Former India captain Sunil Gavaskar has slammed the Indian players for opting for rest during national team duty and not considering taking a break while representing their respective franchises during the Indian Premier League (IPL). Gavaskar's comments have come at a time when the Indian team management and the selectors have been facing the ire for constantly resting senior players who are struggling with their form.

There have also been reports that some senior players asked to be rested from the upcoming five-match T20I series against West Indies. Captain Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli among others have already been rested for the ODI series against West Indies and it remains to be seen if they will feature in the T20 squad for the tour of the Caribbean.

The Indian legend said he is absolutely against players taking a rest from international cricket and questioned why don't the senior Indian players take a break during the IPL instead of resting when playing for the country.

You can't rest in IPL but want to rest when you play for India: Sunil Gavaskar slams Team India stars

Rohit Sharma-led India have squared off against England in the three-match ODI series opener at Kennington Oval, London on Tuesday (July 12). After winning the three T20Is, 2-1, Rohit & Co. won the toss and had no hesitancy in bowling first with conditions favourable for swing and seam on a green surface.

In quick time, England was 26 for 5 and got dismissed for a paltry 110 in 25.2 overs -- dismissed for their lowest ever score in ODIs against the Men in Blue. All the Indian pacers wreaked havoc but Jasprit Bumrah made the maximum noise with pace and movement to return with his best-ever bowling figures in the format, i.e. 6 for 19 (second five-fer overall). In addition, Bumrah scripted history by ending with the best-ever ODI bowling figures by an Indian in England.

ENG vs IND: Jasprit Bumrah wreaks havoc, achieves massive feat by an Indian bowler in 1st ODI

India and England were involved in a three-match T20I series, which ended on Sunday (July 10) in Edgbaston, Birmingham. With an unassailable 2-0 lead over Jos Buttler & Co., Rohit Sharma-led Men in Blue lost the third and final T20I by 17 runs, in a high-scoring encounter, and will now face the hosts in the series opener of the three ODIs.

While India will look to bring their newly-found T20I aggressive approach in the 50-over format, it will be interesting to see how England respond to the 50-over format's challenges sans Eoin Morgan. This will be the first time that the current world champions will enter the field in the shorter format without their sole World Cup-winning skipper and, hence, there will be eyes on England's new captain Jos Buttler. Needless to say, they will still resort to their gung-ho approach, which has already come into play even in the purest format of the game.

For India, there are fitness concerns regarding Virat Kohli, who is struggling to get back to his usual best. They will also miss the services of Bhuvneshwar Kumar, who was the Player-of-the-Series in the recently-concluded T20Is. India's bowling line-up will go through a chance, from the T20Is, whereas England's batting order will also be tweaked a bit. Thus, it makes for an interesting watch.

Match prediction for the 1st ODI in Kennington Oval, London: As far as the weather is concenred, it is expected to be a clear day. Thus, expect anything over, or near, 300-plus contest with some advantage to the batting first side.

IND vs ENG today match prediction: Who will win the first ODI between India and England?

India will be looking to continue their dominant run in white-ball cricket under captain Rohit Sharma when they lock horns with England in the 1st ODI of the three-match series at the Kennington Oval in London on Tuesday (July 12). After losing the one-off 5th Test in Edgbaston by 7 wickets, India bounced back to win the three-match T20I series 2-1 and will be hoping to get off to a winning start in ODIs.

Shikhar Dhawan will return to the playing XI as he remains a vital cog in the Indian batting line-up as far as ODIs are concerned. In the absence of KL Rahul, Dhawan will open the batting with skipper Rohit Sharma and will be hoping to get the Men in Blue off to a good start.

All eyes will be on struggling Virat Kohli, who has failed to fire in his last few outings for India and is under immense pressure to regain his lost form. Kohli might not feature in the playing XI on Tuesday amid reports that he suffered a groin injury during practice ahead of the first ODI.

However, if he manages to make the cut, Kohli will be aiming to shut down his critics and notch up a big knock against the hosts. He is likely to continue batting at number three amid backing from the captain and the team management. Surykaumar Yadav, Rishabh Pant and Hardik Pandya will constitute India's middle order.

While Pant was fabulous in the one-off Test against England, he couldn't quite continue his red-hot form in the T20Is against England. The swashbuckling left-hander will be hoping to find some consistency in the ODI series and contribute generously in the middle order.

Ravindra Jadeja is likely to be the second all-rounder in the side along with Pandya and will be donning the finishers' role in the lower-middle order. His contributions with the ball will be vital for the team in the absence of R Ashwin and Kuldeep Yadav.

Virat Kohli to miss out? Rohit Sharma-led India's predicted playing XI for 1st ODI against England

Indian cricket team captain Rohit Sharma responded to Virat Kohli's critics amid his ongoing lean patch for the Men in Blue. Kohli's struggles with the willow continued in the third and final T20I against England in Nottingham as he was once again sent packing cheaply on just 11 runs in India's 17-run defeat against the hosts. Rohit was asked about Kohli's concerning form post the team's loss against England on Sunday.

Kohli, who came out to bat at his usual number 3 spot in the 216-run chase, looked in fine touch as he slammed a four and a six off David Willey before getting caught on the next delivery. Kohli was caught by Jason Roy trying to get another boundary in the third over from Willey.

Kohli has been enduring a rough patch with the bat in international cricket for quite some time now and has not scored a century for India since Noveber 2019. His recent failures have also led to former cricketers and experts questioning his spot in India's T20I team ahead of the upcoming T20 World Cup 2022 in Australia later this year.

However, despite the pressure mounting on Kohli, Indian captain Rohit Sharma has backed the batting maestro and defended him from his critics. Speaking at the post-match presser after India's 2-1 series win against England, Rohit said form can go up and down but a player's quality remains. The Hitman asserted that the Indian team management is aware of Kohli's quality as a batter and will continue to back him.

Rohit Sharma defends Virat Kohli, responds to his critics: 'They don't know what's going on inside'

India`s star batter Virat Kohli is likely to miss out on the first ODI against England on Tuesday due to a suspected groin injury. After claiming victory in the three-match T20I series against England, Team India is all set to face them once again for a three-match ODI series. Virat did not come for optional practise on Monday ahead of the first ODI match at Kensington Oval, London. As per ANI`s sources in the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), he has a suspected groin injury and is unlikely to play the first ODI.

The source further stated that a medical test was conducted and it was found that the Virat has sustained mild strain. The former skipper could manage scores of only 11 and 20 in the fifth and final Test against Edgbaston and continued his bad performances in T20Is, where he could score only 12 runs in two innings. Also, Kohli had a sub-par IPL 2022, in which he could score only 341 runs in 16 games at an average of 22.73 and a sub-par strike rate of 115.98. He could score only two half-centuries in the tournament.

The Men in Blue will be going forward without the services of senior players like Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant in the ODI series against West Indies. Virat Kohli likely to miss ODI series opener vs England due to injury concerns: Sources

Virat Kohli's form remains a cause of concern and a huge talking point in the Indian cricket fraternity. With the 2022 T20 World Cup right around the corner, many former cricketers and experts have shared their views regarding King Kohli, who has struggled to be at his usual best since the start of IPL 2022 edition and his century-drought continues since late 2019.

Amid Virat Kohli's ongoing lean patch for Team India, questions have been raised on his spot in the T20I team with the T20 World Cup 2022 just a few months away. Kohli has failed to score runs consistently in international cricket for a while now and has struggled to notch up big scores. His last century for the Indian team came in November 2019 and the batting maestro has since failed to score a ton in international cricket.

After a dismal IPL 2022 campaign, Kohli was rested from South Africa series at home and made his comeback during India's tour of England. However, his poor patch with the willow continued as he fop in the one-off fifth Test before struggling in the two T20Is that he played against the hosts.

Kohli managed to score only 12 runs in two T20Is against England after being roped in into the playing XI in place of in-form Deepak Hooda. The move to drop Hooda was criticised by many with several experts questioning on what merit did Kohli deserve a place in the XI despite being out of form.

The former England captain reckons one out of Rishabh Pant or Dinesh Karthik will have to be dropped from the playing XI when Rahul returns.

Suryakumar Yadav gave a 360 degree masterclass en route to a special hundred but England pulled off a consolatory 17-run win over India in the third T20 International here on Sunday. Dawid Malan made a sublime 77 off 39 balls as England put India's second-string attack to sword to finish with a mammoth 215 for seven.

Suryakumar (117 off 55 balls) kept India in the hunt with his classy effort but lacked support from other batters while chasing the huge target. India's innings ended at 198 for nine in 20 overs. India sealed the three-match series 2-1, having won in Southampton and Birmingham.

India were on the backfoot at the start of the run chase, struggling to 31 for three in five overs. Openers Rohit Sharma (11) and Rishabh Pant (1) perished cheaply and it was another failure for Virat Kohli (11), who was caught at cover while trying to manufacture a third consecutive hit after collecting a four and a straight six off David Willey.

Suryakumar brought India back into the game with a 119-run stand with Shreyas Iyer (28 off 23) who was a spectator to his partner's brilliance for the major part of the partnership. As he often does, Suryakumar toyed with the opposition bowlers and picked his shots all around the ground.

The highlights of his glorious innings was the two lofted square drives off pacers Richard Gleeson and Chrish Jordan that went all the way for six. He became the fifth Indian to score a hundred in T20 Internationals by opening the face of the bat and guiding a low full toss off Willey between backward point and short third man.

His innings comprised 14 fours and half a dozen sixes. Suryakumar single-handedly brought the equation down to gettable 66 off 30 balls before running out of partners at the other end.

Earlier, skipper Jos Buttler (18 off 9 balls) and Jason Roy (27 off 26) helped England reach 52 for 1 in six overs. Malan and Liam Livingstone (42 not out off 29) then shared an entertaining 84-run partnership to set the platform for a massive total.

Having already sealed the series, India rested their frontline bowlers in Jasprit Bumrah, in-form Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Yuzvendra Chahal, besides star all-rounder Hardik Pandya. The Indian next-gen were taken to the cleaners by a power-packed England batting lineup which had disappointed in the first two games. Ravi Bishnoi's effort of two for 30 in four overs was the only silver lining in an otherwise ordinary bowling performance.

Buttler punished the inexperienced Umran Malik during his brief stay, collecting two fours and a six off the Indian's opening over that yielded 17 runs. Avesh Khan foxed Buttler with a slower ball that he played on to the stumps.
After Roy was caught behind off Malik, Malan changed gears and played proper cricketing shots that he is known for.

Also Read: Rahul Dravid, Rohit Sharma can't keep picking Virat Kohli for his past performances: Michael Vaughan His innings comprised 14 fours and half a dozen sixes. Suryakumar Yadav's century goes in vain as England beat India by 17 runs in 3rd T20I

Former India captain Kapil Dev had recently suggested Virat Kohli should be dropped from India's T20I team if he cannot bounce back from his ongoing lean patch in international cricket. 'Good call': Usman Khawaja takes a dig at Kapil Dev for questioning Virat Kohli's spot in India's T20I team

Virat Kohli's spot in India's T20I squad has been questioned by several former cricketers and experts of late amid his ongoing rough patch with the willow. Kohli has been far from consistent for India in international cricket over the last few years and has struggled to notch up big knocks for the team. His struggles continued as Kohli made his comeback in T20Is for India in the second T20I against England on Saturday (July 09).

Kohli returned to India's playing XI in a T20I match after the gap of four months but failed to make an impact as he was dismissed on just 1 run off 3 balls. While his lean patch is a huge concern for India heading into the T20 World Cup 2022, the rise of the likes of Deepak Hood and Suryakumar Yadav has further created uncertainty over his spot in the team.

Kohli was included in the playing XI for the 2nd T20I against England in place of in-form Deepak Hooda, who was enjoying a stellar run in the top-order. However, Kohli failed to justify his inclusion with another flop show at Edgbaston. Amid his rough patch, former England captain Michael Vaughan said Indian skipper Rohit Sharma and head coach Rahul Dravid are not considering dropping Kohli.

However, Vaughan insisted the captain-coach do cannot keep picking Kohli on the basis of his performances in the past. Vaughan also suggested Kohli take a break from all cricket and miss the upcoming five-match T20I series against West Indies post the England tour which he feels will do a lot of good for the former India captain.

“He (Virat) needs to score runs at a good strike rate. I am sure Rahul Dravid and Rohit Sharma are not considering dropping him. But you can’t just keep picking a player because of what he has done in the past," Vaughan said on Cricbuzz ahead of 3rd T20I.

Also Read: On this day in 2019: MS Dhoni's last match for India ends in a heart-breaking World Cup defeat However, Vaughan insisted the captain-coach do cannot keep picking Kohli on the basis of his performances in the past. “I have been saying he needs a break as it will do him a world of good. So missing the five T20Is against West Indies will be best thing to happen to him. But if there was ever a ground where you could get a quick score with great strike rate, Trent Bridge is the ground to get your form back," he added.
One of the most successful captains and wicket-keeper batters to have graced the game, MS Dhoni donned the Indian jersey for one final time on this day in 2019. The former India captain's last appearance for the Men in Blue came in the semi-final of the 2019 ODI World Cup against New Zealand at Old Trafford in Manchester where he scored a gritty half-century but failed to help India qualify for the final.

The semi-final between India and New Zealand was played over two days due to rain. While India restricted the Kiwis on 239/8 on Day 1, they were not as clinical with the bat during their run-chase on Day 2 and eventually fell short of the 240-run target. It was a woeful batting performance from India with Dhoni and Ravindra Jadeja saving them from a terrible collapse.

India lost their top 3 of Rohit Sharma, KL Rahul and Virat Kohli for a combined total of 3 runs before Dinesh Karthik was sent packing on 6 off 25 balls leaving the team reeling on 24/4 in the 240-run chase. Rishabh Pant and Hardik Pandya then combined to steady the ship but failed to build a good partnership.

Jadeja then joined forces with Dhoni in the middle to produce a sensational rescue act for India. The all-rounder notched up a cracking 77 off 59 balls to add 116 runs for the 7th wicket with Dhoni before being dismissed in the 48th over.

On this day in 2019: MS Dhoni's last match for India ends in a heart-breaking World Cup defeat

Virat Kohli's horrendous run with the bat continued in the second T20I against England on Sunday (July 10) as he was once again dismissed cheaply on just 1 off 3 balls. Kohli made his comeback in the T20I side after a gap of almost four months but failed to live up to the expectations once again as he was sent packing in no time after coming out to bat at number three.

Despite Kohli's flop show, India managed to thrash England by 49 runs in the 2nd T20I after successfully defending the total of 170 runs to clinch the three-match series 2-0 with two wins on the trot.
Former India cricketer Ajay Jadeja recently gave his take on the debate surrounding Kohli's spot in India's T20I team and said it's a call captain Rohit Sharma would have to make. Jadeja believes Rohit will have to decide if he wants to play the brand of cricket that India want with Kohli in the side or without him.

"You have been shown that there is another way of playing the same game. You are still scoring around 180 to 200. It's not that the game has changed, but you have a choice of how you want to play. I think Rohit Sharma will be making that call," Jadeja told Sony Sports.

"I think anyone who is leading the side has only two choices. That's the way I see it. Either you stick to the way you have been playing, give opportunities to youngsters or you go back to your old team that played before you started trying to give opportunities," he added.

Rohit Sharma became the second captain after Virat Kohli to win a T20I series in England as India thrashed the hosts by 49 runs in the second T20I at Edgbaston in Birmingham on Saturday. It was a clinical all-round performance from the Men in Blue, who successfully defended the target of 170 runs to register their second win in a row and take an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match series.

India made four changes in their playing XI from the series-opener as the likes of Virat Kohli, Jasprit Bumrah, Rishabh Pant and Ravindra Jadeja all returned to the side. The visitors continued with their new attacking approach with the bat after being asked to bat first at Edgbaston.

Rishabh Pant was promoted to open the batting and the move paid off well as he combined with skipper Rohit Sharma to give the team a flying start. The duo added 49 runs for the first wicket before India lost three wickets in quick succession as the two openers departed while Virat Kohli's lean patch continued.

All-rounder Ravindra Jadeja came to India's rescue and slammed a brilliant cameo of unbeaten 46 to guide them to a fighting total of 170 runs. In reply, England were skittled out for a paltry 121 in their run-chase as Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Jasprit Bumrah ran riot with the ball. While Bhuvneshwar finished with excellent figures of 3/15 in his 3 overs, Bumrah picked up 2 wickets while conceding only 10 runs off his 2 overs.

Deepak Hoods has been breathing down Kohli's neck amid calls that the former India skipper should be dropped to make way for youngsters in the playing XI in T20Is. However, Kohli is unlikely to be benched and will be hoping to respond to his critics with the willow in the final third T20I against England on Sunday (July 10). Kohli was dismissed on just 1 run off three balls in the 2nd T20I on Saturday and will be eager to bounce back in the final encounter.

Harry Brook (28) and Moeen Ali (36) tried to revive England in the middle overs, but both fell to the leg-spin of Yuzvendra Chahal (2-32) as the loss of regular wickets meant the home side were bowled out for 148 in 19.3 overs. The teams head to Edgbaston for the second match of the series on Saturday.

ENG vs IND: When and where to watch England vs India 1st T20I match - IST time and streaming details

After the fifth and final rescheduled Test between England and India ended in a dramatic fashion for the visitors, in Edgbaston, Birmingham, the action shifts to the white-ball series, comprising three T20Is and ODIs each.

Rohit Sharma-led India will square off with Jos Buttler's England in the opening T20I of the three-match series, in Southampton, on Thursday (July 07). While India are also without some of its regulars such as Virat Kohli, Jasprit Bumrah, Rishabh Pant, KL Rahul, Ravindra Jadeja, England will look upon this series as the commencement of a new era under Buttler after the conclusion of the glorious Eoin Morgan-era. England, however, remains a strong side and will aim to continue in a similar manner in their new phase.

For India, they are now well ahead of this year's T20 World Cup, to be held in Australia. However, the South Africa home series and a near loss to Ireland in the second and final T20I will raise some questions. Does the team comprise the T20 tactical wherewithal to counter big-hitting sides on flat surfaces, which is very likely to be the case in Australia? The England series can answer some questions in this regard. The regulars will also return from the second and penultimate tie as the Men in Blue can now start playing their regular XI more often than not.

Match prediction for England vs India, 1st T20I: The surface at the Rose Bowl, Southampton has not been very high-scoring in this year's T20 Blast, with the average first-innings total being 165. Moreover, five out of he seven games have been won by sides batting first. Expect a good contest but England will start ahead of India, who are without many key players for the series opener.

Happy Birthday MS Dhoni: Virat Kohli, Suresh Raina lead wishes as former Indian skipper turns 41

Former England captain Michael Vaughan has urged Virat Kohli to take a long sabbatical from cricket in order to rejuvenate himself and regain his lost form amid his ongoing rough patch. Kohli has struggled to score runs consistently across all formats over the last few months and has failed to spark a turnaround despite having been backed by many to bounce back. Vaughan believes a break can prove to be helpful for Kohli.

Kohli has been enduring a rough patch with the willow for quite some time now. He failed to get going for his franchise Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 before being rested from the T20I series against South Africa at home.

However, the rest didn't help much as Kohli's struggles continued in the recently-concluded Edgbaston Test between India and England. He returned with scores of 11 and 20 as England hammered India by seven wickets in the rescheduled encounter to level the series 2-2.

'He needs a sabbatical': Michael Vaughan urges Virat Kohli to take a 3-month break amid his struggles

England Test side has witnessed some major highs in the last few weeks. After whitewashing New Zealand 3-0 at home, Ben Stokes-led England beat India in the fifth and final rescheduled Test, in Edgabston, Birmingham, resorting to their newly-found bazball style of play; i.e. being more aggressive with the bat.

As a result, England have chased down three 275-plus totals versus New Zealand, on the trot, before beating India by chasing a mammoth 378-run target (being their most-successful Test run-chase). Thus, India's head coach Rahul Dravid shared his take on England's bazball approach after India missed a golden opportunity to win the five Tests 3-1 as the series ended in a 2-2 stalemate.

"People are talking a lot about Bazball. Some say this will change cricket entirely. As a coach what is your take on Bazball," a reporter asked Dravid during the press conference. To this, the former Indian captain-turned-coach politely responded with a smile and said, "Don't really know what's that."

Talking about the final Test, which was rescheduled after Covid cases in the Indian camp during the 2021 English summer, India were without regular captain Rohit Sharma (who had tested positive for the deadly infection). In Jasprit Bumrah's leadership, India rode on centuries from Rishabh Pant and Ravindra Jadeja to post 416 after being asked to bat first. In reply, England were dismissed for 284, giving a sizeable 132-run lead before India only managed 245 in their second essay. Despite still chasing a big target, of 378, England were 109-3 before centuries from Joe Root and Jonny Bairstow took them to a historic seven-wicket series-levelling win.
