India captain

Former Pakistan pacer Shoaib Akhtar has slammed Virat Kohli's critics and come out in defence of the senior India batter amid criticism from all corners over his poor form. Kohli has been facing the heat from fans, experts and former cricketers as he continues to struggle to deliver for the Indian team across all formats of the game. Kohli has been enduring a lean patch with the willow for a while now.

His last century in international cricket came over 900 days ago in November 2019. He has since failed to breach the triple-figure mark in any format of the game and has been stuck on 70 centuries in international cricket. Kohli was enjoying incredible consistency and was breaking records for fun at one point in his career but his form has dipped sharply over the last couple of years.

After an average campaign in IPL 2022, Kohli made his comeback for the Indian team in their ongoing tour of England and has failed to spark a turnaround. He has so far managed a shambolic 59 runs in his last 5 innings for India against England in what has been a disastrous tour for him with several former cricketers and experts questioning his spot in India's T20I team.

However, Kohi has found support from Akhtar, who believes the Indian star is one of the greatest players in the present era and has been one of the best batters in the world in the last ten years. Highlighting his 70 international centuries, Akhtar said it's no small feat and not everyone has the right to criticise Kohli.

"I am hearing a lot of criticism surrounding Virat Kohli. People are telling me that Kohli is over, he won't be able to do anything, and I tell them that Kohli is the greatest player in the world over the last 10 years. Now in the last 1-2 years, where apparently he has not been good enough, it is not like he has not scored runs," Akhtar said in a video on his YouTube channel.

Also Read: Virat Kohli responds to Babar Azam's tweet after Pakistan skipper lends support amid his lean patch However, Kohi has found support from Akhtar, who believes the Indian star is one of the greatest players in the present era and has been one of the best batters in the world in the last ten years. "I don't understand how people could even think about the prospect of dropping Kohli. I respect Kapil Dev, and it is his opinion, he is a legend so he can say it, but no one else can say it. As a Pakistani, I support Kohli because scoring 70 hundreds is no small feat, only a great player can do this," he added. Also Read: 1,000 days without an international century? From Rohit Sharma to Babar Azam: How cricket fraternity has reacted to Virat Kohli's poor form

Virat Kohli has been making the headlines due to his poor returns with the bat. While his century-drought continues, since late 2019, the right-hander is now even struggling to cross the fifty-run mark in India's ongoing tour of England.

In the Edgbaston Test, Kohli returned with scores of 11 and 20. He was rested for the T20I series opener before he returned for the last two games, scoring 1 and 11, respectively. In the first ODI, Kohli was not part of the playing XI due to groin injury before he made a comeback in the second and penultimate ODI, at Lord's on Thursday (July 14), where he only managed a 25-ball 16 in Men in Blue's moderate 247-run chase.

Before the 2nd ODI, BCCI chief Sourav Ganguly opined on Kohli's poor run of form and lavished praise on the former Indian captain.

'This too shall pass' - Babar Azam wins hearts with his tweet for Virat Kohli, backs him to end lean patch

Virat Kohli and Babar Azam are two of the biggest batters in modern-day cricket. While there's no doubting that Kohli's form has gone down considerably in the last few years, Babar has been making heads turn with his consistency across formats.

If overall numbers are compared, Babar is way behind Kohli due to the lesser number of years in international cricket. At present, Babar has 9,979 runs whereas Kohli's tally is 23,693 with 70 hundreds overall. Meanwhile, Babar has 24 centuries under his belt. However, the 27-year-old Pakistan captain is miles ahead of Kohli in terms of current form. Thus, Pakistan's opening batter Imam-ul-Haq made a glaring remark while comparing Kohli and Babar. The southpaw was quick to point out that Kohli is a legend, however, he wants his best friend and captain to end with 3,000-4,000 more runs than the Indian star batter after the end of his international career.

Hardik Pandya has had a stellar time since IPL 2022. In the 15th IPL season, which saw him make a comeback at the competitive level after last year's T20 World Cup, Hardik returned with his best-ever tally as a batter (487 runs) and claimed eight scalps, including a match-winning three-fer in the season-finale as Gujarat Titans (GT) won their maiden championship on debut.

Hardik's stocks rose considerably after leading Gujarat to a historic title as captain. Making a comeback for India in the home T20Is versus South Africa, the all-rounder fulfilled both roles and was also Rishabh Pant's deputy. In the India-England T20Is, the 28-year-old scored his maiden fifty in the format. Hence, he is on a roll, however, question marks remain on his ability to bowl his full quota of overs in ODIs. So far, he has bowled regularly in T20Is, nonetheless, it remains to be seen if he can complete his full overs in the 50-over format.

In this regard, Hardik-led Gujarat franchise's head coach Ashish Nehra made an interesting remark. On top of that, if he bowls, it will be a bonus. But you can’t keep him as your fifth bowler in T20 or 50 overs. He can only be your sixth bowler," Nehra was quoted as saying by Telegraph India.

'Even he won’t......' - Ashish Nehra on whether Hardik Pandya can bowl 10 overs in ODIs

After much wait, the BCCI selection committee -- headed by Chetan Sharma -- has named the India T20I squad for the upcoming tour of West Indies, which commences on July 22. While the tour will kick off with three ODIs, where Shikhar Dhawan will lead a second-stringed side, regular captain Rohit Sharma will return to take charge of the side during the five T20Is.

The five T20Is will start from July 29 as the selection committee announced a strong 18-member squad, sans Virat Kohli and Jasprit Bumrah. A lot was said and written about Kohli and whether he should be skipping series despite his poor form, however, he has not been named along with premier pacer Bumrah. The duo have been rested, as per PTI, nonetheless, there is no such mention in the BCCI release and tweet.

WI T20Is: No Virat Kohli and Jasprit Bumrah as R Ashwin, KL Rahul return in Rohit Sharma-led squad

Indian pacer Jasprit Bumrah was on fire in the first ODI between India and England, at The Oval, London on Tuesday (July 12). During the three-match ODI series opener, Bumrah returned with 6 for 19 as he single-handedly wreaked havoc as Jos Buttler & Co. were dismissed for a paltry 110 in 25.4 overs before India chased down the target with ten wickets in hand.

After Bumrah's heroics, he reclaimed the No. 1 spot in ICC ODI Rankings for bowlers. He had lost the top spot to New Zealand seamer Trent Boult in February 2020, however, the Indian pace spearhead is back at the top with many former cricketers hailing him to be the best bowler across formats. Former England captain-turned-commentator Nasser Hussain lavished praise on Bumrah and termed him the best all-format bowler at present times. In this regard, former Pakistan skipper Salman Butt also joined the bandwagon and responded to the recent claim.

"See, Shaheen (Afridi) hasn't played as much cricket but he is among the very best. He is no less than him (Bumrah). In fact, Shaheen, with experience, will only get better, and then he has more pace and offers a different angle. See, both are world cricket's finest and watching them bowl is an exciting experience. It's great fun to watch both Bumrah and Shaheen perform, and the way they bowl with the new ball, it feels as if a wicket can go down at anytime. You don't get this feeling watching any other bowler," Butt said on his YouTube channel.

At present, Bumrah has 128 Test, 119 ODI, and 69 T20Is scalps. On the other hand, Shaheen has accounted for 95, 62 and 47 victims in 24 Tests, 32 ODIs and 40 T20Is, respectively.

ENG vs IND: When and where to watch England vs India 2nd ODI match - IST time and streaming details

Rohit Sharma-led India played England in the ODI series opener at the Kennington Oval, London on Tuesday (July 12). The visitors demolished the hapless Jos Buttler-led side and won the game by ten wickets, with less than 50 overs being bowled overall, to take a 1-0 lead in the process.

While Jasprit Bumrah (6 for 19) and skipper Rohit (58-ball 76 not out) were exceptional for the Men in Blue, Md Shami and Prasidh Krishna were also among the wickets whereas Shikhar Dhawan played a sedate knock to stitch an unbeaten 114-run opening stand with his captain. Speaking of Virat Kohli, whose form remains a cause of concern, the 33-year-old former skipper wasn't part of India's playing XI due to a slight niggle. Thus, the England fan club, i.e. the Barmy Army took this as a chance to troll Kohli.

However, Bharat Army -- Indian counterparts -- were quick to respond and trolled the Barmy Army in an epic manner. Here's the banter which caught the attention of many on the social media platform Twitter:

'You decide': England captain Jos Buttler irked by reporter's question on Jasprit Bumrah after 6-wicket haul

India faced England in the ODI series opener at the Kennington Oval, London on Tuesday (July 12). After clinching the three T20Is, 2-1, Rohit Sharma-led India carried on with the momentum and hammered Jos Buttler & Co. by ten wickets to take a 1-0 lead in the process.

Opting to bowl first, everything clicked for India as they quickly reduced England to 26 for 5 before bundling them out for a paltry 110 in 25.2 overs, with Jasprit Bumrah returning with a fine 6 for 19. In reply, openers Rohit (56-ball 76*) and Shikhar Dhawan (31 not out) remained unbeaten as their unbroken 114-run stand completed the formalities for the visitors, in 18.4 overs.

During his unbeaten knock at The Oval, one of the Indian captain's six hit a young spectator in the crowd, resulting in the proceedings coming to a halt briefly.
"It seems someone in the crowd may have gotten hit by this six from Rohit Sharma. Fingers crossed… nobody is hurt," said England's Michael Atherton. Ravi Shastri then added: "Yes, looks that way.
At the post-match presentation, Rohit said, "Looking at the overhead conditions and the pitch, the toss was a right call to make. We used the conditions upfront really well. We never worry about the conditions because we have got the guys who can just come out and use those conditions. There was some swing and seam upfront and we exploited them well. When you play in such conditions, you have to understand the assistance and have field placements accordingly. We knew our bowlers could swing the ball both ways and hence had that kind of field."

During the run-chase, Rohit looked in command and was in full flow from the word go. During his unbeaten knock at The Oval, one of the Indian captain's six hit a young spectator in the crowd, resulting in the proceedings coming to a halt briefly. The way Rohit is looking towards that area, he might have got the message it's probably hit someone". Fortunately, no serious damage was done to the young girl. At the post-match presentation, Rohit said, "Looking at the overhead conditions and the pitch, the toss was a right call to make. We used the conditions upfront really well.
Virat Kohli remains a huge topic of discussion in world cricket with him not performing upto his usual standards at the international level. While his century-drought continues since late 2019, the 33-year-old had a rusty IPL 2022 -- ending with only 341 runs at a strike rate of 115.98 -- and has flopped so far in India's tour of England.

In the one-off Test against Ben Stokes & Co., in Edgbaston, Kohli returned with scores of 11 and 20 before he only managed 1 and 11 in the last two T20Is in the recently-concluded bilateral series. Rohit (76 not out) and fellow opener Shikhar Dhawan (31 not out) made light work of England`s 110, knocking off the victory target with 31.2 overs to spare.
Virat Kohli's form remains a cause of concern for Team India heading into the 2022 T20 World Cup. Kohli has so far had an dismal run in the ongoing England tour -- with scores of 11, 20, 1 and 11 in the one-off Test and last two T20Is respectively -- following an ordinary IPL 2022 edition.

Kohli's century-drought at the international level also continues, with him last reaching the triple-figure mark in late 2019 (during the pre-Covid era). Hence, things aren't at its best for the former Indian captain as calls for his omission has now started doing the rounds. Recently, former Indian skipper Kapil Dev opined that Kohli can also be dropped if he doesn't return to his best, however, ex-India pacer Ashish Nehra has backed the star batter.
